I hope you guys know why I was interested in the Yoruba and/or Ibo worshiping the object, the creation, the sun, as a god. It is because of the seemingly apparent relationship of flat-earthers with sun worshiping. FOLYKAZE, I wonder if in the Yorubas and/or Igbo mythology, they are flat-earthers. Have you anything on this?

OK yeah, the "a Jewish day begins and ends at sundown, as in, the time in the evening when the sun disappears or daylight fades" bit you emboldened is uncontestable. Look at the screenshot carefully now.
missjo:
Everything you have contributed is noted sir.

I just have one question regarding the text in bold.
Who saw or observed the exact hour Jesus awakened from the sleep state inside the tomb?
"1After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb.
2Suddenly there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven, rolled away the stone, and sat on it.
3His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow.
4The guards trembled in fear of him and became like dead men.
5But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified.
6He is not here; He has risen, just as He said! Come, see the place where He lay
"
- Matthew 28:1-6

The ministering angelic host from heaven, the angel, saw or observed the exact hour Jesus awakened from the sleep state inside the tomb. The angel even told the women Jesus has risen, after 3 days and 3 nights, just as He said He would. No one including the guards could see anything happening inside because of the heavy stone rolled against the tomb entrance

budaatum:
Yoruba religion did not rely on going directly to Olorun (Lord of Heaven and all that's in it)), as we had more immediate practical things to take to our practical earth living (sub-)gods to solve. The sun will not stop lions eating you, though it was recognized for putting food in your belly if properly 'worshipped'. Ultimate glory for everything however was to Olorun who is the God of everything, including the sun, even when you went through gods of iron or smallpox to acknowledge that fact. Its like going through a pastor today to get to God. Some things just remain the same.
Again budaatum, I get all that, I get that God, is the God of everything, including the God over the river others worshiped, the rocks they worshiped, the cave they worshiped, the trees they worshiped, but my observation is that from the Egyptians, to the Greeks, the Hindu Indians, the Mayas of Mexico and Central America, the Incas or South American Indians of the Andes region, the Japanese, these lot worshipped the Sun directly but I am not aware the sun ever being directly worshiped in SW, SS SE SSE Naija

FOLYKAZE:
Muttley, Obatala is the deity of light, that covers everything that illuminate, including the sun.
I get that Obatala is the deity of light, that covers everything that illuminate, including the sun, but I am talking of the sun being the object of worship as done by others like the he Egyptians, to the Greeks, the Hindu Indians, the Mayas of Mexico and Central America, the Incas or South American Indians of the Andes region, the Japanese, etcetera. The Yoruba or Ibo, must have known something for not joining the bandwagon that took fancy to worshiping an object of creation, the Sun, so I thought.

Then, my interest, concerning an apparent absence of Africans taking the sun, a created object to be worshiped, I stumbled upon the Fon people, the west african ethnic group from Dahomey, who worshiped Mawu-Lisa, an androgynous deity made up of Mawu, that's female and Lisa, that's male. Mawu-Lisa is told of as one person with two faces. One face, the face of Mawu, is that of a woman whose eyes are the Moon while the other face, the face of Lisa, is that of a man whose eyes are the Sun. The Fon people have affiliation with the Yoruba, they are somehow connected with the Yoruba, as apparently where Mawu means god, Lisa is a derivative word taken from the Yoruba orisa

FOLYKAZE, it might interest you to know that the name Lisa among the Fon appears to have been derived from us, their neighbour, nearby Yoruba people, who use the word oriṣa to refer to lesser deities. The Fon people, apparently see Lisa, as an analogue, of the Yoruba god or oriṣa, Ọbatala, who is at various times, described as the twin brother, husband or son of Mawu. Interesting eh? lol. So I guess that satisfies my curiosity. The Yoruba and/or Ibo, didnt miss the boat, the sun is directly worshiped as an object by them, they accomplished this through the Fon people, with their worship of Mawu-Lisa, the lunar-aligned creatrix sun god.

Muttley why are you counting the period of Jesus hanging on the cross as part of the days and nights?

The prophesies do clearly state ... in the grave for three days and three nights.
https://reasonsforhopejesus.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/thurs-3-days-chart.jpg

missjo, it is because Jesus was on the cross by 9:00am, died by 3:00pm Thursday day and was buried on same Thursday day before sundown, thats to fulfil the prophecy that clearly stated "... in the grave for three days and three nights" Also missjo, remember that, a Jewish day begins and ends at sundown, as in, the time in the evening when the sun disappears or daylight fades.

