When statements from any high-ranking public official goes out to the international community, i wonder if it was done off the cuff of some whim or on the back of heavy emotional sentiments.

Yes the inclusion is a grave matter for our Foreign policy (if we ever had one) but we forget that when jubilations went up in Kano and other states in the north over the 9/11 bombings, NAS did not think it wise to do some face-saving since this was the most devastatingly fatal attack on US soil. indeed no Nation would sit still after such an incident. instead, all was comfortably ignored and it was even aired on NTA for weeks. I feared that the FG was actually taunting the US over Osama Bin-Laden's success. Then  came the Sharia Crisis and the FG's apparent inability to be firm with Governors of Sharia states and how it was implemented. at that stage Sharia completely trounced the National Constitution,  you must think the US was not reviewing what was happening as a matter of Foreign Policy. What about MEND,  we all think we exist in a vacuum, no we do not!

What about the Religious Riots and the Boko Haram Issue,  all these incidents in countries serious about their International Relations would have issued diplomatic statements at least done something to allay fears of nations who have nationals here.

What we should be doing at this stage is saving face by quickly instituting initiatives that show that we do not condone terrorist acts (MEND included) or support religious extremists (it has nothing to do with sucking up to America and has a lot to do with our Internal Security as well as out International Relations) NAS missed it widely (Sadly)

Nigeria: National Assembly Gives USA Seven-Day Ultimatum on Terror List

Emmanuel Aziken, Tordue Salem, Inalegwu Shaibu and Chinyere Amalu

6 January 2010

THE diplomatic relations between Nigeria and the United States appear threatened over the foiled attempt by a Nigerian, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab to blow up a Northwest Airlines jet on Christmas Day, even as the Nigerian Senate yesterday gave the United States authorities a seven-day ultimatum to remove Nigerians from their watch list.

In another development, in Abuja, yesterday, the Foreign Affairs Minister, Chief Ojo Maduekwe, summoned the American Ambassador, Ms. Robin Sanders, to express the government's displeasure over the terror list.

Relatedly, the House of Representatives on its part, while condemning the US action, argued that the Central Intelligence Agency, CIA, Federal Bureau for Investigations, FBI and other security agencies in the United States were culpable in the incident just as the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Mr Mike Aondoakaa, said Nigeria will officially demand that the United States remove it from a terrorism flight watch list.

Senate Spokesman, Senator Ayogu Eze, at a briefing with Senate correspondents on behalf of Senate President David Mark, yesterday, said the Senate would on resumption next Tuesday take a definite position should the American authorities refuse to rescind its decision.

'Don't criminalise Nigerians'

Affirming that the alleged aborted terrorist attempt by Abdulmutallab was an exception that should not be generalised, Eze affirmed that there was yet no evidence to blame the security failure on the Nigerian authorities.

Said he: "I am speaking on behalf of the Senate and on behalf of the Senate President to state categorically that we are very unhappy about the development and when we resume we are going to take this matter up seriously if America has not taken Nigeria off that list.

"We also want to advise America that it is in their own best interest to conduct this matter very well in a manner that will not result into diplomatic row between America and Nigeria because the American president had himself clearly admitted that this was a failure of the system and manpower of Americans and I don't see where Nigeria comes in there.

"Moreover, this is just one instance of a Nigerian who it is clearly established has no link with any fundamentalist group or any interest group within Nigeria, not even with his parents. This was a boy whose disappearance was reported to security agencies, the American authorities, and all the relevant authorities and the American did nothing and for them to turn round to punish Nigerians for the sin of an isolated case like this is completely unacceptable to the Nigerian government and to the Nigerian Senate.

"We have also watched with keen interests several other breaches that have taken place since this boy's attempt. There was an uninvited guest who went to the White House-- he and his wife were found in the White House, that was not a Nigerian.

America should look inward and search their soul, there is something wrong with their system and they should not punish Nigerians who are very law-abiding and good international citizens for the failure and irresponsibility of American operatives. Nigeria will not take that.

US unfair to Nigeria'

"I think that it will be most unfair given the kind of relationship that has existed between America and Nigeria for America to jump to this kind of conclusion without even adequate consultations with the authorities in Nigeria. This is not acceptable to us and we are going to do whatever we can as a nation to prove to America that we will not take this.

