RomanceRe: "love" Does Not Exist, Let's Stop This Delusion! by N101: 6:47pm On Jul 11, 2011
claremont: I believe you should know that our mothers, fathers, and ancestors never married on the basis of a delusion called "love", because if they did, their marriages wouldn't have lasted donkey-years as compared to the "love" deluded societies of today. Our ancestors married on the basis of mutual respect and compatibility, this entails a honest recognition of each others strength and weaknesses. It is different from the "love" delusion propagated today by the western societies which has directly led to an increase in divorce rates and single parenthood plaguing the western world today. These societal ills have begun to permeate the facets of the African economy because we have also started to absorb the false tenets of the "love" delusion, the same way we absorbed the "God delusion" and allowed it to destroy our cultural norms and values. What you call "communality" has been an inherent part of the human nature all through the perilous times of evolution, even most animals are communal in nature, does it mean animals experience "love" too?!
Very interesting dissertation but in no way answers my questions.

Let me try again:

1) Are you/have you ever been married?
2) have you ever observed your parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles relationships?
3) have you ever spoken to someone who's been married for more than 20 years for their point of view?
RomanceRe: "love" Does Not Exist, Let's Stop This Delusion! by N101: 10:38am On Jul 11, 2011
@ Claremont

Let me ask you a couple of things:

First, have you ever been married?
Second, have you ever observed your parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles relationships?
Third, have you ever spoken to someone who's been married for more than 20 years for their point of view?

It is very easy to have a theoretical idea of the "concept" of love.  Even if it means a thousand things to a thousand people, at its root must be some communality, whether that is emotional or not.  Even culture plays a part into our perception of love - remember this so-called Western idea of love is only at best a few centuries old.

You really giving me jokes today.

Which opposition will be interested in this - the SNP?  The opposition is about as interested in this as the average Brit - right now they have bigger fish to fry.   Plus during the Labour Party's recent tenure very similar things happened and what happened to those cases?  Did they cause any furore by the then opposition?

Maybe after the summer break this will get a look in, or one or two MPs might mention it if they get the chance.  Not a lot of feathers will get ruffled over this in parliament.

if twitter n facebook can remove the president of egypt, cameron will resign should something happen to bimbo's kids in nigeria. cameron must know it's the facilities in this country that kept those babies alive and that same facility does not exist in nigeria. heaven forbid it, sending those children to naija is akin to sending them to death. . . . .the whole world is watching. I laugh in Mongolese - are you comparing a Twitter and Facebook campaign on this issue to the Egyptian uprising?  They are poles apart!  Not even Nigerians are united on this, be guaranteed a lot of Brits won't remotely be interested, let alone feel as passionately about this as you do.

Why would David Cameron consider resigning if - God forbid - anything happens to her children in Nigeria should she be deported?  There are too many flaws and contradictions in this story to justify any resignation.

I'm curious - do men who sleep with women other than their wives consider themselves to be people of integrity? Do they consider themselves honest? "God fearing"?

If any man who cheats on his wife considers himself to be any of the above, I'd like to know his reasons for thinking so.

@ poster - I don't understand why the man's family would think your friend was responsible for his death.  Just because of a loan? Is that your friend a loan shark or does he have a bad reputation?

Your friend has no dilemma. He can do the right thing and repay the loan to the man's family, or be a crook according to the request of his wife and whoever she talked to about it.

@ tpia and Nigeria Ntns, I agree with your comments.

What kind of man would let a woman treat him like this for 30 years and not take action?  I have no sympathy for him, if he has no relationship with her his children should be the important thing, unless he feels he won't be taken seriously as an ambassador without a woman on his arm.

If he was my father telling this story I would be ashamed and embarrassed.  He knew she was bad tempered but went ahead and married her, even having 4 or 5 children with her.  Which one of them is the bigger fool?
CultureRe: Single Ladies Discriminated Against By Hotels In Nigeria by N101: 10:13am On Jul 10, 2011
@ tivta - you need to update your thinking. Even if there are more women than men in Nigeria (even then this is guesswork), statistically men outnumber women globally.

I wonder where else will women go to have a drink unhindered - a beer parlour?  Even if I knew this to be the case, I would go to have a drink with a friend. But then I'm sure it doesn't matter if it were 1 or 10, they would all be seen as potential prostitutes.

Hi Nairalanders

I'm hoping to get some help in finding phones with infrared on them. I know Bluetooth has pretty much replaced infrared on phones, but I know someone who wants a phone with infrared to use with their old laptop which uses infrared and not wifi.

So far I've only been able to identify the Nokia N900 and Nokia E71. Anyone know of any other phones?

