the opposition are trying to exploit the reluctance of Nigerians. they know that is they call for protest no one will come thus the sit at home tactics.

So that they will lump together those relaxing at home with those sitting at home.

Obj should bit them to their game by declaring monday and tuesday public holidays.

This is blessing in disguise, we need to be self sufficient.
We have enough to do that, EU can keep their aid.

All we need in Nigeria is to use our oil and gas to negotiate for whatever we want.
EU aid to Nigeria is simply impoverishing Nigerians of tomorrow, because what it means is that if the Govt loots both our money + EU aid. They would have succeeded in looting future Nigerians into debt.

sleekdot:
I think the originator of this thread deserves a nobel prize for senselessness.

McKren,
Wole Soyinka replied to OBJ's attack on Bola-Ige What has that got to do with Atiku?

What happened to McKren or is another person using his ID. because Mckren of last year used to be a very reasonable poster that I always look forward to reading his post, the McKren of this year can not even differentiate between Atiku and Bola-Ige what a shame. How come you now join psychophants like Mamajama, wa do moi e.t.c to praise every OBJ action even for killing Ige and coming out to insult a dead man why did he not say those stuffs when Ige was alive he would have heard the beffitting reply he deserve for the Cicero knows how to reply fools. Maybe you should go for a recess to rediscover your old self.

For your info Soyinka did not support Atiku he supported Utomi.
I obviously think there is a misconception of what I am getting at here.
My attack on Wole Soyinka has nothing to do with the death of Ige, but everything to do with the resolution of him and his fellow Nobel Lauretts in far away USA that our elections should be cancelled.
On Soyinka supporting Utomi, that public declaration, which only exists on the pagesof the newspaper, came only when Atiku's chances of taking part in the election was looking blique. If you you followed Soyinka's comments in the past 18months you will know where am coming from.

On the Ige issue:
Go to the thread "Bola Ige killed by drug barons" I have refused to post anything there reason being that as much as I have never denied my love for OBJ you can't obviously exonorate him from the death of Bola Ige. If you do not blame him for masterminding the death of Ige you must blame him for failing to unearth those behind the death of a serving Atorney General of Nigeria. Though I do also think if OBJ actually masterminded the death of Ige then that is such a shame as it will be a school boy act from a General. He should have known that with the then political atmosphere he will be held responsible for whatever happened to Ige.

Politics and leadership is full of intrigues, sometimes lower officers or lower politicians in the rank of leadership tend to errorneously anticipate the desires of the head and execute some unnecessary acts, sometimes even the opposition could attack the enemy of the President to blackmail him, sometimes enemies of the President could be killed by the normal social vices. But trust conspiracy theorist they will always see the political undertones and sometimes the President might even be blackmailing himself more by trying to deny it, in times like this the best option is quiet diplomacy. OBJ should not have commented openly on the death of Bola ige last week since he is the no.1 suspect.
For me I am not going to place any prejudice on the deaths of Ige, Marshal harry, A.K.Dikibo, Rimi's Son when I have no proofs to back them up. I will keep an open mind until investigations are complete and no outcome will suprise me including indictment of OBJ.

If you have been following Soyinka's coments in the past 18months you will know that he has soft spot for Atiku.

@ALL

This is democracy, Soyinka has every right to say what he likes while we also reserve the right to call who he says stupid.
Those who come here calling people OBJ's ass lickers because they tend to support OBJ should first ask themselves if they are Wole Soyinka's asslicker for supporting himhuh??

Abuja may reciprocate the new British visa policy which requires Nigerians living in the United Kingdom to return to Nigeria to renew their travel documents.

Foreign Affairs Minister, Joy Ogwu, said at her valedictory news conference on Wednesday that Nigeria’s bilateral agreements require it to reciprocate any gesture.

She regretted the new British policy and stressed that the contents of Nigeria’s bilateral relations with other countries must be maintained to protect the interest of Nigerians.

"Most of these things that you see manifest are based on the national calculation of nation states. The national interest of every nation state must be served. If we don’t serve our own national interest of Nigeria, then it is our fault. If the British define their national interest as keeping as many Nigerians out of their territory, we have ways, we have means of dealing with it: reciprocity. That is it. I will stop at that so that I don’t step on too many toes. But you can be sure that in our bilateral relations with any country, we will reciprocate. Reciprocity is certain as solution," she stated in Abuja.

