Nairaland General › Re: My Near Death Experience With The Nigerian Police - DIARY Of A Jobless Youth by naturalwaves: 10:12pm On Aug 29, 2015 |
OP finished from Funaab. I really detest the Nigerian Police Force. In 2008 or thereabout, there was a day I got stopped by two policemen in front of a police station, they asked for my phone, I was searched and one of them brought out my mobile phone and started scrolling through my directories obviously looking for a foreign number so he could tag me as a "yahoo boy", he found none. By this time I was already getting furious at the stupidity of our police force cos I couldn't imagine how having a foreign number stored on one's phone automatically translates to being a fraudster. They paused for a while and asked....who you be? Identify yourself? Wey your I'd card? Thank God my mum insisted I take my I'd along before I left the house so, I had something to show them otherwise, probably I would have been tagged an armed robber and dragged into the station. Now, the moment they saw it was a student identity card, they came up with another infuriating remark. One of them said..."So, na you kill lecturer?" (Before that week, there had been a trending issue about a murdered lecturer). At that moment, I was about insulting him before I remembered how we have been warned at home never to argue with a man with a gun so, I chilled. He then said again "no be you kill lecturer?". I gently replied "No be me kill lecturer" and then I was given my card and my phone back and the other one said "just dey go", oya, dey go". Anytime I remember that incident, I feel so bad about the way a force that's supposed to protect us fabricates so much lies on innocent people. My friend's experience with SARS is worse (will share later); the kondo he got on his head from that encounter is yet to disappear after almost a year. |

Sirneij: You did a great job at Dejt4u! Thesame explanatory approach is needed here: 1.Find The set of values of x and y which satifies the equation <i>x2 - y - 1 =0</i> and <i>y-2x +2 =0</i>. 2.A canal has rectangular cross section of width 10cm and breadth 1m.If water of uniform density 1gm/cm^3 flows through it at a constant speed of 1000mm per minute, find the adjacent sea. 3.If the maximum value of y =1+hx-3x^2 is 13,find h. 4.If a circular paper disc is trimmed in such a way that its circumference is reduced in ratio 2:5,in what ratio is the surface area reduced? Cross check your questions. If a circular object is trimmed, the circumference should reduce and not increase. I don't think that 2:5 is correct except if 5 represents the old circumference and 2 the new one. Kindly recheck or paste the snapshot. |

Antoinne: I suppose the way you were doing it was to resolve dx on one hand, and dy on the other to the lines at y=0 & x=0 respectively, so that you obtained dSx = sqrt(5)dx & dSy = sqrt(5)dy
And you then did, dS = dSx.dSy = 5dxdy. if this is how you did it, then you are wrong.
you should understand that even though, you had rightly resolved the elemental distances, you can't multiply then on that surface, because the surface is also bounded by y = 1-x (at z=0) which means in that plane, x is still dependent on y. If you had the snapshot below (Fig 1) where the elemental distance dy will not be dependent on x anymore on that surface, then it would have made sense.
So, it's easier to use vectors. Cos what you want to do is simultaneously apply the relationships given by the curves while still taking their dependences into consideration. In this way, you'd almost be resolving the surface itself dS and not the elemental distances.
Look at Fig2, where the same surface has been resolved onto the xy plane. On that xy plane, the last coordinate that will make the area the same is (2,2,0). So, if you had an elemental area on that surface dS1, you can then obtain the angle between that area and the surface with the coordinate (1,1,2). Note that that is a mirror image of the surface in question, but in a different quadrant.
So, the angle between the two surfaces will be (-1.5i-1.5j).(-0.5i-0.5j+2k) = sqrt(4.5).sqrt(4.5).cos(phi) cos(phi) = 1/3.
dS.cos(phi) = dS1 dS = dS1/cos(phi) = 3dS1
dS1 = dxdy
So, dS = 3dxdy.
This elemental area will be the same as the elemental area on the main surface (they are simply mirror images).
Note: you could have resolved to the other side (270-360deg), and you'd have the same answer Nice analysis. Bravo! |

The questions shouldn't be abstract and should not be set in such a way that those that aren't mathematic major won't be able to attempt it. There are also a lot of basic yet tough questions( much of those should be considered for the quiz so that a wide variety of participants can take part for a reasonable period and not just abscond at the sight of complex advanced mathematics questions.
I love the style that was introduced to the last quiz competition where at a stage, each participant gets a unique question which must be answered within a stipulated time after which the question will be opened to other participants as a bonus. this should be continued.
At a latter and very important stage of the competition, all answers should be sent to a mail address and not posted here in order to avoid dubbing by participants at the nick of time. Last time, there was a funny scenario where some participants started getting the same answer as the the one that was posted by a participant, only for all of them to be wrong. If they were correct, it would have been free points so the email address option comes handy here.
Sometimes, I think network issues should be considered, could get so bad at times thus, the time for submitting answers should be extended a little bit. #The major downside of an online quiz is that there might be multiple persons behind a moniker or several solvers as participants aren't visible# Still fun though.
Lastly, please, the competition shouldn't take place during work hours. Night time will be the best during workdays.
I want to be a participant. |

anangboy: At the risk of posing a self-serving bias, i will say computer science should occupy a high position there. Computer science is entirely applied mathematics. And if you do not know what my last sentence means, sorry l can't save you.
STEM fields are generally nothing to fvck with.
I also remember a Prof of Maths used to say if he wants to fill a vacancy in mathematics, he can only hire a mathematician or a computer scientist. Well said. I can't imagine someone coming up with such thought of mathematics being tougher than computer science. Physics is not even on the OP's list and it s far far tougher than mathematics. |

dicksonxtreme: Computer science it's not tough compared to Geophysics and mathematics
I'm a computer science student I know what I'm saying... My roommate is doing geophysic and I see his lecture notes and I feel sorry for him Every computer science student I knew in my school is a a good mathematician and we shared exactly the same courses with mathematics departments up till 200 level and there was no big deal. only courses like abstract algebra, groups and rings, real analysis posed a little problem. I saw their notes up to the finals and nothing special. the mathematics students fairly get past a credit in computer based courses but we aced almost all their courses superbly well. Infact,it became so embarassing at a time that the mathematics lecturers tongue-lashed their students for always lagging behind computer science students for all shared courses. Truth is,all good computer scientists are excellent mathematicians whereas, the reverse can't be said about mathematicians. Computer science requires a high level of cerebral capacity and IQ unlike maths where,if you are good at Lacram Lapour, you would be good to go. If truly you study Csc and still think maths is tougher than what you do then it must be one of these 3 things; 1)Your Csc lecturers are half baked. 2)Your lecturers do not cover the subject matter well and only expose you to a minute part of what you should know. 3)Your tests and examinations have been so watery such that it is no where near what it is supposed to be talkless of being world standard. |
