Paul Kagame, President of the Republic of Rwanda addresses the 67th UN General Assembly on September 25, 2012 in New York City.

Even the Rwandan President had more audience. embarassed

I feel sorry for GEJ, in addition to being disgraced by his countrymen who insult him daily, he has to deal with his wife's illness. May God/Allah give him the strength to deal with all the pressure.

Having said that, I think by 2015 we would have had more than enough of his Presidency. He is not cut out for the job at all. SMH

Perceived effective measures are sometimes put in place to bridge gaps by leaders. Any such measure can be reexamine 50, 60 years later with 20/20 hindsight.

The great Sardauna of Sokoto had the best interest of his people heart unlike any modern day Nigerian rouguish leader.

How do you protect such areas against flooding occassioned by tropical rains? I hope you realize that the runoffs must end in the Atlantic ocean.

Choose one:

(a)Do not protect your coast line and lose your beaches, the surrounding areas, and lives.

(b)Save your coastline and save the surrounding areas and lives.

Eze dummy Onlytruth prefers option (a), in a clear case of idiocy and senselessness. You are a fool if you think the way to protect coastlines require the entire coastline to be sealed off. I thought you were more enlightened, unfortunately I don't have time to educate you further on this matter, go and read up.

Onlytruth: The guy understood things like the fact that Nigeria's coastal areas will be swallowed up soon, and that upland Eastern Nigeria may be their only hope of survival then.
He also lamented the fact that Nigerians are so illiterate and cannot see beyond 5 years at a time.
Eze gburugburu, you are a dummy, dummy!

Your hopes, wishes, and aspirations are centered on the coastal areas of Nigeria being swallowed up, rendering the Eastern Nigeria our only hope, ko?

I suppose you are not aware of the 'Great Wall of Lagos which will be over 8 kilometres long and made from tens of thousands of concrete blocks (accropodes) weighing 5 tons each which interlock loosely to form an effective barrier that dispels the force of the waves and provides the primary armoured sea defence'.

F.Y.I Similar techniques will be used to protect other coastal areas. The Greate Wall of lagos, partially funded by Yar'Adua grants, was already well over 3 kilometres long and is growing at the rate of about 6 metres a day as of March this year.

Siddone for diaspora dey wait make things fall apart and I promise you say you go dey dia for the next 50 years and One Nigeria go dey kampe.

To those who are waiting for dry season before reaching the conclusion that this is an abandoned project, una go wait tire. It is quite obvious that many of you do not know anything about road construction.

When you pour 15 tipper loads of gravel/sand/earth on a road, you do it in conjunction with a construction vehicle which will spread the gravel/sand arround as soon as each tipper os offloaded. You don't bring tipper loads of sand, pour them, and leave the sand to stand for months forming the eyesore in the photographs. Now it will cost more to spread the sand because you will need an excavator to dig the darn thing up before you can do any further work.

This is a disgrace to everyone involved in this project.

Gbawe: You Yoruba guys should know better !!! Are some of you even genuine Lagosians or just talking vacuously for the sake of taunting others ? Do you even want a more humane future where everyone coexist in peace and harmony? Has NL now ruined some of you to the extent you don't do reality any more? I went to school (Primary and secondary) with many Igbos, Hausas, Fulanis, Edos et al. Many were born and bred in Lagos. They are my friends and fellow Lagosians. You guys cannot just wake up and disenfranchise them like that. Nations are progressing mentally and physically yet Nigeria is regressing. So-called educated men are talking like savages.

Of course I don't agree that Lagos should be swamped with refugees but it has been disgusting to read, throughout the forum, nauseating talk about "first class, second class, third class Lagosians" et al. It is sad to note the vainglorious sense of entitlement and "first class" superiority some of you feel. Many of you, in the diaspora, would be the same posters to vehemently blast white supremacists as "evil racist" , fit only for the gas chamber, because those caucasians consider themselves first class citizens and refuse to accept that they have no greater entitlement than others born and bred , or have lived for a long time, in the same area as them. Just because you are white does not make you more of a "Londoner" than Mo Farah who came there , from Somalia, at the age of 8.
One of the best posts I've read on NL this year, very reasonable and sensible. Very cool. smiley

naptu2: These laws have existed for decades. I remember the warfare that we use to have around Dodan Barracks back when the military ruled the country.

Street trading has always been illegal. However, wives of soldiers @ Dodan Barracks and policemen at Mopol 2 always strayed beyond the Mammy/Obalende Market onto Keffi Street. Local Government officials would arrive to evict them and warfare would erupt.

That market was one of Tinubu's first targets when he became governor. He got the service chiefs to ensure that they stay within the confines off Mammy Market. Ditto for Falomo Barracks. One major flashpoint has been Yaba Rail Line Market.

From memory, governors Jakande, Mudashiru, Akhigbe, Rasaki, Oyinlola, Marwa, Tinubu and now Fashola have enforced these laws. The main difference that came with the 2003 amendment was the choice between jail, rehabilitation and repatriation.

The local governments have also enforced these laws.

The laws actually existed before independence.
The above does not mean that the laws are constitutional under current dispensation, only the supreme court can make that determination. Sooner or later a challenge of these laws will be instituted.
Politics › Re: Lagos Deports Anambra Refugees by nduchucks: 7:28pm On Sep 26, 2012
naptu2: These laws have been in existence since colonial time. Differennt administrations have adopted various strategies to combat the offences (Colonel Marwa used soldiers).

