Accordingly, Yerima's alleged bride at 13 is even over aged for the Vatican.

Considering the venom in majority of the posts against this man Yarima, and also the multiciplity of the threads started against him, on the same subject of his alleged marriage to a 13 year old.

It is therefore not difficult to imagine that the country would soon not be a welcomed place for him to live.
So if I were him, I would take my young bride and settle in Spain where the age of sexual consent is still 13 i.e the same as that of the alleged bride; or better still seek asylum at the Vatican where it is just only 12 years.

Afterall, child sex abuse is common among catholic priests and the Pope is reknown for covering up for them - just as I would imagine he would cover up for Yarima, should he (Yarima) take my advice and seek asylum at the Vatican. cool

The Fulani in Jos have little interest in who is the Governor or who builit which house or what, rather their interest lies in the right of passage and grazing lands. The Hausa and Berom have interest in the economy and the politics. Hence the leadership of both the Berom and Hausa are responsible for the current crises. It is not about being Christain and being Muslim, it is about the Hausa, who are happened to be Muslims and against the Berom, who happened to be Christains.

Yes, the constitution made specific pronouncements on the customary aspect of sharia law - no doubt about that. You may also wish note that sharia courts presiding over such cases, mentioned by you, have been in existence long before the present constitution - I suspect even before independence, because I can recall my grandfather being one of such judges in Kaduna in the 1960's - its nothing new or limiting.

The above provision does not in anyway limit or prohibit any state in the federation (as you are wrongly assuming) from further making additional laws concerning sharia or otherwise as it deems fit; providing that such law does not contradict the constitution, and when/if it does, the constitution supercedes.

I repeat there is nothing illegal about the introduction of sharia by some states (otherwise the whole thing would have been legally stopped by now through court action), though you are free as a citizen or through any organisation such as CAN to try it - feel free.

As for hisbah (sharia police) yes it is true, and in this case, the federal government is rightly challenging it in court even though the matter is yet to be resolved; therefore the hisbah are still operating albeit under very low profile.

On the the issue of sale and consumption of alcohol, again you will have to appreciate the entitlement of any state to pass its own laws. In the case of Kano, it chose to ban alcohol (mind you, it didnt do it under sharia law but through state edict - there is a difference), not surprising that it had been finding it difficult to implement completely - much to the chagrin and delight of those for and against the ban respectively.

Bottom line, states in Nigeria like those in America have a right to make laws and these can vary from one state to another. For example, not so long ago (in the 30's) there was a ban on alcohol in nearly all America untill it was repealed some years later. Similarly, some states have different penalties for drug and alcohol related offences, right up to death penalty.

In Nigeria some states have adopted sharia while some have not; nobody is imposing it on your head so I dont understand your beef.
Sharia is only for muslims or are you suggesting that muslims in Nigeria shouldn't have a right to be judged according to their belief - simply because you dont like it?

First of all, no state has adopted any religion, Islam, christianity or otherwise, as its official relgion - not even the sharia states that you mentioned, because it would have been unconstitutional given that Nigeria is secular.

However, adotion of sharia and its implementation on muslims by any of the states that wish to do so is quite legal, legitimate and constitutional

The constitution permits every state to enact local laws for use within the that state as it deems fit( including sharia) as long as such law does not conflict with the constitution.

In the case of sharia , it is deemed part and parcel of the Islamic religion for muslims. I am sure you will not argue at this jucnture that the constitution (see bill of rights) guarantees every citizen the right and freedom to practice his/her religion - muslims included.

Therefore, the federal government has nothing to challenge as far as sharia is concerned, only ignorant and misinformed people like yourself think otherwise - though you are free to dislike it.

By the way, this is not a blind endorsement by me that sharia is a perfect law free of shortcomings or that it will not be subject to abuse and misapplication in the wrong hands.

While citing bad conditions in order countries, she said: "I am pleased to note that several steps have already been taken to limit moral hazard, including dismissal of the CEOs of the banks receiving liquidity support; publication of lists of all major non-performing borrowers; and pursuit of responsible bank managers and borrowers by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC)".

If the above is not an endorsement of Sanusi's reform action, perhaps somebody should tell us what is.

Exerpts of the interview from the link provided in this thread did NOT show that the Ikemba endorsed IBB. Rather, it clearly showed the Ikemba stating the obvious i.e. IBB like any other nigerian citizen has a right to contest in so far as the constitution allows it and people are ready to vote for him, period.
I am no IBB supporter, however, I believe people have rights and that we should respect them.

As for the newspaper it also has a right to endorse whoever it wants. Besides, I wouldnt think Awo would have any issues with IBB as they were not contemporaries.

@ poster, if you dont like IBB, dont vote for him or if you dont like the newspaper, boycut it as you had indicated - or better still, buy your own so that you can reshape political mindsets according to your own agenda.

Your reference to the ongoing debate in Yemen over the age limit for marriage, and the that there are such limits in some muslim countries such as Egypt, shows that there also many muslims who oppose the practice - even if the religion permits it.

