Jobs/VacanciesRe: Between A Multi National And Lecturing Job by nervorum: 11:48am On Nov 25, 2015

I'm married with 2 kids. I lost my job 3 years ago when my company was restructuring.
So I know how tough it is to be jobless especially with a family that is looking up to you for provision.

On the 15th Nov. God blessed my hustle and i got an offer from one of the high institution in my state as an assistant lecturer. I was very happy when i collected the offer, it rekindled my hope for the future because i have longed to become a lecturer since i was in school as it will give me opportunity to upgrade my certificates and to even study to Phd level with abundant of scholarships at their disposal.

But events took another turn this week when i was called by a coy i attended it's interview 2 years a go, they sent me an sms inviting me to come and meet their boss for final stage of the interview, to cut the story short....... i was offered another job with a mouth watery pay 3x the govt job, i'm to resume work on the 11th of January 2016.

My delimma now is to choose between a job with average pay(lecturing) while career growth is gradual or go for the money with opportunity to travel to other countries and a world class exposure.

Please Senior Men in the house advice me, i need the money but i'm worried because where i was working 3 yrs ago i was well paid, things were moving smoothly but when the time came to downsize, it can take anybody, matured advice gentlemen!
Pls follow your heart.if you have longed to be a lecturer, pls take that option.

Two years ago, i had a dream job that was not paying much, but it was all i wanted to do.i was happy.i gained many skills and experience.i imparted too many people un a short while..8 months later, i had another offer with a jumbo pay package and an official ride, it was irrestible, and a one-in-a-lifetime opportunity.i was confused, i sought counsel, and eventually i took it..

Two months into the job, i got bored, tired and angry.i found it difficult leaving the house every day..i longed to return back to where i was coming from to continue from where i stopped, but alas, too late..

just one month into the new job, my contemporaries were i was coming from all got automatic promotion to senior positions..I learnt to be patient and go for what i truely love, for therein i would find fulfillment.
As young people we mostly think money, but thats a mistake. If you do what you love, money will come, eventually, your job would be like a vacation, you will not struggle.

Back to you..take the lecturing job because:

You have always longed to teach

Job security

Prospect is hugh

Think retirement

HealthRe: How St.nicholas Hospital Doctors Killed Chaz B By Chinyere Roselin Chukuma by nervorum: 12:41pm On Oct 20, 2015
AbuEzeFemi:
My husband called me at about 6:40 AM, Friday the 21st of November 2014, from work. He asked me to come and pick him up, that he was not feeling too good. I left with the driver to get him. When I got there, he was too uncomfortable, and he asked me to take him home. But on our way home, I noticed that he was in pains, so I asked the driver to reverse the car and head instead to the hospital (St. Nicholas Hospital in Lagos).
On reaching there, we met Judith, the receptionist. I asked if there was a Doctor around. This was around 7 PM. She said yes and after some time we were asked to go into Room 2. Right there we met a young Doctor called Dr. Ogidigben Kevwe. He asked a few questions that I answered while my husband was wallowing in pains. He (Kevwe) opened an emergency file because according to him, my husband’s file was locked up in Dr. Bamgboye’s office, and no one has access to that office. I told Dr. Kevwe that my husband had incisional hernia surgery done a few months back at the same hospital, August to be precise and it was performed by one Dr. Mohan an India man, and Dr. Balogun at St. Nicholas Hospital. He started to examine him. He then left us in his office and said he was coming back.

He came back after some minutes and said he was trying to reach Dr. Balogun from the reception, but he is not getting through. So I used my husband’s phone and dialed Balogun and got through. At this point, I gave the phone to Dr. Kevwe, and he started explaining to Dr. Balogun, what he thought was the problem. Balogun on the other end asked if my husband was in pains, and Kevwe said yes. Dr. Kevwe told Dr. Balogun that he was suspecting intestinal obstruction. Dr. Balogun asked if there was any swelling around where the incision was done, but Dr.Kevwe said no. Balogun asked if there was any reddish sign around the same area, and Kevwe said no. So Dr. Kevwe suggested giving him antibiotics, but Balogun said that they have to be careful what they give him, since he is a post kidney transplant patient. Balogun asked them to give him a particular injection twice to ease the pains, and he said that they should observe him till the next morning. So I left to go get him what he had asked for (his tea and his stockings). On my way around Bonny Camp, I got a call from a strange number, when I picked up; it was Dr. Kevwe, on the other end. He asked me to turn back to come pick up my husband, and I asked why?