Airtel has indeed upped it from 100MB to 200MB for N1,000

This is not new with Airtel.  I got the impression they've just "upgraded" their mobile internet settings. Check and make sure you have the updated settings.

They have been having problems e.g not being able to get through to customer services, but customers are the last to know.  Also, take into consideration your location and the current weather. I found that during the rainy season reception is extremely poor.

You can get chickenpox  more than once.

I had it as a child and had it recently.  I was adviced to stay indoors so it doesnt spread to others, doctors asked me to ring the GP rather than visit in person. Not funny i tell ya  grin
Can't beat the first time I had chicken pox. I didn't know what it was and went to visit Oyinbo GP.  He had a black student doctor with him.

As soon as I came in he got all excited.  He was saying to the student "aah, this is a good example, you never usually see this, look".  Then he asked me questions and quite excitedly echoed my response back at the student.  He was happily showing the student where the poxes were and said "they've come up beautifully" "aah, look at that one, see it here"  grin

Of course I'm totally lost cos I have no idea what he's talking about.  He then sat down matter-of-fact and said to me "Chickenpox", lol.

Hey Guys, Please lets not make too much of this banking issue. It is the least of our problem in Nigeria. I agree with some sentiments being displayed by the pro Islamic banks, but I also get the concern of the people against it. I think the problem is lack of education about what the bank is really about, and also the implementation is happening, perhaps, at wrong time. With the issue of Boko Haram threat, it is understandable if people who dont understand the islamic banking cocept to be concerned.

@poster, instead of lumping all southerners into one big basket of Islam-hating hostiles, it is your reponsibility as an educated Muslim (if you are) to educate people on the issue.

Instead of complaining let's have a christaian bank as well, if there is anything like that. Even if Nigeria is a secular state there are core beliefs of people that should be tolerated to an allowable extent by others. For example, in Canada an RCMP police officer is suppose to wear a helmet by law, but the people of the Silkh religion are exempted because they wear turban. Let's be a little bit accomondating to others - that is what secularity truly means.
Very objective and thoughtful response but unfortunately you are not speaking to "rational" people.  The downside of the so-called "Religion" section of NL.
FamilyRe: Is It right for a married woman To Be Attracted To Other men? by N101: 11:56am On Jul 06, 2011
I think people are getting confused: "admire" and "attracted to" are different things.

I can see someone of the opposite sex and admire them, but the whole thing ends there.

I don't want to go home with them.
I don't want a relationship.
I don't imagine what my life would be like with their qualities/them in it.

Now attraction is what drew me to my spouse (along with other factors).

I want to go home with them
I want a lifetime relationship with them
I cannot imagine what my life would be like without my sheepdog  grin

So for a married woman to be "attracted to" another man implies something emotional: maybe desire, or something is missing in her current relationship, or a longing for something else, however brief it may be.  Just my opinion.

If he was stabbed by her like he said, where are his wounds? Did he go to a clinic or hospital to have them treated?

If she stabbed herself to death, why maim herself?  Why use 2 knives when one would do the job?

More importantly, why didn't he, a grown man, shout for help - why did he run away like a small boy?

It is disgraceful even to give this man's rants any publicity.

Islamic banking is practised  in  Britain and other major western countries .

Funny enough I was listening to a report about this recently and it's been said Islamic Banking isn't as successful as they thought it would be - the take-up for Islamic mortgages etc has been lower than expected.  But the thing is at least people have the choice.

In an already divisive country like Nigeria, I don't think it will make much difference if some people see any type of banking as evil and forbidden (those people are out there).

Christians and Muslim on this Nairaland, , no be all posts una go respond,

OK, since the Muslims did not lament nor agitate against your stands during the era of your christian /bible schools but did the constitutional option of applying for a Muslims school too;
it only fair that you reciprocate in kind and be a good sport. The Muslim actually take the higher road of not denying you the right to have a missionary schools, hospital, Orphanage etc.
The message is; kindly apply for a christian non-interest bank. and stop pushing for an apocalypses. simple

So far, so good,  99.9% of Muslims are still peaceful (and yet, just the 0.1% that have gone rogue (BH et al) are giving us hell). Let's keep it that way.
Quit stirring the hornet nest by push to deny them a peaceful, constitutional right to commercial venture within the ambit of their belief
Quit force feeding them usury/interest against their wishes (which is the obvious choice they are faced with, if there's no Islamic banking)

Nigerian Christians! (of course, the senselessly bigoted ones only). Stop poking your fingers into the sleeping dogs mouth! (no offence to Muslims, just analogy)
I always have a problem with people discrediting a belief system they don't agree with - to each his own.  Otherwise, I take your point; Nigerian Christians can be extremely ignorant and myopic. But then I don't term them as "Christians" in any normal sense, though there are very few exceptions.  Their Muslim counterparts exist as well, they make one big happy bigoted family  grin

To me these people are reflective of a very narrow minded Nigerian mindset that isn't limited to belief.

