well if you had a more efficient police they will learn from you |
Getting some training from the British is not more shameful than wallowing in blind Pan Africanism while crime rates in Nigeria skyrocket. |
In a desperate society like Nigeria, there is more likelihood for the unforseen to happen. Even if bullion vans are led with Armoured Tanks robbers will still intercept them. They will simply equip themselves and outnumber the police. But the issue is, having a great police is not about being able to act Commando or Robin Hood on the streets of Lagos as that will simply endanger the public. What is paramount is having a police that has the resources and skills to track down the criminals after such events and that is where those who are already perfect in the game come in. Nigeria needs a police force that arrives at the scene of a crime investigation and professionally looks for leads rather than beating up and bullying members of that local community. That is where adequate training by a world class police force comes in. It is so easy to call for salary increase and adequate funding which simply mean more money for the IGs and AIGs to share, but the fact remains that Nigerian police needs structural and institutional reforms. The solution to every problem is not really to throw money at them. |
Mamjama It is baffling why do you always turn every topic on police to a campaign for "raw funds" for the police ![]() ![]() BigB1 (even Mckren is now staying far away from short cuts)Not too sure where you are getting to with that. |
Digiman I disagree with you, the British Police is great. Your casestudy for criticising the British Police is Youth Anti Social behaviour, that is not fair at all. Want to know what it means to have a police ?Think of the Murder enquiry on Alexander Litvinienko and how Polonium 210 was traced Think of the depth of investigation on murder enquiries arround the shores of Britain Think of the fact that a police man arrives at a scene and treats everyone in a civil and modest manner while appreciating the very essence of not provoking local people in carrying out their duties. Those are why the British police is great. However this topic is not about the efficiency of British Police, but on credibility of President Yaradua's move. I think the move is great and little by little we are getting there. Nigeria recently launched Biometric passports through the Immigration service, someday we will all have National identities. Hence their is need to upgrade our police to the digital age and build a force who realise that they should by every sense of the word be "the public's best friend" |
do not mean to sound pessimistic, but something tells me that our stupid leaders will not follow these steps; it will be short cuts as usual (Mckren's style).LOL Mckren must be so popular in your heart (He love's me) The Strategy to me is welcomed, our police is so unprofessional. However reforming the police has wider issues, Some police officers engage in bribery and other nefarious activities not by choice but cause its a means to survival in our society. Hence while we celebrate the new move we must understand that changes will not be radical cause even the British police will fail in a society where poverty, corruption thrives. |
olanajim:I agree with you |
A lot of boys on the streets answer Mohamed So if the class voted for Mohamed why should the teacher know that it is not one of those names the kids hear on the streets they voted for ![]() ![]() ![]() It is like being arrested for calling my dog "John" because there was a God's messenger called "John the baptist". It is senseless, babaric and absolutely shameful. |
I have nothing more to loose if we go to war because my girlfriend who accidentally is from cameron just left me because i am serious and really passionate about this topic. I don't care if goes, infact i have started my own bakassi war.LOL that is the greatest joke of the day Back to topic I heard Prince Bola Ajibola saying he spent 22yrs of his life making sure Bakasi is handed over to Cameroun peacefully. He should consider those 22yrs as wasted years. No one else has the solution to this problem than the Bakasi people, they should be allowed to decide their own Nationality whether Nigeria, Cameroun or Bakasi Republic. |
Abedisi:You simply have no clue, at least 2 out of your list are in the Federal Executive Council meeting every fortnight to decide your future |
This is the kind of mindset that cost us Bakasi When you are going to any negotiation table you dont start showing a lukewarm attitude or develop any kind of cold feet The priority of those negotiating from Nigeria's point of view was simply to avert war not to keep Bakasi. If your opponents see such fear they will simply capitalize on it hence why Cameroun and France were so quick to deploy war ships at our borders. Nobody likes wars, trust me Cameroun does not like war anymore than we do. When diplomats say they will use any means necessary, or that all options are still on the table, it does not mean they are ready for war, it is just to remind your opponents the consequence of being irrationally disident. But in our case before we go negotiate with Cameroun we first talk how we are afraid of war with our neighbours and brothers. A brotherhood Cameroun hardly believe's in. |
ICJ did not legislate Bakasi to Nigeria either and can not relegislate it to cameroun People's origin are not determined by court ruling, even the Bostwana highest court could not grant their country government their wish of relocating the Bush men of Bostwana. Reason: The Bostwana Bush people have a right to dwell in their ancestral home if they so please Why should a court like ICJ do such. This is not about being emotional, Nigeria has become irresponsible to its citizens for too long. |