Ogwu recalled that on assumption of office nine months ago, she embarked on comprehensive reforms to "re-position, re-invent, renovate, restructure, re-engineer, renovate, and re-tool" the ministry to articulate and implement foreign policy.

The ministry will celebrate its golden jubilee this year and is already setting a new foreign policy agenda that would refocus it on "new themes, priorities, and challenges, such as poverty alleviation and combating pandemics, peace-keeping and peace-building, energy, organised crime, including human trafficking, fair trade, disarmament and human rights."

About 544 officers have been redeployed from there to the office of the head of service who would decide what to do with them.

But President Olusegun Obasanjo has given Ogwu the approval to engage 80 officers whose degree qualification rank first class or second class upper.

The ministry, according to her, is now better placed to promote closer economic and political ties with other countries, in order to achieve Nigeria’s foreign policy goals of rapid economic growth.

She lamented the low funding for the ministry, but stressed that a stakeholders’ forum that would help reshape foreign policy has been instituted.

Also at the briefing, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Hakeem Baba Ahmed, said the ministry has investigated the case of the Defence Attache to the Nigerian High Commission in India, Captain G.A. Ojedokun, who was caught with over $2 million (N260 million) at the Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi.

Ahmed, who recounted that he has been on the matter since the news broke, said there is no evidence from either India or Nigeria that Ojedokun was involved in crime.

His words: "Since that time, detailed explanation has been given about the source of the money, the officer has been released and the Nigerian and Indian authorities have been co-operating ….

"There was a need for some explanation to be given to the Indian authorities and it has been given to them. The officer is no more under detention."

PoliticsRe: Obi Should Not Hand Over To Andy Uba by McKren(op): 3:06pm On May 24, 2007
I am of the view that lenghts of tenure is a constitutional issue and the courts whose responsibility it is to interprete the constitution is simply running away from its duties. I hope the Supreme court does not also run away.

Besides that Obi has every right to maintain status quo until his case is determined by the Supreme Court and no one must bully him to hand over.

PDP admited to have aided Ngige to rig elections (a fact which led to this crisis), the same PDP should be ready to bear the brunt of their misdeeds because Andy Uba is a PDP candidate. In fact his own blood brother, Chris Uba, spearheaded  the rigging.

The funniest question is, if Obi's tenure will be determined by election tribunal which one should it behuh? the 2003 one that has since wound up or this 2007 onehuhhuh??

Election tribunals are set up to determine whether a candidate is validly elected not to determine his lenght of stay in office. If they are suggesting that the tribunal has the right to determine how long an official stays in office not the constitution anymore then OBJ could have as well approached the tribunal to get a third term.

Obi goes to Supreme Court

ODOGWU EMEKA ODOGWU, Awka

ANAMBRA State governor, Mr Peter Obi yesterday headed for the Supreme Court to challenge Appeal Court’s decision, declining jurisdiction to hear the governor’s matter over his tenure.

Since the ruling, a cross section of Nigerians have been reacting to the judgment. Governor Obi, who already asked the people of the state to go about their lawful businesses, vowed to pursue the case to its logical conclusion. Our investigations revealed that his lawyers have already filled a notice of appeal and are warming up at the Supreme Court.

Personal Assistant to the Governor on Media, Valentine Obienyem, confirmed the development to Daily Champion, saying the governor would do all within the law to ensure that his tenure was properly interpreted.

Meanwhile, mixed reactions have been greeting ruling of the Court of Appeal. Commenting, Barrister Emilia Enemuo, a legal practitioner based at Onitsha disagreed with the decision of the Court of Appeal saying: "The Court of Appeal erred in law. It did not answer the prayers of Governor Obi but chose to hide under the cloak of jurisdiction.

Clearly, by virtue of Section 251 of the Constitution, the Federal High Court has powers to handle that matter. It is mysterious that a simple case of constitutional interpretation is now transformed, by some magical formula, into an election matter. The question now is: which tribunal are they talking about? Is it the one that was since wound up or the one already set up that do not have the powers to even hear Obi’s case? If the court says that individual should approach it to set up tribunals when their rights are threatened, then we will soon have millions of tribunals in the country."

