Abeg why are pple mentioning macbooks here? We are talking about ordinary laptop! Macbook is in a class of its own, the rolls royce of laptops, comparing it to clunkers like toshiba and others is not fair on the others and an insult to Macs. There are just 2 kinds of laptops- Macs and the rest, Mac is number 1 and the others are not even number 2! They are number last! (dont compare a rolls royce to corolla) |
The posts on Nland, these days highlights the perilous state of our nation's education system. Most of the posts are just frightening. |
ehie:When you get down from your soapbox please google BPO and find out what it means. You think when you walk into a bank the cashier that attends to you works with the bank? And the driver? Oh and what about all the cleaners security men and secretaries? In the past companies used to have all these roles as core staff and they discovered that they are not really core to their operations so they started outsourcing. If you live in the US and call a help line for most companies the call agent is likely in India or some other country. If you want to demonise Airtel then lets shut down all the banks, oil companies etc who outsource. A little knowledge is a dangerous thing |
My worry is the way our journalists failed to report the facts, indeed if Airtel truly has up to 3,000 staff then it would be out of business by now. Indians are the best at BPO and we should pray they expand the business and create more jobs. With the new undersea cables we may attract some BPO work from other countries. They need commendation not condemnation. |
Before we crucify the police, what time did they get the information about the robbery? They are not spirits you know, lets all get used to calling the emergency number 767. It works, I've reported a robbery through that number and the police arrived at the scene in minutes. Perhaps if just one resident had phoned the robbery would have been foiled. |
^^ Thanks for responding to that nonsensical suggestion. How many of us actually understand how this subsidy works? The thing has become one of the most corrupt areas in this economy. For those suggesting that refining capacity should before removing subsidy-its upside down logic. NO private business man will invest in refining while prices are regulated. Deregulation is a prerequisite for attracting investment in the downstream sector. Lets face the reality. |
LOUD silence from Nlanders, if na Nigerian University or a Nigerian is involved you guys would have been queuing up to bash the country and some will even link it to GEJ. |
COMPAQ:If you are a drinking man I would have bought you TWO cold ones, most of us just adopt cliches and kneejerk responses. |
The man deserves all the praise and accolades. He went into the real sector when no nigerian would touch it. The man went from importing finished goods to bulk importation and packing to manufacturing, steadily moving up the value chain, other "monopolists" have not gone on to add any value. He is one of the largest employers in the country and is gradually evolving into a pan african business man. Abeg the man try, I wonder which evil he has committed, perhaps his accusers would care to list specific sins. If you think any sane business man will sit by and allow competitors to steal his lunch then you better stick to collecting you salary and never try business, its war! Make una leave this belus for the guy abeg. |
Loud silence on this matter, nothing to criticize? Na wa for Nigerians we rejoice over negative things and not the good, it shows how bitter and hopeless most of us have become. Congrats SLS! |
Now we are seeing the effects of mass failure in English in WAEC exams, this is supposed to be a straight forward case but some of us either cannot understand or do not want to understand (frankly I don't know which is worse) How anyone in their right minds can pin this on the government is beyond me and I can't even attempt to reason with them (its pointless, they either CANT understand or WONT understand) Beaf save your energy please, Nigeria Bashing has become a national pastime, people are just pretending they have lost faith in the government or leaders while in fact they have lost faith in themselves. Beaf i don't always agree with you but I support you in this case, my only advise to you is that if you stop to kick at every dog that barks at you, you wont get to your destination. |
igbo2011:why did the other auto companies fail? If we can answer that question then this conversation will move fwd. The factors that led to their demise have not been addressed so any new plant will eventually end up like them. Manufacturing locally became unprofitable, and No matter how patriotic Innosons is, it will eventually go the same way. I don't know how you arrived at the figure of N160b, maybe you work there and have seen the business plan but FG is moving AWAY from Investing in businesses so that idea is a nonstarter. Your idea on car companies resurrecting the steel sector is flawed as it works the other way round. Availability of raw materials determines location of businesses, we learnt that the hard way with ALSCON and Delta Steel, Innosons may also learn that the hard way. For any business model to remain in the Long term depends on the viability of the business model, if it is not viable or becomes obsolete then its as good as dead, that's a simple economic fact. For example at one time owning a business center / cybercafe was a great business but they are now going obsolete because fast, cheap internet, mobile phones and crashing prices of computers have put