Begging = pan handling is against the law (in Lagos and most cities of the world)

Street trading is illegal (that's actually one of the first Lagos State laws that I learnt as a child).

Psychotics are meant to be in mental institutions

There are also associated offences (eg offences against the child rights act).

See environmental laws of Lagos State.
Some of your unconstitutional laws will be challenged soon enough. Do not assume that they are not unconstitutional because they are yet to be challenged. Lagos state is on the wrong side of the law in this case. State laws do not supersede the constitution.
Politics › Re: Lagos Deports Anambra Refugees by nduchucks:
naptu2: I'm going to recount from memory because I'm on the move at the moment, but I'll try to get articles, etc when I get to a place of rest. The sources for my memory are newspaper articles, documentaries of Lagos Television, news reports and even nairaland.

The Process

1)The environmental laws of Lagos State (laws against street trading, begging, etc) have been in place at least since the 1970s (probably earlier). They've been reviewed quite a number of times (Akhigbe, Rasaki, Tinubu).

2) The process was fully established by the Tinubu Administration.

3) Beggars, street traders, destitutes, area boys, psychotics, etc are arrested by the Task Force on Environmental Offences.

4) They are given a choice: (a) go to prison (b) go to rehabilitation centre (c) return to your state of origin.

A) The law stipulates punishment for those who commit these offences. They include prison term, fine, forfeiture of goods.

B) Rehabilitation centres were set up (the most famous/infamous was at Ita-Oko Island). At the centres the inmates are sorted. They are tested for drugs. Those who are drug addicts are detoxified. Those who have mental illnesses are sent to the asylum. The inmates (apart from the lunatics) are then taught skills (skills acquisition centre) so that they'll be able to earn a living. When they complete the course, they are given a loan with which they will start a business and made to sign an undertaking that they will not return to the streets.

C) Return: Those who choose to return are transported to their state of origin. The state government is usually informed ahead of time (although I know of 3 instances in which their state governments claimed that they were not informed) so that they can make arrangements to cater for the people. Most of the people who have chosen to return are from the northern part of the country (note: they chose to return).
What you state above is nothing more than the unlawful arrest/imprisonment and the restriction of the fundamental rights to freedom of movement, of the people you listed in item (3) above, for no just cause. If the people Lagos state labelled as Beggars, street traders, destitutes, area boys, psychotics comitted no crime, then the state has no right whatsoever to arrest or detain them. Thus any subsequent action, such as giving these people the option of returning to their states of origin is null, void, illegal, and unconstitutional.

Since when has it become a crime to be poor? Nonesense.

Onlytruth: For me, this is the BEST OPPORTUNITY so far ever presented to us in the East since we started asking for a structural change within Nigeria.
Quote me on this.

If I were Gov Peter Obi, my next action (after complaining about this publicly) would be to erect an "Immigration border post" at Niger bridge head entrance at Onitsha to "vet and verify" that peoples entering the East are properly identified, and their mission/business in the East well document, before continuing their journey.
Anyone who cannot explain his ties to the East or his mission to the East would he summarily repatriated back to Lagos or wherever he/she may be coming from. cool

Anambra state is a strategic state (being the entrance point to the East), so Peter Obi would effectively be the new governor of the East (at least per immigration matters of the East). After I would have done this for a week or two, watch as the federal government would speedily intervene to call Fashola to order.

Nigeria has simply refused to talk about how we continue as one. Fashola's actions (though very cowardly, duh! undecided ) is an opportunity which should be used to force a national dialogue in Nigeria.

I hope Peter Obi never misses this opportunity. He has no presidential ambition that I know of, and he is not going for a second term as governor; so he can almost do anything politically in Nigeria and come out unscathed.

Obi, I Onlytruth, am available to offer my services at that border (bridge head) if you don't know how to do it.
Let the chips fall wherever they may! cool

Signed,

Onlytruth, Ndu di n'eziokwu 1 of Igboland, Eze Ndigbo Nairaland. cool cool cool
You are a senseless and foolish Eze. You want to respond to an unconstitutional act with your own unconstitutional and criminal act ko? Tell Obi to go and erect the border and see how quickly JTF will blow it up to smitterines. mumu

This is once again an unconstitutional act and a violation of the right to freedom of movement of the Anambrarians. This is similar to the law passed by Ogun which seeks to do the same to Fulani herdsmen. This is a troubling trend coming out of the SW.

These SW leaders may very well be rascals as stated by GEJ during the election campaign.

pazienza: Ojukwu's northern birth and western influence made him see the match to lagos differently, he tagged the yorubas as friends. An igbo leader born and breed in igboland ( orji uzor kalu comes to mind) wouldn't have handed that mission to banjo,he would have approached that mission differently.

I think,we should never allow people not born in igboland to lead us again, there must be a reason why americans don't allow citizens not born in USA to lead them.
Well someone has a different perspective without throwing tantrums or feeling that the OP attacked ndiigbo. You must be one of the few mature Igbo boys here. I'd however warn you to be careful pointing out some of the blunders of Ojukwu's because you are likely to be insulted and called a traitor, efulefu, and other weird names.

I kind of disagree with some of your statements. The vast majority of the Igbo leaders of today whose perpectives and experiences are limited to ala Igbo have failed abbysmally and continue to do so. A quick review of the governors in ala igbo from the current and lest 4 election cycles will not support your stance. There are tons of other examples.
