odilibe: But why was your previous lnb(s) wasn't struck by lightening..just immediately you install the avenger lnb it got struck by lightening.... huh

or may the lnb couldn't take in power supply from the receiver and died.. grin grin
Ok, for your info I just moved to Warri and was using Strong LNB before the arrival of the Avenger LNB. There was no lightening and thunderstorms but of recent Lightening and thunderstorms had been more frequent in Warri, that is, from mid October. Strong winds had also damaged my H-H motor although it's still working but not perfectly. Stayed in PH and Yenagoa, lightening and thunderstorms normally occur between March and May, onset of the rainy season.

@George,

It's like the Waffi lightening had struck my Avenger LNB. angry I will do a comprehensive test today after work to confirm. The TV and STB are not affected as I always unplug them from the mains and disconnect the RF Cable daily as a precaution. Lightening in Warri is something else.

Thanks to all those who took time out to do the tests for everybody's benefit. This is a great eye opener. Although most have known that some LNBs are designed for prime focus and others for offset. We have been using offset LNBs for prime focus dishes due to availability and limitation in getting the prime focus LNBs from outside Nigeria.
Once more thank you to Odilibe, George_D, Ikiriye, Obnelly, Adex70 and everybody on the FTA thread both active and inactive for their support.

Ikiriye: @ adex70
my last experiment will be invacom vs inverto all quad with c120 flange cos the invacom is far costlier than inverto so there might be a reason.cheers
I have one Invacom you can borrow for the test.

Ikiriye, please how much is the Samson LNB and where can I get it in PHC?
Satellite TV TechnologyRe: Free To Air Satellite Tv General Thread by microgiant: 9:12am On Sep 25, 2012
obnelly: welldone Ikiriye and Sammu.Among the four or six lnbs i think samson is the best in signal performance.None of the european and american lnbs were able to withstand samson.Based on your research result I still vote samson ,next is echosat.
Also the decibel 0.1,0.2 and 0.3 doesnt count in signal performances,on a good day 0.1db suppose to do the magic but 0.3db carried the day,so rating lnb based on db is not the way forward for fringe receptions.

long throat or short throat lnb isnt the solution most lnb are designed base on the f/d of the dish ,so different lnb is meant for different f/d for better signal performance.

Also ,we do incur some errors during dish installation and satellite tracking with most dish lnbs, even if you have the right lnb with the right f/d for the dish you may under illuminate or over illuminate the signal converged at the focal point their by making your lnb to over perform or under perform. Also we do fail to perfectly aligned dishes to satellites. since we dont have right spectrum analyser /equipment we cant tell if we are on the arc where the satellite is,without all these in place we cant tell how good or bad an lnb performances is.

once again thumb up for you guys.
Obnelly, you are 100 percent correct. Till date i haven't been able to perfectly align my Invercom LNB on my 1.8mtrs prime focus dish.

Secondly the spitfire, avenger and inverto black ultra are primarily designed for offset dishes. They may not perform efficiently on a prime focus dish compared to an offset dish. The East African FTA hobbyist who have been singing the praises of the inverto ultra black lnb are using more offset dishes than prime focus dishes. We are hope to read of better test results from Lagos on offset dishes.

Please accept my sincere apology for not having the installation process pictures. This is due to my camera being damaged by rain water.

I purchaed this SuperPower Jack H-H Motor from the China Site that ends with express (I always get banned whenever i type the full address) and received it on 27th December 2012.

Unfortunately, installing the H-H Motor became a herculean task, because I had misplace my compass and couldn't find it. In the end, I had to use crude methods to do the installation.

I used Google Maps to get my installation site longitude and latitude.

Installation Steps:

1. The dish stand was installed and vertically plumb. The dish stand was installed facing south east instead of south, since I'm not too good in using the sun to get direction. That's not too important.

2. I moved the motor to 0 degree using my digital satellite finder.

3. Assembled the Motor and Dish

4. Installed teh motor on the already fixed dish stand and set the latitude to 5.5 degrees (there are two options to install the dish, either using latitude or elevation. Latitude is the recommended option)the latitude setting on this motor is from 0~90deg, so it is good for our low latitude. The motor also has a triangular indicator to enable you set the latitude/elevation accurately.

5. Next I installed the dish on the motor, ensuring the LNB arm and motor are in straight line.

6. Then I moved the motor to 5 degrees East using the buttons on the motor (East, West buttons), best satellite to use is Rascom QAF 1R, TP 10871 SR 16930 hosting the Libyan Mux, it is the southern most satellite. Actually I used Astra 4A (Sirius4) 12605V29950 to do the tracking.

7. I loosened the motor brackets to move the motor on the stand and dish elevation nut to enable me move the dish up and down while tracking. ( you have to move the whole setup, motor and dish together).

