A Kwara State University, KWASU, student, Jimoh Abdulmueez, has been declared missing.

Jimoh, a 24-year old computer engineering student, was last seen on Thursday last week
, DAILY POST reports.

He reportedly left the university campus, Malete, for his Ilorin home but has not been seen since then.

On Friday, a report was made at the police station, but nothing has been heard so far.

His mother, Mrs Jimoh Amdalat, appealed to any member of the public with information about his whereabouts to call 07030889682.

Efforts to reach the spokesperson of the institution, Dr Saeedat Aliyu proved abortive on Tuesday.

However, a source in the institution, disclosed that the parents of the missing student visited the school but could not locate him.

Jimoh reportedly left the campus at about 7:00 pm on Thursday for home, but could not be found on Friday when he was supposed to write a test.

His friends decided to call his phone number which was not answered after several calls.

DAILY POST gathered that the friends then called the parents who said they did not see him at home.

After a futile search for him, the parents reported the matter to the police station.

Spokesperson of the state police command, DSP Ejire Adeyemi Toun, when contacted, said the police had begun investigation into the matter.

Because Of Hardship, E Don Lead To DEATH
CrimeNursing Student Commits Suicide In Ogun by NaijaCover(op): 7:50pm On Feb 20, 2024
A 300-Level Student at a Private Tertiary Institution In Abeokuta, Ogun State, Simply Identified As Ajoke, has reportedly committed suicide.

Our correspondent gathered that Ajoke, a student of Basic Medical Science at Havarde College of Science, Business and Management Studies, Abeokuta, on Monday evening, drank poisonous substance, suspected to be Sniper.

Her body was discovered in her hostel room located off-campus.

Sources at the college revealed that the deceased, who had been battling depression, must have committed suicide over an “unwanted pregnancy.”

Another Account indicated that the her condition worsened after she found out that her course not been accredited by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria.

“For more than four months now, she (deceased) had been depressed because of the fact that the course she was studying was not accredited.

“She used to complain because she claimed her parents used all the money they had to send her to the school.

“Things now got worse when she discovered she was pregnant and she could not even have a certificate for the course she had done for years,” the source said.

But, the provost of the institution, Dr. Ismail Oyetunji, said the circumstances surrounding the death of the student happened outside the school’s premises.

The provost added that the deceased’s parents came to the school last week to pack her belongings after discovering she was pregnant.

He said, “A 300-level nursing student was reported to me this morning by our dean of students affair to have committed suicide. She was impregnated by her boyfriend. Her parent got to know and came last week to pack her belongings from the school.

“She came back to Abeokuta and thereafter decided to commit suicide. She was rushed to Hope Hospital by her boyfriend in the Adigbe area of Abeokuta where she eventually died.

“Everything happened outside the college premises. However, the management of the college sympathises with the parent and relatives of the deceased. We sincerely pray that God will give them the fortitude to bear.”

When asked if the suicide is connected to the non-accreditation of the nursing programme offered in the institution, the provost insisted that the student committed suicide because of the pregnancy.

“No no, it has nothing to do with that. She got pregnant and her parent was aware. They came and packed her belongings in Abeokuta because of that. It happened somewhere outside the school.”

Meanwhile, the Ogun State Government on Tuesday shut down the Nursing Department of the college for allegedly offering a degree programme in Nursing Sciences for six years without accreditation by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN).

The department was shut down during an enforcement exercise carried out by officials of the state Ministry of Health and members of the State Nursing and Midwifery Committee (SNMC).

Speaking during the enforcement exercise, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Dr. Kayode Oladehinde, stated that such unauthorised programme contributed to quackery in the profession, thereby posing a threat to the health of the populace.

He maintained that the Nursing Department of the institution would remain closed until fully accredited.

Oladehinde, represented by the Acting Director of Nursing Services, Mrs. Serifat Aminu, described a degree in Nursing obtained from Harvarde College and similar institutions without NMCN accreditation as worthless, explaining that graduates from such schools would be denied licence to practise in Nigeria and other parts of the world.

“We have discovered that many institutions, including Harvarde College, offer nursing degrees to unsuspecting students. Our mission is to clamp down on such institutions because they end up producing quacks in the Nursing profession. This is dangerous for society. Unfortunately, most students are unaware that their time is being wasted,” he said.

