If truly he was arrested, the military must have had very incontrovertible evidence to warrant that and nothing will happen because of that. Smh.... These people want to turn these traditional rulers into demigods. Until people who have seen themselves as being untouchable are pushed away from their high horse, Nigeria may never really break free. The time is now. 6 Likes 1 Share |

That's the way to go. The approach should be 2-in-1: military bombardment followed by negotiations when they're really seriously about it, after we've also exerted our own 'pound of recompense' on them. 10 Likes |

I'm not a Fayose fan, but I totally support that radical decision. Desperate situations require desperate measures and he's taken one. Despite the fact that their cattle are stolen in hundred and even thousands in places like Zamfara, you'll never read news of massacre there. How funny. 53 Likes 3 Shares |

SmartChoices: Let that not be your worry. Keep your calm. If police were to arrest a formidable armed robbery gang today, other members who were not arrested will certainly want to strike back, would the police now because of the backlash refuse to their job? No. In the short or long run, everything will be brought under control. I personally do not wish him to face the humiliation of being arrested, so let him secretly cooperate to return all stolen monies. |

They RESCUED a terrorist HUSBAND along with her, thus setting a record as the first administration to rescue both a kidnapped person and the kidnapper and honour them both with visit to The president. Why should you intentionally choose to say this lie when you know that that man you pointed as the "husband" is the elder brother of the girl and not the terrorist? GEJ is not above the law and will never be. This govt will not capitulate to any criminal gang. If we continue to grant amnesty to criminals, a time will come that we might be forced to grant amnesty to armed robbers too,and in a few years' time, another set will rise - and the cycle continues. 1 Like |

Which God-fearing or godly lady will agree to be living with a man that has not yet married her? Unless you too believe someone could be godly and be committing fornication. I will advise you to take time to talk to your brother especially with respect to your Mum's health. The thread that separates BH from ND militants is very tiny. They've humiliated the FG a lot, they need to get a dose of some punitive actions before we talk about negotiations. 1 Like |

While PDP apologists will tell you it's opposition witch-hunt, all I see is that the EFCC is really blowing hot on all sides. We're getting it right this time around. The court has sanctioned it, so if you disagree with it from now till a thousand years, it changes nothing. This will go a long way a huge consolation to the innocent ill-equipped gallant soldiers who died fighting BH whilst Dasuki, Fani-Kayode, etc, were sharing the arms fund. 1 Like |

This is a very brilliant and balanced writeup by Reuben Abati. As much as I agree with him that Buhari should not embark on "vengeance" as he calls it, the truth is that if we continue the cycle of bringing negotiations first whenever a group rises against the govt with arms, it will continue to repeat itself. 4 Likes |

...Not a few persons have asked: what else do Niger Delta militants want? Recall that in 2009, late President Umaru Yar’Adua introduced an amnesty programme to end Niger Delta insurgency. Two years earlier, the architects of Nigerian politics had also deemed it necessary to allocate the Vice Presidency to the Niger Delta, and by sheer providence, the occupier of that slot, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan soon became Acting President following the death of his boss, and later in 2011, he won the Presidential election and became President. For about seven years, under this programme, introduced by President Yar’Adua and sustained by President Jonathan, Niger Delta militants were demobilized and disarmed. The top hierarchy soon became security consultants to the Federal Government, monitoring pipelines, and helping to check oil theft. The middle cadre was placed on a monthly stipend while those who could be trained were sent to technical colleges and universities in Southern Africa and Eastern Europe. The militants became rich and gentrified, and with their kinsman in office as President in Abuja, the people of the Niger Delta began to feel a sense of ownership and belongingness that no one in that region had felt since 1960. But what is now happening clearly shows the limits of the politics of appeasement that Nigeria has played since independence. No country can be successfully run on a short-term basis and through the assignment of tokens to aggrieved parties within the union. It was mere delusion to have ever imagined that the people of the Niger Delta could ever be successfully appeased with a pacifying short-term amnesty programme and a shot at the Presidency. Even under President Jonathan, there were protests about the distribution of amnesty largesse, and disagreements among the former militants, who practically relocated to Abuja to take advantage of their brother’s ascendancy. The quarrel was all about who got what and it was only a matter of time, before those who felt short-changed would stage their own drama, which they have now started, in the hope that they may be luckier this time around and get their own share of appeasement. This is the sub-text of the deliberate distancing by the new boys from the old guard of militants. The bad news is that President Muhammadu Buhari doesn’t seem to be in a hurry to address these fundamental issues. He probably has every reason to be angry, and he may even raise such questions as: what is wrong with these Niger Delta avengers? What exactly do they want to avenge - their kinsman losing election? Do they think they can blackmail government even when the amnesty programme has been “magnanimously” extended? These may sound emotional, but they are serious questions, signposting how access to power at the centre and survival in that space has become a victim of deterministic ethnic rivalry. The emerging trend that whoever becomes President of Nigeria now has to worry about the possibility of being sabotaged by an aggrieved ethnic group or groups is dangerous for our democracy... There is no justification however, for President Buhari, in dealing with these challenges, to also play the game of vengeance. Speaking in China, recently, he directed the military to crush the new Niger Delta militants and indeed there has been a scaling up of military operations in the region. A military solution to a crisis such as this, as has been learnt with the Boko Haram, and much earlier in the Niger Delta, ultimately proves to be inadequate; instead there should be a return to the core issues of making Nigeria a country that works for everyone regardless of extraction - religious or ethnic. President Buhari is a livestock farmer; it should not be too difficult for him to understand how the chickens are now going home to roost in the Niger Delta. In the face of unemployment rate hitting 12.1%, youth unemployment, 42.24%, the GDP recording a negative growth of -0.36%, inflation standing at 13.7%, crude oil accounting for 90% of exports and 70% of national revenue, crude oil production dropping to low levels, and the country facing recession, a foreign exchange and power supply crisis, and financial insolvency, renewed restiveness in the Niger Delta, and threats by avengers who want to cut off Nigeria’s key source of revenue, can only further deepen the people’s agony, and place the country on danger list. President Buhari may deal with the impunity and criminality of the avengers, but Nigeria must address the more ideologically original parts of their protest, and how particularly, the politics of appeasement has made the country far more vulnerable than imaginable. Preventing the country from imploding so dangerously, on so many fronts, as is currently the case, should be considered a matter of urgent national importance. www.reubenabati.com.ng/2016-05-22-The-Niger-Delta-Avengers-By-Reuben-Abati.html 2 Likes |