Sadly another useless thread that becomes nothing more than name calling, where the points are totally lost through bigotry (both Muslim, Christian and otherwise).

And every day we wonder why Nigerians are still scraping from the bottom of the barrel to survive.   Where is all your so-called "African" values and culture?

PhonesRe: Your Phone Stolen? Share Your Experience by N101: 2:43am On Jul 06, 2011
Lost one, had one stolen and both my favourite phones at the time.

The first phone, a beautiful Siemens S35i, fell out of my pocket when I went out with a friend. The weird thing is that when I called it, it rang, but I couldn't find it. Thought it was in my friend's car but it was no where to be found.  In the end I gave up looking for it.  Bought another one a few months later after getting a Nokia 3210 as a stop-gap.

The other phone, a Sony Ericsson Z610, was stolen along with my bag at work.  I had briefly stepped out of the office to check something. I was leaving half day and had left my bag in a chair, as opposed to under my desk.  It was only when I was getting ready to leave that an unreal feeling came over me and realised my bag, with my banana, money I had withdrawn that morning, phones (also had a Samsung D600 in the bag), eye glasses and my Nintendo DS were all in my stolen bag.

To say I was upset was an understatement.  My line manager, bless him, gave me some money to help me out. I had to do a whole lot of palaver reporting it etc.  Even the CCTV didn't cover the place where my bag got stolen.  Over the next few months I replaced every and then tried to put it behind me, since that incident I was always wary and double checking myself at work.

The following year I was seconded to another office for a few months, and got a call from my line manager a few weeks into the secondment.  Someone had found my bag, and more so, apart from the Sony Ericsson and the money, everything else was in there!  Apparently someone found it and kept it nearby, but never bothered reporting it. I guessed when the banana started to smell she looked inside, recognised my name and then gave it to my line manager.

Also turns out that I had actually passed the thief when I briefly left the office, thinking he was another client.  He committed a robbery at a sister building a couple of months later and was known to the police.  In our CCTV footage he was seen in the communal area not long before I came out from the office.  I was told it probably was a good thing I never confronted him as he was known to be violent.
RomanceRe: Whats The Difference Between Lust, Infatuation And Love? by N101: 2:31am On Jul 04, 2011
for the first questing (i mean ipod and black), i will not answre because i believe love, infatuation and lust are feeling s that can only be ascibed to humans and not objects, unless we are not talking the same thing. for other two qustions, i will let u real the post i posted earlier, perhaps u will answer them urself. after reading. i insert it below.

the english language is the cause of all these confusion,
latin is a more complete language that has name for different feelings e.g
it has agape - which describes feeling between God and man, it could also exist between two people who are in relationship with GOD (it is perfect and unconditional.
it has philia - this is a feeling of likeness between family members, i.e. brothers and sisters, father and son or daugther
it had eros - this is the feeling between a man and awoman who are not related -its is built on lust and infatuation and its conditional
it also has name for two friends eithe or opposite or same sex, cant remember the name.

now the english language combines all these feelings and call them love! and so when a man says to a woman "i love u" both the sayer and the sayee assume that they both meant agape love. this is so because agape love is more desirable and is more pronounced of all that feelings mentiond above. hence the mistake that love is perfect blah blah blah
I read what you wrote but that doesn't exclude you from answering my questions. It's not that hard is it?

Love in English is interchangeable, depending on what you are using it to refer to, unlike Greek or Spanish.  If someone says "I love you" the smart thing any English-speaker will do is to define whether this love is conditional (if so, what are the conditions).  Problem that people get too caught up in the phrase/word and miss what the person is really saying.

Someone once said: "I love you madly" could easily mean "I lust you badly".  The question is, how do you define which it is?

The Greek translations may point us in a direction, but it still doesn't mean we don't understand how people "love" us, and yes it can get complicated when we don't know what people mean.   Most normal people can differentiate the feelings they have for their BlackBerry and iPhone versus their family, even using the English word "love".

Think it the appointment thing depends on where you live and the kind of practice. At first it surprised me when I first moved from one neighbourhood to another, but then I got used to it. By the time my appointment came up the symptoms had usually disappeared. It was a cure in itself, lol.
