The police have early Monday sealed off the office of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, who was suspended by President Muhammadu Buhari, last Friday, sources at the Supreme Court have informed The PUNCH.

In a move that appeared to stop any possibility of Onnoghen to accessing the office, policemen were said to have sealed the office and ejected all administrative staff in the axis of the CJN office as early as 7am on Monday.

One of the sources said, “The police have sealed the office of the CJN. Officers and men of the Force went to the administrative staff offices at about 7am and ordered clerical and other staff who were already at their desks to leave a
fter which they locked up everywhere.”

This came as the National Judicial Council has fixed Tuesday for an emergency meeting to deliberate on the sudden suspension of Onnoghen and swearing in of Justice Tanko Muhammad as the Acting CJN by President Buhari.

The Federal Government has warned against foreign interference into the nation’s affairs, capable of creating apprehension, distrust among citizens or undermining the transparency and acceptability of outcomes of the nation’s electoral process.

Malam Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, gave the warning in a statement in Abuja on Saturday.

The presidential aide was apparently reacting to statements issued by some foreign countries including the United Kingdom (UK), United States of America (U.S.A.) and the European Union, over the suspension of Justice Walter Onnoghen by President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday.

President Buhari also swore-in the acting Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Ibrahim Tanko, to replace Onnoghen, pending final determination of the cases against him.

However, Shehu stated that the federal government condemned “any interference or perception management that promotes apprehension,citizens distrust or undermines the transparency and acceptability of the outcomes of our electoral process.

“Nigeria reserves the right to be insulated from suggestions and or interference with respect to wholly internal affairs and commends international laws,customs and norms that mandate and require nations and the comity to respect this prerogative to all.

“Nigeria is confident of its electoral processes and her preparation for the imminent elections and the federal government has supported the independent electoral umpire in both its independence and resources needed to accomplish our desire and insistence on free and fair elections’’.

According to him, the federal government welcomes the prevailing keen interest and partnerships for successful elections and a peaceful Nigeria.

He added that the government had ensured the independence of all organs, institutions and arms of government to “perform their functions in a manner that is transparent, and not lacking in integrity whether institutionally or by persons within such institutions or organs.’’

He pledged that the government would continue to do this.

He said: “Although the question of foreign interference, whether state sponsored, promoted or otherwise has dominated recent elections and outcomes globally, the federal government assures citizens and the global community that it will fiercely and assiduously promote the will and the right of Nigerians to choose and elect their leaders without pressure or assistance from persons or entities that are not constitutionally empowered to participate in the process.’’

The presidential media aide enjoined the citizens to confidently exercise their franchise in an orderly manner with the assurance of the federal government to their security during and after the electoral process.

He reiterated the readiness of the nation’s security forces to confront any plan or attempt to interfere with or disrupt the process whether by elements within or from outside the country.

Let me tell you guys a true story.

Last year, during the Ipob protests in Aba, the protesters at Ariaria attempted burning down the police station opposite the Ariaria market. The policemen called for reinforcements and a Mopol team was sent to the station.

That Mopol team was headed by an Igbo man and when he got there, instead of him to ask his men to quell the situation, he started making calls and delaying. His men were getting impatient but he asked them to stand down and kept making calls to different people, speaking Igbo language.

Eventually, he pulled his men out and that station was burnt with a policeman killed. In fact, when the Ipob protesters killed the policeman, they were rejoicing until it was revealed later on that the late policeman was from Imo state and also igbo. That's when they became sober. If he wasn't Igbo, they wouldn't have cared. The death of the policeman was here on Nairaland and many Igbos supporting Ipob were applauding it here on Nairaland.

The truth is that for most Igbos, primordial sentiments overcome logic and in political decisions, you can't joke with the loyalty of your security chiefs. Election is coming and you want an Igbo IGP? These guys think Buhari is daft.

I beg to disagree with your submission. I am from the North but I wish to state clearly that Mr Buhari is wrong. If you can give the example of Dora Akunyuli it then implies that Igbos have thousands of her types that PMB deliberately ignored to achieve his personal objectives.