Attorney General of Anambra State, E.D. Chukwuma said "the issue His Excellency went to court for determination has not been determined, rather each court is running away from that. I hope we will get to a court that will not run away."

Barrister Keyinde Olagosonye is equally of the opinion that the Court of Appeal erred and by extension "has abdicated its responsibility."

Besides whether the Court of Appeal was legally right or wrong, the people of Anambra are aggrieved because they expected a favourable judgment for Peter Obi over which Christians in the state have been praying and fasting. The mood in the state was that of gloom until Governor Obi told them in a broadcast that the decision of the Court of Appeal was not the final in the issue.

Speaking to our correspondent, Michael Joe Onwudinjo, a businessman based in Awka said, "Mr. Obi is the duly elected Governor of Anambra State who has shown belief in the rule of law. The Constitution says he has four years out of which he has spent one. I do not understand while the simple prayer that his tenure be interpreted is unnecessarily clothed into technicalities, thereby delaying justice. If anything happens to his tenure, we shall hold the Federal High Court and the Court of Appeal responsible. Do they realize that if Obi does not get justice, Anambra State will be sent to hell, especially considering the characters threatening to take over, even without elections?"
Reacting to the ruling, Engr. Anthony Akpulu described it thus: "I am not a lawyer, but the decision is against the emerging trend as expounded by the likes of Justice Alfa Belgore, that technicalities should not be allowed to clog the wheel of justice. If I understood Governor Obi, he is asking for the interpretation of a section of the Constitution and not whether he is validly elected or not."

That is a right which I or no one can take away from you. But trying to incite Nigerians against the President when you are unable to say who else won the elections is simply unacceptable.

People go on about saying the elections had irregularities, no one has been able to come out and say "hand on heart Buhari or Atiku won the elections". No one.

As far as the business of kidnapping for ransome is so easy and lucrative the crisis will not end.

Who wants to quit such easy money with returns in millions of dollars for monthly salaryhuhhuhhuh?

The incoming Govt must first of all give Nigerians a reason to believe them that good days lie ahead probably by first at least sorting out electricity.
Then it should be made a crime for any company to give out ransome to secure hostages, this should be equated to sabotaging National interest and security. yes that is what it is.

When the Govt has proven that they are actually working for the comon good of Nigerians, then anybody sabotaging the economy should be classified and treated as terrorist thus any mean necessary should be used to sort them out including full scale military action. But as long as govt is unable to deliver in human capacity development they lack the moral authority to make this call.

you've run a Government thats full.
you traversed each and evry highway;
And more, much more than this,
you did it your way.

Regrets, you've had a few;
But then again, too few to mention.
you did what you had to do
And saw it through without exemption.

you planned each charted course;
Each careful step along the byway,
But more, much more than this,
you did it your way.

Yes, there were times, I'm sure you knew
When you bit off more than you could chew.
But through it all, when there was doubt,
you ate it up and spit it out.
you faced it all and you stood tall;
And did it your way.

It means doing what you genuinely believe to be right.

Your duty is to act according to your conviction,

Big 1.
Can you make peace with someone who steals your piece of land, builds a house in it and invites you to his house? Your reasons might be that IBB thing did not work out. Good luck.

Injustice goes in a virtual circle. Shagari /Ekwueme rigged polls in 83 elections , military kicked them out of power ,Ekwueme later stood for election during PDP primaries, but was rigged out, Ekwueme called the primary a " charade" Audu Ogbe, then PDP chairman called Ekwueme a bad loser and said his utterances were “treasonable’. Later on Ogbe was kicked out of PDP because he refused to endorse Chris Uba's actions in- another stolen mandate- By the way Chuba Okadigbo, an outspoken critic of those who criticized 1983 elections, later died while leading a march against 2003 election rigging. Atiku Abubakar had been a beneficiary of stolen mandate from 1999 to 2003. Now he wants justice to be done. He had known that what befell likes of Olu Falae, and Ekwueme would befall him, he might have done something about it. If we do nothing about it, the status quo remains. Somebody should learn some lessons by now. This same support was asked of us in 83, 99,03 elections, but politicians never delivered because they did not derive power from the people but though rigging.
Interesting read, but lacks just one thing a credible suggestion with a clear milestone.
What should be done, quash Yar'adua's victory and install a man so unpopular like Buhari who history will never forget to have ousted a democratically elected government in Nigeria or to install a vice president who spent the last eight years dreaming to be President than working to deliver the dividends of democracy to his people, a vice President who criticizes the President for paying off debts and putting money in the Nations reserve while yet in his own office he will store PTDF funds in banks so as to fascilitate loans for his friends but claims he only kept the money to yield profits in banks when the projects the money was meant for has not been deliveredhuhhuh?

