Retired Police Officers mobilize against Nuhu Ribadu as IG

Retired Police chiefs and top members of the PDP are currently piling pressures on the Umar Musa Yar'adua the so-called president -elect not to appoint Mr. Nuhu Ribadu, the current EFCC chairman as the new Inspector General of Police come May 29 2007.

Though they are openly opposed to Nuhu Ribadu for various reasons which include claims that Nuhu Ribadu has not attended management level courses at the War college and NIPSS at Kuru Jos, Saharareporters investigators have found out that the main force behind the retired police officers is retired General Ibrahim Babangida who was said to be deeply hurt by the way Nuhu Ribadu rubbished him and his first son, Mohammed, even though the EFCC did not prosecute both father and son despite huge evidence of corruption against them.

Already, IBB is said to have given Nuhu Ribadu's sack as the main condition for supporting Umar Yar'ardua in the new government that will be ushered in if the results of theseriously flawed elections hold.

The retired police officers are said to be united by the fear that an overzealous Nuhu Ribadu as IG will cut off their current means of livelihood which involves getting paid hefty sums for bailing out high level criminals out of police custody. Some of those involved in the type of "consultancy jobs" typically gets paid huge sums to intervene with the IG to get armed robbers, hired assasins, scammers and other serious criminals out of police custody.

this talk of Yar'adua being his own man simply does not make sense to me.

If he is able to deliver constant electricity, good roads, quality education, world class health facilities etc. What ever is his relationship with OBJ becomes justified and for all I care secondary.

Seriously how is it my problem or that of anybody if Yaradua never greets OBJ when he sees him or on the otherhand decides to fly to ota farm every morning to postrate to OBJ before coming to office.
If he does what genuine leaders do which is to improve the lives of Nigerians who cares about their relationship.

The challenges and aspirations of 2007 Nigeria are far different from the Nigeria under which Awo operated. So no need for Yaradua to fit in Awo, Tafawa Balewa or Ziks shoes.

So much intrigues, that is the thing about US foreign policy always the same whether democrats or republicans, maybe different approach
It is possible the senators were coarsed into passing that biil, they claimed intelligence reports show that attack in US is imminent. So the only way to stop the imminent attack is re-invoke Donald Rumsfeld gospel of pre-emptive strike. Attack them before they attack.

Trust secret service they may be the ones behind that game.

See how definition of success by the so called world's greatest leader has evolved over the years and you will know how hopeless this war is.

Definition of success in Iraq an evolving theme
Current measure of victory hardly resembles standard of 4 years ago
By Eric Rosenberg
Hearst Newspapers
Tucson, Arizona | Published: 05.20.2007

