Crime › Lagos Tenant Sues Landlord For Damage by Morbeta11(op): 12:11pm On Nov 15, 2023
Lagos tenant sues landlord for damage

A Lagos tenant, Emeka Unateze, has sued his landlord, Justin Anyasodo, for forcefully entering and damaging his property in the Ishashi area of Lagos State.

Anyasodo was arraigned by the police before Magistrate O.Y. Adefope sitting before a Yaba Magistrate’s Court on four counts of malicious damage to property, forgery, and theft on Tuesday.

The prosecutor, Haruna Magaji, told the court that the defendant committed the offences because he was having a rent dispute with his client, Unateze.

Haruna also revealed that the defendant forged a court document claiming he was authorised to enter and destroy Unateze’s property worth N5.5m.

He further said the defendant threw the remaining property into the bush and locked the tenant and his family outside under the pretext that they were executing a court order claiming that after consulting, it was discovered that the purported court order did not exist.

He stated that the defendant stole one television set, one fridge, one fridge and a set of chairs and boxes containing jewellery valued at N5.5m.

According to him, the defendant committed the offence in March 2021, while Unataze was still his tenant and the offences contravened Sections 411, 339, 280, and 365 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2015.

The charges read in part, “That you, Justin Anyasodo and others now at large, sometime in March 2021 in Lagos, within the Lagos Magisterial District did conspire among yourselves to commit felony to wit malicious damage and forgery and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 411 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State 2015.

That you, Justin Anyasodo and others now at large, on the same date, time and place, and in the aforementioned magisterial district, did enter the house of one Emeka Unateze and maliciously damaged his properties and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable by Section 339 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.

“That you, Justin Anyasodo and others now at large, on the same date, time and place, and in the aforementioned magisterial district, did steal one television set, one fridge, one freezer, sets of chairs and boxes containing jewellery valued at N5.5m which belong to one Emeka Unateze and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 280 and punishable under Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.”

The charges were read to the defendant but he pleaded not guilty to them.

Following his not-guilty plea, Adefope admitted him to bail in the sum of N2 million with two responsible sureties.

The case was adjourned till December 15, 2023 for trial.

Fashion › Helen Williams Sets New Guinness World Record For Longest Handmade Wig by Morbeta11(op): 11:40pm On Nov 14, 2023

Nigerian woman Helen Williams sets new Guinness World Record for longest handmade wig
Helen Williams, a wigmaker from Lagos, has entered the Guinness World Records by creating the world’s longest handmade wig.

The wig measures an astounding 351.28 meters (1,152 ft 5 in) with Helen dedicating 11 days and over two million naira (£2,031; $2,493) to craft this remarkable wig.

The GWR acknowledged her feat, by sharing on its official “X” account, “Helen Williams from Lagos, Nigeria has achieved a new record for the longest handmade wig which stretches an incredible 351.28 metres (1,152 ft 5 in)”

Helen, after constructing the underlay with wig-cap netting and black fabric attached to a bicycle helmet, completed the hairpiece using 1,000 bundles of hair, 12 cans of hair spray, 35 tubes of hair glue, and 6,250 hair clips.

“Finding the materials to make the longest wig was not an easy task,” shared Helen. “My experience as a wigmaker helped a lot.”

Helen, is a professional wigmaker with eight years of experience. She produces impressive 50 to 300 wigs per week.

Despite her background, creating this record-breaking wig presented its own set of challenges.

“At some point, I felt exhausted,” she admitted. “However, friends and family encouraged me. I did not want to let them down, so I maintained my focus. The outcome is the longest handmade wig in the world.”

Finding a space to have the wig laid out in a straight line and accurately measured was one of the biggest challenges Helen faced as none of the venues she visited – including several running tracks – were long enough to accommodate it.

She eventually decided to do it beside the Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway, a long road connecting the cities of Lagos and Abeokuta.

Having achieved the feat, the extraordinary wig resides in Helen’s office, where she invites anyone interested to come and admire it “whenever they want to.”