them to the sword. Travel Agents are feeling the heat because people can now book trips and pay online, the list goes on. No amount of money can correct a flawed business model , boo.com took off with $150million but quickly became boo-hoo because the model was thoroughly useless. If innosons' model is flawed or it mistimes market entry, economic forces will quickly euthanize the business and no amount of govt support can save it. Lets not forget the small issue of DEMAND, do Nigerians want a made in Nigeria car? That question has to be answered. Like i said before- No economies of scale so they cant compete on price, demand issues, dead steel industry all equals low to no comparative advantage. Well what do i Know? They may beat all this and be our own TATA or Honda(I hope they do) getting to where they are now is a tremendous achievement in itself. sorry for the long post guys |
Type3:O boy u must be british! your comment on the things that have been happening on this thread is the understatement of the year! Its killing me, I don laugh die. |
^^ Who made the announcement? was it FG or the president of HHI? Abeg read the Reuters report again before you comment further. HHI declared their INTENT to the press, FG expressed appreciation for the development another HHI official says not so! And you blame FG? So you want FG to warn all investors: dont announce anything until we have signed mou. This information ORIGINATED from the PRESIDENT of HHI, lets not force the matter to look like FG goofed. If a reputable business man comes to my office and says he wants to invest and goes ahead to announce to the press I will reciprocate by saying i welcome the announcement (if i want the investment) if the same man later says the statement was a mistake how does that show incompetence on my part? How is that my fault? |
@ kulutempa, official incompetence from who? If you are the president and i come to inform you that I PLAN to invest money in your country what will you say? "oh lets wait and see" is that what you will say? You will welcome the PLAN for what its worth, how is that incompetent? Press releases are routine for such visits and Reuters quoted the president of HHI himself. The state house website is merely posting the president's REACTION. Even if the president is skeptical he wont say it to them. HHI must be suffering a communication gap. Presidency has no blame in this matter. |
Na Berom man! what a nonesensical thread!what has dat got to do with the price of tea in china? |
Hyundai Heavy to build $7 bln shipyard in Nigeria Thu Sep 15, 2011 6:08pm GMT Print | Single Page [-] Text [+] 1 of 1Full Size ABUJA (Reuters) - South Korean group Hyundai Heavy Industries plans to build a $7 billion shipyard in Nigeria's oil region next year, the company's president said on Thursday. The world's largest shipbuilder said while construction on the project would begin in 2012, it had already begun clearing the land in Bayelsa, the home state of President Goodluck Jonathan in the heart of the oil-rich Niger Delta wetlands. "My company is going to $7 billion in Nigeria in the building of a shipyard," Jai-Seong Lee told reporters at the presidential villa following a meeting with Jonathan. Lee said the first phase would be completed by 2014. The shipyard will provide services to oil companies operating in Africa's largest energy industry. The Bayelsa state governor said the government would not invest in the project but it had given Hyundai the land and would build a road to the shipyard. "For us, the gain is in the jobs they are going to create and the taxes they will be paying to us when they commence operating the shipyard after completion," said Timipre Sylva. Please show where it mentions FG or the President saying ANYTHING from the above? Who is the SOURCE of this story? The president of HHI was quoted by reuters and the publicity man comes out to deny the statement. They should sort themselves out, this has nothing to do with the Nigerian president. Bandwagon posters who pound their keyboards without reading the OP should be guided. |
daguru:You guys seem to be in such a hurry to condemn the president, have read the ORIGINAL STORY? read and point out ONE sentence that showed GEJ making ANY comment. Its HHI that should be red faced not Nigerian Government. http://af.reuters.com/article/investingNews/idAFJOE78E0LU20110915 |
^^ Before you start your victory dance read the above report again- its the Koreans that are giving conflicting signals Not the fault of FG. If the president of a company declares a planned investment do you expect our president to say "na lie"? Let HHI sort themselves out and declare the true position. THEY should be embarrassed and not the nigerian govt. |
^^ Thats was pre meltdown bros, now there are highly qualified guys with same foreign degree AND experience who are jobless especially in finance and banking, there is no oyster, no deceive the poor guy abeg. |
UK govt negotiated with IRA, Spanish Govt negotiated with ETA, Moroccan govt negotiated with western sahara rebels, US govt negotiated with Moqtada Al Sadr (and it agrees it was a mistake to disband the iraqi army and baath party instead of striking a deal after saddam's ouster) Israel is negotiating with the PLO, US is negotiating with the Taliban (forget all the denials). My only prob with BH is this- what is their position, what do they want? Let's hear it from them (if they are organised and they truly exist). |
Beaf abeg dont bring yourself to this guy's level, just ignore his insults. |