He (Kevwe) said that my Husband is feeling much better, and wants to go home. I asked the driver to reverse and head back to the hospital. And on getting there, I went in and asked the Dr. again why he wants me to take him home. He repeated once again that he feels much better and I asked Kevwe if he was asking me to take him home because he thinks he feels better or that the hospital doesn’t have a bed for him. I asked this because the nurse had mentioned earlier that she needed to check for bed space. Kevwe at this point told me that my Husband would be fine, he asked me to take my Husband home and bring him the following morning. Meanwhile, before then, Kewe wrote a prescription of drugs for my husband which I took to the pharmacist and when the lady there saw it, she asked which Dr. I saw. I told her that it was Dr. Kewe. She moved over to the other side and called the Dr’s office. They both argued about the drug that he wrote, she then gave me just1 tablet of Exforge. When my husband got up from the hospital bed, he staggered and I held him and asked if he’s fine. The Dr. said that it’s the injection that was given to him that he would be fine. So I took him home.

We got home. And just about 15minutes after, my husband said he felt like throwing up. I brought a bowl to him, and he vomited, and he felt a bit better. He slept for some time and got up in excruciating pain.
Immediately I jumped into my clothes and then called Dr. Balogun, to say that we are on our way back to the hospital. He said no problem that the doctor will be waiting for me. I asked, which doctor? And he said the doctor is their senior surgeon by the name Dr. Fadiran. Balogun said that Dr. Fadiran was the doctor on call. We got to the hospital in less than 20 minutes; my husband came down from the car himself. He walked into the hospital by himself before he was wheeled into the ER. Then came Dr. Kevwe, and I asked him about the senior surgeon, and he told me that he would be coming very soon. I wasn’t too happy with that, as I had mentioned to Dr. Balogun that my husband was in serious pains. I expected to see a consultant like he said. Kevwe started by
trying to put him on a drip that took forever, as he was unable to successfully get his veins while my husband was languishing in pain.

My husband kept telling them (DR. Kevwe and the nurse) that he wants to throw up or use the restroom, and he would be fine. He kept saying that if he throws up he will be fine. Meanwhile, Dr. Kevwe was taking instructions on the phone from Dr. Fadiran. This was when I asked when the Dr. would come. I kept asking, “when will the doctor come?” And Dr. Kevwe said Dr. Fadiran asked him to get my entire husband’s information. DR. Kevwe told me that they are
waiting for the Radiologist and the Anesthesiologist, and none of these people showed up.

My husband kept on saying that he wants to throw up. But then, Dr. Kevwe asked the nurse to give him an injection, I asked what the injection was for? And he said it will stop him from vomiting. He became so uncomfortable and was losing his breath. They put him on oxygen, but I guess he was already choking.

Meanwhile, Kevwe was still taking instructions from Dr. Fadiran on the phone. At this time, he started gasping for air. Meanwhile, before then, another doctor showed up. I don’t know his name, but he’s average in height and dark complexioned. He inserted a suction tube into his mouth, but I guess he was two hours or more late with that. Because if that was done when I brought him to the hospital that morning, he would have been here with me today.

