WebmastersRe: How Much Do You Charge for Website Design? by my2cents(m): 6:19pm On Apr 11, 2006
Hmmm,

how much do I charge? It depends. I would have to sit down with the client with my little spreadsheet that calculates as they add features.

All in all, prices differ on the following basis:

1) Template or fresh page
2) Graphics
3) Special features: Search, Keywords
4) Static or dynamic

That is just a few in a nutshell.

WebmastersRe: New Site: Re-lauched. Please Critique Heavily by my2cents(m): 6:03pm On Apr 11, 2006
Taking a 35,000 ft pass at the site:

1) I would rather you have either a static header or one that fades into another, and that's it. I kept feeling that I would miss something, as each image faded into another.

2) One of the flash images has a guy holding a cigar. Now, for a business, is this the proper way to say "hello world"? This one is my opinion. Perhaps it is okay within the Nigerian business context.

3) I disagree with whoever said html validation doesn't count. Sure, the user may not care, but as a fellowe web guy, first impressions count. It says a lot about you and whether or not a company could hire you. I "view source" a lot and I will tell you, even if you got N1billion for a site, if you don't follow web standards, I will have no respect for you as a coder. But that's just me cool

That is my 2 cents on this. As I said, this is just a 35,000 ft perspective. For more specifics, you will have to pay me wink

SportsRe: www.enyimbafc.net by my2cents(m): 5:52pm On Apr 11, 2006
I took a look at the home page. It looks nice. Now, here are my 2 cents on your concern(s):

1) Whatever language you want to use, shouldn't be an issue unless as determined by the environment you are working in. ASP or PHP should be fine.

2) I have used contribute and wouldn't advise you to do same. It tends to add a lot of fluff to the end-product content. However, if price is an issue, feel free to use it.

3) Attracting advertisers and a large international audience requires more than the advertisers seeing what they see on the site. Keep users in mind. For example:
a) There are a lot of graphics on the page so far. The header alone is 31K. That is 16 seconds on a 56K modem.
b) You may want to use CSS to ensure lighter pages. For example, there is no reason why your menus on the left should be images.
c) Have you thought about Search Engine Optimization?
d) There is no reason for your CSS/Javascript to be on the actual pages. What happens if you need to change something across the board?

4) There is no way for me to search the site

5) To attract, say, Japanese visitors, you may need to think of Internationalization. Even an Ibo version of the site wouldn't be too bad.

6) I am happy you aren't using flash. It seems every page in Nigeria, by decree under penalty of firing squad, has to use flash.

7) Will you be following web standards to ensure a good web experience regardless of browser/platform (PDA, cell phone, etc)?

Overall, I like your ideas. Very creative. You may want to look at sites of european football clubs for more. That is all I will say for now. Anything else, and you will have to pay me wink

Here is my resume/CV: http://www.geocities.com/myibibio/bios/itoroResume.html . I have put together the following sites, in conformance with web standards.

Fellow webmasters, is there anything else that needs to be said? I humbly and gladly accept suggestions/comments.

Thanks,

SweetnSour,

that "look into my eyes" stuff doesn't work with me o.

I could look into your eyes, let you go deep into my soul and in the end, you would find nothing grin

It's all psychological, It's all in the mind. She should just ask him (of course he will say he still trips for her) and make a decision based on her gut feeling. My gut feeling is that she should move on.

HotCo_Co,

Call me stupid but I think the mere fact that you are haggling up and down about whether or not to give him another chance tells me that even you sef, are not sure.

Dump him. Just as there are many fish in the sea, there are also many fishermen above water cool

Christianity EtcRe: Gospel Of Barnabas: Judas Did Not Betray Jesus? by my2cents(m): 5:59pm On Apr 10, 2006
I heard about this on friday. Yes, in the latter days, many shall come to decieve. But as it has been noted in the posts, what if we are all living one big deceit?

