Jakumo:Terrible issue, and this post nearly finished me off laughing. It's true. That's their motivation. The 72 virgins are called Houris, and they wait patiently for the little psychos at the gates of paradise. There's something sinister here. The industrialised countries mostly outsource from India these days. Even American high school students engage Indian tutors to lecture, prepare and mark weekly assignments in subjects they're weak at. The timing is, I don't know, funny. Why can't these people coexist with anyone peacefully? I'm not sure there's any country on earth that's shared with muslims, that has a history of peace. Ignorant, asinine bastards. I still recall how Muslims in the North went a-killin over a cartoon in a newspaper on another continent. In another African country they dragged a woman into a square and killed her in front of her child and protesting relatives, that she commited adultery. When people tried to stop them, they shot into the crowd, wounding some people and killing a child. What is the matter with these people? Are they deranged or what? They're like a global epidemic now. |
Er, yes actually. That's true of virtually every action hero. Even the horrible Hancock. I don't see the bleeding resemblance. So Bourne fights hand to hand atimes. Now he owns the patent? No else can kill that way? |
The problem is, this deals with a man's fate after he is dead. There cannot be room for error, and the scales are really terrible:all of eternity. So a teaching like purgatory has to be very.very clear, and absolutely certain. The Bible might imply some things, but it doesn't imply important things like sin and salvation, the way to be saved, the fate of a man after death. It expressly teaches these things. It talks of heaven and hell. If there were a limbo place in between, it would plainly say so. That the bible implies some things doesn't mean it implies everything, or that it implies this one. Perhaps it exists, perhaps it doesn't. If it does, it has to be proven beyond a shadow of doubt. So far, it hasn't. It's easy to back Heaven and Hell with verses. Anyone can flip open a Bible and see it. Purgatory alone is implied and needs the Holy Spirit to be seen in the Bible. Come now. |
Horrific! What a monster!Kai! Poor woman. And her poor brother, coming to her aid. People ehn. |
Na real wah. ![]() Sweet mama, sorry honey. Take am easy o. Maybe the guy is acting like he thinks a newly-married man should act. Maybe he's copying his Daddy's conduct in the home when he was a child. He doesn't know he's hurting your feelings. Take the advice you've been given and talk to him. No vex jare. |
OMG I am so getting PAN'S. I seem to be really missing something, not having seen it. Gamine, who's Kirstie Allen? The Diving Bell is not for the faint of heart, because it's a true story. He's a gifted man who suffers a stroke, and is completely paralysed, except for one eye. And his mind's just fine,so it's like being trapped inside a nightmare. And the director unravels the story from within the man, so you see only when and what he sees, so that watching the movie is like being trapped in that body with him. It's terrible. |
Oh. I thought Quantum and its Bond was being compared to the Bourne movies. |
I haven't seen Pan's. I will now. Only foreign movie I've seen lately is The Diving Bell and the Butterfly. Thirty minutes and I was too full of horror and claustrophobia to continue. Great film, if you can take it. I couldn't. Karma, I don't get No Country For Old Men. Bardem is only 'technically' evil. He isn't, say, a charming but purely evil Lecter. He merely sees the world differently, and lives by a strange code of honour and a bizarre system of rules. I get why Brolin's wife had to die. He'd told Brolin he'd kill her. But he is unexpectedly disarmed by her, and does her the greatest kindness of which he's capable; he offers her a chance to escape her fate. But Brolin's wife doesn't know what he is,is infuriated that he'd turn the matter of her life and death into a game, and tragically refuses to take that chance. Only,it isn't a game to him; it's life. What I don't get is the manner of Brolin's death. Were the Coen Brothers too chicken to explore a final showdown between the two men, or was a showdown unnecessary?Or were they aiming for a The Departed effect? I get DiCaprio's end in that movie, it's pure genius. I don't get why Brolin had to die the way he did. And that guy is totally hot. ![]() What's Pan's Labyrinth about? |
'Iffy' is too kind to that horrible refrain. Just saw Bourne Ultimatum, great theme music, but I still don't get the comparisons between Bourne and Bond. |
Was Brolin nominated at all? Javiar deserved the Oscar. But I was rooting for Casey. JJ showed him a better actor than his brother, who only impressed me in Armageddon and Shakespeare in Love. Brad Pitt wasn't nominated for his brilliant performance in Fight Club, why would be nominated for JJ? Has the man ever been nominated for an Oscar at all? Edward Norton was stunning in the movie, furnishing a complex, excruciatingly multi-layered performance, and wasn't nominated for Best Actor. I've long stopped expecting the Oscars to make sense. And Lee is an amazing director. Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon is rich and beautiful on every level,as is Brokeback. That he was denied Best picture is painful, but he's still going to get it. iice! Skarsgard's son is delish. Better looking than the dad. All that molten blond hotness. Where do you find these men? |
