WebmastersRe: Cnn Goes Fluid On The Home Page by my2cents(op): 3:11pm On Jul 27, 2006
Oops, it seems that CNN isnt going for the fluidity anymore. As of the time of this writing, they reverted to the original format.

As for ajax, timmy, I have been reserving my comments on this but how do you know ajax was used? I mean, I click on something and it takes me to a totally different page. There are no same-page refreshes that I saw, unless I missed it. If so, pls share with us smiley

All I saw was an expanded site with less images and more css (though the view source shows embedded within tables still).

If u suspect ajax dey (which I am not saying isn't), oya share with us pls cool
PoliticsRe: Past Rulers Coming To Rule Us Again In 2007? by my2cents(m): 4:13am On Jul 27, 2006
Hell no. If it were left to me, I would deal with them Rawlings-style: Public execution.

It's about time the young get to grow in that place.
EducationRe: Why Is It Hard To Gain Admission To University Here In Nigeria? by my2cents(m): 4:10am On Jul 27, 2006
Answer is simple - too many students competing for fewer schools. Result? Schools boost their admission scores to weed out pple and of course, in true naija style, bribery is the norm as well.

How to overcome? Allow more private schools, sell off govt schools to the private sector. Competition will ensue and I bet the status quo will return.

as always, my 2 cents
SportsRe: What Is Football Turning To? by my2cents(m): 4:07am On Jul 27, 2006
In the past, pple played any sport whatsoever purely for the love of it. In fact, I think remember reading that back in the day, it wasnt uncommon for a player of any sport to revert to his regular job after a match.

Someone somewhere discovered the money potential and as capitalism dictates, the higher the demand, the higher the price. Either you sign a player and reap the benefits from TV rights to Tshirts to Higher attendance or someone else will.

England seems to fork out the most for the same reason the NBA or NFL does same in the states - economic freedom. Remove the fear of being investigated for the source of your wealth and the money will surely flow. Do you think Abramovich would be flashing around big bucks in Russia? I think not.

As always, my 2 cents.
BusinessRe: Is The Nigerian Market Untapped Or Difficult To Tap From? by my2cents(m): 4:02am On Jul 27, 2006
The Naija market to me is highly untapped. The ones that are tapped need a little refining to be better, thatz all. The problem with doing biz there is that:

1) You need major pepper to establish big time

2) You have to deal with potential bad belle

3) Loans are hard to come by and when available, conditions are "one in town (like pay 50% within 30 days and the rest over 3 months)"

4) You better be there to run it yourself cos if you aren't, you might as well assume you are the UN cos you won't see a penny of your money.

From recent visits, it's getting better sha, especially in the IT sector. As I tell pple here and there, the time to jump in to the biz market in naija is now. I personally expect a big boom once there is a successful handing over of power on 2007, emphasis on "successful". Political instability has denied us of major Foreign Direct Investments (FDI).

Thatz my 2 cents.
PoliticsRe: Don Etiebet's Guber Interest- A Shame Or Glory by my2cents(m): 3:58am On Jul 27, 2006
LOL dearie,

Wanna hear something totally funny and out of this world? There are at least 20 pple running for governor under PDP in Akwa Ibom state for next year. what's more? Most are fronted by one of the 3 brothers of the Etiebet clan, one being a nephew of theirs shocked shocked

Absolute power corrupts absolutely. When he was minister, he personally prevented the FG from establishing a refinery in Akwa Ibom state and now he wants to be governor. We go c sha.

Na ya wa go bust for that state o!
PoliticsRe: How Would You Rate Kofi Annan's Job Performance? by my2cents(m): 3:52am On Jul 27, 2006
The guy is unfortunately caught b/w a rock and a hard place. He is damned if he does and damned if he doesn't. He is just the figurehead of an organization that is waiting for someone bold enough to call for its demise. The US set a precedent prior to attacking Iraq. Now Israel is doing the same thing (not to say it shouldn't defend itself, but that is another matter wink). Now, no African nation can claim that an African has never been a UN chief.

So as far as his performance? i would say he isn't performing. That is if you want to exclude all the scandals that have occurred while he has been in power, Oil for food for one.