If Dr. Fadiran were at the hospital, even after he was told that it was an emergency; my husband would have been here with me. If the anesthesiologist was at the hospital, he probably would have been here with me. If the radiologist were around on that morning to at least see what was happening inside of him, he probably would have been here with me. If Dr. Kevwe knew exactly what he was doing that morning without taking instructions from Dr. Fadiran on the phone, with an emergency case right in front of him, my husband would have been here. My husband died of total negligence on the part of St. Nicholas Hospital, and I know it. Like I said earlier, the doctor was 2 hours plus late with the suction, because, at this time, the nurse was already calling my husband’s name, shouting “Mr. Charles, Mr. Charles!” He was given four adrenaline injections. The drip wasn’t going at all, all this while lest I forget. I watched my husband struggled to breath. I watched him fight for his life, and I was right there when he died. And even though they were busy with CPR, I knew when he passed on because immediately he stopped struggling, fluid started gushing out of his mouth and nose, I knew that was it. That was the same fluid that was choking him. If there were a senior consultant or surgeon at the hospital as at when I brought him, he probably, would have been helped. In between all this, Dr. Kevwe at a time said to Dr. Fadiran on the phone that he should come now as the patient is in a critical condition. He said to the same Dr. Fadiran that 11 O’clock might be too
late. I brought my husband at about 6 AM to St. Nicholas Hospital and he died at about 9.30AM without receiving prompt and adequate care.

Human life cannot continue to be lost soo cheaply in Nigerian Hospital, people must be made to account for their actions as professionals hence I have contacted my Lawyers to investigate the cause of death as he has died with our dreams, aspirations, and vision and planned future together.

So sad.its really unfortunate.

Expectedly so many would comment from point of view of ignorance, blaming the young chap on call that day.

Rule # 1: do not administer antiemetics for intestinal obstruction, gastric decompression would have saved the day until the attending arrives.

Who takes the blame for the outcome of the ill timed events?

The young doctor, who would be judged harshly, who was taking instructions from his superior?

The consultant general surgeon who probably was not employed full time at d hosp and so did not stay the night, and perhaps was somewhere else in d middle of a procedure?

The anaesthesiologist who probably was also not on full time employment who may not also knw if d surgeon would be taking the patient in, who may also be piloting a procedure somewhere or is it the radiologist.

I believe if d needed hands were on full time employment, perhaps they would been on ground around that time, especially the surgeon and at least a radiographer.

Even at that, there should have been a senior more experienced resident doctor on call to guide and save d day in unexpected cases like this.

I think the hospital should take this as an opportunity to review their processes.

Does she have a case? Difficult to say, sometimes you need to hear d other party and professionally review the case and what was done to establish negligence.

He probably died from aspiration; Mendelson syndrome, due to obstruction, maybe from a previous surgery, maybe from renal complication.

Precious to d Lord is d death of a saint. Chaz B imparted lives, he loved d Lord, he lived well, he led a purposeful life.

Even after taking allergy history, one could still experience this.

Mind you, history taking is a story of what the patient has experienced before, so could be that he doesn't know himself to have any allergies to allopurinol nor Sulphur drugs.

A colleague of mine had the same Steven Johnson Syndrome after taking ART for PEP, and that doesn't make the drug company liable or the prescribing doctor stupid, it's one of those adverse reactions that occur in life.

Being enlightened, he simply stopped the drug and was managed intensively.