@redsun It's all right to be angry at politicians. Oblivious, ignorant, vapid men, in the main. One should be angry. But it would be better if you weren't angry at all, but direct your passion towards processes and systems that would lift them up and place them aside, putting better men in their place. But one shouldn't confuse anger with simple decency and humanity. You don't know this man. You cannot produce a list of the evils he had done to deserve such a fate. All you know is that he's a politician. His death advances no cause and furnishes no gain. You self-righteously judge him, you cheapen what must be a horrendous and traumatic episode to his family, you celebrate his passing. Sure you're angry at politicians and the state of the country. Aren't we all? But your words and attitude towards someone who was murdered is very, very wrong, and very cheap. Do not allow unreasoning, unproductive anger to strip you of everything that makes a human being decent. |
vescucci:Yes, you are. ![]() Eliminate Bond? Just when they've finally found the real deal? ![]() |
Ja, you're the only one who doesn't like Juno. ![]() I thought it was sweet, and the dialogue really good. I liked No Country. I was teasing Vesc. Karma has a real thing for the movie,eh? My brother's in awe of the guy,but didn't think he should've gotten the Oscar. I don't know. I thought Casey should've won. And Anton's cat and mouse co-star shoul've been nominated. Will pick up the comedy later in the week. |
![]() I'd forgotten them! Oh my! I wonder what else I've forgotten. Shmoo! I remember Shmoo! |
Daniel is consistently fantastic. I haven't seen him in a movie where he wasn't outstanding. I tried watching There Will Be Blood, but the thing refused to engage me, so I left off. Will watch it again. Some people think solemn epicky movies should stop winning Best Pic, and that Juno shoulda won. I liked Juno but Best Picture?Nah. You think the Coen brothers deserved the tin man,in spite of the rat-chewed ending? iice not big on romance! Ah. I like old-fashioned romances, where they aren't groping themselves ten whole seconds after first laying eye on each other. What's How to Loose Friends and Alienate People about? |
Makes a great cocktail dress. Makes a great anything dress. It's my fav fashion colour. You can say a lot with it. But if black is not your thing, it's not do or die. Go with your 'ME' colours. |
The Merovingian bores me silly. The Architect makes no sense, and he makes it in the snootiest tones. Both of them can't get over themselves.Asses. ![]() You liked the characters in CLOSER? Wow. They're fantastically cruel and grasping, well, except Portman's character. I thought Jude Law and Julia Roberts deserved each other. Portman and Owen should've ended up together, but of course nothing is that simple. At least she gave him something Daniel never got; her real self. Just saw When Harry Met Sally, one of my TOP TWENTY. Had a great time. Seen anything good lately? Gamine, you've abandoned Clive Owen? Ah well. Celebrity marriages. ![]() Alan Shore is phenomenal, isn't he? What a character. Little wonder he kept snappping up those emmies. Fall away. He's worthy. ![]() |
vescucci:True. ![]() Literally, brown rice and wine I made myself, which isn't very good. Too much yeast, and it didn't sit long enough. Figuratively, a project which is bent on taking all my time. Filmically, When Harry Met Sally, one of my fav romances. What are you cooking baby? Hey! Who's your Bond? You never said. Likely Brosnan. iice I so didn't get what you meant about Vesper and Bond. Quantum confirmed that she did love him. Bond tells M she was right about Vesper. She was deceived in the Algerian, but all her actions stemmed from a desire to save both the men she loved,Bond especially, and her willingness to die for his sake. Bond lets the love-knot go at the end of the movie, throws it on the snow,to show he's forgiven her (as Matthus begged of him) for the life she denied them both when she died. Hence Quantum of Solace |
You probably liked the second cause of the extended action sequence from the Frenchman's house, when they went to get the Keymaker. Those Twin ghouls; could never get enuff of them. Cool threads too. Will Smith turned down the part of Neo. Thank gawd. Still haven't forgiven the guy the silly, underexplored, downright lazy Hancock. No Country. Vesc, you're crazy, you know? |
I hate anything houseworky. Except cookery. I'm a good cook. I'm contantly being asked to come up with the menu for events by friends, colleagues and family, and to do some part of the cooking. One soup I cannot be beaten at is egusi, and any kind of sauce and stock.I make ices and ice cream (not great at those, just okay) and great fruit wine. Just dabbling into French and Indian cookery. I haven't gotten the hang of it, but learning is fun. |
Portrait of a Lady- Henry James Philosophy- Jacquis Maritain Charlie and the Chocolate Factory- Roald Dahl |