advertisementWASHINGTON — The Bush administration's definition of success in Iraq has changed drastically since the March 2003 invasion, and the current measure of victory hardly resembles the standard promulgated four years ago.
Back then, the U.S. defined success as finding and destroying Saddam Hussein's weapons of mass destruction, installing a democratic, pro-U.S. government to serve as a model for despotic Arab states and rooting out any terrorists who may have found safe haven there under Saddam's rule.
Starting with the embarrassing discovery that Saddam Hussein had no weapons of mass destruction, Iraqi realities have forced the Bush administration to redefine its standards of success.
The U.S.-led invasion has also triggered a tenacious insurgency that is attracting Islamic militants from around the world. And the administration is desperately trying to bolster the U.S.-backed Baghdad government to become more effective in fighting insurgents and to take steps to reconcile competing ethnic factions.
Against this background, Bush administration officials now define success in far more diminished terms.
The following is an outline of the administration's evolving definition of success:
March 2003: Two days after the U.S-led invasion, then-Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld laid out success in the following terms.
● Ending Hussein's regime.
● Locating and eliminating Iraq's weapons of mass destruction.
● Capturing and driving out terrorists located in Iraq and gathering intelligence on links between terrorist networks in Iraq and elsewhere.
● Securing Iraq's oil fields and using them to resuscitate Iraq's foundering economy.
● Creating the conditions "for a rapid transition to a representative self-government
."
June 2003: Three months after the invasion, as the U.S. and British forces encountered constant insurgent attacks, the administration began to measure success in terms of training Iraqis to defend against insurgents and to assume governance duties then conducted by the U.S. through the Coalition Provisional Authority.
Rumsfeld asserted that no amount of American might would defeat the enemy. "The problem's going to be dealt with over time as the Iraqis assume more and more responsibility for their own country," he said on June 30.
November 2003: Eight months after the invasion, the insurgency had taken root and flourished. November was a particularly bad month for American forces, with the highest monthly death toll (82 killed) since the war's onset.
Rumsfeld and Air Force Gen. Richard Myers, then chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, defined success in terms of narrow tactical-level achievements, such as the number of civilian facilities opened up by coalition forces, the number of Iraqi troops that American troops had trained and the number of enemy weapons captured.
"There have been truly impressive accomplishments," Rumsfeld said on Sept. 15.
"Some 600 individual reconstruction processes have been completed. All the schools, hospitals, and universities are open. We've gone from zero Iraqis providing for their own security up to 56,000 Iraqis, police, army, border guards, site protection, civilian defense."
April 2004: The U.S had to shelve the counting of Iraqi forces as a yardstick of success because of their dismal performance. Maj. Gen. Martin Dempsey, commander of the 1st Armored Division, said that about 10 percent of Iraqi security forces "actually worked against" U.S. troops during recent violence, while another 40 percent deserted.
Rumsfeld called in then-Maj. Gen. David Petraeus, to start retraining the Iraqi military.
In the 14-month American occupation of Iraq thus far, this was the second-worst month for American forces, with 135 service members killed.
May 2004: President Bush told an Arab newspaper that "the definition of 'success' (in Iraq) is a society which is peaceful and free, that governs itself, a society in which children can go to school and which the health care is good and which the infrastructure is strong, and in which the businesses flourish."
June 2005: Rumsfeld made it clear that President Bush's definition of success as a "peaceful" Iraq was no longer valid.
"Success for the coalition should not be defined as domestic tranquility in Iraq," Rumsfeld said June 27. "Other democracies have had to contend with terrorism and insurgencies for a number of years, but they have been able to function and eventually succeed."
June 2005: The next day, June 28, President Bush reverted to a prior definition of success: The number of Iraqi units capable of fighting militias, foreign fighters and Baathist remnants so that Americans can leave.
"Our strategy can be summed up this way: As the Iraqis stand up, we will stand down," Bush said.
The U.S. employed a four-tier grading system — levels 1 through level 4 — to measure Iraqi forces, with level 1 at the peak of readiness for taking on the enemy. The idea was to have as many Iraqi units as possible in the level 1 category so that American forces can depart.
September 2005: U.S. military officials are forced to rethink the use of the battalion grading system as a standard of success after revealing that the number of level 1 battalions had actually declined from three battalions to one. By February 2006, not a single Iraqi battalion was at level 1 capability.
Rumsfeld grappled for a new definition, declaring that it did not matter how many units were at level 1. Regarding the decline in readiness of Iraqi units, Rumsfeld said on Sept. 30: "Its relevance is minimal." Later, Rumsfeld and military officials would only discuss a larger grouping that combined Iraqi units at level 1 and level 2.
January 2007: President Bush announced on Jan 10 an escalation of American forces into Baghdad. He defined success as American and Iraqis forces "reducing the violence in Baghdad."
"If we increase our support at this crucial moment, and help the Iraqis break the current cycle of violence, we can hasten the day our troops begin coming home," Bush said.
April 2007: President Bush drops his goal of a "peaceful" Iraq as a measure of success. "If the definition of success in Iraq or anywhere is no suicide bombers, we'll never be successful," he said on April 19.
May 2007: With the U.S. occupation in its fifth year and violence surging despite the influx of additional American troops, U.S. officials lower the bar again.
Defense Secretary Robert Gates said May 7 that for the U.S. troop escalation to be judged a success, American forces need not bring stability to Baghdad.
"The goal in September is not whether the violence has been significantly reduced, or stability has been brought … but rather whether it has been reduced to a level that the political reconciliation process is moving forward in some meaningful way," Gates said.

Yes, going to war was total rubbish, but america can't just leave now, they must finish and cleanup the havoc they have created.
Howhuhhuhhuh?