Speaking about child sex abuse through religion, particularly against Islam by christians on this forum as if it is only exclusive within muslims; may I remind them about the recent revealation of widespread child sex abuse by the catholic church in Northern Ireland and America, which many catholic priests were involved, for which the pope had to make public apology for their evil acts and for the pope himself was not exenorated from blame for his role in the cover up. The victims were majority young boys but also girls - its covered all over the international media, cnn, bbc, sky news, just name it- its all there for any doubter.

She can marry anybody she wants if she is really determined to so, because nobody can actually stop her.
However, in Islam, muslim women are not permitted to marry outside their faith; though muslim men can.
Even in the case of muslim men, they are only permitted to marry from the people of the book (i.e. christians, jews ect, who have books of faith e.g. bible and so on), and even moreso they are further restricted to only such women that can be deemed morally chaste - not any kind of woman.
Right now, you have three basic options:
# be very selfish, damn the consequences, go ahead and marry her against her religion
# part ways and find a more suitable girl to marry
# make the huge sacrifice of converting to Islam in order to marry her more legitimately

Please get it right, the more recent Jos crisis was and is not about religion but a fight between two ethnic goups, berom against hausa-fulani, about control of land and politics in that area.
The beroms consider themselves the rightful indigenes of Jos (Plateau State) that should have exclusive rights to land, citizenship and politics over and above the hausa-fulani, who they deemed as settlers (or foreigners because of their relelatively recent historical arrival to the state) and should therefore not be entitled to any of these rights at all.
On the other hand the hausa settlers, with roots of many generations in the area, also consider themselves indigenes with full and equal rights as guaranteed by the constitution. This refusal of the hausas (and fulanis, who as nomads respect no boundaries or territories anyway) to step back behind the beroms and accept the role of 2nd class citizens is at the heart of the ongoing crisis.
However deeper and other hidden agenda from within and outside the state along the lines of religion and ethnicity are being used to fuel the violence by their sponsors.
Until the perpetrators of these heinous acts and their sponsors are brought to book, the violence will continue at the risk spreading beyond the confines of Jos environs to consume all of us – if care is not taken.
Unfortunately, careless and unguarded utterances such as the one above are unhelpful and quite unwarranted.
Some people hide behind the safety and obscurity of cyber net to spew so much hate and rubbish capable of inciting even the otherwise passive moderates on both sides into action. So sad.

We all suffer from the issues of Unemployment, lack of security, high illiteracy, bad infrastructure, lawlessness and so on, these are the issues we should concentrate on, instead of dwelling on ethnicity, religion or the evils of the civil war. We are not exactly united on these issues but we are all united on the issue of wanting a better place we can all call home. The challenge is uniting all the oppressed people of Nigeria to fight those that are bent on keeping us down.

Your Obama example says it all, if his campaign was based on black suffering instead of the problems facing all Americans we all know he would never have won the American election. About time we start talking about the problem facing all Nigerians.

By the way, a northern christian , Gen. Yakubu Gowon (from Angas tribe) ruled Nigeria - though not under demoratic setting - and still respected in the north.

How does that change the reality on the ground, that the middle belt is and is still seen as part of the north - lest if you can physically uproot it from its current location above the Niger - whether you or all its people wish not to identify with it or not; the fact still remains that:
A Yoruba woman had been elected as senator in Adamawa state in northern Nigeria and that such a feat or its equivalent has so far not been repeated elsewhere in the country. Period.

How come the motivation of these criminals suddenly changed from desire to make quick money to beings victims of religious riots?
Talk about shifting the goal post - if you get what I mean.

In any case, should such criminalty along with its attendant consequences upon the community be condoned? Is it ok to poison innocent people with drugs?

Are you by any chance suggesting that the senate seat for Adamawa south is at the exclusive preserve of the bachama christians - as if it is a sort of heritage and not an elected office - how silly can you get.
You must be high on burkutu (local brew) again, didn't teacher tell you that it is not good for the brain cells?
As for the middle belt not being part of north, well try google northern Nigeria and note its composite make up. You may also wish to tell your governors to stop attending meetings/ activities of northern states since they are not part of the north; better still, ask southerners if they regard you or the so called middle belt as not part of the north, or whether they would care to distinguish you (christian or not) from hausa/fulani when taking reprisal attacks against these latter people.

By the way, during the June 12 elections of 1993, Kano people voted for a Yoruba man, MKO Abiola( against their own son, Bashir Tofa) as well as the entire northern states, not to a mere senatorial seat but for the presidency of Nigerian i.e. the most coveted seat and currently the excuse for on going agitations.

It would do you good to read your history again, Mr. educated man, perhaps it might cure you from the affliction of selective memory - quite commonly associated with ethno religious motivated hatred - that has become evident in you.

Poverty, illiteracy, and begging are not the issue of this discussion, however, FYI neither is any of them a crime; but dealing in illicit drugs is - surely isn't that the issue at hand - apparently all that schooling cannot even serve you well enough to be able to stick to a simple topic.

Assuming what you said was true, then why is she still in office, why are the people not kicking for her removal - if they didnt love her; they certainly dont hate her either.

However, the question that begs to be answered:is where has the equivalent or anything close to the above ever happened in Yoruba, ibo land or anywhere else in Nigeria; other than the present example, in the north.

As for the Obasanjo factor; another question: who put him there?
