lagos is a jungle.be carefull when you come.i recommend abuja for you.

south africa is nice but the hate against other africans especially nigerians is the thing bringing the country down. if only south africans can have the nigerian spirit!
RSA if you coming into lagos. The people are very friendly. I lived in lagos over 20 years of my life and go back frequently so I am a reliable source. I

If you hang around the island, lekki and Ikoyi you are good to go which is pretty much the commercial nerve center of the city. lagos is very similar to new york or even johannesburg in that is a busy city with people scufflling here and there so don't become over-whelmed by what you see. If you have guide to show you round the city that would be highly recommended if this is your first time. However be observant of everything around you and notice that lagos people are very loud and in your face, much like new york but will do you no harm.

As for the comments on the "Nigerian spirit" . The reason Nigerians don't get into the business of other Africans per say is because they are too busy trying to sort themselves out to pay attention to any other countries problems. That is the Nigerian spirit you are obviously talking about.

Hye peoples

I have been noticing a trend concerning movies that are being rented by my fellow naijas, more and more they have swirtched from regular nollywood movies to Movies which have predominantly Ghanaian actors like Jackie Appiah, nadia Buari and Van Vick.

DO you think Nollywood is experiencing a Ghanaian Hostile Take over?

It was just the hipocrosy of it all, that the sun shines out of South Africa's ass because they are going to build a few stadiums for the 2010 world cup. that money should be spent on housing, health care, law and order and a million other things.

Having a few glitzy buildings does not make the RSA better than any other African nation when in so many other areas it falls down.

We have to focus on the pain and anquish as it will all be there after the 30 days of football has finsished lipsrsealed lipsrsealed lipsrsealed
The exposure the country is going to get from hosting a world class event is a good thing cause it will generate economic activity and in turn the capital will trickle down to the common man and hopefully a few people will benefit. Even before RSA started postign pics of SA most of us were aware of the beauty and well planned infrastructure of the country. Some of us however don't have an idea what the place looks likes so this forum is basically for them.

To do a comparison of who is better off comparing Nigeria and SA is very relative in terms of population, politics, stability, history, education wealth and access so thses parts are debatable.

It is incumbant on all of us as Africans to point out our weaknessess only then do we realize our short comings and try to fix the problem.

Like I said earlier xenophobia is real and not just a conjured up premise by the media. Violence is a significant problem for SA when you factor in the advanced nature of the country so the SA governemtn trying to tuck these things under the rug even during the World cup will not help in the long run. We saw the results of this just a few months ago. Those people that died were HUMAN BEINGS. AIDs is a big problem for the country as well and believe me I have done live statistics on this and when stats say 1 in 5 or 1 in 4 SA are infected, those figures are almost statistically correct.

I however encourage the promotion of 2010 with a WARNING LABEl though cause all is not well in SA.

Everything of value in South Africa has been built by the whites, the unfortunate fact is that if it was left to the natives, RSA would be no different to Nigeria. The white farmers also feed the nation and many are now facing losing their farms in land repatriation. If this happens, RSA will go the same as many other African nations who can not feed themselves (Zimbabwe as a prime example)

It was the white farmers that made Zimbabwe the bread basket of Africa, now the black farmers can not grow anything and people starve.

Instead of posting pictures of multi million dollar white man construction projects, lets see the reality of black South Africa in 2008.

The truth sometimes hurts lipsrsealed lipsrsealed
It is good you are posting these pictures cause a coin does have two faces. However the point of people with a brain is not to focus on the pain and anguish you feel when you see this pictures but to try to understand the underlying reasons that caused such reactions which is the only way you save lives in the future and a nation can move forward in making sure such things do not repeat themselves.

I dare you to mention ONE country on earth  that has not gone through a similar occurence. If you can, then go ahead an codemn SA all you want. You will be justifiedi n doing so, but if you can't then please be constructive in your criticism instead of spewing anger and Hate.