... it's been a minute since I contributed to religious discussions here but please allow me to share what I have studied on this. The topic of the death & resurrection is of great interest to me. smiley

First of all, the answer to your question is an emphatic YES, the prophesy of three mornings(daylight) and three evenings(night) was fulfilled LITERALLY.

By the old Jewish system of days & nights, a new day began at sunset (6pm) instead of midnight (12am) as we observe presently.
Jesus the Christ died on a wednesday between the hours of 12noon and 3pm (Matt 27:45-56).

How can we be sure it was a Wednesday?
Because of this passage:
John 19:31 King James Version (KJV)
31 The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.

The Sabbath being referred to here does not speak of the regular Jewish Sabbath of Saturday, but rather the high day of the passover (as emphasized by John in his use of parenthesis to explain) also called a Sabbath. This "high day" was held on Thursdays.

Between 3pm and 6pm of Wednesday is the period where Joseph of Arimathea besought Pilate to release the body of Jesus to him for burial (Matthew 27:57-61). All of this could very well have taken approximately 3hours and by the time Jesus was laid in the tomb, it was already a little bit past 6pm of Wednesday.

Now if we start counting from 6pm on Wednesday (remember a new day starts at 6pm), then:
6pm Wednesday - 6pm Thursday = Day 1
6pm Thursday - 6pm Friday = Day 2
6pm Friday - 6pm Saturday = Day 3

Every day of the above is complete with 24hours of evening and morning (Note that the old testament bible records a full day by referring to it as evening and morning, never as morning and evening; another proof that a new day starts at 6pm).

The particular time and hour that Jesus arose can not be ascertained because no one witnessed it. The soldiers who kept watch outside the tomb only witnessed the earthquake and the angel rolling back the stone covering of the tomb which happened to grant Mary Magdalene and Mary mother of James, access into the sepulchre (this happened very early on Sunday morning).

John 20:1 calls it the first day of the week (Sunday) and he wrote that it was still dark (probably about 5am).
Mathew 28:1 says it in much the same way calling it the end of the Sabbath (Saturday) as it began to dawn on the first day of the week (Sunday).

As at the time these two women got there, he had already risen some time after sunset on Saturday evening without the knowledge of the soldiers outside who stood guard. As far as they were concerned, the body of Jesus was still in the tomb by the time the two Marys got there at about 5am on Sunday morning.
MuttleyLaff:
Follow below

It always has been Good Thursday nwanne.

"It was the day of preparation, and the Jewish leaders didn’t want the bodies hanging there the next day, which was the Sabbath
(and a very special Sabbath, because it was Passover week).
So they asked Pilate to hasten their deaths by ordering that their legs be broken. Then their bodies could be taken down.
"
- John 19:31

It has to be on the authority of John 19:31 above, and no, I dont need to wanna try Good Wednesday because of the fact that the Last Supper occurred on Wednesday, never a Thursday, thus Christ was, in fact, crucified on Thursday, never a Friday.

Thursday day to Thursday night: Jesus was on the cross by 9:00am, He died by 3:00pm and He was off the cross before sundown, so means, 1 day and 1 night
The Jewish day starts at sundown or nightfall of the previous evening, and continues throughout the night and following day, until the next night.
Friday morning to Friday night day: 1 day and 1 night
Saturday morning to Saturday night: 1 day and 1 night (i.e. Jesus rosed before sunrise)
Sunday morning: Resurrection morning

I'm well aware of that.
But when you love someone, you try and protect him/her right? You want folks to see that person as you see him/her.
Well, when I constantly see my Lord ridiculed, misjudged, misunderstood, mocked etc., here on this forum, it makes me want to defend Him..because I know who He really is.
I just want others to try to understand who He is also...that's all.
It is biblical to be like a child, so necessarily nothing wrong in that poster being a child in my humble opinion.

God has mastered the art of longsuffering in silence. Anybody else, these people will have been yesterday dead for their shameful behaviours.

So what, if that picture originally refers to "democracy"? Whether it refers to or doesnt refer to democracy, is irrelevant. What is relevant is its common denominator it shares with dodgy politicians and/or pastors. It portrays the picture that, it is you who gives these people (i.e. dodgy politicians and/or pastors) the power to enslave and subjugate you. It is the support you give them that keeps them in balance and/or power. Step back, one by one, away from the board plank, then wait to watch and see what happens to the dodgy politician(s) and/or pastor(s). Yes nelsonoba, the church of Christ, is government of DEMOCRACY, and according to Jesus, in Mark 10:42-43 above when talking to the discples, it is a special and/or different kind of government of DEMOCRACY. Democracy, fyi, has biblical roots that you're unaware of, lol. Life, in the beginning, started on a democratic footing, lol. Also, I am sure you've heard it said that, democracy is a government of all the people, by all the people, for all the people, abi?