Reacting to her new feat in the Guinness World Records book, Helen expressed her joy, remarking ‘it is one of the best things that has ever happened to me. I still cannot believe it'.

JUST-IN: Visas Of 264 Nigerian Passengers Cancelled On Arrival In Saudi Arabia

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, on Monday, cancelled the visas of all 264 passengers airlifted by Nigeria’s private carrier, Air Peace, on arrival in Jeddah from Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA) Kano.

The Saudi, however, insisted that the airline should return the passengers back to Nigeria.

However, after the intervention of Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the number of affected passengers was reduced from 264 to 177.

LEADERSHIP gathered that the flight took off from the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, via the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano on Sunday night and arrived Saudi Arabia’s major city on Monday without issues but on landing, the Saudi Arabian authorities announced that all the passengers’ visas were cancelled.

A source said that all the passengers and the airline personnel were shocked at the cancellation of the visas because during check-in of the passengers they went through Advanced Passengers Prescreening System (APPS), which were also monitored by the Saudi Arabia authorities before the flight left Nigeria.

The source wondered whether what happened was a strategy to discourage the airline from operating to the destination because since it started the operation it had been recording high load factor and even the flight was expected to leave on Tuesday to Jeddah was already fully booked.

When the Nigerian embassy waded into matter, Saudi authorities were said to have reduced the number of passengers that would be returned to 177 from 264.

Saudi Air has been operating directly from Nigeria to Saudi Arabia and since Air Peace started flight service to the Middle East nation at relatively lower fares, it has been receiving high patronage and as Nigerian carrier, it helps to conserve foreign exchange for the country.

A source from the Nigerian embassy in Jeddah said that even the Saudi Immigrations personnel said that they didn’t know who cancelled the visas but that they were cancelled when the airline was already airborne to Jeddah.

The source said, “The airline was exonerated in all this as the Advanced Passenger Prescreening System (APPS) which is live between both countries would have screened out any invalid visa and its passenger. The system accepted all affected passengers and passed them on.”

Those deported were 177 passengers and Air Peace has already left with them back to Nigeria.

“They are on their way to Nigeria now,” the source said.

Industry observers attributed this to aeropolitics, noting that it was a way to force the Nigerian operator out of the route unless government intervenes, adopting the principle of reciprocity.

No African artist bigger than Burna Boy – Grammy organisers

The Recording Academy, organisers of the Grammy Awards, have postulated that there is no Afrobeats star or African artist who is “bigger” than Nigerian singer Damini Ogulu, aka Burna Boy.

The Academy made the assertion in a statement published on its website on Saturday, congratulating Burna Boy and other nominees for the newly created Best African Music Performance category at the 2024 Grammys.

The Grammys said Burna Boy is “firmly in his imperial era” havimg collaborated with “global stars such as Ed Sheeran and Justin Bieber,” and also earned his first UK No. 1 album this year with “the classic hip-hop influenced I Told Them…, featuring appearances from 21 Savage, J. Cole, RZA, and GZA.”

The Academy said, “There’s not a bigger star in Afrobeats, or even the whole of Africa itself, than Burna Boy. He nabbed two consecutive Best Global Album GRAMMY nods for his albums Twice as Tall and African Giant, and he’s also collaborated with global stars such as Ed Sheeran and Justin Bieber.”

DAILY POST reported that Burna Boy’s ‘City Boys’ was nominated in the maiden Best African Music Performance category at the 66th Grammys.

‘City Boys’ will contest the award with Davido and Musa Keys’ ‘Unavailable,’ Ayra Starr’s ‘Rush,’ Asake and Olamide’s ‘Amapiano, and Tyla’s ‘Water.’

Burna Boy also bagged nominations in three other categories; ‘Sitting On Top of the World’ featuring 21 Savage – Best Melodic Rap, ‘I Told Them’ – Best Global Music Album, and ‘Alone’ – Best Global Music Performance.

Family › Re: My Mom Refused To Do Omugwo And She’s Causing Havoc by Morbeta11(m): 7:25pm On Nov 07, 2023
OmugwoAunty:
Nairaland, please what should I do?

