I understand it's nice to hypothesize. But basic war strategy tells me they were doomed. As I pointed out, they were going to cross no less than 6 bridges to get to Lagos. You remember the Battle ofThermopylae? That's the whole idea. Besides many of these bridges could have simply been blown up. Mind you, the BLF numbers was no where near the numbers Nigeria had available to fight (from Ibadan, Abeokuta and Lagos).

There was a fierce battle. Banjo didn't just fold his cards. How many were Biafran soldiers in total? How many were heading for Lagos? They will pass Ijebu Ode, Shagamu etc before getting to Lagos and Dodan barracks was at the very other end of. Was there any back up plans from Enugu? Was there air support? These are questions reasonable and responsible people should ask. Advancement in war is not determined by how many kilometers you drive. That they passed Benin and got to Ore does not mean they were almost in Lagos.

Some people naively think because Ore to Lagos is about 4 hours drive, they were almost in Lagos. Literally, there were many bridges to cross; yet 180 men held them up at the bridge at Ore. Back in the day, most of the area between Ore and Lagos was marshland (still is) so you had to use the bridges. They could NEVER make it to Lagos without the "safe pass" Victor Banjo requested.

Lol @ mischievous. Decree 34 made anybody wielding the power in the center VERY powerful. Before January 66 and Ironsi, I don't think anybody thought it would be possible. Decree 34 was a good idea from the point of view of those wielding power; Ironsi opened the eyes of the North.

Southwest, North and East were regions which operated autonomously to an extent; and paid taxes to the Federal center. How different is that from confederation?
