9 Rescued Kano Children: Mother Raises Alarm Over Son’s ‘strange’ Behaviors
Jamila Saleh, mother of Umar Faruq, one of the nine rescued Kano children that were abducted and taken to Onitsha, Anambra State, has raised an alarm over her son’s strange behaviors.
Recall that the Kano State Police Command which rescued the nine missing children had paraded six members of the kidnap gang. The gang, according to the police, confessed to their crimes.
However, DAILY NIGERIAN reports that the children’s rescue seems to be exposing their parents to grief and disbelief than a respite.
In an interview with our correspondent in Kano, Jamila Saleh, a mother of one of the rescued children, Faruk, who was renamed Onyedika Ogbodo, disclosed that she could no longer contend with some of the strange behaviors her son was showing.
According to her, her 10-year-old son no longer wants to perform the five daily prayers and other Islamic practices.
She stated that whenever Faruq was asked to pray, he would tell her prayer was mere physical exercises.
Mrs Saleh also disclosed that anytime Faruk was eating his meals, he would be performing Christian prayers as well as gestures from his forehead to his left and right shoulders.
“Since the rescue of these children, we started noticing strange behaviors from Umar. “He does not like praying anymore and was even telling us that he would not do it because it is just an exercise.
“On the very day he was reunited with us, he recited Christian prayers instead of the Muslims prayers whenever we bring him food.
“His father and I had to forcefully stop him from doing that and other Christian acts. We had to teach him to say ‘Bismillahi’ before eating the food,” she revealed.
She also lamented that Faruq still exhibits lackluster attitudes towards Islam, saying that he does not want to go to mosque unless with much persuasions from his elder brothers. Mrs Saleh also narrated how her son could not recognize her and his father, when they first met him at police command headquarters after their rescue, a situation that she said made her cry profusely.
“My son was abducted when he was five years, about five years ago so I’m seeing him for the first time after so long. “What made me cry was how he could not recognize me and neither knows his father and I nor had he ever see me in his life. It was a terrible situation,” she stated.
Mrs Saleh also complained that Faruq has completely forgotten Hausa language, as he is now speaking Igbo language and Pidgin English, hence, they could hardly communicate with him. “I am shocked as my son, a fully Hausa-born child, finds it difficult to speak the Hausa language,” she said.
She disclosed that they are now teaching him the Hausa language, describing Faruq as a brilliant boy and fast learner.
She then commended the Kano State Police command for rescuing the abducted children, including her son, thanking the general public for their concern over their plight. https://dailynigerian.com/9-rescued-kano-children-mother-raises-alarm-over-sons-strange-behaviors/?

Two children, who were kidnapped from Gombe State and taken to Anambra State, have been reunited with their parents.
The children were kidnaped while playing along with other children in their parents’ compound. The three suspects are; Patience Opia from Cross River, Ejece Obi, from Anambra State and Blessings John from Bauchi State.
Parading the suspects, the Anambra State Commissioner for Police, John Abang, through the state Police Public Relations Officer, Haruna Mohammed, said the children were kidnapped from Gombe State and were rescued in Anambra State, through intelligence network of security operatives in the state.
According to him, the children who were rescued and put in the welfare department of the police, on sighting their parents, rushed and held them. He said before the children were released, it was confirmed that people who came to claim them were truly their biological parents.
He said the principal suspect, Blessings John, had claimed that she was the biological mother of one of the children while the other one belonged to her late sister.
Abang also said that the suspects had concluded plans to sell each of the children at the cost of N750,000 before luck ran out on them.
Speaking to Daily Trust, their father, Abdulaziz Suleman, said the children were playing in their compound when they were kidnapped.
He said they were grateful to God for enabling them to see their children again after 20 days in the hands of kidnappers. According him, they discovered their children were found in Anambra through the social media.
“One of our neighbours saw the pictures of the boys on the social media that they were rescued in Anambra State, and alerted us. When we confirmed that they were our children, we decided to come down to Anambra State to reclaim them. When the children saw us, they ran to us,” he stated.
While speaking to Daily Trust, Opia who hawks sachet water at the Onitsha main market, said Blessing came to her and told her that one of the children was her child, while the other was her late sister’s child and that they needed somebody to help in training them in school. According to her, she told her (Blessing) that she did not know any person who can take care of the children, but promised to find someone who can assist.
She also said that after some time, she found Ejece Obi and narrated the story to her, after which she promised to be of assistance. “I don’t know the lady apart from when she came to Onitsha and claimed that she was robbed by armed robbers.
Also I didn’t know that there were price tags on the boys. I am just hearing about the N750,000 price for each of the boys. I am not aware of any intention to sell the boys,” she said. https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/2-children-kidnapped-in-gombe-found-in-anambra.html?

