If he did, the new Christians that were formerly Jews themselves would have called Peter a fraud. The early Christians were not tithe payers. But were they giving to the church? Yes but not as tithe.

So, your point is the Catholic church borrowed tithe payment to cope with the financing a growing church. I think the same still goes with the doctrine of celibacy so that financing priests and their families will be minimal. In any way, leaving the issue of name alone, just keep financing the Kingdom of God is what matters.