This is not about war or no war LET THE BAKASI PEOPLE DECIDE their own Nationality |
Bakassi is not "our land".The ICJ has already given its judgment on the issue, its time we abide by the decisionA few questions: 1. Why should a judge sitting at the Hague know more who the owners of Bakasi are than those who their ancestors dwelled on the land. 2. Why should a Judge sitting at the Hague choose for the Bakasi people what their Nationality should be. 3. Why should "OPINNIONS" of some judges sitting at the Hague change the lives, tradition, ancestral home etc of the Bakasi people expecially when it is a know fact that the ICJ does not have compulsory jurisdiction on any matter. Protecting your territorial integrity and sovereignty is the right of every Nation and Nigeria was too hasty to implement the ruling of ICJ. At Independence Bakasi was part of Nigeria, in essence it has always been part of Nigeria since the existence of Nigeria. And no one else knows better what part of the world or continent Bakasi is than the Bakasi people. Nigeria has a good case, while I think all amounts of caution should be applied to avoid going to war with cameroun our country has a duty to give the Bakasi people security. Cameroun will not be as generous as we have been to them as most of their actions clearly show. |
So what is the long cut solution ?Suggesting that Ibori should not be probed because his forefathers has not been probe. Or subscribing to the view that the war against corruption is targeted at the South or Accepting that someone arrested for laundering Nigeria's money abroad should not be prosecuted because it is not in the interest of Nigeria to return our money BigB1 If there is anyone being irrational here, I am afraid to say you are the one. Though am not too sure whats beclouding your reasoning. |
Oprah's opinion is not more important than the reality of hopelessness and despair that exist's in our country, besides Oprah's opinnion does not stem from the number of Nigerians prosecuted for corruption but the number of Naija boys involved in 419. These boys are largely engaing in 419 because their commonwealth has been looted by kleptomaniacs Ibori |
I have refused to comment on this China crase, but since you've mentioned it. The so called chinese companies, how much do they pay their staff, what kind of staff welfare policies do they have, they are worse slave drivers. I am so against our partnership with China not being strategic, we need to keep them for what we need them for and importantly keep the Americans for what we need them for. I would rather work for Exxonmobil or Chevron than a Chinese oil company, the terms of service are miles apart. It was not me who made the above comment. Celebrating an Exxonmobil that lift's crude oil without refining them locally does not seem like being awake from sleep either. |
When people have invested so much money to site factories, business is booming, profit margin is high, Government will periodically increase minimum wage little by little until it gets to world class standard. That is how it is done. By then it will be too late for any investor to consider quiting because they are still making profit, and yet so much time and money may have been commited to quit. (Besides that they will have no choice but to accept Government regulations) The labour force would have learnt how to work on Production lines. Why do most UK and US manufacturers produce in china ? Cheap labour!!!!And the country is better for it. |
Buluti That an American Company pays its staff more than Chineese could simply be changed by ammending Labour Laws. Their is nothing strategic about that and most times employee salary is not first on the list when it comes to discussions with foreign investors. And I don think that is most strategic thing from National interest point of view. What should be of interest to us on the long term and by every sense of the word strategic is Technology Transfer. If the Chineese agree to local refining of crude and local manufacturing and siting factories (not just crude oil lifting companies) that is more strategic than anything from a Nigerian point of view. All we need to now do is to amend our labour laws and welfare scheme for company employees. I do agree with you that we should not have permanent friends but permanent strategic interests, but their is nothing strategic about placing priority on company salary scheme over our push for local manufacturing. |
Well the talk of Ibori being rich before the begining of mankind does not hold water He was not accused of converting a N20,000 farm to N2b. Nor was the allegation against him merely based on the fact that he could afford a bombadier jet. Links have been established how he diverted funds meant for state education and engineering projects into private interest. You can choose to believe what you want, just made this submission for the records. |
I think it is just down to hard luck Ibadan is just unlucky to have an Adedibu, people get wiser as they age. But Adedibu at 80 is a depature from this rule. |
Presidency is a large institution. Lets be careful not to trivialize the war on corruption, if we take this war to the extent that Nigerians should begin to decide what should be on the President's food menu, then consider the battle lost. Before now, things like these were never brought to the fore and President Yaradua should not be made to regret his attempt at being transparent. Though one question I have is: The so called animals are they property of the Federal Government or the President's personal pets ![]() ?? |
Do you honestly think any person will take with a pinch of salt what is posted on the Africom website. It is like posting from an Al-Qaeda website on a terrorism debate. What else will they say ![]() ? |