So if you take a gun and blow somebody's head off, you can always blame it on the weather?Did the town you were born in pull the trigger? Did your environment type your post for you?Nay,nay, buster, you did. You're a free agent. You're the sum of all the choices you make in your life, good and bad,so why don't you want to be held accountable for them? |
@Lady But my favourite verse that clearly imples purgatory is this. I find your argument for the existence of purgatory, well, unconvincing. Perhaps it exists and perhaps it doesn't,but the verses you quote doesn't tell one it does exist. And why would the Bible want to imply anything? It mostly doesn't imply, it just says what a thing is. Sin, hell, homosexuality, adultery, murder, wrath, heaven, angel, war, and on and on and on.Lotsa delicious nouns and adjectives. If there is a purgatory, why aren't there verses that explicitly say so? If there are dozens of verses on Hell,an infinitely more terrible place than purgatory, why would the bible tiptoe around purgatory and not come right out and teach its existence? |
I liked The Matrix for a long, long time. If only the second and third parts weren't so, well, frigging pretentious! The dialogue is so silly and meaningles atimes, you can't belive your ears. And the new Oracle, with her old school, 'massa out and the chillun are in the cotton fields' acting. The Architect I wanted to delete. Belluci- boring! The Frenchman-boring!The twin ghouls-out of this world, wicked, supercool! They shoulda stopped at the first,no sequels.Along with Terminator 2, my favourite action flick. Some pretty cool action scenes in the sequels tho. Did you catch Portman in Closer? Of course you did. What did you think of the movie? |
You weren't really here to begin with,Vesc. |
Damn right I want his body. And I'll take it anyway I can get it too. ![]() Ohhhh. It's the suit you're hankering after, not the guy . Smashing suits, but then he is a Bond. ![]() Karma! How can ALL of them suck? That's not possible. You're just being a proper villain, is what. Who would have made a good Bond then? And how would his Bond be different from FIVE other Bonds? Craig, don't listen to Karma. You're a god among Bonds, darlin'. |
Jack? SEXY? Mission impossible. ![]() I SO did not see Legolas. Eomer. Hmmm. Much man. Hugo Weaving- Did you know the guy was born in Nigeria?- was getting typecast at a point. He bored me in V for Vendetta. I love Natalie Portman, and watched the movie for her. If you haven't seen her in Garden State, you should. Charming love story. But I get the voice thing, though if I had to pick the more mesmerising voice in that movie, it would be Fishburne's. And then Fishburne couldn't seem to get over his Matrix role and was rehashing it in every movie he appeared after that. Frigging annoying. ![]() |
Another one. Bet you Brosnan die hards cant give a single reason WHY he's a good Bond. |
Liked his smug, professorial air in GoodWill Hunting. Was he in King Arthur?OMG. I was in my Clive Owen phase and had eyes only for the guy. Bloom was rated the world's most successful actor at one time, because he'd done five movies and all of them had crossed the 300 million dollar mark. And all the girls were swooning over him in LOTR. Not my type. Heyyyy, you like Viggo,eh? Why? I liked the King, you know, the one the poetic wormtongue had in bondage until Gandalf came along. He's such a handsome man. Did you know Gandalf is gay? Ian Mckellen is so charismatic they spent months searching for an actor who wouldn't be overshadowed by him. That movie is simply one of the very greatest things that ever happened to film. Unbeatable. You wouldn't believe the BS Peter Jackson was making before then. No wonder studios wouldn't take him seriously at first. Vesc, Gere is a beauuuuutiful man. If there's an actor I would give that 'Know what you're thinking' thing to, it would be Jack Nicholson. He's one of the greatest actors ever, and one I can admire but am incapable of having a crush on. Ever. |
iice, you picked the perfect word. ![]() He's now so mouthwateringly remote and merciless I must have drooled the entire movie. The suits? Like he was born wearing them. My favourite scenes,he,er,wasn't wearing much. He was thinner than Casino, but oh,oh,oh. |
A quick Wrong About the Movie. This is what happens when you skip in and out of a movie and take in all of 20 minutes. Really sat down to Quantum and it was good. Music was even okay, except for the horrible refrain. In the same mould as Royale, though the latter is better. Worth watching. |
Spiked, A teenager that knows too much? Ohhhh my sides. Laughter can kill. Yup. Recently joined pipu in their thirties.Lots of teenage habits I know will follow me to the grave. Alternative rock. Swearing. I act like a teenager now?You need to see my brothers and I horseplaying. How could you think I was a teenager?I do visit other sections and it's pretty obvious I'm not one. Probably my movie star crushes, right?Another thing I'm taking to the grave. Vesc, I know you don't intend to,but everything you say makes me laugh. You act like turning 30 is a death sentence. Abandon all hope, ye who enter therein?I have friends in their sixties and friends in their teens. They're all pretty much the same. And I am about my career. Both my careers anyways. Women can eat their cake an have it,I've found, if they eat it with some cunning. So, yum. |
