I just have a funny feeling that if the law is allowed to run its course, some of the removed MDs will be reinstated.

I know they are not all clean , however i think in trying to prove their uncleanliness, the CBN  may have been rather hasty, thereby leaving holes to be exploited legally.

There are claims and counter claims about the status of the performing and non-performing loans. Seriously i feel sanusi prosecuted a good job badly.

I think he will be harrassed and aked to "go and sin no more" .

Personally as much as one is not pleased with the happenings in the country, it must be stated that inciting statements to military men will do the country more harm than good.

What baffles me is how our politicians play the victim whenever their relevance in the scheme of things wane.

I just wonder if he did not consider all these before the initial pronouncement
PoliticsOnovo Backtracks: Is this selective Justice or What? by naso2(op): 11:20am On Aug 20, 2009
Nigeria’s former Vice-President, Dr. Alex Ekwueme, and former Secretary General of the Commonwealth of Nations, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, have been exempted from a recent directive by the Inspector General of Police, (IGP), Mr. Ogbonna Onovo, on withdrawal of police orderlies.
Anambra State Police Commissioner, Mr. Uzor Amakulor, who spoke to a   cross section of newsmen in Awka, yesterday, said the exemption was in deference to their esteemed positions in the society and contributions therein, as compared to others who move around with a retinue of policemen harassing and intimidating innocent citizens.
He said the  order was being complied with in his command and cases of those seen still moving around with police escorts were isolated. “We have peculiar cases like the former Vice-President, Dr. Alex Ekwueme, former Commonwealth Secretary General, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, who come into the state often. We cannot withdraw their orderlies, because they are the people that matter in the society,” he said.
He also gave an instance with the ace movie actor, Pete Edochie who was kidnapped in Nkpor, an Onitsha suburb last Sunday, saying  if he had had police orderlies, perhaps he may not have fallen victim to kidnappers.

This keeps me wondering if his initial pronouncement was just IGG as is common with new office holders in this country?

What do you think?

My guy lets talk content please. I am a football fan but find it absurd to pay 6k for HITV which is just football and almost nothing else.

I was part of those that were annoyed with the pricing of DSTV but now that we have HITV , I do not think DSTV is expensve when you consider the number of channels and overall content. Then we thought these SA guys were ripping us off , but the one wey our niger  guys (HITV) dey do na im bad pass.

The truth is if HITV can so upgrade its content that one can completely dump DSTV , then its okay. But as is I do not see why I will dump DSTV for HITV . Na only football person go dey watch?

At a time like this when uncertainty looms in the the country's finances I will be stupid to be paying 15k per month for pay tv ALONE.

When people talk of due process i start to wonder; why did the bank management not consider due process in dashing politicians other peoples money without having real collateral? The 420 billion that CBN pumped in has been exhausted in just one day; now people are talking of 2 trillion. Those bank management should be arrested immediately; all their personal assets and those owned via proxies should be seized pending actual determination of the actual value that was mismanaged.
I am not holding brief for the banks, but I do not think it is proper for the CBN in trying to punish banks for failing to do due diligence in giving out loans,  should now make the mistake of leaving holes in the argument by being too hasty.

If you take oceanic bank for example  it beats ones  imagination why after just  approving the year end report , the CBN came a few days after to strike. Then something must be wrong , either the CBN approved a false report or the removal of the MD is wrong.

Let them investigate further and prosecute whoever is guilty, but let it be done the proper way.
BusinessRe: CBN Sacks CEOs And Management Of Five Banks by naso2(m): 4:56pm On Aug 18, 2009
I have been very careful in my assesment of Lamido since he came on board. We as nigerians are prone to celebrate any action that tallies with our general belief, most times without considering issues from all angles.

That the banking system needs cleansing is no news, however a wrong approach would only aggravate the stench in the system instead of cleaning the mess.

In banking generally it is generally known that risk managers and controll personnel have their unique functions which are helpful to business, however they have not been proven to be good businessmen, why because they undermine the place of risk taking as a critical element in business decison making.

While soludo may have made mistakes his supervisory and control functions over the banks which is evident, I am afraid that Sanusi in trying to do a good job is seemingly being carried away by public opinion and personal prejudice such that he has refused to follow due process to implement even a justifiable task.( my opinion anyway)

Secondly I just hope the government funds in these banks will not just go down the drain as a result of the run in these banks. why? because the CBN does not seem to be cautious in its utterances before pressmen all in an attempt to justify its actions. Hence more and more claims that only weeaken public confidence in this institutions are made.

The claims by most of the sacked MDs is that CBN acted on an audit query without getting the reponse of the bank's concerned. I believe that no matter how plausible an exercise is, due process must be followed to plug all procedural holes that can be exploited legally these MDs
PoliticsRe: Democracy Has Failed In Nigeria -nba President -blame Military For Nigeria’s Woe by naso2(m): 3:35pm On Aug 18, 2009
folem:
The Military actually destroyed Nigeria.

You cannot blame the Military enough.