I gave birth 9 months ago and for some reason, my mom never expressed interest in visiting me and my child. She is a new wife now and I heard from some family members that when she wanted to come, her new husband said ‘your daughter has other people around, why are you worrying yourself’.

I did not take it personally at all. My mother has never been a dependable person. Me and my mom still talk everyday and my child is always on her status. This is her ONLY grandchild.

My mom’s elder sister’s (my aunty) youngest child is moving to my area. My aunty said that she’ll visit me during the move, and come and hold baby. She reached out to my mom and even told my mom that if they plan it, they can visit me together. My mom and my aunty are VERY close. I even consider my aunty my second mom in a way.

Suddenly, my mom starts calling me, saying she wants to plan her visit. I say okay. But with work and everything, my aunty will get here before her. She started telling me not to let my aunty into my house, saying that my aunty is a husband snatcher etc. she said my aunty will destroy my home. I tell her I don’t care about that. She started calling their mutual friends and telling them to tell me that my aunty is a husband snatcher. I did not fall for that.

Frustrated, she called my aunty and said that the truth is that my husband is uncomfortable. She said that MY husband is not from our town and that my husband’s people don’t like visitors. She said that I did not tell her about this out of respect.

My aunty called me and was apologizing, saying that she did not know. I responded and said that this is a lie. I even put my husband on the phone. Here’s my mistake - I sent her a screenshot showing my mom saying that she’s a husband snatcher and that’s why I should not let her into my home.

My aunty and I now agreed that we should let peace reign and that she won’t visit. She said she will still like to see me and we can meet somewhere. MATTER SUPPOSE TO END.

My mom decided to bring my aunty husband into this. She told my auntys husband that his wife is not respecting my husband’s wishes. My auntys husband now sent her my screenshot saying that he knows the real reason and that your child doesn’t even support you.

The screenshot has shattered my mom. She feels betrayed. My siblings who live with my mother are calling me a betrayer. I want to salvage the relationship between my siblings and I, not so much my mother. I have not spoken to any of them since the screenshot.

What do I do? How do I approach this.
Tell your Mom, aunty, your siblings and the husbands to go to a community football field, vent all their issues there.......the field will accommodate all their frustration, vexatious eruptions and still have enough space for peace and harmony. From your narration, your mom and aunty are very hot 🔥 individuals...your husband should cover himself with blood of the lamb.

Politics › Tinubu To Unveil Birth, Death Registration Portal Wednesday by Morbeta11(op): 2:07am On Nov 07, 2023
Tinubu to unveil birth, death registration portal Wednesday

President Bola Tinubu is expected to unveil an electronic Civil Registration and Vital Statistics System and Geospatial Data Repository on Wednesday.

The Chairman, National Population Commission, Nasir Kwarra, made this known on Monday at a pre-launch briefing in Abuja.

According to Kwarra, the launch of the e-CRVS by Tinubu marks, “The commitment of the current government and leadership to strengthen civil registration data capturing, collation, processing, dissemination and timely access to statistics on vital events in the country.

“It aims to accelerate the improved civil registration and vital statistics systems in Nigeria over 10 years, from 2023 to 2030 in a bid to achieve the Sustainable Development Goal.”

The chairman stated that the commission, in collaboration with the United Nations Children’s Fund, developed the eCRVS Operational Readiness Assessment Report which showed the potential of digital technologies in providing transformative outcomes in CRVS and integrating data from multiple systems to securely store data at scale, in a cost-effective way in Nigeria.

“The report ushered in the bold step taken by the Commission for a transformative innovation of the eCRVS (Vital Reg) system by developing a Public Private Partnership arrangement between the Commission and Barnksforte Technologies Limited.

“The PPP arrangement is to promote the Vital Reg System as a completely electronic system that digitalizes all civil registrations such as birth registration, stillbirth registration, birth attestation, adoption, marriage notification, divorce notification, migration and death,” the chairman explained.

