All liars are in danger of hellfire o. And it is particularly serious if it is a lie against a Bond.No forgiveness for that one.Which kain pot belly. Well, perhaps in his last Bond movie, the one where spectre is the villain yet again, and he retires with the adorably innocent and unspoiled Bond girl.Never Say Never? I forget the title,but he was already graying, and might have had a wee belly. But that man aged very very very well. There was this creepy movie he did, where he was an elderly monk investigating a Monastery. His hair was all white and he was old in the movie,but I have never seen a better-looking older man.
TV/MoviesRe: Hollywood: Favourite Movies, Actors and Awards. Tinseltown reviews & Gossip by MadMax1(op): 3:00pm On Nov 06, 2008
@ Vesc,
I don't get how the role fit him perfectly and yet he's a poor actor. But I get that you're saying he got the Oscar without working too hard for it, that there are actors who consistently give Oscar-worthy performances and are denied, while he got his,like that. I think he was great as Ray. He managed to lose himself in the role, and it was really something to see.One can't take that away from him. But I agree it was too easy. Some magicians labour for years before they get the kind of industry recognition he got with just one great movie role. Sean Penn, Daniel Day Lewis, Denzel Washinton,etc. And many others are still waiting in the wings, churning out great performance after great performance: Don Cheadle, Morgan Freeman, Jonny Depp, Leo Di Caprio, Joaquin Phoenix,etc.

I'm not sure John Malkovitch has ever won an Oscar. It's an outright sin if he didn't get one for Dangerous Liaisons. I know Michelle Pffeifer was denied best supporting actress for that movie, and she should have gotten it, if only for the terrible desperation with which she gives up the fight and throws herself at Malkovitch's mercy. And as far as I'm concerned, denying Sean Penn for his electrifying performance in Dead Man Walking is the greatest Oscar travesty. I was only slighhly mollified when he finally won for Mystic River. And for a less riveting performance,mind you!

And look at this year's Best Actress winner!
If they decide based exclusively on the nominees's performance in ONE movie,why did they take one look at Norbit and deny Eddie Murphy what he so deserved? Everyone knows he would have won if not for that movie. And if you're looking at aggregate performance,the sum of all the nominee has done, why did Foxx win?
YEYE Oscars.

CultureRe: Outrageous Brideprice! by MadMax1(f): 12:55pm On Nov 05, 2008
Archaic custom. Barbaric to determine your worth as a human being by the bride price or dowry paid. Underlying it is the assumption that a girl child is the property of the man who'll marry her, and the parents are just taking care of her in the meantime. And when the man shows up he has to refund Taking Care of My Property expenses. And then we complain of gender discrimination.

In India the girl's family pays the dowry. Believe it or not, mothers were throwing babies away just a few years ago,if they were female,and keeping the males, because they would receive a dowry in case of the latter,when their son gets married. But they were too poor to afford a dowry if the baby's female. The dowry is their hope of striking it rich,if they're lucky.

Horrid custom that should be outlawed along with a horde of other obnoxious customs we practice, and most of them against females.They can put you through hell if your husband dies in most tribes,like making you go through fetish rituals or 'dashing' you to one of the husband's male relatives, because of this Property Exchange undercurrent behind paying for a bride. She's family property, so you have to go into debt to marry in the east and to please in laws in the west, and fathers in the North can pledge their daughters to suitors while they're a few days old.  It's a practice that demeans women. Educated women can get out of most of the unpleasantness of widowhood,but what about the majoriy of women that never saw the inside of a school who are put through inhuman experiences by the husband's family,and who accepts these things as their fate? All those rubbish customs that are damaging to women should be done away with, a beg.

