Anyone bundling the Yorubas as parasites as the Northerners needs to get examined.

Besides Oil and gas, cocoa is the biggest export for Nigeria
and 70% of the cocoa produced in Nigeria comes from the South West (with
Ondo state being the highest producer in the country)

PoliticsRe: Describe Sanusi Lamido Sanusi In Your Own Words by maxell(f): 7:01am On Mar 01, 2012
He was executing a total Northern agenda until GEJ replaced Yar'adua as president.

After the banking consolidation under Soludo, Southerners emerged as most
of the CEOs/MDs and top executives of the banks. Sanusi Lamido was going
to restructure the scene to the benefit of the Northerners.

This was why he came up with the idea of regional banks - North east,
North central, SW, SE etc and limited the number of years an MD
can serve as a bank MD/CEO (leading to the removal of Elumelu, Jim Ovia etc).

He also used govt funds to bail out "failed banks"
and was going to sell the shares to those he favored leaving original
shareholders (mostly southerners) out in the cold. The goal of the bail
out was to shift controlling stakes of the banks from the Southerners.

It would've been absolutely devastating if Yar'adua still remained in power
with Sanusi as CBN governor.

My friend, please get your fact right, the bonds were enthusiatically well received and oversubscribed.

Earlier reports were that the issue was under-subscribed. Later on, they report that the bonds
were actually over-subscribed by 2.5 times ($1.5 billion).

So you are both right; the news media outlet are to blame wink
PoliticsRe: If Nigeria Collapses: What Happens To Abuja? by maxell(f): 1:38am On May 21, 2010
Abuja will go to the North. I think this is a no-brainer.
PoliticsRe: If Nigeria Collapses: What Happens To Abuja? by maxell(f): 12:10am On Mar 08, 2010
the previous responders are correct; abuja has no underlying economy. It barely generates anything internally.
It was built on oil money.

If Naijiria splits, it'll go to the north (of course), but they would have
to borrow money to develop it further and maintain its infrastructure.

May be the north can build abuja with loans from Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar or Yemen  grin

Becomerich,

The UN estimated that Nigerians in the diaspora send $10 billion back home yearly.

Where do you think this money is going to - the North ?

What you are looking for is good road, health care, airports and others.  This is how you measure development, and the north have more in good road, health care and airport than south or yorubaland.
How about having a roof over your head, eating 3 square meals a day, provision of non-govt jobs, you know, standard of living ?

Becomerich, southerners have a higher standard of living than northerners. forget all these roads
and maps of yours.

This is not to say there is no poverty in the south

Thank God Goodluck Jonathan is not a yoruba man.

If he were, Nairalanders would have been labeling him all over the place as
a hausa slave with no back bone.

Since the VP is an Ijaw man, then his case
is different. No cause for alarm.

so becomerich, having lengthier highways means they are more developed than the south  huh

Besides, the thread is about regions of more poverty. The ibadan thingy was a mere digression.

Ibadan was around even before Lagos (it had more population than Lagos at one point).

I hate that we are quickly turning this into yet another "ATTACK THE NORTH" rather than accept responsibility for the squalor that exists in our own backyard thread. Considering all you have up there and how long we have been at this BLAME GAME, we ought to be readon to move past this need to COMPARE the level of decay to focus more on resolving the issues and getting ourselves off such lists.
Where was I attacking the North? Me stating that they do not embrace education means I am attacking them  undecided

kobo, I am just stating the honest truth. In order to get out of any situation, an understanding of the underlying
problem must me known and confronted.

If you have a relative that is a high school drop out, and as such, can't make a decent living, Wouldn't you bring
it to his/her attention so he can get his act together by going back to school or seek some career training ?

I meant no harm girlfriend. I was just speaking the honest truth  wink
PoliticsRe: Richyblack Has Been Sacked? by maxell(f): 3:28pm On Dec 25, 2009

PoliticsRe: Regional Poverty In Nigeria- North, South-West Worse Hit by maxell(f): 3:12pm On Dec 25, 2009
Southerners have more going for them for a lot of reasons.

1. They embraced education more than the northerners. They are able to go abroad and
seek greener pastures.

2. There are more southerners overseas that are able to send money home to their loved ones, thus,
helping alleviate poverty.

3. The southeasterners, as we all know, are very entrepreneurial in nature. They have businesses
scattered all over Nigeria and rely less on the govt to take care of them.

These are the main reasons why poverty is more rampant in the North than the south.

By the way, how do you expect the North to thrive with an almajiri type culture and mind set in place ?