Expressing your opinion is good but not when it is not constructive, otherwise thats trolling.

RSA and Mpele

As I mentioned earlier, Your country is faced with the dilemma of strenghtening cultural and economic ties with other African nations in terms of re-educating the people(especially the black populous) on the potentials of doing business with other like nations. You can begin with the southern countries by building strong cultural and economic ties. Most the SA companies outside of the country are not owned or operated by the black/coloured population. One because "THEY" keep making you think there is no potential in these other countries.

Let me give you an example. The GDP of most well to do African Americans surpasses many countries around the world yet their investments are limited to their country thereby limiting their growth potential and thus the ability to expand. If today Jay Z and a bunch of well to do business men venture into a country like Nigeria or Ghana, their potential turn around is limitless depending on what type of business they get into, thereby expanding their porfolio not only within their country but around the entire world. They have access to the best technology and know how, yet are limited by their range of foresight. Why do you think?

Cause someone doesn't wnat them to know or have the ability to penetrate those markets.

Don't become a victim of the house Negro/ Field negro syndrome.

TravelRe: Enjoy South Africa In 2010 (a Must See) by morpheus24: 6:27pm On Aug 13, 2008
Africa has a lot to offer to Black South Africans. Most S. Africans should make it a perogative to travel to other african countires if not for leisure then business. The same reason an Afrian American doesn't know the capital of Ghana is the same reason a S. African doesn't.

The use of the word "FOREIGNER" is alien to most Africans or more precise West Africans. I do not see a Ghanaian or senegalese person as a foreigner in the country though they are, its a misnomer to my thinking. THe very word creates division. The cockiness of most Africans is misunderstood and simply self pride in ones identity.

Theh bully effect is what causes Short-tempered ness in most South Africans as well as the quick reaction time. See similarities with African Americans to understand that point. Everyone should behave when they venture into someone elses country but that is not an open invitation to intimidation.
To understand the Nigerian psyche you have to imagine the largest number of people living on the continent struggling in a small space. This breeds aggression, a wanting to stand out in all situations and a yearning to progress rapidlly. Competition creates this.

I speak to a lot of a Africans and the excitement of SA hosting the World cup has dwindled amongst the continent's populous due to the negative imagery of the unwelcome spirit of SAfricans . I am however aware of the media hype and know this is not something that happens on a daily basis. Hoever imagery is a powerful medium and i am really not sure how You guys will fix that but its up to you.
As for Nigeria we know what problems we have as far as imagery is concerned but as you probably know well now have to live with these perceptions and only try our best to let people know out of 140 million people there are only a minute number of rotten eggs.

Good luck with 2010.

Mpele:
Race relations in South Africa is like in USA and Brazil. But mainly our system is like the one in the USA. Just like in the states the areas are divided. In the states you have the hood or the ghetto, while in South Africa we have the townships. Racial segregation has ruled the two countries for two centuries. After 1994 in South Africa thing improved. Blacks, Whites and Indians mingle freely and even marry each other. Yes just like in Europe and America we also have right wing, racist whites. But besides that race relations have improved. The only thing that makes our so called fellow Africans hate us is that we don't have any connection with the continent in terms of the way of life and also the culture. The only thing binding us together is the skin colour and the geographic location of our country. You average South Africans don't even know some of the countries in the continent. Two of the most well known countries are Zimbabwe and Nigeria.

What I want to tell Nigerians is that we never choose to live like this. Nobody called white people to South Africa. To tell the truth, I'm glad they came. Our standard of living is way much better than of any country in Africa. Many South Africans don't even see a need to seek a better life in America or Britain. Many Africans who are in Europe or America always say that they're exploring, that's a lie. Many of you are escaping poverty in your countries. I've been to Ibadan and also Lagos. The level of poverty in these towns is no difference to other countries like Senegal, Ghana, Cameroon etc. Yes we have poverty in South Africa, but that is a drop in the ocean compered to Africa.