Beaf's post is from Reuters a respected news service, the post on oyibosonline has no link to any credible news source. Who shd we believe? Reuters or an unknown webpage? |
BG wont do it for this kind of transaction, except you want to lease the boat rather than buy one (leasing coy MAY demand a BG) You may consider a lease arrangement instead of outright purchase. (dis man is enjoying free consultancy )But honestly bros if you are really in shipping as you claim you should have a good financial adviser on your payroll or on consultancy basis. Nland wont cut it. |
^^ and they are asking for govt help? How much does it cost to reply an email? Shows they have not gotten their marketing right which is key. But production of 1000 vehicles will not give them the scale to compete on price. The indian manufacturers will create thousands of jobs which is what the economy needs right now, I think Aganga is doing his job he is the minister for trade and investment- this means private sector investments, both foreign and local and not govt money going to private enterprises. Personally i dont think we have comparative advantage in vehicle manufacturing, we dont have a steel industry so how would that work? |
Na wa o! Una still dey argue? This has degenerated into a proper D.!ck measuring contest. Clash of the titans-ajanlekoko v seafago v mitofag v sagamite v everyother pesin, this na royal rumble! Lemme get ma popcorn and lager. |
una no hear the name of the station? the BEAT FM. Maybe they should have called it the BEAT UP FM! |
A lot of us are just pretending we have lost faith in the Govt while in truth we have lost faith in ourselves. I wonder how many pple on this forum actually know anything about rail transport. You think laying rail tracks is like digging soak away pit? It takes time and money. Someone went as far as saying they shd give us power instead of rail (alarming to hear such comments) If you read carefully it was the minister of TRANSPORT that spoke, you don't expect him to tell you about power, that's not his portfolio. Keyboard experts make una leave us o |
This is clearly a dialogue of the deaf. I think the journey of life is too complicated to be reduced to educational qualification (after all many did NOT attend school at all) I think the whole matter should boil down to ONE word- PERFORMANCE. If you can perform on the job at first class level then you are first class but if you can't then you are rubbish regardless of your paper. I remember when I got my first job in a Nigerian financial institution, the welcome speech at the training school was simple: "thank you all for being here we hope you stay long but we don't tolerate non-performers" And that for me is the crux of the matter, boasting about paper is short sighted, its performance that counts, value addition. Lets all strive to become people who add value, talking about our 2.1 and 2.2 and 1.1 is just ancient history, we are talking of current affairs, what can you DELIVER. Me am more of a business person so talk of degrees often amuse me, I have NEVER gone for a business meeting where am asked my degree or qualification, its always one question- What can you DELIVER? And i think that's the question we should all be asking ourselves and others what can we deliver, what value can we add in all spheres of life not just on the job? |
2.2 is not the end of life my people, its your attitude that defines how far you will go. I have a 2.2 but I can say thank God I have not done badly. First degree doesn't define your life (life is NOT that simple) its just one step in a very long journey called life. Employers are slowly realizing that good grades does not necessarily equal good performance on the job. A recruiter told me recently that "we employ attitude and train for skills and competence" He works with a large multinational organisation. So keep your heads up and get down to business. Grades MAY get you through the door but attitude and competence keeps you in the job. If am to employ, I would take a 2.2 with track record than a 2.1 or 1st class with no record, even with the popular "foreign degree" |
Abeg I no go school, what does liveable city mean? When pple wan lie na grammar dem go begin blow. |
I have observed that anytime ANY kind of achievement or progress by Nigeria and Nigerians is mentioned, the most vitriolic and aggressive criticisms come from Nigerians, cynicism, Nigeria Bashing and pessimism has become a national sport. The reason I think is because most of us have lost hope and self confidence. We bash, downplay, scorn and insult any goodnews not just because some have lost hope in the country, no thats not the reason, most have lost hope and confidence in THEMSELVES! They believe if everyone else fails then their lack of self-confidence would be ok, it would be a case of "no be only me" a typical PHDsyndrome This quite unfortunate, we have become a nation of whiners and lazy people with an excuse for every individual failing- its the government its this its that! always someone else! When others do well we try to drag them down to our level of hopelessness and despair! If you listen to our conversations what we hear is: if to say light dey, if to say road dey, if only there was no corruption if only one thing or the other! meanwhile people who are aggressively DOING are getting ahead. I weep for the Nigerian youth who has reduced himself to waiting on the government and blaming every man and his dog for his plight. Lets regain our SELFCONFIDENCE (thats the REAL SWAGGA) This negativity MUST STOP. BEAF may not always say things we agree with but by GOD the man has a positive outlook! That's the can do attitude we need! |
