Alleged polymer notes scam: EFCC probes Soludo

FORMER governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Professor Chukwuma Soludo, who is also the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the February 6, 2010 election in Anambra State, is facing a probe by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over the handling of N20 polymer notes contract in 2006.

Soludo is already facing court cases over the manner in which he emerged the candidate of the PDP in the 2010 election, with one of the candidates already securing an injunction to bar him from parading himself as a candidate.

But apart from the battle for Anambra, the Nigerian Tribune gathered that the presidency had given the nod to the EFCC to commence investigations into the alleged fraud over the printing of the N20 polymer notes in 2006. The news broke recently that Australian authorities were probing Securency, a firm which won the printing of the Nigerian naira notes in 2006 for Euro 59.88 per 1,000 notes.

It was gathered that President Umaru Yar’Adua was disturbed last week, when the National Chairman of the PDP, Prince Vincent Ogbulafor, and some members of the National Working Committee (NWC) visited him over the Anambra saga.

After the PDP NWC members briefed him on the unfolding situation, the president was said to have expressed concern that the PDP leaders had led the party into a quagmire over the Soludo matter.

It was gathered that some initial reports on the polymer notes saga had reached the president before the visit and had been referred to the EFCC.

A Presidency official said that Professor Soludo would soon be questioned over the deal. Shortly after the Awka high court granted injunction against the ex-CBN governor, a top PDP member said: “That is not the last; we learnt the EFCC is coming for him.

“It was on the basis of intelligence reports available that the president asked the party’s leaders to ensure the process leading to the primaries was transparent, while not being prejudicial to the innocence of the former CBN boss in all allegations. But the process seemed to have been fluffed and the party is battling with the aftermath. That the polymer notes scandal is also coming up now is seen as a distraction and the president is of the view that the candidate that would lead his party to victory should be able to concentrate on campaigns,” a source close to the Presidency said at the weekend.

Muslim rebels on Monday expanded their attack on Nigerian security forces to three northern states, with at least 80 people dead in two days of clashes, security sources said.

Gun battles between police and members of a local Islamic group, which wants a wider adoption of Islamic law across Nigeria, were reported in Yobe, Kano and Borno states.

The attacks came a day after more than 50 people were killed in neighbouring Bauchi state. The violence was not connected to unrest in the oil-producing Niger Delta in the south.

The four northern states are among the 12 of Nigeria's 36 states that started a stricter enforcement of sharia in 2000 -- a decision that has alienated sizeable Christian minorities and sparked bouts of sectarian violence that killed thousands.

A senior member of the rebel group Boko Haram, which opposes Western education and demands the adoption of sharia law in all of Nigeria, threatened further attacks.

"We do not believe in Western education. It corrupts our ideas and beliefs. That is why we are standing up to defend our religion," Abdulmuni Ibrahim Mohammed told Reuters after his arrest in Kano state.

"Even if I'm arrested, there are more out there to do the job."

The government estimates 55 have been killed in the two days of fighting, but estimates from security sources and residents add up to at least 80.

President Umaru Yar'Adua ordered heightened security in the affected regions and directed police to take all necessary action to contain and repel the militants.

More than 200 ethnic groups generally live peacefully side by side in the West African country, although civil war left 1 million people dead between 1967 and 1970 and there have been bouts of religious unrest since then.

CLASHES SPREAD

Members of the Boko Haram set several churches, a police station and a prison ablaze in Maiduguri, the state capital of Borno, residents said.

A Reuters reporter said he saw at least 20 bodies laid out on the street as his family was evacuating among hundreds of others. Gunshots and explosions could be heard throughout the city.

"The (militants) are right now moving into town. Riot police and soldiers are everywhere, but the boys are not afraid of them," said Gana Marari, another resident of Maiduguri.

In northern Yobe and Kano states, clashes between rebels and security forces killed at least four and injured 10. A Kano police spokesman said officers had arrested more than 100 gunmen.

Boko Haram, which means "education illegal," began its string of attacks in the north-eastern city of Bauchi on Sunday after the arrest of some of its members.

More than 50 Nigerians were killed and more than 100 arrested in those clashes, prompting the Bauchi state governor to impose a night-time curfew on the state capital city. There were no reports of violence in Bauchi on Monday.

You might get a job, but you will not go as far as a university graduate would (promotion wise).

This happens both in the private and public sectors in Nigeria.

Best bet, do jamb ume and get straight admission in a university

Do an OND and then seek admission to get a B.sc

If you have an HND, you can pursue a Master's degree there after.

People have the right to protest; whenever the world bank or G8 holds meetings, there are always

CNN's documentary misses new face of Lagos

IT was about time to leave house two mornings ago when I heard a reporter on the Cable Network News (CNN) mention 'Lagos'. I stopped to listen. It was a story on the worst places for expatriates to work in the world, and apparently, Lagos topped the list. The report was based on Business Week's findings and other places mentioned included Riyadh in Saudi Arabia and some city in India but we had pride of place as the very worst host of all the world's countries to expatriates.

The reporter, whose name I can't recall at the moment, told the CNN desk anchor he was trying to reach an expatriate in Lagos who would talk about his experiences here. He didn't forget to throw in a jibe when he said the difficulty in reaching that expatriate confirmed his theory about the state of affairs in Lagos. According to the reporter, the issues in Lagos included severe crime, horrendous traffic and many other major problems.

He finally got through to the Lagos expatriate and it turned out to be Roland Ebelt, the Managing Director of the Nigerian Bottling Company, makers of Coca-Cola, an expatriate who had been resident in Lagos for eight years. Roland Ebelt didn't put a foot wrong once, saying the city wasn't as bad as some painted it, and he actually had had a good time, majorly, for almost a decade. When asked what his greatest challenge in Lagos was, Ebelt said it