Foreign AffairsRe: He Won!!! Barack Obama The 44th President Of America by MadMax1(f): 12:25pm On Nov 05, 2008
The guy has done everything to de-emphasise the colour of his skin, and focus people on his competence to lead. What the hell has his colour to do with how he runs office? But it's America so it cannot but be a racial issue. Whites voted for him, and it wasn't because he was black,it was because of his policies. I'm sure there are black people who disagreed with him on policy and didn't vote for him. But there are people who will measure his performance based on his colour,which is sad sad sad. It's wonderful that a black man got there. It will do a lot to ease race relations in the States,but as time goes by people should try and forget the colour of his skin, and support him as an individual and a leader.
FamilyRe: Do You Support Periodic Leave In Marriage? by MadMax1(f): 12:01pm On Nov 05, 2008
I think the poster meant taking periodic breaks from each other. I'm in a relationship that's almost a decade old and we don't live in each other pockets. There are times I don't want to see a soul and I mean NOBODY. He taking off sans me with his buddies for days or a couple of weeks doesn't mean we love each other any less. He often has a great time alone or with his buddies, and I don't feel obligated to share every single time he's laughing with him. We're a single unit,but we're individuals too, and you can't cater to one aspect of you two-in-oness, and smother the other to death.

I think the occasional break is good, and one shouldn't feel guilty about wanting it. It's certainly made my relationship stronger. We take vacations together, and I tell you those are some of our favourite times. But we infrequently take vacations without each other too.

I sometimes move my friends and sibling's kids to my home so the couple can relax alone or together. So yup, for me, the occasional break is good.

I went on a 28-day-fast eight years ago,the first and last time I tried such a thing. Because my body wasn't used to that kind of deprivation a lot of changes took place in my body,one of them being,my period went AWOL. Perhaps your friend's engaged in strenous activity her body isn't used to,or she's under a great deal of strain or stress. After I went off the fast from sheer panic my period came back. She should see a doc for an evaluation.
CultureRe: Evil Or Dirty Nigerian Cultures That Should Be Abolished by MadMax1(f): 11:41am On Nov 05, 2008
Husband dies and relatives compound the woman's anguish with all manner of fetish and inhuman tribal rituals, and then turn her out of hearth and home.

Division of labour in the home according to gender with kids,laying the foundation for the unending gender stereotyping and discrimination there is in the country. In my line of work I tend to have done a service in a virtual environment,so to speak,before a physical meet. How many times have I been assumed male,for no other reason except I'm good at what I do? Let's see- 100% of the time!

Child marriages in the North infuriates me. They stake their claim, sometimes only days after the baby is born,and hand her out in her adolescence,pretty much shackling her to a tired,monotous,uninspired destiny,denying her education in most cases.

Automatically Respect the Wealthy syndrome,in which we evaluate an individual's worth as a human being by the physical evidence of well-to-do-ness we can see.

Been together 9 years. Not married.

He spends decades in the bathroom while I grow old in the hallway, waxing an offkey album. At whoever's apartment,his or mine!He has this bathroom fetish and wont let anyone in there with him when he's waxing bathroomy religious.

He never loses his cool. And I mean,never.  Believe me, that is not as cool as it sounds.It's frigging ANNOYING,is what it is. When he's mad he's sort of still and silent (incidentally,he's terribly sexy when he's angry). It pisses me off that I can't keep my cool when I'm mad and he can.

He has never heard of the invention called a wine glass or cup,and swigs stuff straight from the can,bottle,jar or carton. OMG, so irritating!IRRITATING OOOOOOO!!!!!

He pretends he's an angel when we're with our families. He has this perfected and patented Peace Be Unto All Men smirk I swear I can kill him for.

I watch his sports to be supportive. But he likes me to watch the thing with him from beginning to end! No way am I sitting there for 90 minutes while grown men chase a leather ball about,rain or frigging shine. And it's when I do decide to sit there that they add some stupid 30-minute extra time again!

TV/MoviesRe: The Princess and The Frog: First Black Disney Princess by MadMax1(f): 4:25pm On Nov 04, 2008
Race is very much an issue in the colour hodgepodge of America, and Disney knows that. The fact that they're introducing a black princess and it's news is very revealing. If race wasn't an issue they would have had a long tradition of black characters and no one would be batting an eyelid now. But they'll be having a black presido soon, and why not ride the new pro-all-things-Obama-so-most-things-black-are-in wave?

They've promoted the cuddly,lovable,singing,beautiful WHITE princes and princesses so most Disney fans are used to that and conditioned to accept white characters as flag bearers of Fairy Tales. That's why there are people on the thread who think a black princess'll flop. They're no used to the idea. Let's hope Disney does its homework and makes the princess irresistible.

It's bold (and frigging manipulative) of them to go black. Let's hope it works out o.

Down boy. grin So you don't think Foxx should've won for Ray? Who were you rooting for that year?

