I don't know ohh. Maybe it's some kind of complex lol. Anything 'oyinbo' or 'unAfrican' must be ruled out.
So what is African about not taking corrections and writing things so that people can understand them? What is African about embracing mediocrity?

you should learn to put your own identity and language above others. we are not english people we are Yorubas, Igbos, Efik, Ibibios e.t.c. we are different nations packed into a creation by the selfish interests of english people.

correcting english grammar errors means upholding english, it is the duty of english people to uphold and elevate english culture while it is the duties of Yorubas, Igbos, Efik, Ibibios e.t.c to uphold their own culture.

note I used did not capitalize english.
Lol and our national language is still English. We are already in the situation, we need to move forward. Stop defending a stupid attitude from somebody who is supposed to be in higher education

By the way, if he wrote this thing in igbo or yoruba and it still had the wrong grammar, would you still defend it?

Of course, you dont need to capitalise English, this is an informal forum and not an essay.. who told you to capitalise anything??

This is not about English or culture or whatever. Its about indiscipline and a wrong attitude to learning

Thank you! Really, it isn't about polished grammar and making sure everything is spick-and-span, but being able to communicate clearly. For readers to understand.
Looool exactly but why are they defending it? I dont understand

IF YOU HONESTLY BELIEVE THAT THE ABOVE HAVE NO SENSE IN WHATSOEVER WAY AND THE CONTEXT DO NOT COMMUNICATE ANYTHING TO YOU THEN I BELIEVE YOU HAVE NEVER UNDERSTOOD ANYTHING COMMUNICATED TO YOU IN PIDGIN ENGLISH

BECAUSE IN ACTUALITY BROKEN ENGLISH IS SIMPLY PIDGIN ENGLISH .
In fact, you are correct. What i meant to say was the way he wrote it has no flow or relevance

Pidgin and broken English have grammar and rules, too. So it wasnt even Pidgin, it was just lazy, illiterate-reminiscent English

In fact if he had written a post in pidgin on another topic, i would still defend him because pidgin is a legitimate form of communication and i enjoy reading/listening to it when its used appropriately

"and we cant get through up to one sentence without being assaulted by one grammatical blunder or the other."

my simple question is this : was he or wasn't he able to communicate a message to you and the general public ?

because the above quoted seem to be somewhat exaggerated and no I dont think he is right in anyway but if you could see past your point and just read what I posted earlier you would find out my view was based on the fact he was COMMUNICATING something to you which you however aren't concerned about, if his choice or use of words were that bad that it somehow uttered it's meaning say like how not putting a comma where it ought to be practically changes the rhythm or intent of a written or given statement then and only then YOU SHOULD AND CAN BEGIN TO GET WORRIED ABOUT THE POSTER.

THE IDEA IS COMMUNICATION ITSELF NOT THE LANGUAGE BY WHICH IT IS ACHIEVED, IF THE POSTER FAILS IN COMMUNICATION THEN YOU CAN AS WELL AS I CAN, QUERY HIS LANGUAGE IN THIS SITUATION.
I understood exactly what he said; my point is that he should have paid more attention to the way he presented his problem. Why should he be soliciting for empathy when he cant even be bothered to read his own writing? So why should we disturb ourselves trying to read it? And when they went to correct him he refused to listen. Is it the kind of graduate we are producing?

Excuse me, a missing comma is even better than a missing word or bad verb conjugation.

"How can the prority of a department in the university is to reduce student.

What is there gain?"

So does this look normal to you?

If somebody comes to church in torn jeans and refuses to go and change as per the dress code of the church, will you defend him with the excuse "at least he is putting on trousers"?

If you dont communicate well with people you should be prepared to accept the criticism that comes with it

Miss, is it to your knowledge that there is a difference between "didnt" and "didn't?"
Don't you think there should be a comma after your "moreover" in the fourth paragraph.
We can never be perfect in the language. Why we keep thinking otherwise is something beyond my understanding.
Peace.
Of course! I am not writing using completely perfect grammar, we are in an informal setting. I didnt say he should write perfectly with all his punctuation in place...The guy is writing almost broken English that makes no sense upon reading and you people are defending it

"How can the prority of a department in the university is to reduce student.

What is there gain?"

Does this thing make any sense to you?

Continue paying attention to grammar instead of encouraging people to discover their selves.
And you continue to excuse mediocrity and encourage people to do the wrong thing because of inferiority complex

I'm not making excuses I encouraging you to see see education beyond English language.
Instead of you and the student of a guy to take correction on bad grammar you started talking about native languages

That sounds like an excuse to me

And for your information there is no education beyond indiscipline...dont come to the public with a poor product an expect them to sympathise with you

I never agreed to taming and controlling madam.. A wise person should know that anyone being controlled externally against their own wish is just a ticking time bomb waiting to explode.. My only concern is a loyal, submissive and intelligent woman who knows what to do and when to do it. And pls i don't have issues. Learn to understand a post before generalizing.. Enjoy ur day
We are in agreement

I am not generalising...you quoted me defending that guy...you should have distanced yourself from his comment if you didnt want to be included in it

have a nice day too

Good command of English is welcomed, now let me ask you this , where has it taken Nigeria to so far, considering the fact that our institutions have produced so many English base engineers and other professionals ?
And let me ask you as well, where has bad written communication, unserious behaviour, stupid attitude and linguistic indiscipline taken Nigeria so far?

a bachelors student who passed through over a decade of school cant write a simple sentence and youre here making excuses

communication involves exchange of information between two or more parties with that been said if you could at least grasp the writer's intention based on the information he provided, i believe that's good enough.

whilst I see no problem pointing out his or her errors, I don't think it's a cause to abuse the writer.