"Our citizens who returned from different destinations, especially those who originated their flight from America went through hell in order to come to meet their kith and kin for the Christmas break and the harrowing experience has scared a lot of them who are even afraid to go back and some who are even afraid to originate their trips for genuine transaction in America arising from tales they got from their relations and friends, this must be stopped immediately. This is not how diplomacy is conducted."

According to him, "We are going to engage all our diplomatic gear to ensure that we either have relationship with America or we don't. We believe that America is a mature country, it is the model of democracy, all of us looked up to it and it has enjoyed very smooth and cordial diplomatic relationship with Nigeria. Nigeria has never been found wanting in her dealings with America.

"So, for them to embarrass this country with this kind of classification for no justification is completely unacceptable. It is not America alone that has citizens to whom the government is responsible, we also have citizens and we are responsible for them, we will not allow Nigerians to be molested wherever they go.

I think that this message should be put out clearly and when we resume, if the situation is still there, it is going to be one of the major issues that we are going to tackle and the Senate President has told me to state categorically that he is unhappy about this and being the chairman of the National Assembly, it means also on behalf of the National Assembly."

Reps flays US' action

Relatedly, spokesman for the House of Representatives, Mr. Eseme Eyiboh, described as unwarranted and unfair, the inclusion of Nigeria on the list of countries on the United States' terrorism hyper_alert countries.

"The earlier they de-list Nigeria on that list or rescind from the decision to put us on alert, the better for our diplomatic relations," he warned.

Eyiboh, however, said until the house resumed plenary next Tuesday, he would not issue an official statement on the issue.

The lawmaker who spoke to newsmen, yesterday, hours after a briefing by the Senate, added that CIA,FBI and other security agencies in the United States may also have been guilty of the terrorism act.

According to him, "CIA, FBI, security agencies in the United States are also culpable in the terrorism that they are talking about. It is possible that they have accomplices with the guys that trained that boy in Yemen .

"If not, why didn't they condemn Yemen? Why have they spared Yemen and are now condemning Nigeria?" He added that the matter was not strictly within the purview of the National Assembly to decide whether to cut diplomatic ties with the United States but an Executive function.

Aondoakaa attacks decision

The Attorney-General of the Federation and Justice Minister, Mr. Mike Aondoakaa, however, declared that the US "will rescind that decision because Nigeria is not a terrorist country and a single incident that involves a Nigerian cannot criminalise all Nigerians," while the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Ogbonna Onovo, insisted that there was "no security issue" in the country.

He cited a Briton, Richard Reid, the so_called "shoe bomber" convicted of trying to blow up a Paris_Miami flight in 2001.

According to the police boss, "If the American authorities could not add Britain ,  to the list of countries of interest, then there is no reason to include Nigeria. We may be deeply religious, but certainly we are no suicide bombers or terrorists."

The Minister of Information and Communications, Professor Dora Akunyili, had branded the move as discriminatory and unfair, saying the suspect, "was not influenced in Nigeria. He was not recruited or trained in Nigeria. He was not supported whatsoever in Nigeria."

But, the Action Congress, AC, argued that rather than sanctions, Nigeria needed the understanding and support of its international partners to stamp out religious extremism in the country.

According to the party, "a threat to peace anywhere is a threat to peace everywhere. Therefore, Nigeria's international partners will also be assisting themselves by assisting Nigeria," it said.

FG summons US envoy

Meanwhile, the Federal Government, yesterday, insisted that Nigeria does not deserve to be grouped among terrorist nations, saying it was unacceptable, even as it launched a process with the American Government towards de-listing the nation from that group.

The Foreign Affairs Minister, Chief Ojo Maduekwe, at a briefing in Abuja said top Nigerian officials held critical discussions with the American Ambassador Robin Sanders and other top envoys on how to achieve that goal.

Notwithstanding Nigeria's position, Maduekwe added that the government has ordered 30 full body scanners for the nation's airport, a demonstration of the government's non-compromising stance on terrorism,

The statement

According to him: "Listing Nigeria on second tire of countries that are indicated on the ladder of terrorism and security measures from the USA is an unacceptable New Year gift to a friendly country like Nigeria on the year of its golden jubilee celebration.