"And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, a small rock and upon the large rock I will build my congregation {Gr. ekklesia – called out ones},
and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against her.
"
- Matthew 16:18

I am sure you didnt know that Jesus was interested in democracy that much that He adopted the phraseology ekklesia, taken from the first known democracy in the world, lol, the Athenian democracy.

Ekklesia, meaning, a gathering of those called out and/or summoned ones, is the principal assembly, open to all male citizens as soon as they qualified for citizenship of ancient Athens. Ekklesia is an Athenian democracy feature that allowed all Athenian citizens to come together, regardless of class and so even the lowest social class of citizens to discuss civil matters and/or participate in democratic politics. Everyone was considered equal in the ekklesia and any citizen present could participate and share his ideas, opinions, and concerns." Incidentally, what Jesus in Mark 10:42-43 above, was teaching the disciples is what Theodore Parker captured perfectly well, with the quote, that: "Democracy means not, I am as good as you are, but you are as good as I am"

nelsonoba, Jesus changed the original political meaning of ekklesia to a religious one. Praise God. Alleluia. We are talking here, of radical and liberal democracy nelsonoba, lol, and that's where Galatians 3:26-28, Acts 4:42-47 and James 1:27 took their cue from, lol.

nelsonoba, let me clear you up properly on ekklesia, lol, so you'll know what is really going on with it. Maybe, you'll learn a thing or two, and would have become wiser and wise enough to make re-adjustments, where and/or if applicable, to your theology, lol.

To start with and as a matter of fact, "ekklesia" is the proper and correct noun word for used for believers, called out and/or gathered together, which the word "church", as it is, presently or currently represents.

"Ekklesia" actually, is a Greek word, which in Athens and in most Greek poleis (i.e. Greek cities or states) means an assembly of demo
(i.e. yes, demo, is the Greek word for people, as like the "demo" in democracy) So "ekklesia" effectively, is an assembly of summoned free people or a gathering of those summoned. The word "ekklesia", is derived from "ekkletos" meaning summoned and "ekkaleom" meaning to summon or call out. "Ekkletoi" refers to the called-out inhabitants or citizens of Athens or any of the Greek poleis, come together in a single place and/or single group, as a result of a call out request done by a herald, announcer or town crier.

"Ekklesia" an assembly, congregation, the whole body of believers, come together, as a result of a call out request done by our Lord Jesus Christ and not some church or something anyone starts, because as I previously typed, ekklesia is a family we belong to.

The true meaning, import or connotation of "ekklesia" is lost or eroded when it is used or translated to/as "church", as "ekklesia" represents something totally different to what we've commonly perceived what "church" is.

"Ekklesia," as far back in the Old Testament wilderness days, has always been an assembly or congregation of called-out people (i.e. Acts 7:38 is referring to the congregation in Deuteronomy 9:10) and it's no different in the original Greek New Testament whether used in non-secular and secular settings (i.e. Matthew 16:18 and Acts 7:38 for non-secular then Acts 19:32, 39 and 41 for secular) Notice in Acts 19:32, 39 and 41, that "ekklesia" is used three times, for people not connected with religious or believers matters, but are assembling or gathering together.

So the point is that "ekklesia" isn't about physical structures, buildings, cathedrals etcetera, and the Greeks, the originators of the word, never referred "ekklesia", to be church, building or place of worship.

I am sure nelsonoba, you'll return here to say, all this etymology stuff on "ekklesia", is bunkum and time wasting, it's nitpicking over minute details, and that it's pedantic and fault-finding or you, even might say, church or ekklesia, whatever the noun used, it doesn't matter. Well if you do nelsonoba, that will be you delighting in ignorance(s), with saying, church or ekklesia, it makes no difference, that it's much ado about nothing and so what's the big deal. Fyi, I could tell you more, like about the English word "church" on its self, and about its actual pagan origins, but this is will be overstepping the scope of the thread's title heading, lol. Maybe another thread, another time or another day, lol. Again, I am not the enemy, lol.

