FBS: Abeg, who was that player that made a back pass even though he was clear on goal? Honestly speaking, I have never seen such before. God bless you , I thought I was the only one that saw it. Infact I was thinking he knew he was already offside. Even Arsenal never try that kind thing before. That climaxed of the unserious showing of our team yesterday. |

The funny thing about this group is that every team still has a mathematical chance of winning the group. Yes I mean even mozambique or kenya. 1. Tunisia needs to win their remaining two matches (kenya home,Mozambique away). They are favoured to win Kenya at home, however with the Nations cup ticket at stake and an arithmetic chance of qualifying for the world cup if they win their remaining two matches, an unlikely upset can not be ruled out. Against mozambique the tunisians will have to fight the weather, youth and determination of the mozambique team to qualify. Since Mozambique will at least still have the nations cup to play for, we expect them to fight all the way. However experience and technical depth of the Tunisians might just see them through. 2. Nigeria needs to win their remaining two matches convincingly and hope that tunisia slip to be able to qualify. Home match against mozambique which on paper Nigeria should win. However considering the determination of the Mozambique side and the fact that Nigeria has played poorly in the last four qualifying matches(yes even against kenya), an upset will not surprise most Nigerians. Against Kenya who will at least be playing for a nations cup spot, the chances are very slim that Nigeria can pull an outright win. See as Amodu turn me to pools staker wey dey do permutation |

chic2pimp: Mikel na player? I bet SAF would be thanking his lucky star. The funny thing is that though Ghan and CIV have better players, they also play more like a team. Yaya toure controls and runs the CIV's midfield . Essien does that as well. If I hia anyone name mikel as one of africa's best footballer na wahala me and that person go get. Useless thing Bros attitude is a reflection of leadership(coach), with the right coach these boys can do far better than this. We said it earlier that Amodu has lost touch with reality, but NFF came to defend him. See the mess we find ourselves now. Now our qualification is no longer in our hands, just like 2006, the only difference is that all teams have something to play till the last match hence tunisia might just stumble. BUT I DON COMOT MIND SINCE. |

While Nigeria and tunisia will be gunning for the world cup ticket, Mozambique and Kenya will fight for the Nations cup. At least Mozambique will have everything to play for when they host tunisia. |

Those that know this industry will confirm that EDW aside, any fair audit on abuse, insider dealings, and bad loans for the remaining banks will indicted at least half of them. And I mean it. |

agabaI23: My dear this case has been on since 2007 and Chelsea was no kept in the dark. FIFA did not just wake up to ban Chelsea. Investigation has been carried out so it is not a case of big man vs poor man as you tend to put it. Are we then ruling out the possibility that Fifa's ruling can be faulted and subsequently overruled? What was the role of the French FA in the deal? Did the FA not approve it? Has anyone heard chelsea's side of the story? My point is that a lot of responses so far are premised on the assumption that Chelsea(big spender) tried to oppress Lens( a seemingly small club) with their money . |

Nobody is asking the role played by the French FA in the deal. What we hear is just the typical Nigerian response whenever a rich man is in a dispute with a poor man--- It definitely will be that the rich man is trying to use his money to oppress and nothing else. Hence the rich is adjudged guilty even before listening to both parties. Even if chelsea is not the club you support , will it not be wise to wait till all the surrounding details are brought to the fore before statements are made? |

ObamaUS: I will defend the fundamental rights of anyone regardless of the alleged offence he may have committed.
As for my column last week, there was no where I suggested that the Bank MDs could not be sanctioned by the Central Bank of Nigeria. There was no where I said the MDs were not culpable in the acts that violated and compromised their positions as custodians of people’s money. There were mistakes made, like all humans.
But I insist that Sanusi, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, went overboard and certainly beyond his mandate. He apparently did not weigh his hasty actions against the general interest of our country as well as the historical dialectics of our nation. He would have realized the problems of Nigeria were far greater than that of those five bank executives. Scapegoatism has never worked in Nigeria. He should look back at the recent past when a few governors were being impeached in the middle of the night. And some Nigerians hailed the action. I will continue to say that we can’t set a whole village on fire just to catch a few rats. What have we gained in concrete terms? Nothing drastic has been done to investigate and prosecute the former President, the multitude of governors, ministers, legislators (States and Federal) special advisers, board members, and others who have served these past ten years. The same fate shall befall this crusade.
I believe Sanusi was too much in a haste to show his bite. If he was not in a hurry, he would have audited all the banks at once. And award penalties without favour or discrimination. The criminalization of a few people, when less than half of the banks have been audited is, to say the least, reckless and disastrous. There was no indication that he spent sufficient time with the indicted MDs to pursue the possibility of redemption.
The same Sanusi who told us at home that he would give the banks back to their owners if they can meet some stringent conditions went abroad to gleefully announce that the banks were up for sale. He must have been encouraged by the applause he got from the kill-and-go choir.
What stopped Sanusi from publishing the complete list of all debtors in all the banks? Why didn’t he throw all these debtors into jail the same way he dealt with the Bank MDs?
The global economic crisis was largely due to the subprime mortgage lending fiasco of the US economy, where banks greedily invested their deposits as loans to the mortgage sector. This was the same way our Nigerian banks made the terminal mistake of over-exposing themselves to the Stock Market. The higher the return in any business, the higher the risk. The crisis in America nearly wiped out the capital base of some of the biggest financial icons, such as Citibank, Bank of America, Goldman Sach. Also, top European Banks like UBS, BNP Paribas, Deutsche Bank, and Barclays were affected. Their home governments rose to the challenges by rolling out workable packages, under strict terms, but without our own theatre of the absurd. Foreigners were not invited to take over the banks, and their assets were not sold off, like it is being threatened in Nigeria. Those foreign banks have since recovered and are bouncing back to profitability, in an atmosphere devoid of rancor and gangsterism.
Finally, I'm not a lawyer, but I have a fair knowledge of Jurisprudence. There are three principles that we must consider. The first is NEMO JUDEX IN CAUSA SUA (A man shall not be a judge in his own cause). It is difficult to see Sanusi as a total and unbiased umpire. The second is NEMO DAT QUOD NON HABET (You can’t give out what you don’t own!), which is what Sanusi has done by sacking the MDs. And by dishing out their banks to outsiders of his choice, without making recommendations to their board, or giving them warnings and deadlines; by harassing them and their homes with forces of coercion, by freezing their personal accounts, by publishing confidential bank statements of clients etc, he has already convicted them! The damage is total and almost irreversible in a country like ours, even if any of them is cleared tomorrow. In fact, what Sanusi has breached is the third principle of AUDI ALTERAN PARTEM RULE (The right to fair-hearing), and some of us are too forward-looking to allow such lawlessness to stick. Sanusi has combined the duties of a Complainant, Prosecutor, Advocate for the Prosecutor, Star witness, the Bailiff, and the Gaoler. It is very tragic.
FROM THIS DAYONLINE, 4TH SEPT.I think this Dele guy is confused I think Dele momodu made valid points on the issue of the sacked MDs. |