"We are not on the world terrorist list, nor have ever supported or connived with countries known for terrorist act. We have been on the list with which US has maintained excellent relationship. For the fact that these countries surround us does not place us in the terrorist list. It is unacceptable to Nigerians.

"I sensed some double standards here. What the young boy attempted to do is not different from what the suicide bomber-countries are doing and yet they are not on that list".

The minister, however, noted that during the meeting with the US Ambassador to Nigeria, he pleaded that Nigeria should be off the list, adding that Nigeria is not against American government protecting its citizens from being harmed.

"We want the American government to look into the matter again. We are not against them for trying to protect its citizens and we will give them all the support they needed to condemn global terrorism.

"We pledged as government under the leadership of Vice_President in the absence of Mr. President to cooperate with US in all their investigations and we are keeping to that. We have stopped at nothing but to show that we are united in combating terrorism", added Maduekwe.

He pointed out that even the state from which the young man came from is doing a soul searching on why he embarked on such mission, "it is embarrassing and unprofitable to Nigeria as a nation and undermines seriously our re-branding process."

Jesus came to officially negotiate a buy-back (repo) that is why he paid the ultimate sacrifice. but the maturity date is sadly unspecified and (in the far-future it seems). so the lease on this world is extended indefinitely in favor of Satan. As Landlord, he reserves the right to do as he damn well pleases, which is why over 50 million Christians in Nigeria are not making the difference that counts (Proverbs 14:34 Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people. or a better translation from the Duaoy Rheims Bible Justice exalteth a nation: but sin maketh nations miserable)

The reason we are on that list is not because anyone genuinely thinks we are as a bad some the nations that are on it. It is because every body knows that our nonchalant attitude will ensure that we will never address our problems until it is too late.
I have said it too often, we do not have a clear strategy on foreign policy (we never did) all our missions in other countries are just "settlement" jobs for politicians who lost out. whenever a Nigerian is involved in a situation that other nations will show deep concern, we simply just fluff over the matter and move on to when the next nations cup will be played. We never do anything until it is too late and when we do something, it is ill-planned and often hijacked as a tool for corruption. However it is potential bad news for drug pushers and trafikkers.
You got that right. Why have 3-D Full Body scanners when you cannot keep track of criminals within Nigeria. no statistics, no database and definitely a dearth of trained security personnel to handle such infrastructure. Same thing when i heard Lagos was getting CCTV, so far we have not seen any statistics, it has not deterred area boys from harassing commuters on a minute-basis.
I will support revolution when we have credible people on stand-by
You cannot have a revolution while waiting for credible people to be at ready, the popular government will simply kill them, bribe them or EFCC them to death.

Abiola had the right idea (sudden revolution) but he moved without gauging the interests and loyalty of his fan-base (Nigerians) . so when he made his move, he looked back and lo and behold, we where all in our living rooms watching the action from a safe distance  grin

A revolution takes careful study for a weak-point-in-time in the country's social, economic and political health. Nigeria as of this moment has several weaknesses that can be leveraged on to launch a massive revolution, but she also has some strengths that can easily thwart any attempts at a social revolution.

Points to leverage for a revolution in Nigeria
1: Economic Health (Poverty, Unemployment, Poor International trade advantages, weak agriculture, power)
2: Social Health (Corruption, religious and ethnic intolerance, MEND, poor state security, crime, education and health)
3: Political Health (election-rigging, party-infighting, poor leadership, NAS and Senate squabbles etc)

These three points of weakness are enough negativity to ride on to rouse masses into a revolution (with adequate weapons)

However there are also weaknesses (strengths to the reigning government) on the side of the Masses
1: Weak Unification of ideals (the down-trodden masses are split between political, religious and ethnic affiliations in spite  of their poverty-ridden condition)
2: Unified, Aggressive and Disciplined Military and security forces who have a knack for dismantling social groups with extreme prejudice.
3: Weak Religious structures: Religion is often seen as a weapon of mass education and can be used to whip up citizenry into social action that can unhinge any government.