Boy 6, Beheaded In Front Of Screaming Mum In Saudi Arabia 'For Being Wrong Religion'

The child was killed in Medina, Saudi Arabia, while visiting a shrine to the Prophet Muhammad, according to reports
By Joshua Taylor Deputy news editor
21:23, 10 FEB 2019 UPDATED 15:54, 15 FEB 2019

A six-year-old boy was beheaded in front of his screaming mum in Saudi Arabia for belonging to the wrong branch of Islam, according to reports.

The child and his mum were allegedly approached while visiting a shrine to the Prophet Muhammad in Medina and asked if they were Shia Muslims.

The mum reportedly said yes and several minutes later a car pulled up beside them and the child was snatched away from her.

The boy - named locally as Zakaria Al-Jaber - was repeatedly stabbed in the neck with a piece of broken glass until he was beheaded, it is claimed.

His helpless mum could only watch and scream as the horror unfolded.

Saudi Arabia's predominant branch of Islam is Sunni, accounting for around three quarters of the population.

Human rights groups say practitioners of other forms of the faith - including Shia - are persecuted.

The boy's mum could only watch and scream as her son was murdered

Shia Rights Watch, a Washington DC-based campaign group, said: "There was no intervention from anyone and no response from authority thus far.

"The Saudi Shia community came together in mourning and to show solidarity with the parents.

"The community also reported this incident is a result of ongoing violations and lack of protection by the Saudi authority toward its Shia population.

"Saudi Shia have been under military crackdown by their government and many Shia are in prisons and on death toll."

If this could happen among Muslims what hope do Christians have in Saudi Arabia, the most 'holy' country in Islam? undecided

Judges 13: 2-3, 5, 24 (KJV)
2 And there was a certain man of Zorah, of the family of the Danites, whose name was Manoah; and his wife was barren, and bare not

3 And the angel of the Lord appeared unto the woman, and said unto her, Behold now, thou art barren, and bearest not: but thou shalt conceive, and bear a son.

5 For, lo, thou shalt conceive, and bear a son; and no razor shall come on his head: for the child shall be a Nazarite unto God from the womb: and he shall begin to deliver Israel out of the hand of the Philistines.

24 And the woman bare a son, and called his name Samson: and the child grew, and the Lord blessed him.

Hebrews 11: 32, 34, 39-40 (KJV)
32 And what shall I more say? for the time would fail me to tell of Gedeon, and of Barak, and of Samson, and of Jephthae; of David also, and Samuel, and of the prophets:

34 Quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, waxed valiant in fight, turned to flight the armies of the aliens

39 And these all, having obtained a good report through faith, received not the promise:

40 God having provided some better thing for us, that they without us should not be made perfect.

It begins from the word "danites" which is the tribe of Dan...a Godly lineage beginning from Abraham which runs all the way to Jesus Christ.
Samson's lineage already showed that he was to be a special, Godly man.
Samson made some terrible choices, even resulting in a most horrific death, BUT there is no doubt that he was a Godly man and ultimately fulfilled his God ordained calling. Because a Christian may fall, does not mean that he/she was never a Godly person.
Confession, forgiveness, and repentance is what makes the difference.
Who now, is the real biblical "guru" fa, lol. Here the laurel wreath and crown for Eviana, the undisputed heavyweight biblical "guru" lol

Eviana:
Don't know if that is the "main" lesson, but I'll definitely agree about our crucial need to guard against the "trio" for sure.
On hindsight and after just now, giving your "don't know if that is the "main" lesson" some more thought and/or deeper consideration, I have come to a reviewed conclusion, that one out of the possible main lessons in the Samson story, is that inspite of our imperfections, many shortcomings and/or weaknesses, God often still finds us useful and so within whats permissible, will make use of us. This means, dont be too hard on yourself, dont be saying I am not perfect. Dont be thinking that, I am not there yet so God is not interested in me and so, wont use me. We are not created or born perfect, and that's for many reasons. We actually, are created to be real to our nature, and born to be real to ourselves. Besides, there is power in imperfection. Its as I previously have said, God's power is perfected in weakness things going on there, lol. For God Himself, in 2 Corinthians 12:9 said: "My power is strongest when you are weak"

The heading, Samson and Delilah, sums up the story of a conquered, captive, strong, weak man later become a broken and contrite man triumphant, even as when caught up in the tragic drama that ended his life.

