zakim: A former Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, on Wednesday, failed to appear before Justice Folashade Giwa of the Federal High Court Abuja, to explain his role in the alleged approval of N2.5billion to Pinnacle Communications Ltd. The money was for the purpose of the Federal Government Digital Switch Over (DSO) project.
Mohammed was listed by the ICPC prosecution counsel, Henry Emore, as additional witness to give testimony on the approval of payment of N2.5 billion to Pinnacle.
...Mohammed who approved the payment of N2.5billion to Pinnacle and joined him as a defendant in the case....
“Further more, the witness admitted that the N2.5 billion was released under the supervision of the former Information Minister. “To the best of my knowledge, the Presidency that released the N10billion to the NBC for the purpose of DSO has not complained of how the fund was used. “I am not aware if the former Minister had withdrawn his approval.” Meanwhile, Justice Giwa, has adjourned the case until July 1, for ruling on a motion by the 2nd and 3rd defendants seeking the release of their international passports to enable them travel abroad for official functions. Politics › Re: Where Nigeria Is Heading In The Next 10 Years - Osinbajo by Moikiitos: 10:02am On Jun 20, 2019 |
Oluwabash: The Federal Government's vision for Nigeria in the next 10 years and more is to transform the economy into an industrialized one with a strong middle class and a place where the majority of the people are living above the poverty line, according to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN. Prof. Osinbajo stated this at a Dinner and Interactive Session with some visiting Faculty Members from the Harvard Business School (HBS) led by Prof. Srikant Datar, a Professor of Business Administration, alongside a select group of Nigerian business executives, on Tuesday evening in Lagos. The Vice President featured alongside Srikant Datar and Mr. Bayo Ogunlesi, a Nigerian Investment banker in the United States of America, in a panel discussion moderated by Mr. Hakeem Belo- Osagie, Chairman of Metis Capital Partners and addressed several issues on power, the economy and climate change, amongst others. According to the Vice President, “I will like to see Nigeria become an industrialized nation in the next 10 years; with a very strong middle class and most people living above poverty line. Our policies and programmes are directed at achieving this objective." He said the Federal Government had put in place measures that will kick-start the industrialization drive of the country, citing the example of the creation of Special Economic Zones (SEZ) and small manufacturing clusters across the country as some of the steps taken by government. He said "practically everything we are doing is to ensure that there is a conducive environment for businesses to thrive. "The Federal Government is looking at natural economic clusters. We have done a lot of work in five of them, we are looking at 23 others, and we have already set up shared facilities in designated locations to address some of the concerns in production. "What we plan for the Special Economic Zones is also unique and geared towards that drive to industrialize our economy." Speaking on efforts to alleviate poverty, the Vice President said it is being addressed by government. When asked what keeps him up at night, Prof. Osinbajo said it is the problem of “extreme poverty; the issue is that the largest number of those who vote for us are the very poor. "The promises that government makes to them is that their lives will be better and obviously they are looking at their lives being better in the shortest possible time." He explained that a number of government policies and programmes were focused on people at the bottom of the pyramid, especially in agriculture and trade, and getting credit facilities to people in order to enable them improve in whatever they are doing. He said that many farmers had been lifted out of poverty as a result of some of the initiatives, adding nonetheless that the scale needs to be improved. According to him, "First, the focus of our government was on agriculture which has the potential to take many out of poverty. We are supporting farmers operating through the out-grower programme and our focus is to attain sufficiency in Rice, Sorghum and Millet production. "A lot of attention has also been given to the Social Investment Programmes (SIPs) which factored the provision of cheap credit to petty traders—at the bottom of the pyramid. We have given out cheap credits through our TraderMoni and MarketMoni initiatives and this has also proven to be largely successful." On Power, the Vice President said the government is committed to finding lasting solutions to issues militating against the improvements that ought to have been witnessed in the sector. "The issues are enormous but what we really need to do is to re-write regulations and encourage more people to invest in the sector. “In the next few months, we will unveil a plan that deals with most of the critical issues in the power sector,’’ he said. Addressing concerns raised about climate change, Prof Osinbajo said Nigeria would not act differently as "the momentum, globally, is in favour of renewable energy and recycling". He cited examples of what the Federal Government in partnership with the private sector have so far done, through the solar power programme in selected markets in Kano, Abia and Lagos States as well as the Federal Government Green Bond Initiative. On improving trade among countries in Africa, the Vice President said Intra-African trade is important and is "the way to go" but that there is the need to address concerns around dumping and protection of local manufacturers, amongst others before the endorsement of any agreements. Addressing the issue of brain drain and efforts to curb it, the Vice President expressed optimism that the steps being taken by government to improve the business environment in Nigeria will address the menace. According to him, “As people see that the environment is getting better for business, they will come back, the opportunities for making huge profits are here." He also noted that Nigeria was open to business as it has a lot of potential and urged Nigerian investors abroad to look homewards. “If you are going to do business anywhere in Africa, it has to be Nigeria. This is where you have the energy, you have the drive. “We are already seeing that kind of activity, business people will always be driven by profit," Prof. Osinbajo added. On his part, Datar said he was particularly proud of Osinbajo as an academic in governance, stressing that academics do well in governance. He pledged HBS’s readiness in providing needed support for human capital development in Nigeria and proffering solutions to tackling Nigeria’s infrastructure challenge. Also speaking at the event, Ogunlesi said that the era of depending on government for infrastructure was gone, adding the Federal Government had no business running infrastructure in Nigeria, especially the airports. In a vote of thanks, Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, regretted the high poverty rate in Nigeria especially in the North West and called for urgent action to address it, advocating for a committee on girl-child education to be set up to address issues surrounding early marriage and family planning. The event also attracted Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the US Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Stuart Symington, immediate past Minister of Trade and Investment, Dr. Okechukwu Enelamah, immediate past Minister of Budget and National Planning, Senator Udo Udoma amongst others. Abdulazeez99: The House of Representatives on Tuesday, passed a bill prohibiting the use of plastic bags by individuals and manufacturing companies in the country.