No one has a clue how to deal with the problem. Bush's Army surge is already failing. Staying any further in the hope to clean up the mess is simply postponing dommsday. America should simply announce a pullout timetable and withdraw their troops.

Trust me if they do this Iraqis will sort themselves out, maybe theymay not start enjoying democracy immediately butthey will surely find peace.

As long as America keeps on wasting its time, the chess game they are playing with Iran and Syria with people's lives in Iraq will continue.
PoliticsRe: I Won't Attend Yar'adua's Inauguration—atiku by McKren(m): 2:00pm On May 28, 2007
What exactly is not very accurate?

That the house of assembly cannot pass into law a bill to introduce Sharia in a state?

That the constitution does not make provision for Sharia to be implemented in areas that the majority wants it?
Those arguments in themselves are accurate, but the same argument in response to babasin who thinks Yaradua as Governor oversaw a legal system that implemented Sharia Law on a Criminal case, is not very accurate.
Because by that you are simply justifying the application of Sharia law to criminal cases which is not very accurate.

Besides that  the Sate House has a responsibility to ensure that their bill on Sharia comforms with the Nigerian constitution. Sharia Court of appeal only has jurisdiction on customary cases in which parties to the case subscribe to.
Anything contrary to that is an attempt to re-write the constitution through the back door.
PoliticsRe: Igbo Igp Reality Or A Joke? by McKren(m): 1:38pm On May 28, 2007
Afam

Power shift and/or rotational presidency is something we must practice for the interest of unity in Nigeria today, no apologies for taking such a stand.
I dont think also you need to appologise for that stand, because I did finally subscribe to that view regardless of my wish to see a Donald Duke Presidency.

But then that power sharing ideology should be implemented in all facets of life and that is why I say there should be no double standards. In the interest of National Unity.
Otherwise Yaradua can as well appoint all his cabinet members from Katsina if he thinks they are the most competent.

With all due respect Afam I think you are a great poster, but sometimes I think you strive too hard to sound politically correct.
PoliticsRe: I Won't Attend Yar'adua's Inauguration—atiku by McKren(m): 1:26pm On May 28, 2007
well that is not very accurate, there is nothing wrong about a state adopting sharia court of appeal in its legal system. But the problem is that often times states that have adopted it have always mis-applied it.
The Sharia court of appeal has no jurisdiction to hear criminal cases that is why most people who have been sentenced to death have had there case over-turned by court of appeal.

People are confusing having a type of customary court with a particular religious inclination with having a state law. There is no such thing in the constitution as a state being governed by a particular kind of law different from Nigerian constitution. That is simply illegal.

The constitution did not in any way give provision to State House of Assembly making laws that do not conform to the Nigerian Constitution which is the highest law of the land.

We need to get this straight.

Frankly if I am one of these newly elected leaders I will simply change my ways. What happened to good old honesty so that you have peace of mind.

Atiku is simply on the run, his activities is as good as that of the governor of Rivers who 8days to handover was applying for visa simultaneously to 4 counties, or that of Abia who handed over 48hours before time just to evade arrest, or that of Jigawa who speculations are that he may have escaped through one of the North Eastern borders enroute Europe or that of Igbinedion who is busy chasing and romancing Yaradua wherever he goes in the hope to extend his immunity.

Our newly elected politicians should learn that the only way out of this is to work in the interest of the people. Cant you they how the likes of Duke are so proud of themselveshuh??

there is no point calling someone else naive, OBJ and Ehindero thinks certain drug baron killed Ige. Whoever thinks they are not right certainly knows more than them and should come forward with there evidence. It is that simple.

There is no point holding to some unfounded prejudice and saying the outcome of police investigations is wrong except it produces certain results. If you know better as your attempt to call me naive clearly suggest approach the courts. If you are able to prooove your case I will like to see OBJ sent to jail, but what I cant accept is to sit in your comfort zone and accuse the President without proof and expect everyone else to agree.
PoliticsRe: Igbo Igp Reality Or A Joke? by McKren(m): 8:32pm On May 27, 2007
The IG can come from anywhere.

Why all the ethnic and tribal politics and calculations?

I have seen people from the South West that never liked OBJ even though he was the president for 8 years.