Just like a lecturer or teacher would overlook a few errors in other subjects or courses apart from ENGLISH LANGUAGE and other courses strongly related to it in terms of wrongly spelt words .

in all I sincerely think if you could understand what he meant by his content then you have little or no Justifiable cause to bother your distinguished self with his use of words.
What!

Those examples you cited are completely different

He came to a public platform to lament the state of his department. he is presenting his case to us, the public, and we cant get through up to one sentence without being assaulted by one grammatical blunder or the other. And when it was pointed out to him, he couldnt even modify it; in fact he continued to argue

If he writes an assignment for a lecturer, and the person is overlooking his mistakes to get the meaning, thats because the lecturer is looking for particular key-points which are more urgent in that context. And even at that, at a point, with writing as shoddy as this, he will have to remove some marks for poor communication

Why do you guys keep making excuses for the wrong thing..he should proof-read his writing before he posts an academic complaint, is it how he will continue until he graduates? we have a lot of problems in this country

You are wrong, from a legal perspective.

Actually, the law is that before you can record anyone in their privacy, you MUST inform them that you want to record otherwise, whatever you record is not admissible as evidence in a court (though it may shape public opinion).

His office is his privacy, his private office and you cant snag him there with a recording, especially for a situation you initiated.
it is called ENTRAPMENT and you are even an ACCESORY to the Crime~!.

This is different from when a crime is being committed in public or you see soemthing of "public interest" happening in a PUBLIC PLACE and you decide to record it, to aid investigation of law enforcement.
There are privacy laws that deal with this sort of situation.

if these Lecturers want to be brazen, they can sue and will win.
they will be re-instated back to their offices and will be handsomely rewarded.
But who wants a randy lecturer to be rewarded? I certainly dont want that. The damage is already done to ttheir reputation, though they deserve it.
That is the emotional part of me speaking but when the "legal part" kicks-in, l know that the lecturers rights have been violated and they are entitled to redress.

The LAW is an Ass
. undecided
Are you citing actual laws?

public interest and public areas are not the same thing...or are you just conflating them because they both contain the word "public"? the information gathered is necessary for getting rid of a particular societal ill..they are not going to get the bbc on entrapment

There are particular laws protecting journalists, thats how they expose stories all over the world...why is nigerias own suddenly different...

The lecturer cant have been violated if he was caught participating in lewd behaviour whilst on seat. if you misbehave whilst acting in an official capacity then who are you suing...

if he was speaking his mother tongue he would be fluent, in addition have you heard a chinese expatriate speak b4 ?
The national language of this country is English, he has gained admission into a higher institution and he is expressing himself very poorly. So why is he complaining that the lecturer failed him if he cant even write properly

If he was supposed to write this in Yoruba, why didnt he? Do we use Yoruba for written communication in this country?

Didnt the Chinese guy go to school and pass his papers in his own country before he left?

Moreover spoken English and written communication are completely different

Stop defending nonsense abeg

You are allowed to film and publish the recording from a private place if you feel that the information is in the public interest...

did you watch the video...

It has everything to do with his English now, why would a student write something like that...on a topic about bad results for that matter

So is he proving the lecturer right or wrong?

That means he's trying to say that he himself should not have been admitted into the department

Thats all! if he didnt expose himself by talking rubbish on international television, would there be any need for a panel??

He didnt talk rubish on international telivission, he was setup and filmed without his consent at his weakest moment thinking he was having a casual conversation on a saturday afternoon in his office
You still havent answered my other question

So why did he allow them to set him up? He didnt need to allow her inside, he could have directed her to the jamb office like you said and saved himself the shame

What kind of casual conversation are you talking about? with a 17 year old girl?

PS
Saka Oyetoro was a lecturer when he made advances to his student and they are married now,

Pastor abiara is married to his church memeber, Pastor Odusote remarried a church memeber after pastor bimbo died
No matter how you keep calling pastors, its your conscience that will hang you

Dont pastors have to marry? A pastor entering a civilised courtship arrangement with a church member is different from the disgrace that we saw last night

But who said you should marry somebody like that? dont project your issues onto this matter abeg

the reporter never said she acted as a student , she clearly acted as a prospecting student (teo very different things under any law) .. an to answer you.. a lecturer male or female can make sexual advances to willing individuals of the society, so long she isnt a student under them..

You talked about functioning well, grin i know you are just being emotional... but i'll ignored that and continue to be objective with you..

The mans parent are not to be blamed cos he was in his own office before the untrained lady came soliciting his attention ..

this case is simple and we shouldnt get paranoid or sentimental over it... if you pass your grades as a lady you have no business begging a man for admission in his office
Im not talking about the documentary, I asked you a simple question and youre refusing to answer because you know youre wrong

i wont train my daughter to seek admission in the office of a man( thats corruption) neither would i train her to be with a man who isnt her family member or husband in a secluded place alone for hours

the school has put up a panel to probe the case and the man placed on suspenssion prior to the completion of the investigation... so why not wait till the man is found guilty of any of the instituitions law guilty throwing him under the bus

its this barbaric atitude of jungle justice or judging based on a side of the emotional story that keeps Africa a black continent... both the accused and the defedants need legal representation and not just jumping the guns straight to humiliation
Are you sure you're really functioning very well? what does training have to do with this? Why didnt the mans parents train him not to be alone with small girls for hours? So all these girls are untrained? youre the only person who knows how to train a child?

Youre now talking about jungle justice and probing. A simple question, should a lecturer and pastor, or anyone in a position of power and authority be making sexual advances towards students?

Thats all! if he didnt expose himself by talking rubbish on international television, would there be any need for a panel??
