Nowenuse: Mr, there is really nothin like an Edo language or a yoruba language. There r only edo nd yoruba dialects. Edo ppl speak languages dat r difrent nd similar 2each oda. Bini (edo south) and Etsakor (edo north) for instance can not understnd each oda. Evn among d etsakors, there r difrent etsakor dialects who cannot understnd each oda well. There r also Esan, owan, akoko-edo e.t.c. Edo ppl only profess a comon ancestry from d ancient bini kingdom, many of dem do nt evn agree to a comon ethnicity. Som bini ppl prefer 2b called Bini than Edo, same with som Ishan e.t.c. So with dat, I dnt think we shuld expect the yoruba ethnicity to be a homogenous ppl and language.
Surprsinly Egun ppl r today clasified as a yoruba sub-group 2geda with d aworis as Egun-awori, whereas it is very clear dat Egun ppl are of Dahomian (benin republic) origin.
So I really support Macof sayin dat Owo or Ekiti sub-groups of yoruba culd b closer to Bini inflences than yoruba (oyo) influences.

"Yoruba people" as it's known today don't have One language. Some Yoruba people speak languages From Edo as second or third languages just as some Edo speak Yoruba(Oyo) as second or third language.
Even Bini and Isan understand Owo language better than Oyo because the language is similar, yet Owo people call themselves Yoruba.
Owo has nothing do to with Oyo except common origin.
That's wat I've been saying and francis makes no sense out of.
Probably because he thinks am trying to claim Edo for Yoruba.

bigfrancis21: Hahaha. This is the most funny thing I've heard today. You're trying to discredit my experience of learning the yoruba history in CRK when I was in junior secondary? cheesy History is well written in many books about how Oduduwa, the so-called progenitor of the yoruba race, fell from the sky. Oduduwa climbed down an iron chain that had been hung
from the sky to the watery land below. He carried from the
sky above a snail-shell full of soil, a five-toed chicken,
and a chameleon. He emptied out the soil, and the dry land
was formed by the chicken kicking the soil around as he
searched for food. The chameleon tested the land to see if
it was firm. And then Orishanla (now sober) created
human beings, while Oduduwa formed the rest of the
living world.

You're trying to tell me you've never heard of this story before? Or your great grand father didn't tell you of this well-popular story? grin

http://bridgesandtangents./tag/yoruba/
True this is the story.
But this thread is culture and language if you want to learn Yoruba spirituality u visit the religion section and follow my post carefully.

The creation story isn't literal but symbolic representations

U act like Igbo doesn't have it's own symbolism in it's creation story.
Well am beginning to not take u seriously anymore

Joshthefirst: is it "being" now? Or is it still energy?

So the supreme God is a conscious being?
The word "being" is a complex term but Take it's definition to mean "anything that is and exist to be..."

On a more accurate use of words "Energy" is Wat Olodumare is.
The Cosmic singularity of All that is, The Ultimate form of Energy
The source of All forms of Energy

Of course, everything is conscious because the supreme being is conscious.

Pastor Olu T: U kept going back n forth, I have given u the floor a long time to tell us all how one can obtain spirituality by his consciousness. So we are listening to ur teachings, except u have got nothing to say?
I was very clear.

First I asked a question then u said No one can ever answer that question.

Then I ask u another question u drag me back refusing to answer it.

Then u speak from a book(not written by you). From the details obtained in the book you give me a way to understand God- A way which u follow but still don't understand God

Then I tell u that u only need ur consciousness to understand God ur own way and not the way of another man.

I made an example of One of the greatest teachers of all time- The Buddha. He understood God his own way but didn't impose it on his followers, He taught them to find who God truly is by themselves and not by wat people say.
He taught that God is everywhere in everything but we Must understand God by our selves using the Consciousness that is present in All

Ask a buddhist to describe God, he would tell u but ask a Christian he has nothing to say.

This is why I say religion is for the crazy

Wat do u know about Yoruba folklore? You see ur problem is dat u don't know a single thing about anything Yoruba but u act like u know.