People can insult us and call us names, but I' proud that I'm living in a cultural melting pot. I don't need buy a plane ticket to see white, Indians and other tribes. I have them right here. I have Indian, Chinese and white friends. I have learned about ther culture and they've learned about mine. I proudly South African
4 the first time in this forum you are actually bringing it on an intellectual stance. You hit the nail on the head on several points. I am a student of African history and each time I come across the history of S. Africa and its aftermath there is no doubt in its striking similarities with the experience of African Americans in America in terms of the psyche of the people.

There has been an observable disconnect of S. Africans with the continent of Africa in terms of knowledge and a shared history of relations. A problem whether deliberately constructed or circumstantial, non the less a problem. Everyone loves their country as much as you love yours so don't question the reasons people flee their homelands, If they had a choice they would not leave. Everyman seeks to exercise his right to life and liberty anywhere he can find it, because SAfricans are fortunate or unfortunate enough (depending on how you look at it) to benefit from the foundations of first world technologies, does not make you better in any human terms that another human. SOME people would not trade the inhumane treatment and psychological damage of many who have suffered in the hands of oppressors for all the luxuries in the world. I suggest you study the HAUSA people that live in Nigeria and calculate the percentage of them who actually leave the country.

Like the African Americans it is ultimately your choice if you wish to have a solid cross cultural relationship with the rest of Africa. Whether you do or not , We will still be hear today, tommorrow, next millenium and forever. You have seen what segregation and separation creates. The bullying effect is a very powerful psychological phenomenon. FREE YOUR MIND!

Eziachi:
Don't bring colour into this. Are saying that we shall bring back the Brits so that we can be like South Africa? There is nothing wrong with black man and their skills, it just that our culture of bigmanism is killing many African nations. People in power threat their positions as unelected Monarchs.

South African is still progressing after aparthide because Mandela set the pace for good governance, couple with well develop white skills which they deliberately retained instaed of being consumed by revenge after the minority rule but the likes of Nigeria completely wiped out any trace of the whiteman after their independence instaed of keeping some of them for a while to get the skills from them.

Nigeria for instance were so desperate that they change the way we drive from left to right just to prove a point, changed the pounds to a useless Naira just to prove a point of our independent. Look at at how Mugabe ended up with Zimbabwe when he decided to use unskillful people instaed of experience.
Eziachi you are quite wrong on some of your points here. Nigeria did not wipeout any White people nor was is necessary to keep them. When other non-western countries became independent or charted their own destiny, the key to their success was efficient management of their fiscal policies and both human and natural resources, something Nigeria is clueless about because of those power hungy illiterates that run government. The transfer of skilled labor from the hands of the White specialist to the hands of the capable domestics is essential to curb dependency manipulation of those who discovered the technology first.

The world cup is a good thing for S. Africa only if they continue to realize how important it is for the image of Africa as a whole and with much responsibility comes much scrutiny.

Hello Everyone.
The truth about Nigeria is that we offended God;if not,in most if not all churches in the land people don't fail to pray for Nigeria.
Why with all these prayers we still get very bad leaders that leave most of us baffled by the brazen way they go about with the looting of funds without a care in the world whether they will be noticed and caught?
Truth is: prayer is not enough anymore.there must some other way to solve Nigeria's myriad of problems.
So fellow nairalanders,start thinking!huhhuhhuhhuhhuh??
If what you are saying is right then about 85% of Africa must have offended God to receive such a punishment from Him, otherwise the alternative is there is some endemic systematic problem that most african countries are suffering which if tackled correctly can be solved.

i think we should stop asking God for help and start helping ourselves first.

It wasn't until after my studies and close experience with patients that suffer from this ailment did I realize what it really was and I felt very guilty for not understanding what was going. Because of the wild superstitious beliefs in African culture the stigma for people who suffer from mental illnesses is exacerbated.