Acute Boils are caused by Stapphylococus aerus which can be treated with Ampiclox. But when you go for a medical test they will bill you to the high heavens after scribbling unreadable nonsense on paper. With the help of Joseph Edgar – a popular blogger and investment banker , www.metronaija.com was able to get this very surreal tale of a banker, Charles Oben, whose life took a dramatically destructive turn in the course of seeking a healthy life.
https://insidemainland.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/charles.png
A healthy Charles Oben
It started when Charles who worked with the UBA was posted to Burkina Faso and in his usual meticulous self visited a Cardiologist for a routine check. They found out that his urea level was high and the drug Zyloric (manufactured by Glaxo Smithkline (GSK) Pharmaceuticals) was prescribed. He bought the drug for about N1,300 and dutifully took administered dosage. However in less than 36 hours his life was turned into a living hell.
https://insidemainland.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/GSK-4-300x225.jpg
Blisters, skin peeling, eyes destroyed, bleeding from everywhere, bed sores and everything imaginable became his plight. His wife Joan flew in, saw her husband and melted. His children came in and ran away. Mirrors where kept away from him.
https://insidemainland.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/GSK-2-300x225.jpg
Charles condition is known as the Stephen Johnson Syndrome (SJS) typically caused by a severe allergic reaction to a medication. SJS usually begins with a Stevens Johnson Syndrome rash that can lead to blistering, severe peeling and open sores. The condition is a serious and potentially life-threatening disease .
Charles was eventually evacuated to the UK with the private efforts of Joan and his family and there he received succor but with lasting side effects. He has had two cornea replacement surgeries and much more devastating is the fact that he cannot shed a tear for the rest of his natural life. He has been confined to the use of artificial tear inducing drugs which he buys from America at the cost of $200 monthly.
He has dragged Glaxo Smithkline the manufacturer of the drug to court for the irreparable damages to his life.
Joan, Charles’ dedicated wife wants the Nigerian government to push the pharmaceutical companies in the country to take proactive steps in warning consumers not only about the side effect of their drugs, but also about the severity that such side effects may escalate.
https://insidemainland.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/Joan-Oben-300x300.jpg
She said, “drug companies will stop taking advantage of the populace. That legislation should force them to write the warnings in the right language and in the right context in the leaflet. If Zyloric, or any of its other commercial names can possibly lead to SJS, which can lead to blindness and death, it should say so on the drug and it should say so in the local language. English for Nigeria.”

While i repect your opinion, its important we put things in perspective as we report.

Reading this piece, one would think the drug he took was substandard or that GSK made a bad 'drug'

Every drug/medicament is potentially toxic, however we admininster them if the benefit outweighs their side effects or in some cases, adverse effect.

Zyloric is a brand of allopurinol.

One of the adverse effects of allopurinol in humans is that it can cause extensive epidermal necrosis aka Stevens Johnsons syndrome. The incidence is low, but anybody could be in this unfortunate minority.

Who would develop certain reaction to a supposedly safe medication would depend on genetic makeup mostly, and other factors (idiosyncratic).

That is why its advisable to immediately stop any drug you react to and importantly, report any adverse reaction.

I wish him well.

I hope we all learn that every drug is potentially 'dangerous'

Ps: always read drug labels to know what to expect in worst case scenrio.i hope he wins his case against GSK

You know its not right what you are doing to yourself. The tragedy is that you are spreading it subtlely.

You are 'eating up' your future today. Its your choice to stop or continue..really

Just so you know..tramadol is a 'dangerous' medication.
Its an opoid that works by altering very important brain neurotransmitter and their receptors..You depend on it, you may depend on it to perform certain function for the rest of your life. Its unfortunate you could get it without a doctors prescription.

If you are serious about stopping what you know its bad, you will not need to come here to ask people to tell you to stop what you know its bad.

Its such a shame in this hopeless country.
You need to interact with medical students, especially those in state owned institutiins to know what pains they pass thru due to prolonged stay in school from lack of accreditation.

RomanceRe: Should A Man Define A Woman? by nervorum: 6:13pm On Jul 22, 2015
Should a man define a woman? No.
Woman are uniquely created and destined to make impact. A woman can achieve her fullest potential.

However, a woman cannot feel complete without a man.
No matter how 'successful' the woman is, or how much she hides it. Both gender were uniquely designed to complement each other to achieve their individual divine mandate, however not just any man.

Why? Cos God made it so..' for your desire shall be to your husband'..

A woman should not be defined by a man. she can be successful without a man, but not complete without one..

For more info visit: http://abujavisitorsguideforum.com/index.php?topic=76.0
The seminar on egg preservation is at the instance of Nisa Premier hospital, Abuja.

I encourage as many as possible to attend.

While i acknowledge that assisted reproduction is expensive, its too expensive and beyond the reach of the middle class at that hospital.