Thatz how I see it anyways.
BusinessRe: Between The Telecomms And Agric. Sector! by my2cents(m): 3:40am On Jul 27, 2006
I have this conversation with bobos back in naija all the time. I will say that IT in general is more lucrative in the short-term. Long-term however is another story. At the end of the day, nigerians must to chop eba for example. how much for one cup now? We think that working a blue-collar job is beneath us and as such leave them in favor of white-collar jobs, regardless of pay. Lines like "Ol' boy, I be banka o" are very common to hear when I visit. Forget that the "banka" is what we call in the states a teller - someone who dispenses money to customers LOL.

bottomline, as a human, we can go without phones, without the internet, without buying new clothes or moving to a new house. However, we cannot go without food. Think of it this way - if Agric weren't lucrative, what are all those white guys who left Zimbabwe doing in kwara?

My 2 cents as always smiley
HealthRe: A Cure For Malaria? by my2cents(m): 3:31am On Jul 27, 2006
Cure for malaria range from the extreme (DDT application - tried in India but it was later discovered that the population of rats increased. Turns out the mosquitoes also helped kill off rats. Thus there was an imbalance of nature and mosquitos had to be imported from Africa to restore the balance shocked), to the mild (Fansidar, injections, etc).

I read in some magazine a week ago that since malaria is endemic to sub-saharan africa in particular, the best that can be done is based on an experiment presently carried out in Mozambique - note the weather conditions prior to a major outbreak. That way, when the weather pattern repeats itself, more drugs can be readily available.

Sorry folks, but as the magazine also said, at any given time, there is at least 1 person carrying the malaria parasite in them, so a total cure isn't possible. I do think though that a cure is out there but cos these pharmaceuticals are making a killing off of us, such a cure will not be pursued grin

Have any of you been to www.cnn.com lately? They have gone totally fluid on their home page! Now the site occupies the whole screen. There's also more divs as opposed to tables on there too cool

Of course, I clicked on a link to see how it applied to other pages and those were still left-aligned. Oh well, u gotta start somewhere grin

BusinessNigerians Abroad Remit $5bn Annually by my2cents(op): 3:30pm On Jul 26, 2006
What A Shame!

A report from www.independentngonline.com/news/44/ARTICLE/7596/2006-07-26.html states that those abroad send $5billion annually thus, "boosting the country’s domestic economy substantially." Though not as much as the Mexicans ($15billion), it is still a lot of money.

Is it just me, or is there something wrong with this picture? Are those of us in the diaspora responsible for boosting the domestic economy of Nigeria? When the likes of OBJ sees this, what will be the motivation to do what he took an oath to do? Why make moves towards improving education when Aunty Ijeoma will be sending Sunny money via western union?

Again, is it just me or am I all alone here as the author of the "Musings of a mad man" series? grin

WebmastersRe: Website Review by my2cents(op): 5:33pm On Jul 25, 2006
Rotimi:
Based on our YIms from yesterday, I know this is a personal witch hunt. Then again, I knew you would do this. At least unlike *some pple*, I have the guts to post what I have done for review. By the way, not to punch any lower, but your site http://www.covenantuniversity.com/ isn't all that and a bag of chips either: for one, the content is cluttered and u abuse the use of images. I guess you're trying to show off your skills. Oh well. Back to the matter at hand (In general, my stuff may be bland, but it goes with what is the norm now - simple, yet elegant). I will ignore your grammatical errors for now cool:

1. you tittle says "Home page | Akwa Ibom, " Home Page what, who care if it the kitchen page, why not just simply welcome them, it sounds like Shocked,
>Standard practice in the states amigo. I just borrowed from the best practices I use at work. There are many ways to skin a cat. Use what works for you.

2. " News/Articles | Calendar of Events " the styles are not like others, its already showing the vlink styles, when i havnt even visited the pages (very immature)
>Stop cheating - they are showing visited because you were there yesterday (from our chats). I have your IP logged from yesterday's visit. I bet they weren't like that yesterday.

3. Even though you used a template method to duplicate pages, i guess the contents of the contact page is too short to have a bookmark [back to the top] on it. Huh
> Of course it is. Based on research (yes, a lot of what I say/do isn't based on which way the wind is blowing but on facts. I am fortunate to work for a place where they spend massive money on training their people), most people still use 800X600 resolution. If u switch urs to that resolution, I bet you won't see it.