He warned parents and candidates desiring to pursue nursing or related programmes to be wary of institutions making false claims by checking the NMCN website for an updated list of accredited institutions, assuring that the government would continue to check quackery in the nursing profession.

CareerRe: Should I Go For A Masters Degree Or Remain Jobless At Home? by NaijaCover(m): 6:57pm On Feb 20, 2024
BucketMan:
Hello guys, please I need your advice. I'm currently in a dilemma on what to do with my life presently. I'm a lawyer called to the bar in December 2022. Afterwards I practiced in a law firm for 6 months before resigning due to the meagre salary and harsh work environment. I just couldn't keep up, Although I can confirm that legal practice was very terrific but it's something that you can only enjoy if you're well paid at the Law firm or company you work with to effectively maintain the standard expected from you.

I've been jobless for 8 months now as all the efforts I put into securing a job ended in futility. I'm thinking of going for my masters degree(LLM) instead of staying idle at home with my parents. I think by doing this I can keep myself busy and improve on my career academically while also trying to find a good job in today's Nigeria.

Serious advice needed please

Increase In Dollar, Is Bring Hardship In Nigeria
BusinessNaira Hits N1,825 To Dollar Despite EFCC Gun Rescue Attempt by NaijaCover(op): 4:17pm On Feb 20, 2024
On Tuesday, the naira dipped further, trading at N1,825 to a dollar, despite efforts by the Economic Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to disrupt the activities of perceived manipulators and speculators.

On Monday, Peoples Gazette reported how the anti-graft agency raided the well-known Abuja Zone 4 market, shooting at Bureau De Change operators to stop the naira’s rapid decline.

But, less than 24 hours after EFCC raided BDC operators in Abuja, the naira continued its rapid decline, dipping from N1,700 against the dollar to N1,825 to a dollar 24 hours later.

This came as the naira hit an all-time low against the dollar and pound sterling in Nigeria’s history, despite efforts by the Central Bank of Nigeria to salvage the free fall of the naira.

Though the naira had been on a downward trend against the dollar before Mr Tinubu assumed office last May, the naira’s freefall accelerated following the floating of the currency.

In September, the naira exchanged at N1,000 to one dollar at the parallel market. This historic dip spotlighted the weakness of Mr Tinubu’s efforts to manage the national currency amid runaway inflation.

In July, the Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA) complained that floating the nation’s currency had caused a drop in vehicle importation in the nation’s ports.

The Currency fell to N1,520.123 to a dollar on January 31, according to Naira Rates.

This is against the currency’s depreciation to N1,482.75 per dollar recorded in the official foreign exchange market on January 30, amounting to a N38 depreciation for the naira under 24 hours.

The fall made it the first time after the COVID-19 pandemic that the official exchange rate was higher than the parallel market exchange rate, which traded at N1,470 per dollar from N1,425 on January 29.

The monetary policy of President Bola Tinubu’s government played a huge role in the further downward slide of the naira after he floated the currency.

Mr Tinubu’s economic policy scrapping fuel subsidy and collapsing multiple foreign exchange windows into the single Importer and Exporter, or I&E window, drastically depreciated the naira’s value by 98 per cent, a report by the Price Water Coopers stated.

The top global business advisory audit firm said in its report ‘Nigeria’s Economic Outlook: Seven Trends That Will Shape Nigerian Economy in 2024’ that Mr Tinubu implemented policies that had the domino effect of devaluing the naira by nearly 100 per cent but appealed to foreign investors as the move was projected to improve the economy in 2024.

On September 26, the naira witnessed an unprecedented historical low, dipping to N1000 against the U.S. dollar. Since then, the currency has lost 17 per cent of its value.

The persistent decline of the naira is a source of concern and a spotlight on the challenges associated with President Bola Tinubu’s fiscal policies.

Despite the far-reaching consequences, including inflation and diminished economic purchasing power, Mr Tinubu has undertaken what his cabinet refers to as strategic moves, such as the petrol subsidy removal, which was met with resistance and scepticism but reflects an attempt to reduce the government’s financial burden and promote a more market-driven economy as well as the decision to adopt a clean float foreign exchange management.