Would you imagine, small time now, blueAgent will say OP isnt read. blueAgent fyi, at 7:38pm On Nov 17, you claimed the spirit is the mind, will, thought, zeal, imagination. Now, today, at 7:13pm, you say "soul comes to life which is their thoughts, mind physce, perception." You typed "there" but we know you meant "their" hence the edit, done on your behalf. OK, back on track, this is what happens when you dont know or dont want to make your own cheese. You are lazy, and that's how or why you get caught in, mixing up different bottles of cow milk. Your copying and pasting, word for word, from websites online betrays a lack of power to form thoughts in your head. You gulp down hook, line and sinker other peoples work and even have the audacity to present them here withouting crediting the authors. It is when you now want to express the thoughts, ideology, theology, concept etcetera that you trip over you own shoelaces because you never in the first place, gave any of the thoughts, ideology, theology, concept etcetera your own insightful thinking, in the first instance

Oga MuttleyLaff, Petra1 has said the exact same thing I believe. I believe the body of Christ is not perfect and people will always make mistakes as such. I believe that the fact that the body of Christ is prone to mistake does not mean we should condone and encourage such mistakes to continue. I also believe there is order in the body of Christ (which the bible describes as an army) just as there is order in any military force, and in the military, when officers are, there are procedures to deal with them which we know as a court-martial. You don't just go about as a civilian looking for Colonels and Generals that have broken the law for you to discipline them. If you try it, you will have problem, but if another senior General constitutes a court-martial to deal with the same erring officers, things will be addressed adequately without more problems.
Also, you can't use because of the mistakes and errors of 70% of people who are pastors to now condemn all pastors and be saying all pastors are evil or fraudsters. If you haven't met genuine pastors in your life before, I HAVE MET MANY MYSELF! I have also met fraudulent pastors and to even shock you, I have been defrauded in the past by some people who claimed to be "pastors". So don't think I am saying what I am saying because I haven't seen bad pastors before and I am naive. Now, I know better to not just trust people simply because they claim to be pastors, but because of the character I see in them.......just as Jesus said, "by their fruits, you shall know them".

The sad story of a man who fell into the arms of a strange woman.

"1One day Samson went down to Timnah, where he saw a young Philistine woman.
2So he returned and told his father and his mother, “I have seen a daughter of the Philistines in Timnah. Now get her for me as a wife.”
3But his father and mother replied, “Can’t you find a young woman among your relatives or among any of our people? Must you go to the uncircumcised Philistines to get a wife?”
But Samson told his father, “Get her for me, for she is pleasing to my eyes.
"
- Judges 14:1-3

The strange story of a determined man, who always had a strong and/or habitual liking for strange women. He open eyed, walked directly into a ditch because of the last of the strange women.
HedwigesMaduro:
You skipped the part where it was stated that it was God that was pushing him in that direction.
MuttleyLaff:
God did not push him into the direction and/or warm embrace of Delilah
HedwigesMaduro:
So, Delilah was the first strange woman he went after? Read Judges 14:1-4.
I have just in the above, reproduced those quotes to show the entire thread of the iteraction that got going on between MuttleyLaff and HedwigesMaduro

I am 110% unmistaken that God did not push Samson into the direction and/or warm embrace of Delilah. This is the reason why I wasnt bothered responding to the last comment HedwigesMaduro made. I missed not "his" post ... as Eviana thought and wrongly concluded. It actually was a case of, I deliberately ignored that HedwigesMaduro comment because I previously had said, Samson is a determined man, who always had a strong and/or habitual liking for strange women. Besides, not all strange women are bad, crooked, bent and/or up to dirty tricks? I earlier did hint with "... your people will be my people and your God, my God ..." which is about Ruth, and after reading that HedwigesMaduro comment and because of an Eviana comment about foreign women or something like that. Afterall, was Ruth not a strange woman too ni?

"Strange woman" are not words you can attribute to me. It was HedwigesMadlol. who introduced that wording to the thread, so you're better off asking him and not me about the strange woman

I think he even propsed reading a few scripture passages.

You brought attention on yourself, when your mask slightly slipped to reveal who and what you really are, lol

God knows Samson wouldnt be capable to withstand Delilah's rugged determination and he wouldn't be able to nor manage to withhold revealing his secret to her, so why it wasn't a God idea to associate him with a woman especially like Delilah.

Hence the thousands of denominations...

We understand scripture to the level of our submission to the Spirit of Truth. We understand scripture to how much we fill out to snuggly fit into the gift of the given Holy Spirit. We understand scripture according to the altitude of our vantage points and the level/angle/direction/line of our perspective. Those two pictures I pasted above, are worth more than twenty thousand words, lol.
