Amb Fitsaint: Greetings to everyone.Since you're yet to start pre-clinicals and pre-med, the best you can do is prepare your mind. Well- the aim of writing usmle is to get into residency in the us. And as IMGs we are already disadvantaged. USMLE alone is not enough to earn a spot. A lot of factors will determine whether you'll get in. E.g the specialty you're applying to, your usmle scores, the strength of your letters of recommendations, your personal statement etc etc And about usmle- it's not enough to write this exam. As an IMG, it is a matter of priority that you ace this exam. Once you pass, there is no room for improvement. If you pass, you don pass. And your number of trials will bring down your chances of getting a spot. As a Nigerian medical undergraduate, I have been severely disadvantaged in taking this exam. USMLE needs exclusive preparation. Unfortunately, after my 100 level, we don't have any official holiday till graduation. The little I've had is a 3-week break after Part 2 MB Exam and the public holidays. The rest of the days are very indulging. So I can't write this exam because 1) if I ace usmle, I'll mess up at home. 2) I need to ace home stuff- that's where the stakes lie. I'm saying this to say that if your school's academic calendar is convenient, you can sneak in study for this exam and ace it. I won't advise that you prioritise usmle over home stuff. There will be ample time for usmle later...even after graduation. However, one thing which you must have before graduation (notice how I said "must" , is USCE( US Clinical Experience). I highly suggest that anyone that wants to do residency in the US must do his/her final year electives in the United States. This is the only chance you can get to have direct-contact with patients...and not mere observerships. Those folks prefer folks with USCE over those with observerships or worse still- those without. There are some hospitals that don't require USMLE before you do your electives. You can always know them.I wish you good luck in all your endeavours. |
Amb Fitsaint: Wow! How can I thank u? |
Amb Fitsaint: Wow! How can I thank u?As an IMG, 3 things would determine whether or not you'll be accepted into residency in the US. 1) USMLE scores 2) US Clinical Experience where you get LORs (Letters of reccomendation) 3) Personal statement. I also intend to pursue a US Residency and Fellowship after graduation. IMG= International Medical Graduate. We're sha derailing the thread. The medics thread would be a nice place to continue this discussion. |

STORM2: But wait oh....can anybody actually finish grays anatomy? And by "finish" i mean reading it from cover to cover. You mean Gray's Anatomy for Students? Or the Grandfather Gray? Well- anything is possible. The crux in Nigerian med school system is that there's too much information in too many standard texts. Your job as a smart student is to know information that you need, as you will be guided by your lecturers. I don't see the smartness in reading Big Gray's Anatomy "cover to cover". But like I said earlier- anything is possible. |

danox: How would I know that this has been treated in time past?I really think you don't have to respond to people particularly when you do not have something mature and meaningful to say.I'm sorry. Didn't mean it that way. Hope you've found your answers by now. |
And how is this post relevant to this section? Mods should move this topic to Family section. OP is just confused. |

It doesn't hurt to go a few pages back. |
Lagusta: And Yes, it's all about principles, but they still ultimately lead to a patient's well-being.... that's our goal, isn't it?? ??Yes, bruh. The patient is king!! |
Lagusta: because people would want to go for medicine for the money, not for the passion to save lives.....There's no money in Nigerian medical practice. The change is just enough to be comfortable. I also do not believe that because you are saving lives, then it's a license to suffer. All over the world, doctors are earning very well and are still saving lives conveniently. The Nigerian case is very saddening. That's why we will always have brain drain, and people will always leave to climes where it is understood that saving lives is not synchronous with suffering. Whether you did medicine for money, passion to save lives, or for fame, you will come to understand that the practice of medicine is all about principles. A doctor who's in for the money or fame but understands the principles of the practice is more relevant to the patient and will save more lives than one who is a just ''passionate to save lives'' but doesn't have a thorough drill of the profession. Doesn't matter what your intent is - just be sure you know what to do when the time is ripe. |
c5zar: to that lormax guy, u are such a child and a fraudster.I guess you want to be noticed. You did well- I noticed you. being a beneficiary of more dan one scholarship is wrong,Each award I received has terms and conditions. Till date I haven't breached any. The elephant and the tiger don't hunt in the same pasture. You know what you know. Doesn't mean it applies to me. and ur here claiming ur reach u are with the likes of yahoo boys.Bruh, the spelling is "rich". When will you get proper education? Not everyone needs scholarship to go to school and live comfortably. u say people are bragging with scores and but you are here talking abt 750 wat,That's not bragging. I don't brag. I understand how difficult it is for under-privileged people to perceive truth and not read unnecessary meanings into it. go and hide ursef. b4 u get caught.I don't trade words over the internet. Neither do I seek validation here. There's more to life than sitting behind a device to type endless razzmatazz. I'm older than that bruh!!! |