President Muhammadu Buhari, Sunday night replied former President Olusegun Obasanjo for attacking him and his government.

In a lengthy statement on Sunday, Obasanjo attacked President Buhari and the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration comparing it to that of the Abacha era.

Presidential spokesman, Garba Shehu, in a statement said: “The sixteen-page letter the former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, wrote to President Muhammadu Buhari and released this afternoon is the last push by desperate politicians who can’t handle the President politically and have resorted to subterfuge.

“Our first message to the former President is that he needs a good doctor for good treatment and to say to him, “Get well soon.”

“As repeatedly said of him, since Chief Obasanjo left office in 1979, he never let every succeeding leader of the country function freely, and this included the one he personally handpicked against all known rules drawn up by the party that put him in the office of the President. But Chief Obasanjo is jealous because President Buhari has more esteem than him and the sooner he learns to respect him the better.

“It is a notorious fact that in dealing with any leader that he failed to control, he resorted to these puerile attacks. As the grand patron, more correctly the grandfather of corruption as described by the National Assembly, Chief Obasanjo released today’s letter purely for the reason of rescuing his thriving corruption establishment.

“The elections starting in February will be free and fair as promised the nation and the international community by President Buhari.

“What Chief Obasanjo and his co-travelers in the PDP should expect is that from the outcome, we will teach them a political lesson that they will never forget. This margin will be much bigger than we had in 2015.

“Claims that President Buhari and the All Progressives Congress (APC) have embarked on the president’s “self- succession project, by recruiting collation officers who are already awarding results based on their projects to actualise the perpetuation agenda, in which the people will not matter and the votes will not count” is not only utterly false, but a copious note from the book on the failed third term agenda of President Obasanjo.

“The man, President Buhari who has taken Nigeria’s reputation to a higher level internationally and is working hard to improve on the records of elections he found in place cannot descend to the level that Obasanjo has himself sunk.

“As for his attacks of the administration’s records in fighting corruption, what the former President said is no more than evidence that President Buhari’s war against corruption is succeeding. They thought it is all a joke.

“A leader who took USD 16 billion “upfront” to supply electric power yet failed to add a single megawatt to the national grid and to date, there is no trace of the money is jittery that he will be called to account. He is a coward.

“Chief Obasanjo, manifesting a confused state of mind blames President Buhari for the fall of Libya into a failed state and the unholy alliance between the Boko Haram terrorists and the ISIS, while at the same time calling it an African problem, saying “the struggle must be for all West African, Central African, North African and most East African States,” which really does not amount to saying anything new.

“Nigerians looked up to him as a role model and a ray of hope to ethical and clean leadership until President Yar’Adua called him out to explain what happened to the sixteen billion dollars of taxpayer’s money. It is clear that with him sitting on top of the heap of corruption, he is no different from the crowd he leads.

“This language of his 16-page letter, likening President Buhari to General Sani Abacha, a man he dreaded and the one who jailed him under military laws is most unfitting from a former President of Nigeria.

“The claim that President Buhari has put in place rigging machinery is both outlandish and outrageous. We are unable to get the words to describe a 90-year old liar, except to say that by the publication of this tissue of lies against the President, he Obasanjo, not the President will fall from everyone’s esteem.”

Garbage Shehu, can't you see you and perhaps your boss are the people that actually needs a doctor? Through out Obasanjo tenure he didn't embark on any form of medical tourism like your boss and even at older age, the man has bagged a PhD. Nigerians are wiser than 2015 today. We know that OBJ want Nigeria to work and it is obvious from insecurity, economic woes that lead to loss of over 12m jobs from a party that promised 3m jobs etc that the man although may have the sincerity to make Nigeria work simply lacks the competence.

You can and should use a more refined language for political opponents. You are not enemies, you just happened to be holding different political view.