8. After I got Astra 4A signal, I then used the buttons on the motor to move the dish to 28.2 degrees East for Astra 2B, didn't hit green, had to adjust the elevation of dish and rotate the entire setup (motor and dish) a bit, got green then I used the satellite finder to move the motor back to Astra 4A did some adjustment to increase the signal strength and back again to Astra 2B to confirm I can still receive the signal.

9. I scanned for channels on Astra 4A and got all the channels then moved to W3A @ 7E, W3C @ 16E, Astra 2B @ 28.2E, W4/W7 @ 36E, Intel7/10 @ 68.5E, moved back to Astra 4A while moving the dish to 7W I noticed a jump in signal strength and quality, scanned the position and got Rascom QAF 1R @ 2.8E, moved to 7W got the NWA Beam, lastly to NSS7 @ 22W.

Initially I just moved and scanned satellites without saving positions. Later I saved all positions and now all I do is just change channel on the satellite finder and the motor automatically moves to the satellite position for that channel.

To search for satellite all I do is just input the parameters in the Satellite Finder and move the motor in the direction of the satellite, if the signal turns green the motor stops automatically. This position may not be where you have the highest signal quality, so you have to move the motor in steps to increase the signal.

The satellite finder is DVB-S, so it cannot decode DVB-S2 signals. All DVB-S2/MPEG-4 channels appear under radio. My HD Satellite Decoder was also damaged by the rainwater. So, for now I'm using the satellite finder until I receive my new decoder with the Avenger LNB and Bracket/Feed Horn for C-Band on a Small Dish experiment. ETA 10-October 2012.

This motor though a Chinese product, surprisingly is manufactured with good quality materials. The galvanized brackets, bolts and nuts are better than the dish material, I cant attest for the internal circuitry.

George_D: @microgiant,

We could have teamed up together for the triple LNB project if you had indicated interest early enough rather than going solo. All the same, the more the merrier.
Viva FTA!
George_D, if you check past posts, I indicated interest earlier and was waiting for instructions on how to pay. Unfortunately, the next time I logged on the project was already underway. So I had to go solo.
Satellite TV TechnologyRe: Free To Air Satellite Tv General Thread by microgiant: 4:58pm On Sep 12, 2012
I placed order for the Avenger PLL321S-2 and spitfire lnbs, but the spitfire is out of stock. So, I'm expecting the Avenger late October 2012.

@George, I have tracked 10 Sats with the H-H motor, from 22w - 68.5E using my satellite finder. Unfortunately, my decoder had been damaged by the water. The quality of pictures I took with a nokia phone camera are too poor. I am trying to borrow a digital camera to enable me post better quality pictures.

Satellite TV TechnologyRe: Dstv Gotv Promo!!! by microgiant: 5:44pm On Aug 23, 2012
Hayolad: What is special about this GOTV? Channels are limited and tapped from Dstv, what about if DSTV one day decides to say No, on what stand would GOTV place its subscribers? I think they should have been out independently, come out with new and fantastic channels like StarTimes even if they can't be as good as DSTV. I also think the "List Price" is quite too expensive, N9,500, When I can get StarTimes for 3,900 with even more and better channels. I don't trust this guys.
GOTv is the DSTV brand of StarTimes. It is designed to compete with StarTimes.

I got the H-H motor PowerSuperJack which is a good chinco copy of the one posted by the great enigma.
Enigma: Still on the case of Diseqc/USALS motors for low latitudes, I have found one that can do as low as 0 latitude:

http://www.sg6000-motor.com/

I think this is instructive for the satellite kit sellers in particular --- that if they will be importing motors into Nigeria, they need to import those that can do low latitudes.

ETA Instead of making new posts, I will just add any more that I find to this post; so

http://www.wsidigital.com/sg9120-tube.gif
Misplaced my compass been searching for the past 4 months, so eventually had to do the installation by instinct.
first; set motor to my latitude 5 degrees
next, moved motor through sat-finder to 5 degrees for sirius 4. Searched for Sirius, then Astra2b moved to 36E got W4/7.
moved back to 7degrees for W3A, then 16degress for W3C, finally moved to 68.5E for Intel7/10.

The exchange rate was N1 = 1Pound = $2.
Level 01 worker earned N128 which was equal to $256
Then came IBB and IMF insisted on devaluing our currency.
The naira was devalued to N10 to $1
Salary was increased to N350, workers danced over the increment but later discovered they have been short changed.
350 was exchanging for $35 in import dependent economy, that is when real poverty started.

May be naija wasn’t so good o as at then
We only thought it was good because we were still children and all we needed was provided for us just like the way we provide for our kids now and they may not know if things are difficult.
But now we’ve all grown and now cater for our immediate family responsibilities and now feel naija is very very bad. Though u cant still compare now to before according to our parents

may God help us
It was definitely better before SAP, trust me. cry cry
