It has been revealed how the former Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Sunday Ehindero, promoted his sister, Idowu Ehindero, a few days before he was pulled out of the force.

P.M.News gathered that Ehindero promoted his sister who was a superintendent of police to chief superintendent of police on 28 May.

Sources said the former police boss was said to have backdated the promotion even though his sister was not one of those due for promotion.

It was further gathered that Ehindero failed to promote those recommended by the deputy Inspectors-General of Police (DIGs) and even the Minister of State in charge of police, Mr. Broderick Bozimo.

Sources said Bozimo had recommended his police aide, Mr. Kevin K. Zuokumor, a deputy superintendent of police to Ehindero for promotion because of his role in the rescue of some hostages kidnapped by some militants in the Niger Delta.

But Ehindero turned down the minister’s request and promoted his own sister and aide as well as other police officers instead

Let the best man win and GOD only appoint and anoint his people. If you guys recall Abacha did the same thing, The next in line senior police officer was supposed to take over the post of IGP and 24 hours later there was a change in direction. as far as I am concern ONOVO is not fit to be IGP go back and look at his tract record and compare him to OKIRO.
1. I dont think a present Nigerian wants our democratic government to take a cue from the Abacha years. His govt can not be a model for democratic govts to follow.

2. Tell us where ONOVO failed and how Okiro distinguished himself in that regard.

I believe the president appointed someone he believes he can trust to work with.

OBJ appointed Victor Malu as the Chief of Army Staff even when he had a lot of seniors in the army so this is not unusual.

The key word here is appointment.
No one is disputing Yaradua's authority to appoint who he pleases. There is nothing wrong appointing Okiro or even a police commisioner from Katsina or Zamfara if he so pleases.

What I dont understand and you have not helped explain is why Yaradua decided that Ehindero should hand over to second in command and do a summersault within 24hrs. That act is begging for explanation from the Presidency.

Afam someone, somewhere thinks ONOVO an Enugu State man like yourself is not Nigerian enough to be IGP. If you think the summersault by the Presidency does not deserve an explanation then you also share that view.
PoliticsRe: Police Ig: Gani Decries Exclusion Of Igbo by McKren(m): 10:35am On Jun 06, 2007
Afam the question is not whether Yaradua wants his kinsman as IG. Yaradua could have easily appointed Okiro as IG in the first place or even Dudari or Ringim.

But Why did he decide that 2nd in command to Ehindero should take over from him and do a summersault within 24hrshuhhuh?
That is the question begging for answer?
PoliticsRe: Police Ig: Gani Decries Exclusion Of Igbo by McKren(m): 9:48am On Jun 06, 2007
This is not about whether Okiro is Igbo enough.

That Yaradua wants the next in line after Ehindero to take over from him and within 24hours did a summersault and decided to bypass Ogbonna Onovo demands some explanation.

We need to know whether ONOVO is incompetent and why the appointment of IG was handled in that manner.

This is not about trying too hard to be seen as a detribalized Nigerian. As long as such unprovoked injustices continue to stair us in the face the talk of UNITED Nigeria is no where near sight.

Yaradua can as well ignore them and send a delegate to represent Nigeria, is not like they will do something special for us.

Besides that all them Western Nations are treating him coldly so there is no point going to beg for their attention.

I will rather work with an old man that knows his stuff than trust a young man that is not up to speed with what he should know.
Age is not an overiding criteria for deciding who will be more productive even in a typical work environment.

Beyond the brand names and beautiful adverts we see on TV of big organisations are professors and technicians that are closer to 60 years in some cases bringing to the fore experience they gathered over the years.

The statement in bold interests me a lot, I am glad you agree that Nigerians voted for Yar'adua in the last elections, never mind the likes of Buhari and Atiku that cannot manage electoral defeats.
The old men we are talking about have been part and parcel of the failure called Nigeria.

For the records, I never wished for Atiku and Buhari Presidency.
PoliticsRe: Obasanjo Angry With Yaradua Over Kingibe by McKren(m): 1:25pm On Jun 04, 2007
One of the PDP's credible claim to the Yaradua/Goodluck ticket is generational shift.
We thought it was time to break free from the past and give young men a chance, so telling us Yaradua can appoint his forefathers if he so wish is simply not what Nigerians voted for.

It makes nonsense of the whole concept of generational shift, and new ideas.

PoliticsRe: Okiro Now Police Ig by McKren(m): 7:08pm On Jun 02, 2007
@Ijogbon

You see forget your spin, the Presidency had a policy of wanting Ehindero's second in command to take over and chose to bypass him for obvious reasons. That is not fair.

There is no point talking about him not being Igbo enough. Well if you want to play it that way then let me inform you if you go to Mike Okiro's village Ndoni or Ikwere in Rivers State and call them Igbos you may not come back alive.

That is a fallout of the blackmail and cold war, the IBBs, Gusaus and Danjumas have over the years ochestrated against the Igbos in the South East.