Even the egg preservation they are introducing, very good, is a minimum of one hundred and ten thousand naira per year. This is only for storage and exclusive of other treaent before the harvesting. This is quite exhorbitant.

Assisted reproduction in Abuja is cheaper at the national hospital, i wish they can develop capacity to commence egg/sperm storage. That way too many people will be helped
HealthRe: Is It Possible For A Hiv Positive Man Not To Pass It To His Wife? by nervorum: 2:06pm On Jul 10, 2015
Too many people on social media say what they are not sure of.

No it is not possible, if the couples have not been using 'protection'.

That the women tested negative today does not mean the woman may not have the virus.

The common tests available detect the Hiv antibody, not the antigen. Therefore the body must produce these antibodies over time to be detected by the test reagent. This is called the latent or window period. The point where the body produces enough antibodies to thevirus is called seroconversion.

If the woman have been having unprotected intercourse with the husband within the last 6months, its unlikely she does not have it, its also possible she will not test positive for reasons as above.

Polymerase chain reaction that will test for viral antigen is more definitive to prove at this point. Unfortunately pcr is not routinely done to test for the virus.

Let her go for another test in six months. Its not yet uhuru..Safe to commence on post exposure prophylaxis for her.

That the husband is coming sick implies he maybe harbouring the virus for some time.

If the woman is 'negative', and the husband is becoming sick, then its likely the virus came from outside.
Why? Statistics show that majority of transmission (80-90% )is via sex; heterosexual, followed by homosexual and then high risk pple like drug junkies. Blood transmission and the rest are uncommon and in the minority.

When we stay mutually faithful, or practise safe sex, we protect ourselves, partners and families.

Finally, HIV is real but HIV is not a Death sentence!!

Spread the word, not the virus.

[quote author=AcesIni post=34871757]a girl posted the following about sex on facebook and it's causing a debate. what do you think [/quot

Don't we just look for 'good' reasons to legitimize immorality in this generation..sex is very important in marriage. However, both the penis n vagina will perish, but the standard of God will not change..

Sex is intended for marriage, by the power that designed it to so be. Any thing short of this is immoral irrespective of the soundness of the argument, civilization, or human philosophy

I agree. Both himself and the wife, in fact.

But mehn, he needs to be careful and really wise here - what if the wife is telling the truth? I must be honest here though, from my limited knowledge of these things it is IMPOSSIBLE for a carrier and a non-carrier to produce a sickler - Mendel's laws of genetics would have to be rewritten. But you know what they say, never say never.

Now that I think of it, the gender of a foetus is dependent on similar genetic laws: the man gives one from his (xy) and the woman gives one from her (xx), so the offspring is either (xx) x-from dad and x-from mum, or (xy) y-from dad and x-from mum. But every once in a crazy while, an (xxy) or something weird like that is produced, and that's how you get hermaphrodites. So... oga needs to be careful with his decision. By the way, has the woman ever given him cause to doubt her fidelity? One doesnt just throw away a 10-yr-old marriage like that.
This is very strange, near impossible, thgh i agree, NEVER SAY NEVER IN MEDICINE.

People may lie, forge, cut corners, science does not.One of d couples knw d truth.

Been a lot of similar clinical cases, but d truth always come out.science was always correct.

Again i dont knw what paternity test was done, but a DNA testing is what is needed. This would unravel d mystery.

The labs whr these are done is anoda thing, depending on wat d couple may stnd to gain or lose if d truth is established. If they are serious, i wld recommend Pathcare.

The truth may not be enough to break d marriage in my opinion. It largely depends on d couples..Perhaps this attitude would hlp d truth to come out.

ONE OF THE COUPLES IS NOT TELLING THE TRUTH!!

Dear Colleagues,

I thought it important for primary fellowship candidates, whether National or West Africa, to have a meeting place, where we can network, share challenges and provide solution/help/advise for each other.

Please if you have any useful information that can help anyone, kindly share.

As doctors, i know we are different; we would be civil and respect each others opinion on this platform.

Cheers.