Politics › Group Opens El-Rufai Campaign Office In Plateau Ahead Of 2023 Presidency by ManirBK(op): 1:06pm On Oct 31, 2019 |
Nasiriyya Organisation Support Group, NOSG, a political group claiming to be supporting Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State for the 2023 Presidency, has opened a campaign office in Jos, Plateau State.
While inaugurating the executive members, as well as Plateau chapter office of the group in Jos, the NOSG’s national chairman, Ibrahim Garkuwan-Rijau, said they decided to commence putting structures across Nigeria at an early stage to enable them fully drive their quest to success.
“In the North we have started late. If in Lagos State people started calling and supporting Malam Nasiru to contest, why can’t we do it here?,” he queried.
Mr Garkuwan-Rijau, who is also the North West zonal deputy chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, said Governor El-Rufai’s administrative and political antecedents were enough points to support his quest to becoming the next President of Nigeria.
According to him, El-Rufai is the leader Nigeria desired to have in 2023, adding that the group is for all Nigerians, irrespective of political party affiliation.
Also speaking, the Plateau State chairperson of the group, Nafisatu Omar, described Mr El-Rufai as a detribalised and non-religious bigot suitable for the Nigeria’s number one job.
She said; “Malam Nasir El-Rufai is the best person for Nigeria in 2023 because he is not corrupt, he is not a religious bigot, not tribalistic as seen in his governance of Kaduna State, embracing everybody.” https://dailynigerian.com/2023-presidency-el-rufai-campaign-office-opens-in-plateau/?

The Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, on Wednesday said that the ministry would soon commence the sale of housing units built under the National Housing Programme nationwide.
He said that this would be done through an online subscription to allow for transparency and reduce human interference to the barest in the allocation process.
Mr Fashola said this at a one-day stakeholders engagement forum organised by the Lagos State Real Estate Transactions Department with the theme: “Lagos Real Estate: Achieving 21st Century Compliance”
Represented by Sarah Alawode, Controller, Federal Ministry of Housing, Mr Fashola said that housing, apart from being one of the major needs of a man, holds great potential for the economic well being of Lagos State and Nigeria at large.
“It therefore behoves on us all to ensure that the art and practice of housing delivery in all ramifications are advanced for the benefit of the country and teeming population seeking shelter on a daily basis,” he said.
According to him, more states need to play a more active role to ensure a better experience for citizens in the area of land and security of land transaction, thereby attracting investment. https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/more-news/360363-fg-to-begin-sale-of-new-houses-soon-nationwide-minister.html?