Trust me this is just a continuation of that cold war and I have a feeling that those who prevented Ekwueme from being President in 1999 because the Igbo man must never be trusted and chose to install OBJ who as it were then was in Prison could still be those behind this move.

When will the Spin masters go to rest so that we can truly be one people.

Just look at it this way, amongst the heir to the post of IGP, ONOVO was most qualified, had 5years left in his service, higher than Okiro on the police strata and yet younger than him in age. What is there reason for edging him out when the Presidency had already announced that second in command should take overhuhhuh

Ogbonna ONOVO should resign, hold his head up high and wish Mike Okiro goodluck.
He should be proud of himself for serving Nigeria, he should also be proud that he did not loose out as a result of incompetence but his geopolitical zone.
He should also have no regrets that he is from Enugu state but then he should hope and pray for a Nigeria where those from his State and Geopolitical zone are Nigerian enough to be named IGP.

Drama, as Okiro is named new Police IG
By Kingsley Omonobi
Posted to the Web: Saturday, June 02, 2007

ABUJA — PRESIDENT  Umar Musa Yar’Adua, yesterday, appointed Mr. Mike Okiro as 13th Inspector-General of Police. Until his appointment, the new IGP  was the Deputy Inspector-General in charge of Works.

The appointment of Okiro was confirmed via a statement signed by Musa Aduwak, Senior Special Assistant, Media to the President. Okiro’s selection as IGP  followed a day of drama regarding the refusal of his predecessor, Mr. Sunday Ehindero to hand over to his former number two, DIG Ogbonna Onovo on the  grounds that he (Ehindero) was not authorized to do so.

Things dramatically changed when Ehindero was later called from the presidency and directed to go and hand over the instruments of office to Onovo because there  cannot be a vacuum in the Police chain of command. But no sooner had Onovo received the instruments of office from Ehindero as acting IG that the President was  said to have made his decision based on advice of his security chiefs and kitchen cabinet.

Saturday Vanguard gathered that the high-wire lobbying and pressure mounted on President Yar’Adua to announce a Police boss from the North since former  President Olusegun Obasanjo appointed the IGP that worked with him from the South-West, tilted the appointment in favour of Okiro.
Onovo was said to have lost out in the last minute when powerful forces were said to have argued that giving such a sensitive position of the number one security  organization to an Igbo man, could be dangerous.

The new IG who hails from Rivers state, is an alumnus of the Nigerian Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies and was at one time, Lagos State Police  Commissioner and DIG Operations before he was made DIG Works, the number three position in the force.

The man, Mike Mbama Okiro

Afam you are in the habit of suggesting that those of us who think 40years after the civil war Nigeria should be truly one are ethnic bigots. How best do you explain that drama other than Ogbonna Onovo is not Nigerian enough to be IG.
May be Air Vice Marshal Paul Dike from Delta State, if he was from any of the South East States he wont be Chief of Air Staff.

Yaradua had every right to appoint even a Katsina born police commisioner as IG. But to decide that Ehindero should hand over to the most senior police officer and then do a summersault when they realize his geopolitical zone (the SouthEast) leaves so many unanswered question. This is just the double standards I talk about.

I will say it now and again without any regrets, even if I will be labelled tribalist:
1. This act will send a wrong message to all the Igbos in the Military that they are Nigerian enough to die for their country but not Nigerian enough to lead any of the security apparatus.

2. I have always said that 40years after the war may be those of them in MASSOB are yet to find a reason to regret the war. Nigerian Government has given them another reason not to regret what Ojukwu and his men did.

Those who call themselves Security Chiefs in this country should be ashamed of themselves. They want to secure our liveshuhhuh they should come up with a solution to the Niger-Delta problem, crime rate is increasing they are not doing anything about it.
All they know how to do is to slice and dice us, tribes who can work in their department and those who can't.

Well if they think 40years after the War, (at a time when the idea of Biafra is not even popular amongst the Igbos) their greatest threat to National Security are the Igbos. Then I wish them goodluck.

@BigB1

I have heard you, but those are just your oppinion.
The Yar'adua govt you are talking about is only 3days old. They don't have a policy yet, they are even yet to set up a Govt. as ministers and members of cabinet are yet to be named.

Just cool down, though I do understand he is romancing the IBBs. Heard General Salihu is being groomed by Gen Abdulahi mohamed to take over mid-way. Lets just keep our fingers crossed.
No need to celebrate too early.

However if I had access to Yaradua I will have only one advice for him, borrowing Tony Blair's statement,
"Leadership is not about following conventional wisdom or being guided by the snapshot of latest public opiinnion, it is about acting out of conviction for what is right". Blair went on to defend this argument by suggesting that the problem with listening to public opinion is that the public don't always agree.

Yaradua talks about being a listening President, which is a good thing. But I hope he does not get so enmeshed in public opinnion and political correctness and forget to do what is right for our country. It is better to fight corruption and become unpopular than to remain popular and not fight it.