Isn't it true that before the Bible was standardized, that it was basically subject to whomever's interpretation? Haven't other aspects of the bible (like Jesus being a white man, Jesus being born on 25th december, da vinci code, etc) been proven wrong in recent times? As much as I am not saying that you should question your faith, you do have to wonder whether what oyibo has been telling us for years is true. Na so dem take control the world abi?

As a christian, as someone said here, I will stand on the rock. I however, will read other stuff and make the decision for myself. If I choose to consider the bible alone, how then can I arm myself against the "decievers"?

Finally, on my way to work this morning, these thoughts crossed my mind - Why did this news crop up during easter? Why don't we hear of other documents cropping up in other religions? It always seems like pple are trying their hardest to rubbish christianity.

I do know the answer to the first question though - In america, it's all about ratings, about the evil dollar. Whatever glues our eyes to the tube so as to milk more money out of advertising companies is the name of the game =)

Christianity EtcRe: Christian Wives And Submission To Their Husbands by my2cents(m): 5:48pm On Apr 10, 2006
My peeps,

as the bible says, just as a man is to love his wife, a woman is to submit to her husband. Sorry, but I don't have the book and verse, but I am sure you can figure that out wink

The problem is, that due to changing times (and in america, laws grin), the woman is now the neck, controlling the head (i.e. the husband "just as christ is the head of the church, "wink wherever it turns. Is this necessarily a bad thing? To me, it depends. I will let you decide on that.

Bottomline, in my opinion, for this world to be a better place (barring the abusive husbands who in my opinion should be rounded up and shot shocked), we need to get back to the basics. The man is the head, the woman is to submit and the man is to love the wife just as christ loved the church.

To clarify, what to me is "submit"? Well, thanks for asking grin - if, say, as the man, I bring up a topic for discussion, and the woman says her piece, I should be allowed to make the final decision, right or wrong. In other words, we may or may not agree. In the end though, my wife doesn't just sit and bark like that woman in "coming to america". She actually contributes to our decisions.

Boy!! Have I kicked up a storm grin
RomanceRe: How Can I Tell If My Man Is Serious? by my2cents(m): 5:39pm On Apr 10, 2006
hotCoCo,

Having a wife and daughter grin , I will say one thing, you women definitely have a 7th sense. So if your hunch is telling you he is not serious, then he probably isn't. Now the issue is whether he is man enough to admit it and/or if you are woman enough to dump him to the curb, and if you dump him, and he comes crawling back on all fours, would you take him back?

In my opinion, the ball is in your court, Knock it out of the stadium cheesy

dis "3rd world" crap done dey tire me sef. Who be "first world" or "second world"? D terminology was cooked up during the cold war. Either way, I no dey subscribe to the subtle subjection to inferiority. I prefer to see nations as Developed and Developing. Given my definition, no country is developed, not even the US. If so, there would be no need for further research, for example, on a daily basis.

CareerRe: Alumni Associations: Why Do We Create Them? by my2cents(m): 5:01pm On Apr 06, 2006
From my observations, nigerians form associations in general as way to feel in charge. It's just an avenue to chop money, meet once in a while to chop eba and dance to get rid of stress. In the end, the association is only as strong as the will of the members and their purpose. If you get together for the purpose of raising scholarship money and everyone is serious about it and don't end up giving to their kin, it will succeed.

Ababoy, me i follow be IK alum o! I even learn say Rita Nwatorocha (aka Dominic) of nollywood fame na fellow alum too. I am from the class of 1990, Cross-River house wink . Being in the states, I subscribe to http://www.geocities.com/CapitolHill/3234/

CareerRe: How To Approach Your Boss For A Raise (Salary) by my2cents(m): 4:56pm On Apr 06, 2006
IMHO,

The way you present yourself at work determines a whole lot about your salary range and raise. I speak from an American perspective. I don't know where the original author of the question is.

From my experience, if you present yourself to oyibo as desperate ("i'll do anything for the team", "team player", etc), na so dem go dey treat you. They will think they can toy with you as if you do gra gra, and dem fire you, you no get choice. On the other hand, if like me, you treat your job like a job (in other words, you can always go somewhere else anytime, even if you no get kobo for account cool), they respect you more and before you know it, na dem go dey approach you for raise, bonus, etc. Again, I speak from experience. I have been on both sides of the fence, so I think I know what I am talking about.

