Ebonyi Community threatens ‘war’ over purported sell of military boat A serious crisis is brewing in a sleepy-riverine Ozizza community in Afikpo North Local Government Area of Ebonyi State which shares boarders with Cross River State over reports that a pontoon boat which was inherited by the people from the military government of the defunct Imo State has been allegedly sold to an ‘undisclosed person’. The alleged sale which has triggered anxiety among youths and elders of the community including a State Assembly lawmaker from the area had been made public following an announcement over the weekend on the State-owned Ebonyi Broadcasting Service through the office of the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Kenneth Ugbala to the effect that the ‘State government has allegedly sold the said property. About 45 feet in size, the boat which was handed over the people by the military administration of Amadi Ikweche under the old Imo State 1986 to help solve the transportation needs of the people of the area to ferry them across the Ozizza beach to their close neighbours in Igonigoni, Cross River State features a triangular-shaped hull with a wide beam which enabled it to accommodate more passengers. Members of the community known and celebrated for their fishing prowess told news men that the said radio announcement purporting the sale of the boat came as a rude shock to them as they were neither informed nor consulted by anyone before the purported action was taken. One of the villagers, Mr. Ikwor Egwu, a middle-aged man and a native of Orrah which comprises a group of about nine villages narrated that they were stunned by the presence of some strange persons in the community who were at the river bank with a claim that they had purchased and came to assess the pontoon boat. “we had to summon an emergency meeting after asking them to leave our community immediately to avoid being confronted by angry youths before using the traditional ‘omu’ (palm frond) to tie round the boat because this is the only inheritance our fathers in our long journey from Imo to Abia before being carved into the present-day Ebonyi State. Why would the government not think of either repairing it, procuring a new boat or at least informing us through a meeting, delegation or any form of deliberation whatsoever before coming up with the claim that it has sold our pontoon (boat) just by a mere radio announcement? Who is the said buyer by the way and why was our community not consulted?, he queried. Mr. Ikwor added: “We feel something is fishy about the whole drama and this is unacceptable just as it is condemnable and we have met at Ogo Orrah (the community’s playground) with a strong resolve to send a letter informing the government of the dangers of such illegal action without following a due process, that it is if the government is even officially aware of the purported sale”. Another villager, Mr. Ogbonnia Chukwu who also spoke on the matter said the youths of the community will never allow the action go unchallenged unless the government or anybody expressing interest in buying the property does the right thing. “If they think that there are no men capable of challenging them in this our (Ozizza) community they have to think again because we have a lot of well-to-do men who can square up with anybody especially when we feel our community has been ignored or relegated to the background. We will not allow that no matter who is behind it”, he insisted. Also speaking, a lawmaker in the Ebonyi State House of Assembly, Hon. Kingsley Ikoro representing Afikpo North East State constituency for the third time who was also at the meeting told the Press that he was surprised to also hear the announcement purporting the sale of the pontoon boat on air just like the rest of the villagers. In his words, “It was after I heard the radio announcement to confirm it by myself that I launched investigations into the matter only to discover that it was even a colleague of mine in the House who is behind the purported sale obviously in connivance with some people in government. And our people are saying that even though the government has the right to decide on what to do with it but at least, courtesy demands that they should be informed and carried along in the entire process because it is the community that the pontoon had served their transportation needs and it is still there because they keep a watch over it.” Hon. Ikoro who quickly waded in to calm the angry youths and elders of his community down reiterated that ordinarily, his people have been facing even greater challenges at the moment exporting their food crops and particularly fishes to neighbouring Cross River State for sales. “Our people even expected the government to come to their aid instead of the reverse being the case. We don’t have basic amenities in this community- not electricity, not good roads, not portable and drinkable water, not even a large market for traders to use and I have been doing my best to see how these good things of life could get to our people Now, for somebody to just wake up from any side of the bed and think he or she can intrude into this place and transact such business without the knowledge of people of our community is a downright no and I stand with their resolve in this meeting that it will not be allowed. People have to be made to do things right and to do what is right at any point in time and that is what the democracy we are practising is all about- right to air hearing, justice and equity”, he concluded. He however warned that