4. Your banner sucks
>as discussed yesterday on YIM, yeah I know. U r preaching to the choir here. But again remember, the client didn't have something in mind and asked me, in spite of my protests, to go with something he found on the back of a magazine. I told you I don't do graphics/flash on purpose because from personal experience, naijans everywhere want the most done for them with the least amount of money. I am very capitalistic (call me satan grin) and will only do as much as the money you pay me goes. Sorry.

5. for some unknown reasons, i feel you don't know how to customize you anchor tags at active state <a> because the blue looks to me as my browser default for active links, when i changed my default link color in my browser, its affected you active links, lets wonder why, (you got bad css problems ?, i could send you links Tongue)
> nah, a:link, a:visited, etc. I know all that. I need a specific example. You need to show it to me. I have always stuck with the default colors for everything. If you are fond of changing your browser settings (y i suspect it is part of your witch hunt, I don't know tongue), too bad. I will change it for someone else, but not for u.

6. Your text sizes arent consistent, considering the fact that your breadcrumbs are way smaller than your body texts
> Again bro, industry standard. U don't want it to make it as prominent or more prominent than your main content. I doubt the sizes are consistent. If u look at the source, u will see that I have a style for different things. So the main content is all the same, so r the headers, etc.

7. Just laff at my comments Grin
>I won't. I still think its part of a witch hunt, but am open to them. Don't playa hate (funny how you're in naija and yet use more american lingo than I do who has been in the US since 1993. What does that say about u?). Just send me stuff that is worthy of your calibre, not nit-picking type stuff.

WebmastersRe: Is The Web Design Business Lucrative? by my2cents(m): 4:41pm On Jul 25, 2006
Rotimi:
The best part of ur post wink
My advice is that you start with freelancing for a while, get better and then blow big, You must start to crawl before you run, else yould fall. No matter how much ad's you make, or support you get,
The others? Highly subjective in my opinion. Advice is to be taken, not accepted as rule of law. If he doesn't have the resources to advertise (and I don't think he has addressed this thus far, so don't speak for him/her), let him say so himself.

Again, don't speak for others where they can speak for themselves.

Just visited the site. Kudos on mustering the courage and motivation to do your personal site. I can tell u firsthand that I hvnt the slightest motivation to start mine grin

I noticed that some of the links in the top nav were blinking, so that got me curious and I clicked them all. They all point to "page cannot be found". Y not either remove the blinking/links to those pages or remove those links altogether? If I were to base my experience with clicking only those links, I would probably say to myself that the site is still under construction and more likely than not, stop visiting cool

Other than that, kudos once again!
WebmastersRe: Is The Web Design Business Lucrative? by my2cents(m): 3:51pm On Jul 25, 2006
Business is in itself a risk. Some win and others lose. Just cos it didnt work for u doesn't mean it won't work for someone else and vice-versa.

Any good biz, in my opinion is hard work. u will probably put in more hours than if you worked for someone else. Benefits may be unnoticeable. Again, u hv to weigh the benefits vs the disadvantages.

having said that, from personal experience, any biz should do well with a good marketing strategy. So for example, I had once put up a post here about web workshop (it is still on, I am just trying to sort out a few things in terms of vacation time et al wink). However, I am 1000% sure that if I advertised on TV, radio, top newspapers, etc, the response would be thru the roof. Sure, it costs money, but many atimes, it takes u spending money to make money.

Another thing that could drive biz ur way has to do with benefits you provide the client(s). Another example of mine: when i was there, i owned a kiosk. Pple said I could never compete with the big boys (advice: make ur haters ur motivators) but I not only competed, i beat them: back in the early 90s, I did stuff that was done in the US even though I was never in the US as an adult or read that many books about the place (I wasn't fortunate to be born during the internet era): I would tell customers that if they bought 5 bottles of coke, I would throw in another one for free. Naysayers said it was suicidal, but what happened? Pple flocked to me in droves and within a yr, my kiosk expanded from a roadside venture to me actually acquiring a building. The kicker was that some of the same naysayers would come behind the others backs and ask to contribute money to my biz, which my honest self would pay them back weekly in the form of dividends.

Not to mince words, every biz has a chance to be lucrative or a woeful failure. You just have to say to yourself, no matter what, you will succeed.

here's to success to us all!!