Now to the issue. Let's assume Balarave Musa is 100% correct about OBJ does it justfiy the deliberate body language that intends to rig election? If GEJ had made up his mind to rig, he would has rigged it and nothing (the then candidate Buhari) wouldn't have been able to be president today.
But GEJ went out from South to appoint a core Northern as INEC chairman.
Apart from appointing someone from his geo-political zone as INEC chairman, he didn't see anything wrong about the appointment of his neice into one of the most strategic position at INEC despite the he public outcry. Thereafter, he's going after CJN. If he has no ulterior motive and has not raised the issue since the appointment of the man, why now that the election is near. Can't he wait until after all the election has been conducted and election cases completed?

Over all, you can't; against any parameters compare OBJ first tenure with what PMB is doing.

The President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, who is also the APC Presidential Candidate in the forthcoming Presidential Election, President Muhammadu Buhari, could not attend the Presidential Debate organised by the Nigeria Election Debate Group and the Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria which held today, Saturday, January 19, 2019 for the following reasons:

Firstly, out of several opportunities afforded our candidate to interact with the Nigerian people directly by different organisations, our presidential candidate has taken full advantage of another town-hall meeting organized by another group which held on Wednesday, January 16, 2019. He was also joined at that town-hall meeting by our Vice-Presidential candidate who is also the Vice-President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, SAN. Nigerians from all walks of life who were physically present and through on-line platforms asked uncensored questions which were adequately answered. It was also transmitted live by various broadcast networks in Nigeria.

In addition, the busy and hectic official and campaign schedules of Mr. President clashed with this programme. Today, Mr. President commissioned the Baro Inland Water Port in Niger State and campaigned in Niger and Plateau States where his time was over-stretched by the tumultuous and mammoth crowds in both States, (as seen by Nigerians on live television) and only returned to Abuja late this evening.

Whilst we thank the organisers for the invitation, we want to assure Nigerians that we shall continue to hold these debate groups and Nigerians in high esteem which our candidate has demonstrated during past election debates when he honoured similar invitations. Nigerians will also recall that a few weeks ago, our Vice-Presidential candidate, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, also attended the debate organized by the same organisations.

Lastly, we note the statement of the candidate of the PDP, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar who actually came for the event and left the venue when he did not see Mr. President, who is our candidate. According to him, he would not want to “attack” Mr. President in his absence.

It should now be obvious to Nigerians that for Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and the PDP, this election is all about attacking the person and programmes of Mr. President and not about proffering their own solutions to the problems they created during their sixteen years of misrule, maladministration and looting of the nation’s resources. When they cannot see President Buhari to attack, the content of their campaign becomes hollow, empty and “full of sound and fury, signifying nothing”. Now that Atiku Abubakar had a unique opportunity to explain to Nigerians his own vision and mission without a President Buhari in the picture, he ran away. Afterall, he has his own eight years of crass and grand corruption as Vice President to defend before the Nigerian people.

On February 16, 2019 we urge Nigerians to demonstrate to Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and the PDP, through their votes, how empty indeed their campaign has always been and to vote massively for President Muhammadu Buhari and Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, SAN who have started the rebuilding process of our great nation.

Point of correction oga and for record am not a supporter of Dino. NPF is simply being used by APC and that's what GEJ didn't do to APC.

We must protect our institutions against abuse. We are where we are today because of weak institutions like police. Imagine is PDP win by chance and then start turning police against all opposition parties especially APC how will thier members feel. I thought we have passed this stage.

Can the Police claim to be neutral in politics of 2019 election? Are their actions not giving tactical support to APC ? Has the allegations of arm build up in Kogi State by the state government been investigated?

The above questions and any more need to be answered by the police. They surely know the electorates will vote Dino next election as Senator not because the people live Dino that much but that is the only formidable voice against Yahaya Bello (PMB annoited Governor).

The way and manner the Governor has been running the state makes any opposition voice a good alternative to the present Governor in Kogi state. Unfortunately, the Tinubu annoited Faleke is being opposed by the cabal in presidency just because of fear of Tinubu. Kogi West by extension deserves the right to a candidate of thier choice band shouldn't be denied through political persecution of Dino Melaye.

We pray our hard earned democracy will be sustained and that on no account should the police be used as an instrument of political persecution.