knowing the background of his people, the said buyers should better seek for ways of approaching the community to reach a truce and broker peace with them or they might face resistance having been cautioned to steer clear till things are done right by the people, stating further that the community has his support to take all valid legal and lawful steps including writing officially to the State’s Chief Executive, Engr. David Umahi whom he described as a peace-loving father to bare their views on the matter. “Our people know and trust the Governor as a man of honesty and a peace-lover. That is why they have always supported him and my party- the PDP. And I am very optimistic that His Excellency, the Governor Umahi I know will not betray that trust. That is why we have to first and foremost officially inform him in writing and also possibly send a delegation to meet with him on this matter. I have assured my people that I stand by them and they trust I will forever do until the right is done”, he concluded. "Emejulu’s Claim On Airport Land Is Fraud" - Eneh’s family | IGBERE TV • Claims ownership with 1958 title deed The family of the late G.O.D. Eneh of Udi in Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State, yesterday, described Jonathan Emejulu’s claim of ownership of a portion of the Akanu Ibiam International airport land, as a fraud. IGBERE TV reports that the members of the family have asked the state government to investigate the authenticity of court judgment and order being paraded by Emejulu, as the land in question belongs to the Eneh family. IGBERE TV recalls that Emejulu had last Tuesday, demolished some structures at the Airport Road Layout Phases IV and V, including about two kilometre perimeter fence of the international airport under construction, while executing a court judgment and order that allegedly gave him ownership. But, yesterday at a press briefing in Enugu, two sons of the late George Eneh and Garry Eneh with their family lawyer, Ifeanyi Udenze, showed evidence of ownership with a November 4, 1958 title deed and government gazette. The Enehs, who have already written Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi on the issue said: “Our attention has been drawn to the so-called execution of the judgment in Suit No. E/165m/2010 by one Emejulu purporting to own a portion of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu designated free trade zone. “Please be informed that Emejulu is not the only person in court in respect of the free trade zone. The estate of Eneh is before the Enugu State High Court in Suit No. E/90/2019 on the same subject matter (free trade zone). “Emejulu’s claim over the land is being challenged vigorously and variously. Emujulu’s claim is a fraud and ought to be investigated. “Emejulu’s High Court judgment is fraught with lies and bad faith and will be set aside. Emejulu who is a litigant in an ongoing Suit No. E/642/2016 adjourned, after the last hearing date in Court 6, Enugu High Court, to September 21, 2020 on a subject matter similar in every material particular surreptitiously approached another court in Enugu State for a motion ex parte to invade or ‘execute’ judgment in the location of interest. “The flaw and huge error in that judgment/execution is that Emejulu concealed from the judge and executing authority that, has now been clearly proven by the Ministry of Lands and Survey of Enugu State that his purported Airport Road Layout Phases IV and V, have no locational relationship to the area of the present renovation of Akanu Ibiam International Airport. Hence the criminality of his intent and actions are self-evident.” The Eneh family disclosed that their late father bought the said land from the late Nike monarch, Igwe Nnaji and had all documentations properly made. They said they had earlier written the Aviation Minister and the Presidency seeking compensation for the extension of the runway and were hopeful that their petitions were receiving attention. According to them, the proper approach to the present issue would be for government of Enugu State to investigate all claims through the attorney general. STAY WITH IGBERE TV. LASG MONITORING TEAM DISLODGES ILLEGAL OCCUPANTS AT LEKKI FORESHORE The Monitoring Team of the Lagos State Government has dislodged some illegal miners and occupiers of the proposed development site of Lekki Foreshore Scheme in a bid to stop indiscriminate evacuation and carting away of sand meant for construction purposes. The Permanent Secretary, Lands Bureau, Mr. Bode Agoro, who led the Monitoring Team on the exercise, decried the wanton disregard and encroachment of miners and illegal occupiers of the site, assuring that the government will not fold its hands and watch squatters deface the scheme. He reiterated that the government is determined to take drastic action against such illegal occupancy of its schemes across the metropolis. The Acting General Manager New Towns Development Authority (NTDA), Tpl. Olakunle Aboyeji, who was also present during the exercise, expressed disbelief at the theft of the commonwealth of Lagosians by a greedy few who also attempt to discredit the government. He lamented that the sand which the miners were carting away was designated for the development of the Lekki Foreshore Scheme to create access for allottees who intend to take possession of their land. Aboyeji stated that the activities of the illegal squatters and miscreants, who perpetrate unlawful acts within and around the scheme, also constitute a security threat to others in the area, warning that