Politics › Border Closure: Nigeria Rejects Vietnam’s Rice Importation Plea by ManirBK(op): 9:25am On Oct 31, 2019 |
The Federal Government (FG) has rejected plea by Vietnam that its rice should be allowed into Nigeria.
Instead, the FG asked Vietnamese investors to build rice processing mills in Nigeria, given the country’s large arable lands and potentials in rice farming.
Speaking at the Nigeria-Vietnam Trade and Investment Forum (NVTIF) in Abuja yesterday, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, Sunday Akpan, told the gathering that Vietnam was among the top five rice producers in the world.
Akpan said Nigeria would welcome collaboration with Vietnamese government and investors in the area of building rice processing mills in Nigeria given their vast experience in rice production.
The permanent secretary’s position appears to be a rejection of the appeal of the Vietnamese government that the Federal Government should allow it to export rice to Nigeria at discounted rates.
The Deputy Prime Minister of Vietnam, Vuong Dinh Hue, had on Tuesday made the appeal through the ruling APC when he led a five-man delegation to meet the Adams Oshiomshole-led National Working Committee (NWC) of the party. The appeal may not be unconnected with the biting effect of Nigeria’s recent border closure and ban on rice importation through the land borders.
Rejecting the appeal, the APC Chairman, Oshiomhole, had told the visiting deputy prime minister that Nigeria would not accept such demand from Vietnam, advising the country to rather secure land and invest in rice production in Nigeria.
Oshiomhole said, “If government allows importation of food, our youths will become idle; that will lead to unemployment. We want to promote food security. Rather than importing rice from Vietnam, your (Vietnam) farmers can take advantage of our arable land. We have to do that not only to protect farmers, but to tackle food security,” he said.
The Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) President, Prince Adetokunbo Kayode, in 2017, said the trade volume between the countries was $303.83m, out of which Nigeria’s export to Vietnam was $232.65m and imports from Vietnam was $71.18m.
Kayode said Nigeria’s exports to Vietnam were mainly raw materials, especially cashew nuts, while imports were mainly mobile phones, electronics, textiles, plastics, chemicals and machinery parts.
He said, “Nigeria and Vietnam must devise more areas of economic cooperation in important sectors like oil and gas, maritime, mining, construction, power, agriculture, cement, transportation, engineering, telecommunication and education. This is in order to add maximal value to our economies on a win-win basis and to ensure mutual prosperity.” https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/border-closure-nigeria-rejects-vietnams-rice-importation-plea.html?

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo yesterday described the closure of the land border between Nigeria and the Republic of Benin was a big blow to regional integration. Commenting for the first time since the Nigerian government closed its border with the Republic of Benin on August 20, Akufo-Addo said the move could negatively affect the regional integration agenda. Akufo-Addo, at a meeting with a delegation from the First Bank of Nigeria at the Jubilee House in Accra, said: “We are about to enter a delicate period in the ECOWAS journey looking ahead of the possibility of a single currency and trying to forge greater integration among our economies and at the same time have important security and other issues which confront us. “We have this business of the closure of the Benin Border, which seems to some people to be a big blow to the ECOWAS project”. Akufo-Addo argued that overall interest of member states should override individual national interest. “I believe that there are other considerations that we have to look at and examine to find a way so that we can live in this region in harmony and allow each one of us our national ambition to be fulfilled,” he added. The chairman of the First Bank of Nigeria, Chief Oba Otudeko, affirmed that Akufo-Addo’s government’s economic policies, particularly banking reforms, had made the Ghanaian economy resilient. https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/nigeria-benin-border-closure-big-blow-to-regional-integration-ghanaian-president.html?Mynd44 oam4j lalasticlala |

Officials of the Nigerian Customs Service Tuesday impounded 33 containers bearing expired rice imported from Thailand and China at the Tincan Island port, Apapa, Lagos. Other items seized by the agency include 11 containers of unregistered pharmaceutical products, two containers of used tyres, one container of used clothing. and four containers of refined vegetable oil in retail packs. The impounded containers had a duty paid value of N2.7 billion. Hameed Ali, the Controller General of Customs, said the seizures were as a result of the partial border closure. “One significant finding about this seizure is that all the rice are expired or about to expire,” Mr Ali, a retired army colonel, told journalists in Lagos. ”Also remarkable is the seizure of Tramadol variants and unregistered performance-enhancing drugs among the pharmaceuticals. Recall that in the past, the Service has raised alarm and drew the attention of the general public to the fact that most of the imported rice are expired. “The service had also in the past, highlighted the dangers of the use of Tramadol and had similarly seized and kick-started the destruction of over N14billion of Tramadol recently,” The seizure comes barely a day after five containers of rotten fishand other edibles were discovered in a terminal at the Apapa area. Mr Ali said the 54 containers seized on Tuesday contravened the provisions of Customs & Excise Management Act Cap C45 LFN 2004 Section 46 and 161. He said further investigation would be carried to unravel those behind the importation and possible prosecution. https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/360041-breaking-nigerian-customs-seize-32-containers-of-expired-rice.html?Mynd44 oam4j lalasticlala |

