The OP and his cohorts are being disingenuous here: so just because WHO had been electing doctors as her DGs to date, would it mean that this example by this one single organisation should be copied worldwide in the appointment of heads of the health sectors?

It is also worthy to note (according to the article i.e. if you read carefully) that these DGs were in fact elected and therefore popular choices of the combined UN countries as opposed to appointed therefore impositions - which in the Nigerian context include: minister of health, CMDs, ES or DGs of Hosp mgt boards, and even commissioners (at state level) - all being coveted as exclusive by doctors for themselves.

The mistake which doctors make in such arguments and in their stale over-used rhetoric is to confuse the skill required to manage a patient (which is essentially medical) and the skills required to run an organisation such as a hospital, ministry, parastatal etc.; which are purely administrative and therefore quite different.

To suggest that you must qualify as doctor in order to head a hospital or be the minister of health is a fallacy and quite disingenuous to say the least; because being a doctor does not guarantee anybody being a good administrator - this is the position of the much dreaded JOHESU.

Prior to the Babangida/ Olukoye Ransome Kuti era, hospitals used to be managed by a neutral set of professionals known as Hospital Administrators, everything then was ok until when these ppl were replaced by doctors as CMDs that was when the whole trouble began.

JOHESU are therefore saying, you do not need a doctor's skill to head/run a hospital but hospital experience and sound administrative skills.
Therefore either revert back to the situation ante, of Hospital Administrators or open the headship to all suitably qualified health workers as well as substituting the title CMD for CEO (or similar), so that doctors would not mistakenly confuse such appointee as performing the function of a physician.

In a house of 10, when only 1 is against the rest then something fishy must be going on, because all other 9 cannot be wrong.
Doctors greed and selfishness against other health workers is the cause of this wahala.
Imagine going on strike because:
you don't want others to graduate as consultants - even though anyone can become consultant in his own field
you don't others to be promoted to directors - even though the law entitles them to it
you don't want others to skip GL 11 - even though the law entitles them to it like other civil servants.
you want house officers & resident doctors to be paid teaching allowances - even though they are students & not teaching anybody.
You want to be given the highest Hazard allowance - even though there are others more exposed to hazards than you.
you want to take over control importation of laboratory reagents & equipment - even though there is the laboratory regulatory body (MLSCN) as provided by law
you want to head departments or organisations of other health professionals - e.g. NAFDAC even though they are not meant for you.
you do not want other professionals to head hospitals or become minister for health - even though these positions are essentially and purely administrative/political.

And the list goes on.....haba doctors, na una only be ppl?

First of all, the office of the CMD is a political/administrative anomaly and a misnomer for a Hospital Administrator.

Please take a cue from the state or federal government scheme of service and show me where from the entry point to the terminal point is the position of CMD reflected in the career progression of medical doctors.
Please also tell me what is the academic qualification or criteria needed by an individual to be able to administrate a hospital that only doctors possess and not other health workers ?
Where in doctors curriculum is hospital administration included that gives them superior administrative skills over and above others?
How many of the so called CMDs have formal administrative training and qualifications?

Substituting the title CMD for Hospital Administrators is the real problem causing doctors to feel as if the position is their birthright at the exclusion of others.
If doctors without administrative skills are allowed to run hospitals then why can't others with similar experience?
What is so special about running a hospital since after all (as you put it) a secondary school graduate with SSCE can run for president and lead the whole country - for goodness sake.

I am confident that JOHESU members wouldn't have been calling for the position to be opened to others if doctors had not been abusing the office of the CMDs (like that of the minister for health) as a convenient tool for oppressing and suppressing the growth and development of other health workers - who they look down upon and treat with contempt.

The solution to this issue is simply to revert back to neutral professionally trained and qualified hospital administrators or open the position to any suitably qualified health worker, as well as also ditching the title CMD for CEOs so that doctors won't fool themselves into believing that such office holder is performing the function of a certified physician.
Doctors can have their CMDs as heads of their departments e.g. O&G, Medicine, Surgery, Paediatrics, etc.

Secondly, on the issue of consultant; check up the meaning of consultant and show me where it says only doctors can be consultants.

The truth is, anybody can and should be free to become a consultant if he/she attains the requisite qualification for his chosen career - you can even have consultant shoe shiner, cleaner, bus conductor if need be - whats so wrong with that?

FYI, JOHESU members are not vying to be medical consultants but Nurse Consultant, Pharmacy Consultant, Consultant Radiographer, Consultant Laboratory Scientist, etc. - in fact, consultants in their own field as may be defined and determined by their own professional regulatory bodies, as accordingly empowered by law to set standards for training and practice in such professions - doctors should therefore have no say in this matter - until someone encroaches into their field or assumes their identity.

Oh oh! this news completely exonerates northern leaders like : Buhari, Sanusi, El Rufai & Co who have suffered endless campaign of calumny trying to link them with Boko Haram.

The position of doctors in this regard is so absurd that its unthinkable.

The MLSCN is the regulatory body backed up by law (Act 11 of 2003 of the Fed Rep of Nigeria) to regulate Medical Laboratory Science practice in all its ramifications in the country, among them setting up standards and determining the quality of manufactured and imported IVDs - covering reagents, chemicals and equipment which Medical Laboratory Scientists use to carry out laboratory tests etc.

Doctors on the other hand are saying no, med lab scientists should not be allowed to exercise this legitimate right as given to them by law but they (doctors) on the other hand should be the ones to exercise it - can you imagine that!

You do not need to be a rocket scientist to be able to ask and answer this question of who should regulate IVDs: med lab scientists who use them daily as tools of their profession or doctors who hardly ever engage them ?

It is clear to me that doctors are still smarting from the pain of recent court judgement which freed scientists from the domination of their colleagues (pathologists) by declaring the two professions as distinct and different and therefore entitling lab scientists to have and head their own departments as well as be promoted up the to rank of directors - another reason why the doctors are now on strike.
They just want to block the progress and development of any other profession except their own in the health sector, in this case of med lab scientists, out of sheer greed and selfishness - their case is not only appalling it is also pathetic.