anybody caught contravening the rules in the vicinity will face the full wrath of the law. He explained that the monitoring exercise will be continuous in order to ensure the safety of government property on all sites across the State. President Buhari Receives Former President, Goodluck Jonathan In Aso Villa (Photos) President Muhammadu Buhari Tuesday received his immediate predecessor in office, Dr Goodluck Jonathan, at State House, Abuja. Dr Jonathan, who is ECOWAS Special Envoy to the Republic of Mali, briefed on the political situation in the West African country, as corollary to efforts by West African leaders to restore stability to the country. President Buhari and four other ECOWAS leaders had visited Bamako, Mali, last month, followed by a virtual extraordinary summit of the sub-regional body. Dr Jonathan, who was in Mali from Monday to Thursday, last week, recounted his meetings with the stakeholders, including political and religious leaders, Ambassadors of US, France, Russia, Germany, European Union, and other important personalities key to peace and cohesion in the country. The main opposition group, M5, he said, continued to insist on the resignation of President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita, a position not acceptable to ECOWAS, which insisted only on democratic process in change of power within its jurisdiction. “We told them that no international organization, including the African Union (AU), United Nations (UN), and others, would agree with their position. We continued to emphasize the need for dialogue,” former President Jonathan stressed. He added that the Constitutional Court had been reconstituted and inaugurated, while vacancies in the Supreme Court had been filled, thus sorting out the judicial arm of government. President Buhari thanked Dr Jonathan for what he called “the stamina you have displayed” on the Mali issue, and counseled further consultations with the Chairman of ECOWAS, President Mahamadou Issoufou of Niger Republic. Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu and his wife, Ibijoke, on Friday visited the Lagos Island Maternity Hospital, Broad Street and some other hospitals in different parts of the State, to celebrate Eid-el-Kabir with in-patients and health practitioners. The Governor and his wife while at the various hospitals chatted with the patients and the medical personnel, cheering them up, encouraging them and also prayed for their recovery. Speaking to journalists, Governor Sanwo-Olu said his unscheduled visit to Lagos Island Maternity, was to share Eid-el-Kabir moments with those in the hospital at a time when every other person is in joyous mood at home. “It is really about the season. So, if you reflect, Eid-el-Kabir is about season of love. It is about season of remembering one another. So people are remembering Prophet Ibrahim; he slaughtered ram, which showed it is a season of giving. “There are people on two sides, the medical officers on the frontline that are meant to be at work but more importantly are patients who for one reason or the other, cannot be with their loved ones,” he said. Justifying his decision to pay unscheduled visit to health practitioners and in-patients at the hospitals, Sanwo-Olu said: “I felt that this is the best place to come and show love; not just to see them but to encourage them and to give them little support from myself and my government. “Coming here, we would also see things around ourselves. It is an unscheduled visit. So, we didn’t prompt anything. I saw them in their natural habit. You can see so many doctors and nurses are on duty and patients are also happy. “We have also seen several patients; mothers that gave birth overnight to fresh new born babies. So, it is just a season to come and thank God for them and their lives and for their families who are not here. For me, that is the most important thing. “We all have to stay calm. It is a period we all need to understand that we need to stay calm and know that government cares. We might not be 'A Star' but we have a good conscience. We have a good heart to do something good to almost everybody. I just want my citizens to see that if we have more resources, we will do a lot for them. This is just simple way of saying thank you to everyone." Speaking on his response to a recent viral video of a boy begging his mother to calm down while punishing him for an offence he committed, Governor Sanwo-Olu said he believes strongly in paying attention and creating time to little things because there might be somebody somewhere who needs a help. He said: “You look at big things but you need to certainly create time for little things as well. That is the difference. You know, you are going to build a bridge and it is nice but you have somebody who is just somewhere who needs a help. “Just this morning (Friday), we rescued somebody who was planning to jump at the Third Mainland Bridge all because he said he has a debt of N500,000. We had to rescue him and we paid the debt. Those little details are what make the difference. “I don’t have two heads, I don’t have 15 fingers. We are still same human beings. So, we need to show that human part of us while we are not losing sight of the big picture. The big picture is that we want to build roads, bridges and new schools. But we also need to pay attention to little one like the young boy on that video. By the way, I have spoken to him and his mother. They are doing great and I will see him one of these days very soon.” Source : https://www.lasgidinews.ng/post/gov-sanwo-olu-wife-celebrate-eid-el-kabir-with-patients-health-practitioners-at-hospitals

