Hmmm
A catfight.
Can I watch?
Gamine, you know there's a Gaminechic now? Y'all met? Soon there'll be a Spikedcylinderchic and a Karmamodchic and an iicechic and a Vescuccichic.
I saw Pretty Woman months ago with my brother. We had a great time. The movie's aged well. First time I'll hear Gere can't act. What I heard was it was pretty heard to take him seriously as an actor at the beginning cause of his looks. I like the guy.

Whatever happened to Liam Neeson? He was great in Schindler's List and Batman Begins. He has great presence and star quality. Now I don't see him anymore sad. And Orlando Bloom? Is he over, like that? sad

See it and let's know what you think.
Brace yourself,Jedi Bond, Bond did not shag Olga. First time in Bond history the Bond girl and Bond did not hit the sack. I like that about the movie. But it's not in the same league as Casino. You'll like it. You're a guy. tongue

Gamine,where have you been?
Boston Legal is incredible. Fav after LOST. Damn hilarious. Only other show almost as witty is House.

Vesc, OMG! Your dad just turned fifty? I'm chortling, I can't help it. No wonder early thirties seem like tottering old age to you. 'Young at heart.' grin . Ah well. I have younger brothers, all of them utterly weird. You'll fit right in. grin

FamilyRe: Her Husband Wants Her Back Home! by MadMax1(f): 12:19pm On Nov 17, 2008
Separation such as yours confers a dangerous freedom: the safety of marriage and the perks of being single. Are you romantically involved with someone at your end, and does your husband suspect that's the case? I'll take it your husband isn't a slowpoke, because only a painfully insecure, incomprehensibly unreasonable man would cut off the sole means of support to a lot of people, himself and a child included. A jealous, threatened husband,on the other hand, is capable of danming the consequences, merely to have you where he may keep an eye on you. I doubt he sprung an ultimatum on you out of the blue. You've probably been at this 'come back home' issue a while.

5 years is a long time. You've made a life for yourself and your child, and naturally don't want to give that up. And why should you? But if you've given your husband cause to suspect infidelity, end the illicit relationship and commit yourself to your marriage. If you're not cheating, then perhaps you've developed an attitude, being the breadwinner, and left him out of things, and he's been feeling helpless and ashamed for years, and this is his mule-headed way of taking charge, of wresting control from you. For all their macho posturing, men are sensitive, emotional creatures. If that's the case, immediately start involving him fully in your life and the life of your child, seeking his advice and opinion, involving him in decision-making,exactly as if he were there with you. You seem to have this really old-school kind of relationship. You may even make up something outrageous you intend to do, which you have no intention of following up on,just to give him the satisfaction of putting his foot down while you meekly agree.

The child is the important person here. He should be where the best opportunities are. People leave their jobs AFTER they're issued travel papers, not BEFORE,so I don't understand how your husband can be unemployed and remain so, for five years. It's not typical of our men. Perhaps you're not telling the whole story here. He should get a job.Or you may assist him in starting a small business of his own,if you can. Eventually,he may join you both.

Distance strains relationships, but people cope as best as they can. Good luck.

Finally saw Quantum.
I have to say, right away, that it is NOT in the same league as Casino Royale. Horrible music, and after Vesper's cool, enigmatic complexity,Olga is bland and unimpressive. Love the tan, though.

I'm puzzled as to why, after coming up with Casino Royale, which was cozy, intimate and murderously involving, they had to abandon something that works for more of the same kind of action they've been churning out for decades. Craig is now a killing machine, full of cold fury and ruthlesslessness, and he and Judi Dench are just about the only actors worth watching in the flick.

Hated M's new gadgety office. This movie couldn't have had the same director as the previous. The music ticked me off the most. After the incomparably cool You Know My Name for Casino Royale, they come up with this? I guess the Director was aiming for the console and gadget-mad teenage demographic, cos I don't know who else this movie could have been made for. Certainly not die-hard Casino fans.

Craig was great. Cruel and sexy as hell. Yum.
They'd better revert to Casino Royale formula in the next instalment,or else.

There are charlatans, but the real deals are there too.

But some of the fakes are so obvious you have to wonder how on earth they managed to get converts. People left their homes and went to Rev King's church. People attended Malaika's church. I saw her on TV and she was bloody ridiculous.

But genuine servants of God,there are. And I don't mean strutting peacocks who expect people older than their parents to call them 'Daddy' and 'Sir', and are swollen-headed with 'annointing'. I mean genuine Christians on a mission for God. Dem dey o.

Vesc,
They certainly are. Though Ian Fleming came up with Pussy Galore, for Bond girl moniker. They say she's in Goldfinger,at which I'm taking another look. I wont believe it until I hear it myself. Hilarious.

@lucabrasi

This is the first I've heard of witch babies, and it's horrible. What is the state government doing about it? Are they letting that sort of thing continue, with Bishops putting stuff into children's eyes, for crying out loud?
How can one locate the place? I've been thinking of adopting for some time, and this may finally jolt me out of my complacency.

A nun has the secret to eternal youth and beauty: much good it'll do the rest of us. She's dead. And it still worked, cause she's perfectly preserved. This has to be one of the few threads I've read in its entirety. The puppies distracted me, so adorable, but then I moved on. My mind boggled. Any more mysteries? These cant be all there is. It would be lovely if the thread could be a one-stop source to all things impossible. The ones I've seen so far gave me plenty to chew on. But there has to be more.