FamilyRe: Should The Church Have The Right To Demand A HIV Certificate Before Marriage? by my2cents(m): 4:50pm On Apr 06, 2006
IMHO, the church shouldn't. The government? maybe, but definitely not the church.

Bottomline, if 2 pple decide to get married, it should be up to them to make their spouses-to-be to get tested, and not to the government to dictate their every day lives.

TravelRe: Will Lagos Ever Be Like Abuja? by my2cents(m): 4:47pm On Apr 06, 2006
Sure, Lagos can be like Abuja. Solution is very simple: Raze it to the ground and build it from the ground up. Of course, if you do that, then the next question would be "can Abuja be like Lagos?" since Lagos would have been built using the technologies present at the time, which of course Abuja wouldn't have access to, having been built years ago.

In the end, we are back answering the question over and over again, and we are stuck in an endless loop of "Can, ever be like, ?"

In its hey day, Lagos was da bomb. As the name of a popular night bus company goes, "grin young shall grow"

kimba,

As for the job that youth corper was doing, I will lv that to your imagination grin

As for my pay, sure, I know I could get that kind of money, if I really looked, but I am really picky about what I will do. There are 2 options for me: self-employment or management position at a company. I would personally go with the former, as man no wan wahala when it comes to pay day, if you know what I mean wink

doubleooh7,

I tried going to the anglican site, but it didn't return a page. Did you mean: http://www.anglican-nig.org/ ?

If no:
I would love to check it out, so check the correct url and get back to us.

If yes:
1) I personally don't like sites that start off with flash. Yeah, I know, there is a "skip intro". Y have it there if you know pple may skip? Kind of like y have a "help section" of a page that you know isn't self-explanatory?

2) Too much info blasting in my face on the home page. Content seems to be disorganized.

3) I also personally don't like scrolling marquees. To me, they are distracting.

Zahymaka, I feel ya

It seems every naija govt'al website must have a section devoted to "Nigerian newspapers". Abi na decree? Even if they must have, I would rather have it under a section users would go to, as opposed to having it on the home page.

I am happy my post has generated this much response. Just imagine if we all came together, moved back to naija and started a consultancy firm? grin

Constructive criticism, I likes dat

Probably no one will pay me that kind of money, which is why I will never work for anyone in the first place. I would rather do my own thing over there. Having said that, of course the limiting factor for now, is the almighty capital. If I had what I was looking for, na for inside plan I for dey reply dis thread cool

Is that Ajax book the one from WROX? I like their books, but I didn't find it useful in the ajax case - I develop in JSP and though, yes, ajax is independent of programming language, I couldn't stand all the PHP code in there cry It's a good thing I only browsed it at Barnes. I am currently looking for one that deals with jsp. It seems the whole world is jazzed up about PHP (that's a topic for another day, or is it? wink)

Sorry, I posted by mistake. Here is the address: http://www.virginnigeria.com/en/ng/Index.aspx

As I was saying, I wouldn't make the right nav one big image. It would definitely be text with a green background, called via css.

2) I would move the "exclusive" image to the top. On a 1024 screen resolution (naijans at a cybercafe probably use less), it is below the fold. How would a user take advantage of it?

I will leave it at 2 till I hear from others. Let's stop yabbing our sites and get together for once smiley

You all can do it!!!

Let's Put Our Web Skills To Work

Here is a topic I have been stewing for a while:

How about we, as web developers/designers/architects pick one Nigeria site a week and point out ways in which to make it better? Perhaps the coders of such sites could pick up on what we are saying and make such sites better. Better yet, by collaborating, we would end up strengtheningo our own skills.

If you are with me, I would like to start with Virgin Nigeria:

If I coded the site, for one, the price list on the right would not be one big image

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 ... 70 71 72 73 74 75 (of 75 pages)