Let the best man be given the job.
Afam you have been an advocate of Presidency moving to the North after 8years in the South, in the run-up to last election you always pointed out that Pat Utomi is simply wasting his time. If that is not tribal politics or calculation then what is it?

We can not choose President on tribal calculations and start advocating detribalism that we hardly believe. Yaradua was not more qualified than Donald Duke.

As far as am concerned the only high-class police officer who the cap fits, which I would not even have bothered if he was from the South West (the region that have produced IG in the last 8years) is Ribadu.
If Ribadu becomes IG, fine he got that on performance but telling me all those other guys who will be chosen with old school status quo rules should be chosen without putting geopolitical zone into consideration is funny. As that is simply double standards.

The Hopefuls

Ogbonnaya Onovo, DIG

Born 7 February, 1953, in Enugu, Onovo attended Presbyterian School, Abakaliki; Izzi Boys’ High School, Abakaliki; Mary Knoll College, Ogoja; and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. He holds a degree in Political Science, specialising in International Relations.

He joined the Nigeria Police as a cadet officer in August 1977. He was promoted DIG in March 2002. Onovo has attended various detective courses, junior command course, senior management course as well as the National Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies, NIPSS. Among the positions he has held on his way to the top are the chairmanship of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), DIG, D Investigations Department. He is currently the DIG, Administration Department of the Police.

On account of experience, the 54-year old is best placed to succeed Ehindero. Another factor that could work in his favour is that he is still five years away from his retirement date. He may, however, lose out to geo-political considerations.
That is the NEWS profile on Ogbonna ONOVO.
The question I ask of the bit in bold is, what is that geopolitical consideration all abouthuh?? The outgoing IGP is not from his zone as to say because his zone has produced the IGP in the last 4years.

May be officers from some zones of the country are not Nigerian enough to head to police.
If Ribadu is made IGP I will not be worried because I will assume he would have achieved that on merit but if it becomes someone else not Ribadu, not ONOVO.
Then Ogbonna Onovo will surely ask himself how much Nigerian he is because of the language he speaks.

What I find very funny in this whole drama is how the Senate President will be chosen.

BigB1 has always talked about having a politically aware electorate being paramount to having a free and fair election. The question is what is the hope of seeing a free and fair election in Nigeria when even our lawmakers do not know their voting rights.

Instead of interested candidates to the post of Senate President or Speaker lobbying their fellow house members they prefer to first lobby the outgoing President or President-elect who practically has no vote.
Tomorrow the same sort of people will criticize Iwu for a Sham election.

What is the essence of democracy and sepration of powers if the legislature is an extention of the Presidencyhuh?? party or no party.
PoliticsRe: Eu Parliament Wants Aid To Nigeria Stopped Until Fresh Polls by McKren(m): 5:17pm On May 26, 2007
This is not about teaching you new IMF economics, the point I am trying to drive home here is that there are always unannounced conditions for those aid and loans.

I do not blame my bank for defaulted credit repayments, but it becomes criminal if after defaulted repayments my Bank goes on to futher increase the worth of my credit card because they know a few things about my person and maybe inspite of the fact that I have no means of income they are sure that maybe because my dad is a billionaire they can extort money from me by puting me in debt trap.

What is the point giving an African leader more money when so much revenue generated by the same government is not accounted for. At the end of the day the aid do not better the life of ordinary Africans.

Maybe we forgot that debt cancellation came as an aid package. I don't know if we really undestand the full meaning of what we are saying.
You seem to understand better the full meaning of what we are saying, but hope your understanding also includes the fact that the debt itself came as a result of aid.

aid = (IMF and Wolrd bank's deceptive word for loan). Loans are given because there is a security some sort of guarantee that the money can be reclaimed. The security in this case is the vast resources we have.
The very essence of these aid is to leave us in a disadvantaged position so that they can dictate to us how to use our resources.

There is no need for any conspiracy theory, in three days time OBJ will cease to be President and by so doing will not have any immunity.

Any person who thinks OBJ killed Ige should approach the police or better still charge OBJ to court with your evidence. If they can not do that they should simply remain silent and stop passing a verdict against the President in the court of public opinion (newspaper).

Yes there is a thing like freedom of speech but not on such sensitive issue.