That's why I see it's useless arguing wat u have no idea about.

No such stories of my ancestors falling from the sky, humans don't fall from the sky.
I never claim anybody fell from the sky, unless u mean Oduduwa.

Oduduwa here isn't a man but a creator force. The very dark energy which Carries subatomic molecules around the universe causing the formation of matter and ever expanding nature of the galaxy.

doubleDx: Smdh!!! I don't expect a carnal minded heathen like you to understand spiritual things any way...Satan has blinded you that nothing supernatural makes sense to you! And seeing as you've intentionally rejected God, you may live in delusion for the rest of your life....

2 Thessalonians 2:10-12 (KJV)

And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

However, I'm still praying for folks like you to come out of darkness seeing as Christ hasn't given up on you too!
Lol
Wats ur definition of carnal mind?
Wat.makes u think I rejected God? I reject ur Bible God doesn't mean I reject the true God.

I said before only those who have released themselves from Christianised mentality and hunger for knowledge can grow in consciousness to get enlightened.

You know why Buddha is second favorite spiritual teacher is because all he knew, he learnt himself. He never asked his priest to tell him you God is he knew his priest would tell him only wat he knew through other priest from older generations. Buddha wanted to know for himself and so set himself on a mission to No God and did that using the greatest gift of the universe- Consciousness. Buddha taught that All his followers should understand God in their own way and not believe wat they haven't resolved for themselves- using consciousness of course.

When u start trying to understanding God- the God ur Bible tells u, you can never be spiritual because that is not ur resolve. But wat anybody person is telling u.

Unless u believe growing in Consciousness is a waste of time and free will is evil

RoyPCain: @macof; i think the poverty that descended upon nigeria from mid 1980s onward till today is growing a wave of disrespectful peoples; yoruba youth included. why call me oponu osi when we are simply having a spiritual discussion and i may actually old enough to be your uncle, even to have you as a son? is this what yorubas the culture full of respect has turned to? where is the stellar cultural value of idobale lo to fun agba latodo omo kekere when i have not insulted you? you need to stop insulting people instead of intelligent discuss to show that you are omo luwabi and jade lati rere. present your point instead of being caustic. i am certain you didn't pick up this abrasive quality from Jesus and this may be the reason you didn't pick up his worship rituals or instructs to follow what the comforter after him [as to both] will command you from his Lord.

if you think Ibrahim [as] did not institute the hajj and it is his pattern we follow, why do we slaughter in commemoration of the event of the test to slaughter his son [as]? i am sure you and jews are angry because he is not from the bloodline of Israel. this is also the same anger that has made you enemy of Muhammad [sa]. but enemy of Muhammad is enemy of every prophet [as] before him.

Ibrahim [as] was not a jew or a christian, but a monotheist muslim bowing his will to God. Ibrahim invited his people to Islam, the belief and worship in obedience of 1 God, not God that has sons or born or turn to be human while He is Invisible, yet ghost. Ibrahim [as] told his children, his entire family to be of the same faith. when Jacob was dying Egypt he asked his children Who would they worship after he has gone? all of them told him they will worship the God of his father [Ibrahim, Ismaila and Isiaqa], One and they are muslims. this is the reason that they were not jews and their religion was not judaism at that time. yet they were monotheists. When God was going to totally destroy Pharaoh and humiliate the evil coptic egyptians, He instructed Moses [as] to tell all the children of Israel to go into their homes and remain there overnight and face a direction [Qiblah] and observe ritualistic worship prayer. The personal petition of Moses within this ritualistic worship prayer is indicated in surah Yunus [chapter 10], verse 88. in fact read from verses 71 to 92 which includes the reason the body of Pharaoh was thrown up by the sea and recovered for preservation.

Solomon preached and invited Bilquis, the Queen of Sheeba which included Ethiopia in her time to Islam. the whole effort of invitation by letter is in Surah Naml [chapter 27] verses 30 and 31. Sulayman [as] didn't start with in the name of the father, etc [trinity], but Bismillahir rRahmanir rRahiim.