We are far from any kind of revolution even if for a brief moment

exactly what i thought when i saw her response,  grin grin grin grin grin

on a serious note , osaze is not fashioned for that role,
That role is reserved for reserved and cool headed players like mikel,
not speedy players,
you need to hold the ball a little longer to make accurate calculations before releasing,
osaze is good but on the flanks,
I love Osaze's attitude going forward from the wings than center-forward; but I think Coach Amodu is not particularly strict on position play with the SE. I have often confused his role from a supporting striker, with a left wing-back. when he plays the SS role i see that he and our strikers (obafemi and nsofor) often crowd the 18-yrd box and scoring becomes a tricky business, but when he comes from the wings, his goals are a thrill to watch.

As a True-Playmaker the most important quality you should have is the ability to read the game, and get into good positions making for effective collection and distribution of the ball. Intuition is another key element of a playmakers' game, as they need to know where different players are at different times, without taking too long to dwell on the ball. A good playmaker will often hold possession, allowing other team members to make attacking runs.  Osaze is not that guy, he does not fit the role snugly like Jay-Jay did.

He has just a few qualities of a true Numero 10 which we do not have at present and Mikel Obi has a long way to go

It is an unfortunate trend but what is even more tragic is the fact that our so called Security agencies have grown slack since the military found their true place in a democratic setting. A police cannot tell the difference between bomb-making ingredients and baby milk. Our SSS are busy guarding key political figures to know the true status of our security situation.

You can go to a small pharmacy and obtain ingredients to make a powerful home-made bomb or even a secondary school or university laboratory with little effort. with google and some creativity, an arm-chair terrorist can take his game further.

It is sad, that our inefficiencies in governance have leaked our collective arses to other dangers

Our players are in trouble. This is what you get when you publicly disgrace yourself in the eyes
of the world like we did at the just concluded Nigeria 2009. Fewer clubs will be interested in buying our players now because they don't want old
men plying their trade for them disguising as 18, 19 and 20years old.

The unwise and untimely disgrace meted out by Adokie will go a long way to affect the career of footballers in Nigeria but the sad thing is that
its not only Nigeria that cheats yet it is only our players that will suffer the consequences more now. I believe in sanity for our football
but I prefer that we deal with our problem within ourselves instead of happily and foolishly disgracing ourselves in the glaring eyes of the
whole world.
I cannot argue with you there; the impact of adokiye's revelation has cut Nigerian players opportunities by a huge chunk, but it has always been an open secret in international circles that a lot of African players have credibility issues when it comes to their Age (especially at the youth level). I had the same problem trying to market a stellar mid-fielder who regularly benches Taye Taiwo back at Niger-docks (Now disbanded). He looked young but then i discovered he was also called to camp at Nigeria 99. When Fanny Amun saw him, he simply wondered out loud, "Are you still playing football!!?" my 19yr old happens to be 33 yrs as of December 15 2009. He can pull of an exciting performance in an amateur league but will not cut it in our Local League or Europe because his performance against much younger and technically adept players will tell negatively.

That is what happens to over-aged players when they try to match football old-age+experience with youth+experience,  they fail ignobly.

How often do you see a 15 our 16 yr old playing in 1st division football in awa hardened (tough) local league. but Kanu and Utaka and Yakubu all did  shocked so who is lying and why would this knowledge not impact on our chances at the 2010 World Cup.?

Prophecies are simply a matter of highly streamlined statistical analysis that will always remain a likely probability until it is proven true

You will have to look at the skill, form and performance of each SE player over the past 6 months and rate him
Then you will have to look at the team as a whole in the spectrum of each formation we traditionally adopt or have used over the past 6 competitions to come up with a credible frequency.

Then you will have to look at the performance of the coaching crew and the depth of their technique in building a cohesive team

Then you will summarize all the above into a singe rating, do the same for the other team and possibly consider fan-base and support, weather conditions and even the careers of each player (are they on loan, did the get a pay rise, are they looking to ship-out etc)

With that in hand, you can come up with a prophecy that will still turn on its head to make a false prophet out of you. Nigeria/Brazil and Nigeria/Argentina at the Olympics is a case in point