Or are you calling for another elections so that up to 200 people will die again in the processhuh?
What does the protest really hope to achieve we like to knowhuhhuh?

Yes it is necessary to have credible elections but I think at this stage in our history, the end result is more important than the process itself for reasons of continuity.

Having a free and fair election is not just about having an Efficient INEC, it also includes having an enlightened electorate. Trust me not even President Clinton can conduct credible elections in Nigeria because the electorate is simply not enlightened enough. So it will actually take time to have the sort of election we dream of. At least by then our boys will no longer be willing to wield cutlass for Akala to intimidate voters instead of seeking their votes.

Hence at this stage we should be more concerned in the result than the process.

Govs, others plot Ribadu’s ouster from govt - Launch media war against him
Idowu Samuel - 20.05.2007

PLANS are afoot to edge out the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, from the corridors of power, Sunday Tribune can report.

According to investigations, a cabal, which comprise notable state governors and some key presidential candidates, has perfected plans to launch anti-Ribadu campaign to make him unsuitable for the incoming cabinet to be formed by the president-elect, Alhaji Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.

The anti-Ribadu mood of the cabal is based on the danger which his continued existence in government pose for government officials, state governors and others whom the EFCC had marked for arrest on charges of corruption.

The EFCC boss had before now been reiterating that none of the government officials investigated for alleged corrupt practices would go scotfree, an indication that the EFCC would effect their arrest at the expiration of their constitutional immunity by May 29, 2007.

The EFCC is said to have already placed some state governors under surveillance to prevent them from escaping abroad at the expiration of their tenures, a move aimed at making them answerable to the charges against them.

Against this background, a pressure group set-up by the cabal has been advising the president-elect and his close confidant not to reckon with Ribadu in the scheme of things ahead of the next cabinet formation.

It is not certain whether Yar’Adua had bowed to pressure to dispense with Ribadu, but Sunday Tribune can report that the cabal is behind media campaigns about Ribadu being named as a possible Inspector General of Police.

The motive of the media campaigns, was to create anti-Ribadu sentiment within the Nigerian police and deliberately pitch the top officials of the police against him.

Sunday Tribune learnt exclusively that the planted media war against Ribadu had started generating ill-feelings within the police circles in view of the loud murmurs by some officials that Ribadu can never be the Inspector General considering his limited qualifications.

To further dent the image of Ribadu before the president-elect, the cabal was said to have recruited ex-police officers and retired Generals to launch heavy campaigns of calumny against him in the media and within the relevant circles.

Meanwhile, a group known as Northern Coalition for Democracy and Justice had hinted that Ribadu may not survive the onslaught against him going by the manner of underground campaign to render him ineffective in the next political dispensation.

The Secretary General of the Group, Mallam Umar Farouk told Sunday Tribune in Abuja that the North was getting accustomed to the impact of the anti-corruption crusade and, hence, would not want the EFCC to be phased out by the next civilian government.

The northern youths, however, admonished the president-elect to be wary of the encroachment of sycophants on his authority, stating that he should use his wisdom to determine whether Ribadu is good for anti-corruption crusade or not.

He said,” since the present civilian government introduced the anti-corruption crusade, we in the North have known the difference because the crusade has encouraged our state governments to be accountable. For this reason, we will do everything possible to encourage the president –elect to retain the crusade.

“Nobody is saying that the president-elect should make Ribadu a minister, but if it pleases him that he should continue to man the EFCC, so be it. Otherwise, let him appoint somebody capable enough to continue the crusade”.