@Spiked
Cusack's gorgeous. But I think he's sort of semi-retired now,hasn't he?

@Gamine
Clive has this air of danger about him,even without trying. Little wonder he was the British public's 1st choice for Bond. Glad the studio chose the coldly charismatic Craig,though. Wish you both many years of married bliss jare.

@iice
Do not get me started on my Oscar peeves. Fact is there are more whites in quality films, and sheer numbers quarantee they'll get more nominations than blacks. We can't deny the politics, but to award Oscars because people were screaming racism, so as not to alienate the coloured folks? And then to spitefully award it to someone everyone knows didn't deserve it, for shaking her booty and doing a lot of moaning?So you award an oscar to still the cries of racism,but make certain it's to an absurd choice so everyone knows it was a mere gesture? Disgusting. The fact that someone like Morgan Freeman did not get an Oscar for Driving Miss Daisy,and even more incredibly,for his stunning performance in The Shawshank Redemption,one of my Top Twenty,shows that there is racism and politics, but to mock those po', hardworking coloured uns with a Halle Berry win? E tire me.

And all the cheating! Did you catch Sean Penn in Dead Man Walking? His performance was a miracle. But who got Best Actor?NICOLAS FRIGGING CAGE, for Leaving Las Vegas. Kai! Sometimes I want to stop watching their bullshit awards,but then remember they occassionally give it to the deserving.  And everyone knew LOTR The Two Towers should have won Best Picture. They deny that amagnificent film the award, and then, their guilty consciences overcompensates with The Return of the King. Yeye pipu.

And poor Ang Lee. First it was Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon,another Top Twenty Lister, then Brokeback Mountain. He looks set to be another Scorcese.

Hmmm.Apart from his stunning looks,what do you admire about Cusack? Is he still acting? Saw him in Room something or the other, you know, the jinxed hotel room movie, but nothing since.

@Karma
Nice to see Kidman appreciated. She was terrific in Dogville,The Hours and Moulin Rouge.  Will be checking out 6 Feet Under. Don Cheadle is another gifted and really underused actor. Had no idea Malkovitch was still breathing movie-wise. Loved the guy since Dangerous Liaisons and watched Mary Reilly only for him. Will find that Changeling.

@Gamine
What do you love about Owen?

Someone mentioned Eddie Murphy. Reminded I was royally pissed he didn't get that Best Supporting Actor oscar. He was marvelous in Dreamgirls. Jennifer got  a supporting actress oscar I didn't think she deserved,given her competitors. Either of the two nominees from Babel should have won. Forrest Whitaker can win Best Actor for portraying Idin Amin in Last King of Scotland but not Don Cheadle for his superb portral of Paul Rusesabagina in Hotel Rwanda?They deny two electrifiying actors year after year- DiCaprio and Depp.Someone tell me again why Halle Berry won?  Wayo and politics too plenti. Poor Murphy,to be denied because of Norbit. Ki lo de!

Fav Indian song of all time is in The Promise, where Sunita runs to tell Vikram he's passed his exams and they go off in a cart and stop in this field of flowers. I adore that song. Amar,Akbar,Antony! Yayyyy!! The older brother was a bit of a hard ass,but I LOVE this movie. Akbar,who played Vikram in the Promise,actually married his girl in Amar.Akbar,Antony!
Ghazab completes the trilogy of favourite old Indian movies. That yeye actor chap that came with his wife to pretend they're the lost twin and mother is hysterical. And the scene where Vijay catches the poor guy,who hasn't consumated his marriage,chasing his wife almost finished me with laughter. That ojuyobo guy is the funniest and most useless indian comedian ever.

Saw Hairspray. Charming. Didn't know James Marsden could sing. Travolta was great as Mrs Turnblad. The role was written for a man in drag,not a woman. Man, I had a great time.

I'm still yawning through the second episode of the first season of Oz. Liked the punk prison poetry at the beginning of the first episode but the series's boring the hell out of me. I saw it because someone on Nairaland is a real Oz promoter. Geez, I wonder who that could be? And because I saw Eddie Falco from The Sopranos and Agabaje and Harold from Lost were in it.Perhaps it'll get better. Will slug through to the fourth episode. If it hasn't engaged me by then I'm abandoning ship.