David Umahi on Monday innaugurated a 150- bed COVID-19 Isolation and Treatment Centre. The General Hospital, Elinwovbu, Amagu, community in the Abakaliki council was overhauled, reconstructed, and equipped with lasting medical equipment and its capacity strengthened to handle complex medical needs of the people. The State Government had earlier during the state's weekly briefing resolved to revamp the General Hospitals in the state. He said his administration accords the highest priority attention to the salary of workers, health and security of the people arguing that the pandemic is a test to the integrity of the leadership of any nation, expressing hope that interventions in the health sector at this critical time is a welcome development. "Every other thing should wait because our priority is on salary, health, and security. We set up this Committee to monitor what is going on." "We must do everything possible to get all the 13 General Hospitals in the state to be functional." "In addition to this, we will also be releasing one million naira monthly to these hospitals as running costs of fuel and equipment maintenance." "This virus has tested the capacity of leaders to handle emergencies", Umahi restated. LASG Restates Commitment To Welfare Of Residents The Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Parastatals Monitoring, Mr. Afolabi Ayantayo, has restated the commitment of the State Government to improving the welfare of its citizenry. Ayantayo, who disclosed this at the Y2020 Ministerial Press Briefing organised to commemorate the first year in office of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu at the JJT Park, Alausa, on Wednesday, said that the present administration will continue to embark on people-centred plans, policies and programmes in all its activities. In his words “As the State Government repairs and builds new roads, hospitals, clears the drains, invests in the intermodal transport system, empowers more residents, creates more opportunities for economic enhancement and valiantly confronts the deadly COVID-19 pandemic, the foremost drive for the administration has always been to improve the lots of the people because of the Governor’s conviction that citizens are the bedrock of democracy”. The Special Adviser said all Ministries, Departments and Agencies of the State Government perform key roles in delivering specific services to the general public, adding that the Parastatals Monitoring Office, PMO, effectively monitors these agencies to ensure they are being optimally administered and professionally run. Speaking on the activities of the PMO in the last one year, the Governor’s aide said one of the first steps taken was to congregate all Heads of Parastatals and Agencies of the State in fulfilment of its assigned mandate, saying that “In the last one year, the PMO team has visited 94 government companies, agencies and parastatals across the nooks and crannies of the entire area of the State”. “A detailed report of the visitation has been submitted to the Governor, especially on the need to monitor the Agencies more closely. Each now has a file opened for it. I have directed that minute by minute reports of all their activities on a daily basis must be submitted to my Office. Through this, Mr. Governor can obtain an accurate report on any agency, company, institution and parastatals he so desires. Likewise, the office can through this make recommendations to Mr. Governor on any one of them at any point in time”, he added. According to Ayantayo, the PMO has also been involved in facilitating cooperation between budding entrepreneurs who have a business relationship with some Parastatals and also embarked on the review of enabling laws, in collaboration with the Ministry of Justice (Law Reforms Commission), for Parastatals whose laws are obsolete or hindered by their operational guidelines. Consequently, a total number of 54 enabling laws have been forwarded to the Law Reforms Commission for review. Taking a peep into the future, Ayantayo said better days are ahead for the PMO despite the COVID-19 pandemic, stressing that the Office is on the verge of producing a maiden journal, “Lagos Parastatals”, adding that the major objective of the publication is to provide a quick reference guide for organisations, individuals and corporate citizens who intend to partner with the current administration in moving the State forward towards delivering on its T.H.E.M.E.S Agenda. The Special Adviser also disclosed that the PMO will be organising training for executive officers of Parastatals in the State to improve their capacity. He said: “These will involve quarterly workshops (locally) for high ranking members of Parastatals and Biennial (International) strategic management workshops for CEOs of Parastatals and Agencies. The objective of the continuous training of CEOs of Parastatals is to connect top executives of PMO with the vision, programmes, priorities and expectations of the Sanwo-Olu led administration in Lagos State. This skills acquisition programmes are also aimed at developing the participants’ skills and capabilities that are tailored to their specific duties and roles”. On COVID-19, Ayantayo said the pandemic has slowed down the plans for the first quarter, stressing that some of these plans include the deployment of Shared Service Infrastructure (SSI) among Parastatals and Agencies as well as the Single Billing Platform. https://www.lasgidinews.ng/post/lasg-restates-commitment-to-welfare-of-residents