Igbere TV reports that the bill, which was sponsored by Hon. Edward Pwajok, is aimed at addressing waste management and protecting the environment.
The Plastic bag prohibition bill provides for: “an act to prohibit the use, manufacture and importation of all plastic bags used for commercial and household packaging in order to address harmful impacts to oceans, rivers, lakes, forests, environment as well as human beings and also to relieve pressure on landfills and waste management and for other related matters.”
According to the bill, any person found guilty of the offences above shall be liable upon conviction to a fine not exceeding N500,000 or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding three years or to both such fine and imprisonment.
It also prescribes a fine of N5 million to companies guilty of the aforementioned offences.
The bill states that a retailer shall offer a paper bag to the customer at a point of sale.
It also added that it was an offence to fail to provide customers with paper bags.
The bill emphasised that manufacturing plastic bags for the purpose of selling, and importing plastic bags whether as a carryout bag or for sale amounts to an offence.

Ethnicity shouldn't be the device for choosing our leaders in Nigeria but our electoral act should be amended to carry all along.
Whichever tribe you belong or come from in as much as you are competent and qualify...you should run. But, an Hausa should only be president if s/he wins votes from from other tribes, the same goes for an Igbo or Yoruba or any other minority tribes vying for that position.
We shouldn't decide our election based on the number of votes the candidates has but rather the number of votes from the different geopolitical region s/he was able to win excluding that which s/he comes from. That's: Each States of the federation is counted as 1 regardless of the population and size. Where you able to win 2/3 of that State, if yes then you won the State as 1win. The same goes for the remainder of the 36States and FCT as the decider if there's a tie.
This will ensure that a candidate is accepted by all Nigerians not just a section. It will also take out tribalism. The presidential tenure should be 5years with maximum of 2-terms a president can hold office. Mid-term election should be carried out to checkmate performance. |

Nigerian Police is end time police. 99.9% of the time for the negative reasons on the news. A synonym we should start using Nigeria to tag or label criminals and crimes in Nigeria = Nigerian PoliceGod help us for this once beautiful, ambitious and prosperous country called Nigeria ! comshots: April 18, 2019 Tunji Bosun, Abeokuta
A 52-year-old Canadian, Kyliuk Morris, on Tuesday said policemen in Ogun State assisted him to deliver the N2.5m ransom paid to his kidnappers to regain his freedom.
Morris, in a chat with PUNCH Metro in Abeokuta, said his ordeal started when he was abducted by the hoodlums at Fidiwo, in the Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State.
The victim said he was heading for Ibadan, Oyo State, when the incident happened on March 13, 2019.
The Canadian noted that he spent six days in the kidnappers’ den, adding that he was forced to eat eba and drink dirty water.
Morris explained that he was travelling with his wife to fix his car when the two gunmen shot at his car, which made him to drive into a ditch.
He noted that when his wife tried to escape to get help, the kidnappers shot at her, while he was led to a bush.
“I spent six days in the den of the kidnappers. They beat me up, while my wife ran around to raise the ransom they demanded,” he added.
The victim said he was forced to call his sister in Canada who provided the ransom before he regained his freedom. He said, “A policeman, who collected the ransom, paid the kidnappers to get me released from my abductors.”
The Canadian, who had been married to a Nigerian, Mrs Justina Kyliuk at the Marriage Registry, Accra, Ghana, since December 9, 2014, said they had been together for the past five years.
He stated that he decided to stay in Abeokuta to set up a farming business before the incident occurred. When asked about how he paid the ransom, Morris said, “A policeman assigned from Abuja gave my wife a telephone number to call an officer from the Special Anti-Robbery Squad in Ogun State.
“Aside from the ransom, they (police) asked my wife to give them N20,000 as transportation fare. They said they risked their lives to get me out. “I want the government to be aware of what happened to me. The Nigerian government has been pushing for foreign investors to come, especially for agriculture and yet, there is no security; absolute zero security.
“I am not calling for a special treatment because I am a Canadian. I want people to be aware of what is happening. I just did through personal experience. “If they (the police) have a job to do, they should do it. I think government at all levels should hold the police responsible for what they are hired for.
“If someone is kidnapped, the police should do their job. My wife went to see them, but they made no effort. My wife told them the exact place where I was; nothing was done. They dragged their feet.” When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Abimbola Oyeyemi, confirmed the Canadian’s abduction and release.
He described the allegation of being part of the ransom payment as false.
“He was rescued; what he said is impossible, who is that kidnapper that will come and collect ransom from the police? “It is not possible because the police have been campaigning against people paying ransom to kidnappers.
“If people stop paying ransom to them, they will stop the business of kidnapping; so, the police cannot encourage them.
“Immediately the case was reported, the state Commissioner of Police deployed all our tactical squads to find him at all cost and eventually, he was rescued. “We are not aware of any ransom deal. What we know is that he was kidnapped and rescued by the police,” the police spokesman said. https://punchng.com/police-delivered-n2-5m-ransom-to-my-kidnappers-canadian/amp/ |
