Even though I have many reasons to wish the North be separated from the South, I do not think it would be just in the long-run. What Nigeria needs is serious reformation. The South has her problems too. However, the North is still decades behind the South in terms of a very important resource - skilled manpower.

Northern leaders should start thinking like Kamal Ataturk of Turkey. Deemphasize the role of religion in government (this does not mean interfering with people's right to practice their religion), and encourage education and modernization. This was how Turkey was transformed from the old-style Caliphate system of the Ottoman Empire of yesteryears to the modern industrialized powerhouse state it is today!

Trade will continue between North and South if there is a split, but there is no doubt that the North is greatly impeding the growth and development of the South. The Abuja you live in is built solely on oil money from the south, so even that would not exist without the oil.

The people stopping the division of Nigeria are from the North, along with a few collaborators from elsewhere. Take case in point - when the political reforms conference by OBJ was under way, and the South South wanted 25% derivation, the higher number of states from the North (19) used their 'bloc vote' to defeat the motion by the South to increase its share of its OWN resources.

Simply speaking, the lopsided nature of the federation gives the North higher say in the running of the country due to higher numbers, unfortunately so.

"Capital Investment" unfortunately is a reality but yes I was talking about Nigerian or majority Nigerian owned corporations. Thats the unfortunate dilemma in adopting capitalist based system. If the government afforded these growing companies with the capital they need with minimal control of the enterprise and then gradual pulled out of the the corporations then we could develop powerful companies that would be large sources of revenue for the government in form of taxes and job creation.

Privitization in conjuction with Government regulation and oversight is a good mixed economic combination but judging from teh corruption levels in the country and the preoccupation of linening their pockets. Privitization might lead to more exploitation.

I think indigenous home grown privitization should be wholly encouraged and supported.

Marginalizing people or regions in a country is a dangerous combination in a country as diverse as Nigeria. If we are to follow the trends of globalization in terms of how the world is moving economically then it is in the best interest of the south south to seperate from the north. I am under no assumption that all they do there is rear cattle. Advocating some sort of seperation does not mean we cannot trade with the Northeners when it comes to these commodities you speak off. I mean really is using a cow versus a goat something of high importance in determining if a country should together.

The countries that broke away from the soviet union did so for a reason( the world was going capitalist and democratic) otherwise I wonder why they didn't choose to stick with Union seeing that it was advantageous to them in terms of size and technological know how.

Gone are the days of the situation that took place during the Nigerian/Biafran war in as far as allies are concerned. We are dealing with the threat of terrrorism, islamic fundamentalism, religious persecution and so on. i dulb the West willb e as forth coming as in the past in supporting the north as was imperative in the past due to the cold war syndrome.

If I may ask why do you have such profound hatred for the north? The way I see it you are afraid to confront the Yoruba’s knowing fully well that you risk onslaught from their ever representative members in nairaland. This relative fluidity of identity is one of the factors, which make the Diaspora of Post Colonialism a nation afloat.

With all due respect to Eziachi I think he is stuck in the past and is suffering from post Biafra withdrawals. I believe every peoples have a right to self determination but the Nigerian experiment is working in many underlying aspects which Eziachi is unwilling to acknowledge and is bent on focusing on the negative effects of several situations.

Even if the Igbo or Biafra were given the the south south part of the country today, the inbred corruptive nature of the Former NIgerians will linger in that state and probably will ultimately destroy it.

I for one support the peacful seperation of the northern and southern belt of the country. Lets see how the north will deal with being completely cut of from the sea region in terms of importation, oil revenues and survival.

Ifd al lthe oil revnues were diverted to the actual  states that actually contribute to its production I don't see how the south will not have enough income to buy the food supply it needs and have enough reserve to import and practise technology based farming systems akeen to the vegetation of the south.

Frankly speaking I don't see any usefulness the north offers the southern part of Nigeria in terms of ingenuity,innovation, economic activity other that food.