The unitary nature of the Military and the legacy it left on the country is what we are still battling to tackle from Fiscal Federalism to State Police.

Without Military intervention in Nigerian Politics we wont be debating about 13% or 40% derivation because in the 1st republic it was 50% and we wont have such a high number of unviable States waiting for Federal Allocation to take care of over 80% annual expenditure and the entire country is nearly 90% dependent on Oil & Gas.
So military is why governors wire public funds abroad?, military is to blame for our inability to organize credible elections, which we have been struggling with since first republic even before the first military coup?

Military is to blame for the state of our roads which would conveniently pass for sophisticated death traps. Abi?

My point is while the military have their blame for some of our challenges, there is sufficient evidence that our crop of politicians are just a bunch of criminals that are envied even by the devil. They blame the military and steal the money, they blame the military and subvert due process, they blame the military and celebrate the IBORIs ,Igbinedions and KALUS of this world.

Nothing annoys me like this lazy manner political analyst in the country blame their failure/corruption purely on the military. This is not doing the country any good .

I beleive this excuse is outdated. 1999-2009 is 10years and one can hardly see development in any strata of our socio-economic life and people still blame the military. what a waste.

I am definitely not a believer in the statement that "the worst democratic government is better than the best military rule" at least not in nigeria.

Its difficult for me not to believe that HITV and DSTV are working together behind the scenes. because b4 hitv one would get everything from DSTV, now while DSTV subscription has not reduced , the content has.

Now one can not have it complete except when both HITV and DSTV are combined.

mr coker i would say you have a way with the pen though at times it might be skewed and seems to be a hatchet job for the cbn governor, we all cant run away from the fact that de-marketing occurs in the banking sector and intercontinental bank was a victim of this, its books might have been cooked, its practices might have been wrong but one thing was clear it suffered the de-marketing smear campaign more than any other bank in the country, it erred in not doing a proper risk assessment on the loans it gave out but most banks in Nigeria  do the same thing, why was your article so particular about akingbola when 4 other banks suffered the same fate too, an institution built on quick sand wouldn't expand and grow the way intercontinental bank did, get this clear I'm not saying what they did was right but you were too personal and direct in your attack it looks more like a hatchet job than a critical analysis of the intercontinental crisis, all banks in Nigeria I repeat all banks do invest in the high risk downstream sector and margin loans but doing a proper risk assessment was where intercontinental shot itself and for goodness sake all banks are out there for good ol' lucre if not there wouldn't be investors investing in them that's the driving force behind an investor. so please do a better job next time i smell deep rooted animosity here.
Just one of the few nigerians who still think with the whole of their brain.

With the wealth of resources Dayo coker has, it would have been more dignifying for readers if he did an industry-wide analysis of all the banks and not resort to using his pen to make us see just one of the criminals in the sector, while we still have scores of such CEO's in the industry.

Are you for real? That you don't know about the Abandoned Properties edict of the Diette-Spiff government? Please ask Ibime, or any other person, or even go see it in any library.

92% of all the landed properties in Port Harcourt were owned by Igbos before the war, after the war, Igbos who had fled the cities returned, but the government refused to let them have their own houses back-----they called them Abandoned Properties.

These houses were controlled by the so-called Abandoned Properties Implementation commission, headed by then Maj. David Mark of the Nigerian Army. The River State government released about 1000 properties back to their Igbo owners, but the majority, the rest were confiscated and given to Ijaws, Ogonis, etc that claim ownership of the city, however some are still pending in court as we speak.

I beg do some research on this issue.
Was the edict a rivers state government issue, or an FG arragement ? My point is that it was more of an FG idea than a river state government idea.

For crying out loud, CBN just bailed out the banks. It only makes sense to put its own managers in charge.
Yes you are correct, my concern/doubts has to do with the calibre of men  he has appointed to oversee these banks.

For  instance funke osibodu  (mbc bank & Ecobank), Nebolisa Ara (fidelity bank) are  former executives  with very  questionable records bothering on integrity .

Besides I hope Funke will not be overwhelmed by the size of Union bank?

Nebolisa Arah (Afribank) - Caused trouble Fidelity discount house
Susan Eroche (Finbank) Funke's friend. They chop money together

Sometimes, I'm baffled with the level of group mentality Nigerians display while responding to sensitive issues. Most even care less to peruse
through the whole article line after line to avoid being decieved by the attention grabbing headline.

What's wrong for the police to respond force with force? Some people even used the American system of policing to support their claim but they
failed to mention that the same American police is empowered to respond forcefully if they deem the suspect to be dangerous to them or the
Society.
Although the Nigerian Police may not be the best security outfit one could trust, we should always be grateful to the little they are doing.
So what you are saying is that if faced with force, the nigerian police does not respond because they are not empowered by the constitution? funny grin grin

So what explains the extra judicial killings by the police where they hide under the alibi of self defense and response in the line of duty?

Our existing laws already give the police the requisite powers to respond even in election scenario ones peace is breached by weapon carrying thugs. This I believe explains the outrage that this guys are up to some mischief.