nobilia: MEND should know that they do not have monopoly to arms. We all Nigerians can still bear arms. They should not in their dream fantasy think that they can hold this country to ransom. They are getting outta their boundary and it is time they know that Nigerians are now seeing them as opportunist criminals. They should close shop as they have come to their twilight or they will meet their looming darkness. So your point is that Government should not implement the recommendations of the EIA? I think the issue here is even beyond MEND, you can be sure that if Government feels the EIA will be overlooked for the sake of "National Interest", then people in the ND will have every reason to oppose it. The threat here (if not properly implemented ) to the people of the ND makes the degradation suffered as a result of oil exploration a dress reharsal. Its not about other tribes' ability to carry arms. |

I feel this man( Dele momodu) still does not get the point.
One positive , dele should take from all these critisms is that people somehow read his column in Thisday, and find it intellectualy stimulating somehow. He also seems to be bothered by the decadence that now colours anything Nigeria.
There is no crime in celebrating wealthy people if that is what he chooses to do. But when people find it difficult to reconcile the momodu-- Thisday columnist and the Momodu of OVATION , then it is only normal to ask questions.
From his response , he has moved his production office to Ghana because of PHCN (problem Has Changed Name), the same reason the PZs and Unilevers are giving. This as we know is due largely to corruption in government. Billions of dollars gone down the drain.
We will not be surprised if he chooses to show off the wealth of the same corrupt men in his OVATION magazine tommorrow, but I know he will be surprised if we start asking questions then. MAKE THIS MAN SHARP-UP ABEG. |

DayoCoker: This story and the Vanguard "Northern Agenda" report should be thrown into a dustbin. The promoters of this rubbish back their fiction with the question, "How did Vanguard predict Sanusi's actions if there was no agenda? The answer is simple: they didn't. At the time that report was published Dayo Coker had already embarked on a campaign to expose the crooked activities of Erastus Akingbola who was taking the bank down a precipice. Ditto Madam Ibru, whose bank appeared on a list I circulated on my blog.
These 5 bank chiefs knew their banks were in trouble and they planted that story as a preemptive measure. Any serious journalist could have surmised this by watching the Expanded Discount Window. Unfortuntely, the editors felt that they had to support their biggest benefactors and promoted the dubious theory of "demarketing".
The organizers of the annual Vanguard Bankers Awards charge 5 million for a table of eight. We don't need a homily from Jarus to understand that Vanguard's campaign is solely motivated by filthy lucre.
Daily Independent's campaign against Olojede is motivated by revenge.
In a few days, I will release a definitive article on the Nigerian financial sector.
Till then, I remain,
Dayo Coker
Truth lies in the nuances. Oga even if we have to discard the vanguard report , I doubt if journalist like you that fancy narrow reporting to suit your sponsors is the right person to tell us so. Why did you not choose to do an industry-wide appraisal of all the banks ? Why did you not tell us the level to which those you promote with your "professional know-how" have contributed to the mess in the industry by their indebtedness. Where in all you "prophesies" did you mention Union bank and Afribank? or your radar no reach there? Ok some banks are being audited now, can you tell us the status of those banks and how they will fair in the audit even before CBN moves again? |

Business › Re: Sanusi Canvasses Islamic Banking by naso2(m): 11:33pm On Aug 31, 2009 |
Ibime: A lot of people misunderstand the merits of Islamic banking.
Islamic banking completely forbids structured products i.e derivatives, futures, options, credit default swaps, etc. . . . anything that is structured around an underlying asset is haraam. . . . the only thing which is tradeable is the actual asset.
This means Islamic banking does not allow the economy to go through pronounced boom and bust cycles.
Unlike Western banking, Islamic banking does not encourage artificial demand - eg the artificial demand for houses that led to the current Economic crisis. Islamic banks always share the risk with their customers. ie they part-own the product until the customer pays it off. This shared risk nuances the bubble effect of speculation.
If Islamic banking was the world standard, it is not hard to argue that all the downturns, recessions and depressions that we have experienced in the world in the last 80 years would have been limited.
Go and study any economic crisis - from 1939 till date - they are always caused by speculative bubbles bursting - mortgages, savings and loans crisis, CDS crisis, tech bubble etc etc etc. . . . . they are always caused by the bottom dropping out of structured product markets. Then I think Islamic Banking in Nigeria will be a HIT , Just like the sharia PENAL code, which has alleviated poverty in the north. abi i lie? |