He noted that the system provides a digital certificate in all cases, an accessible verification platform to registered organizations, and a central management system (dashboard) that depicts and analyses collated civil registrations into vital statistics for proper decision-making.

He added, “This process marks a complete departure from traditional paper-based recording of vital events to a state-of-the-art digital solution that conforms to international best practices. This electronic CRVS promises to revolutionize how vital events are recorded, tracked, and analysed in the country.

“It should also be noted that NPC, in the course of preparation for the first digital Census in Nigeria, the Census mapping using a ‘cutting edge’ technological methodology, i.e. Geographic Information System captured geospatial data covering a multidimensional theme with total coverage of the Country.

“This repository database will also be launched by Mr President for the use of the public and private sector in Nigeria. The CRVS National Coordination Committee will also be inaugurated by Mr President.”

Lagos seals off Ajah market, demolishes illegal structures at jubilee bridge

The Lagos state government has sealed off the Ajah market and demolished illegal structures mounted by traders around the Jubilee bridge.

The joint operation was carried out by officials of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC) and the environmental task force.

“Demolition of illegal street traders structures around the Ajah Jubilee bridge. The combined team of Lagos State Waste Management Agency, LAGESC and Environmental Task Force also sealed the Ajah market today Sunday 5th November, 2023 in pursuant of the State’s declaration of zero tolerance ‘War on Waste,” Jubril Gawat, senior special assistant to the Lagos governor on new media, wrote on his X page.

In the last couple of months, the state government has been ramping up the closure of markets over environmental infractions.

On October 23, the Lagos government cordoned off the Alaba international market in the Ojo LGA over poor environmental practices.

Tokunbo Wahab, Lagos commissioner for environment and water resources, said the market was “sealed up for poor waste disposal practices, failure to pay waste bills and gross environmental sanitation offences”.

Soludo condems idolatry in South-East

The Anambra State governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, has decried the increasing rate of idolatry in the South East, noting that it is disheartening, despite the proliferation of churches across the region.

He noted that out of the number of people professing Christianity, only a few are genuinely practising it.

This is just as he advised church leaders not to focus on physical projects to the detriment of evangelism and soul-winning.

Soludo, who said this during the 10th edition of the Anglican Prayer Rally of Anambra State, in Awka, on Saturday, called for a reduction of fees charged in schools owned by churches to ensure affordability for the vulnerable and the downtrodden in society.

He said, “The increasing rate of idolatry amidst the proliferation of churches is regrettable. We must avoid the complacency of those who feel we have arrived; making the church remain on a maintenance level.

“If we are not careful, I see a dangerous trend where the church will get distracted in various directions of system maintenance, projects upon projects.

The governor stressed that the essence of governance and Christianity remained touching on the lives of the poor and vulnerable while assuring that his government is committed to the citizens’ welfare amid limited available resources.

The Archbishop, Province of Niger and Bishop of Awka Diocese, Most Rev. Alexander Ibezim, called on both the federal and state governments to make necessary sacrifices for the betterment of the citizenry.

Earlier in his sermon, the Bishop of Amichi Diocese, Rt. Rev. Ephraim Ikeakor said the essence of the prayer rally was to allow the congregation to encounter God who desired fruitfulness and multiplication for his children.

Alleged multi-million-pound bribe: I need prayers – Diezani cries out

Former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Allison-Madueke has asked Nigerians to pray for her over the multi-million-pound allegations and charges of bribery and corruption instituted against her by the United Kingdom National Crime Agency (NCA).

“I need prayers. Please pray for me,” she told members of the Nigerian community in the UK after the hearing on the fifth-floor courtroom.

A top lawyer who flew from Nigeria to represent his client, Benedict Peters, said after the hearing that “the case is weak,” and won’t fly.

Speaking to journalists in front of the court, Emeka Ozoani (SAN) argued that “they, NCA, have spent five to six years investigating the case and are trying to justify what they’ve done with taxpayers’ money.

“l came to represent one of those linked to the case.”

Asked if he flew from Nigeria just for the hearing. He replied: “Yes. I came because of my client.”