The Nigeria Communication Commission, NCC, on Monday said that the trial of 5G, the fifth generation network technology, would be on trial for three months in the country before actual approval and rollout.
The Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, Prof. Umar Danbatta, said this on the sideline of the Mobile and Disruptive Technology, MoDITECH, Forum 2019 in Lagos.
The theme of the forum is ‘The Power of Digital Services”.
Mr Danbatta said that the trial of the 5G technology would enable the commission to see the key attributes it attained before approval. The executive vice chairman, represented by Engr Banko Wakil, a Director at NCCHe, said 5G was like a proof of concept to be carried out by operators with the existing frequency and spectrum.
He said that as usual, the proof of concept would be tested by all NCC major vendors in the country.
He added that the commission was part and parcel of digital revolution in the country and had taken steps on digital revolution and the major beneficiaries were the financial sector.
Mr Danbatta said that there were emerging new technologies the commission needed to monitor before their full deployment.
”As such, there is need to put in place the right framework for the technology to rise technically. ”Very soon there will be the deployment of 4G in every city to make people in rural area have access to reliable internet services,” he said. https://dailynigerian.com/nigeria-to-run-5g-technology-trial-for-3-months-ncc/?

Politics › CBN Governor Gives Conditions For Reopening Nigerian Borders by ManirBK(op): 8:27pm On Oct 28, 2019 |
The Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, on Monday revealed conditions to be met before the country’s borders could be closed. Speaking with the State House correspondents shortly after meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari, the CBN governor said until neighbouring countries agree to implement mutual anti-smuggling policies, the borders would remain closed. Mr Emefiele stated that Nigerian rice and poultry farmers have particularly been benefiting from the border closure. “In November 2015 President Muhammadu Buhari, the CBN and some state governors went to Kebbi State to launch the Wet Season Rice Farming. “Since then, we have seen an astronomical growth in the number of farmers who have been going into rice farming and our paddy production has gone up also quite exponentially. “Between 2015 and also now, we have also seen an astronomical rise in the number of companies, corporate and individuals that are setting up mills, integrated mills and even small mills in various areas. “We have been embarking on a programme where we are saying if you are involved in the business of smuggling or dumping of rice in the country, we close your account in the banking industry. And that is very effective. “Recently, and this is the absolute truth, about two weeks before the border closure, the chairman of the Rice Processors Association – incidentally, he owns Umza Rice in Kano – called me and said that all the rice millers and processors are carrying in their warehouses nothing less than 25,000 metric tons of milled rice. “This rice has been unsold because of the smuggling and dumping of rice through Republic of Benin and other border posts that we have in the country and that he would want us to do something about it. “Secondly, we also have members of the Poultry Association of Nigeria who complained that they have thousands of crates of eggs that they could not sell; even some of the processed chickens that they could not sell, also arising from smuggling and dumping of poultry products into Nigeria. “A week after the borders were closed, the same rice millers association called to tell us that all the rice that they had in their warehouses have all been sold,” Mr Emefiele added. https://dailynigerian.com/emefiele-gives-conditions-for-reopening-nigerian-borders/?Mynd44 oam4j lalasticlala |

Angbulu: The good thing about border closure is, it shields indigenous companies from intense competition. It's purely protectionism. The Western powers kicking against it are merely acting to protect their interests. Which is understandable. Admit it or not, protectionism brought Europe and America to where they are today.
The sad thing about border closure is simple, we lose income from imports and these products go into the black market, where they are still for exorbitant prices.
Border closure will yield it's the fullest benefit when ingenious companies are empowered to produce and sell.
Am I missing anything? Most of the Neighbors in Africa don't respect our sanctity as a nation thereby turning Nigeria into their dumping grounds of bad products that ended up destroying our environment and the people. What Nigeria is saying is that follow the normal process as enshrined in the international Chambers of commerce guidelines by adhering and paying all the tax and charges attached to each kind of business transactions you are carrying. We close our borders because we want to grow our own economy and answer our name as the giant of Africa. The Treaties and agreements signed by countries was for a legal form of business not t the other way round.Mynd44 |