It's very commendable that good heated Niger Deltans have been calling press conference and speaking out to condemn the evil works of these saboteurs. I hope it's not tongue-in-cheek anyway. Whatever, it's a good thing. |

I read all through the story and I didn't see where he used anything close to what the headline reads. But what if he even said so? The president urged aggrieved persons, militants and communities in the Niger Delta to drop their confrontational stance and work with those who have been charged by the Federal Government to review the Amnesty Programme initiated by the Yar’Adua Administration for the benefit of all parties. I advise the militants to sheath their swords because I'm sure they'll not be successful to bring the nation to its knees. They seem to think they're unconquerable - black lie! 29 Likes 3 Shares |

Your questions are totally out of place considering the fact that the state of education in the northern part of Nigeria is very low as we all know. Those asking why the girl "cannot" speak English, how can you prove that assertion. The girl has been through 2 years of all sort of trauma, that might be a contributing factor. When she get herself properly back, we'll know better. |

Doyin Okupe, the erstwhile Senior Special Assistant to former President Goodluck Jonathan on Wednesday, May 18, 2016 appeared as the third defence witness (DW3) for Olisa Metuh, the embattled national spokesperson of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP who is standing trial over his alleged role in the infamous $2.1 billion arms deal involving the former National Security Adviser, NSA, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd). Metuh is being prosecuted alongside his company, Destra Investment Limited, on a 7-count charge before Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court, Abuja by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC. He is accused of allegedly receiving N400 million (four hundred million naira) from former NSA, Col. Dasuki (retd). At the resumed sitting today, Okupe while being led in evidence by Metuh’s counsel, Onyechi Ikpeazu, SAN, narrated how he was part of the meeting in which Metuh made a presentation on what could be done to launder the image of the then president and that of the PDP. “After the meeting, the president said he will make a directive for Metuh to be mobilised with funds to carry out the project. The next day, Metuh called me to tell me that his account had been credited with N400m,” Okupe said. Under cross examination by counsel to EFCC, Sylvanus Tahir, Okupe, admitted that, government institutions and agencies are not part of the organs of the party. When shown one of the exhibits (e-payment mandate) from the Office of the NSA, detailing the transfer of the sum N400m to Destra Investment Limited, Okupe claimed he does not understand the document neither does he know what it is all about. Thereafter, Ikpeazu sought for an adjournment on the grounds that Metuh has a health challenge. Consequently, Justice Abang adjourned to May 19, 2016 for continuation of defence. www.saharareporters.com/2016/05/18/armsgate-metuh-was-paid-n400m-okupe

A group of former militants declared yesterday there will never be a Niger Delta Republic as proposed by the Niger Delta Avengers (NDA). The ex-militants also urged the NDA to stop hiding and come out publicly with its identity. The NDA, in a statement by its spokesman, Col. Murdoch Agbinibo, had declared that the group would, on October 16, launch its flag, currency, ruling council and territory of control, distinct from Nigeria, However, the group of former militants, under the aegis of the defunct Niger Delta Liberation Force (NDLF) warned that it would fight any attempt to plunge the region into crisis by the action of the NDA. NDLF, in a statement by its spokesman, Captain Mark Anthony, described the action of the NDA as “selfish and wicked” because its sponsors no longer have access to juicy contracts from the Federal Government. It urged the Nigerian military to go after the NDA and bring them to book before they trigger crisis in the Niger Delta region. “We want to distance ourselves from the proposed declaration of Niger Delta Republic and flag off of Niger Delta currency by Niger Delta Avengers.. NDLF is not aware of such plan and will not support such calls to secede from Nigeria. Our son, former president Goodluck Jonathan just left office and you enjoyed juicy contracts from his administration. Today, you want all of us to fight President Muhammadu Buhari because it is no longer business as usual. You want to declare Niger Delta Republic. You and your ragtag army cannot fool us every day in Niger Delta. www.sunnewsonline.com/therell-never-be-niger-delta-republic-ex-militants-tell-avengers/ |

But don't forget that Qatar for an example, has a population of less than 2 million people, Saudi Arabia has less than 30 million, and Kuwait less than 4 million, etc. I'm not trying to make up excuses for Nigeria's many failures and profligacy, but these need be considered too. 6 Likes |