Every prophet [as] before Jesus, and when it was the time of Jesus [as], he invited people to guidance not by father, son, holy ghost but One God, The Beneficent, The Merciful. I am Jesus the prophet of God. It is macof who made him God. this is your arrogant error. I call you to Islam as a man that may be old enough to have you as a son or nephew. do not die on disbelief. you are already warned by messengers of the last Messenger [SA].

I understand that you're trying to be loyal to your culture but come to think of it, which deep-thinking man who's self aware and knows who he truly is believes that his ancestor fell from the sky?
Yoruba history and origins are very profound in Oral history. No one can come and tell me poo that my father and uncles didn't tell

And who believes his ancestors fell from then skyhuh

bigfrancis21: Exactly, Igbo and Yoruba are not the same language or dialect but I'm free to classify yoruba as an Igbo sub group baa? Afterall, there are so many Igbo words common to Yoruba such as Nti/Eti, gbajie/baje, ozugo/otito, onu/enu. Yoruba is to Igbo what Ekpeye in Rivers state is to Igbo.
This is just plain silly

did I use language to incorporate any tribe. I showed u points that make ekiti a non-Yoruba dialect but a different language of it's own.
Because if that's the base Ewe language of Cote d'ivoire has Yoruba words- clean and exact Yoruba words
Not the charade u doing with Igbo/Yoruba

Those words u compared above aren't the same. And there's no binding cultural or historical ties between Oyo and Igbo. Who ever heard Oyo and Aba people standing in one place talkless of people called one peoplehuh

Edo on the other hand have a large population who speak Owo and Yoruba language as second or third languages.
And I didn't claim Edo to be Yoruba, because I know that's wat u can't get off ur mind.

I don't claim peoples land, In fact even if I did it would be for nothing. Edo is not Yoruba, just like Ijesha or any non-Oyo is not Yoruba

I see you don't know anything about tribal and ethnic peer ups

Pastor Olu T: U are right about one thing, u cant teach man God which is the mistake many make. U can only tell someone about God n they discover Him the, selves by having a personal relationship with Him it takes God to reveal God, and that no man can do.

We dont find God from ourselves, we dont start from ourselves, we start from Jesus Christ, any n every other thing aside from that will lead u astray n can even be disastrous.
This is why I say religious people can NEVER understand God

You claim Jesus is the only way other ways are doom because u read it in a book
So basically ur consciousness is shutdown and ur mentality- that is sense of reasoning is the Bible.

StarFlux: This whole thread is ridiculous. I see people claiming Edo to be a dialect of Yoruba and so on. Edo and Yoruba are two distinct languages, fairly different from each other.

Just because you find similar words here and there does not mean these languages are the same or dialects of each other, tell me: have you ever come by a language that does not borrow words? Core vocabulary is still distinct.
No one ever said. Edo is a Yoruba dialect.

My point is, Even about the people in general not language.
So many people called Yoruba today have nothing to do with Yoruba other than they speak Yoruba as a second or third language in their town

I gave examples- Owo and Ekiti are not Yoruba at all, they only speak Yoruba as a second language.

I used the logic that if edo is not in the same ethnic group as Owo, Ondo, Akure, Ilaje, Ekiti etc. then all of them can claim to be ethnic groups of their own especially the large ones like Ekiti, Ijesha, Ijebu

Joshthefirst: sorry for butting in, I wanna ask some question:
Is olorun the supreme God in the yoruba traditionalist system?
What are his(its) characteristics?
Olorun is a characteristic representation of Olodumare/Eledua.
Another one is Olofin

Olorun doesn't mean "God". Because all higher forces are Gods.

Olorun means "owner of the spiritual realm" he rules the sky and owns the Sun- which provides Energy needed for life on earth.

He is the supreme being and father of All.
Another aspect of Olodumare is Olofin meaning "owner of the law"

The law of the universe, all conscious activities are controlled by Olofin who provides limits and protects the Universe from disorder