What enchanted me this year is the discovery that, from outer space, the planet we inhabit gives off strange noises, indiscernible to the human ear. The closest thing scientists could compare it to are musical notes.

Why do you want to help her; do you intend to marry her? The girl sef. She is a 'born again' X who has sex when she's knocked over a few. undecided Are you sure she's born again,or she merely used religion to hide behind, not wanting you to discover the truth about her? I'm sorry, but she doesn't sound honest. She might not want to disclose the truth until she knows and trusts you,but c'mon; a year and a half is more than long enough. And she should have said something when you got engaged. I don't trust the girl jor.

HealthRe: Doctors Say Marrow Transplant May Have Cured Aids by MadMax1(f): 12:49pm On Nov 14, 2008
So what came of the conference Abalaka held in Canana,is it?It was held 2 years ago.Perhaps he did find a cure, but he shouldn't have sought validation from his government,if none was to be had. Texazzpete is correct. You discover the cure for AIDS, you have the world at your feet and no government can stop you or 'kill your dreams'.Perhaps the man is a patriot and wanted Nigeria to get recognition for his find. But he's an educated man,not an illiterate herbalist. A scientist knows the way to peer-reviewed journals and Foundations willing to sponsor further research, and the credit would still go to him and to the country he's from, irrespective of where the support comes from.

You discover the cure for AIDS,you'd nearly go insane from the fire of your find. It's like a cure for cancer. Lack of government support would not put that fire out.

He should prove once and for all he has the cure for the danged thing,or shut the hell up already.
Christianity EtcRe: How Did Black People Become Black? by MadMax1(f): 11:59am On Nov 14, 2008
What other functions does melanin have? I though it was a dermatological response only, since dark skin produces the stuff when the sun touches it. And you sort of cant discuss black skin without mentioning it,since skin colour is merely the degree of melanin in your skin.

Light-skinned black people get darker after exposure to the sun, but it's temporary; they revert back to their colour once out of the sun for long enough. But with continued exposure they darken permanently, depending on the degree of exposure. If he was born in the tropics he wouldn't have the same complexion he had as a child; he would be darker. And even caucasians get darker in the sun; they turn brown, they get a tan. Everyone gets dark in the sun and lighter out of the sun.

Since scientists have established the negroids are the oldest race on earth, the question becomes:How did other skin colours come about? Climate.

What are the holes in the 'Out of Africa' theory?
TV/MoviesRe: Best Movie Villain/"bad Guy" by MadMax1(f): 11:05am On Nov 14, 2008
Kev-d I'm liking your list. Has most of my villains minus 6,8,and 12.  Commodus wasn't a villain. I was actually rooting for him.The real villain in that movie was his slowpoke of a father.Jack Nicholson in The Shining is as scary as it gets. I can't decide who's scarier between he and Lecter.

My favourite villain is,now and forevermore, The Count in Moulin Rouge. Tickled me to bits.

Worst villain, sorry Heroes lovers, SYLAR! Intriguing when he was faceless but falls apart when he is revealed. No presence, isn't scary and is the only villain so far who has succeeded in making me yawn. Only endured Season 1 because of two lovelies:Hiro and his best friend.

As far as evil goes you might add the girl in The Exorcist, the boy in The Omen,Norman Bates in Psycho, Jason in Friday the 13th.

Christianity EtcRe: How Did Black People Become Black? by MadMax1(f): 2:45pm On Nov 13, 2008
tpia:
my own viewpoint on this matter (based on various articles I've read here and there):

As per the Shem Ham and Japheth hypothesis, science says all humans can trace their DNA to a single female being from antiquity. So that's all that. I think I read it in a journal somewhere, or else saw it on some news site.

just my opinion and I stand to be corrected if evidence is uncovered that proves otherwise.
Absolutely true. I watched that on a science special over a decade ago. I'm not sure anyone's proven otherwise.

Genesis is Jewish oral tradition. Like most tribes they had their stories of where they came from, oral tradition handed down for thousands of years. Perhaps the details got fudged, but Moses recorded a history of the Jews as oral tradition had it in his day. There's truth in Genesis; the problem is distinguishing which is fact and which are embellishments.

As for colour, I can only guess. There were extremes of weather in antiquity, like now, and melanin might have developed to shield the skin from the sun. And those who'd migrated to cold, sunless places might have developed pale skin. Travel wasn't easy, and the earth's geography differered considerably from what obtains today. So perhaps colour evolved as a response to the particular climate groups found themselves in.

But what about the other colours?Men are black, white, brown and yellow.

Apart from colour, physical characteristics distinguish human races. Those cannot have evolved from climate.
PoliticsRe: Naval Officers Beat Up A Lady And Stripped Her - Watch Video by MadMax1(f): 2:09pm On Nov 13, 2008
But it's strange that the father had innocent people beaten and it came full circle and the daughter was savagely beaten too, though she was innocent as well. The irony.

It doesn't matter whose daughter she is in a way, since she's actively pursuing justice. Those people and other animals like them must be brought to book.

On the other hand though,I wish she hadn't been a big man's daughter, but an average Nigerian pushing for her rights. Then she would be a symbol for everybody whose rights had ever been trampled by uniformed animals. But given whose daughter she is, she is a symbol to other indignant big men's pickins, who are as arrogant and untouchable as their fathers. So when she triumphs these insane military men might learn to not offend big people, but assume the average Nigerian on the street is still fair game.

But a half respect is better than none, and stopping this sort of thing once and for all must begin from somewhere.