As long as Nigeria, South Africa and Lybia are opposed to it. This proposal will obviously go no where. The acceptance by Liberia is not necessarily suprising as their declaration only came roughly about a week after US granted them debt relief. They can mortgage their future if they wish, we can only wish them luck. We all learnt with dismay in History classes how our teritories, forefathers, resources etc were split like cake in the 19th century in what was describe as "Scramble for Africa" by Europeans. This was largely done by deploying of armed forces to safegaurd strategic interests of the west. The same is about to happen in our generation and people are talking about the US being the greatest aid donnor to Africa. Only those who do not know the nitty-gritty of aid agreements will celebrate it. Aid agreements can only be compared to your insurance documents where the few good things are written in Large and Bold fonts while the consequences and shackles to obtaining full support in the event of an accident is written in smaller and dodgy fonts. America will remain allies to Nigeria, but our relations must be reviewed to a symbiotic one not the present parasitic one. When Dr Rilwanu Lukman and his team announced that FG will review the activities of companies like Shell and Exxonmobil, I thought that was great. This present news that our govt will not back a US base anywhere in West Africa is the best Foreign Policy I have heard from a Nigerian Government since I was born. America is welcomed to do business with Nigeria anytime anyday. But Military base? Unacceptable!!!!!!! @Kobo Tell me why America should have Military bases in other countries and no one else will have military bases in theirs ![]() ![]() ![]() |
Kobojunkie:I must be arguing with someone not in my league I have a resource which other people want. The fairest thing they can do is to come and bid, negotiate etc to legitimately have it not to bully me or bully others so that the cost of that comodity will solely reamain the same or the commodity will only be available to them |
Kobojunkie:America should come up with deals and trade agreements better than those of China and India to beat them Not by establishing military base FYI: To be honest if you want to brand me anti-american cause of my views goodluck. I will not even attempt to prove otherwise cause it means nothing to me. I have only known how to be Nigerian and not pursuing American pasport, hence loyalty to stars and stripes means absolutely nothing to me. |
There is no need for unnecessary debate, I will sleep fine tonight because at least I have a President who is smart enough to read in between the lines. There was Rwandan Genocide, Crisis in Somalia, Siera leone, Congo, Ivory Coast etc which did not necessitate any kind of US military base in Africa. For many years we called for fairer trade for Africa, but all that call was ignored. All of a sudden China and India begins to develop and begin to strike more juicy deals and fairer trade with Africa, instead of the US to compete economically they prefer to deploy a military command to "protect their so-called strategic interests". This people must be thinking we will remain fools forever. If you don know what this is let me tell you what it is: This is simply adopting 19th century "Scramble for Africa" tactics in the face of modern day economic competitions. I must say it is shameful and contemptous to say the least that American could even come up with such a proposal This is not about Anti-Americanism but it is about time someone told USA to start thinking of Africans like human beings. To the Site Administrator Thanks for editing my topic, but it is kind of awkward when my views become inconsistent with my topic because the topic I posted originally has been edited and yet presented as though it was I who wrote it. I thought it will be more professional to remove entirely threads you find unacceptable than editing them as that will destroy the very essence of blogging on a public forum which is the ability to express my views. |
Ask people like me who is OKIRO, I can show you pics of OKIRO, Jonathan THE VP sitting in my balcony with his hands fold. ![]() |
good move by the Presidency Africa needs industrialization not militarization, If America thinks their interests in Africa are threatened they should secure their presence economically by engaging in honest and fair trade with Africa not deploying a military command in another man's land. Period!!!!!! |
THE Federal Government announced on Monday that it would not host the United States military's new Africa-wide military command, taking Africa’s most populous nation and a top source of American oil imports out of contention. The government made its position official on when President Umaru Yar’Adua met with state governors and federal lawmakers. Nigeria is also against the US command basing its headquarters elsewhere in West Africa, where the country of 140 million people is a major military and diplomatic heavyweight, said the Kwara State governor, Dr. Bukola Saraki, who announced the government's position after the meeting. US military officials couldn't immediately be reached for comment. The US had said it aimed to better protect America’s strategic interest in Africa and assist African countries with military training and conflict prevention. But a number of African countries, including Libya and South Africa, had expressed reservations about a move that could signal an expansion of US influence on the continent and may focus primarily on protecting oil interests. http://nigeriamasterweb.com/paperfrmes.html |
New Delhi, November 16: Indian authorities have ruled that tourists visiting the country's monuments must pay at a fixed local rupee rate rather than in dollars to shore up revenues as the greenback falls against major currencies. http://www.expressindia.com/latest-news/Thanks-but-no-thanks-India-curbs-tourist-dollars/239874/ |
