India is very interesting. A shocking side-by-side co-habitation of technology and poverty. It's unbelievable. You step out of the airport, that looks reasonably high-tech, and you literally step into Ojuwoye Mushin. Yes, that's just about the best description I can find. Or Oshodi before Fashola. Alarm dey tear this people no be small thing. But the city feels special, even magical. I no fit explain am. One kain natural beauty dey.

i dont know why northerners are so docile, the way these people allow themselves to be treated shocks me. There are some levels of respect/obeisance that should be reserved strictly for your parents. . .yep i'm the only southerner here and apart from being unnecessarily docile, er'one is always speaking in hausa, meinene? anyway sha trust me, i dey record any conversation wey i no fit jasi for onward transmission to my PA on launguage duties

Scheming and strategizing has been shifted to the next level, things are going much faster than i expected.

you somehow managed to avoid taking the entire foot off grin, but you still shot yourself though. . .do you know the difference between a privatized telecoms industry and what would happen in nigeria? in telecoms, govt didnt choose the price for them, they were allowed(within limits) to choose the price. In power however, it's the govt that has set the current prices and these prices are making PHCN run at a heavy loss, that is why privatization wont work, because whereas the telecoms companies all turned profits in less than 3 years, in power you'll turn a loss for close to 10 years.

However, i hear tariff increase in part of the power roadmap, that hopefully, is the key ingredient required for any privatization plan in nigeria to have a chance.

(BTW if a power company were to try to get it's capital back in 5years, y'all would have to pay an arm and a leg for electricity.)

what are their demands? the article you pasted above doesn't make sense. . .are the military saying they want to go back to the days of veterans taking over the streets in the name of unpaid pension? prior to PENCOM there was a lot of fraud going on at the military pensions board it's possible the anti-PENCOM people are those that stand to benefit from leaving things the way they were back then

the chairman of PENCOM said(and i tend to agree) if there are any issues they should be solved administratively instead of going through policy reversals the way hookers go through prophylactics.

meeennnn this strike was not a small thing o, the unions must have meant business, when we hadn't had light in the office by 2, i called the PHCN transmission station to ask them 'how far' and i was told that they weren't loaded(meaning the station was off) now that means that there was no electricity coming from shiroro, which in turn means that they probably switched off the generators, mennnnn that is some serious sturvs o. . .in my 4years in the system, i've never heard of them touch the generators in the name of strike o(especially since it takes around 48 hours to stabilize the grid after a collapse.)

the significance of this is that the ENTIRE abuja was in the dark, Transcorp Hilton, ICC and Aso villa(yep. . .that one wink) didn't have electricity, it is official o, the union people 'mean' Jonathan/sambo/PAC.

of which i suppose dey call all the people i know for PHCN to do "i just called to greet you sir", that monetization must enter my hand small o!

There is no need to even stray into operations as such would only prove an unecessary distraction. The point is we have more to gain and private investors have more to lose from this arrangement. I have not actually seen you attempt to dispute that. Whose money in capital investment is going to be lost if the distribution companies run inefficiently? People who are so worried about rich corrupt politicians buying up our infrastructure can sue them to court when we have the a judicial system that actually works. Till that day comes the people need light and whoever has the money to buy and run operations for a profit is free to do so. As long as government is there to regulate the market and the sector is liberated and open to other players somewhere down the line then so be it. Heck if government selling roads would mean we have good roads then so be it, I think Nigerians have had enough of government inefficiency.
yep the investors'll have more to lose, i never disagreed with that, my point was that we'd suffer as well. . . if where the money comes from doesn't matter, then why are the states being allowed only a minority holding in the distribution companies?

i'm all for the privatization, but the tariff needs to be sorted out first, and if government doesn't sort that out, then selling the distribution companies wont make much of a difference!

And who wants to throw money down the drain? I don't think you fully appreciate how reliant Nigeria is on generators. When NEPA went on strike who actually missed their services? MTN sinks huge money into running generators and also budget for that. Do you really understand how measly 4000MW for a country of over hundred million is? Such capacity is not enough to run industries (that have learnt not to rely on NEPA) and I can name cities in the world that generate more power than PHCN does for the whole country. The infrastructure is aged and needs upgrading. The grid is being upgraded. We have more to gain and investors have much more to lose if they fail. Selling of 11 distribution firms is just a start and you fail to realise that we do have a (by force by force) national grid, which means you don't need to live in the same state to get power from distribution companies there.
@skyblue
*sigh* trust me, i understand the nigerian power system very well, when you hear the term 'national grid' what the technical people primarily refer to is the transmission grid not the distribution grid, the distribution  zones are not interconnected the way you thing they are. I pasted that picture so you could see it was by regions not states, pray tell, when a region doesn't have enough power for it's own consumers why would it want to supply another region?

we're not talking about other cities in the world, we're talking about nigeria, those cities dont have the same issues that we have here.

i must say, you're starting to stray into operations and it's only fair to warn you that if you're planning to argue that with me, it wont be a fair fight in the least!

Eleven power distribution firms are being sold (not one). Again I repeat, it is not you or government that would be losing money or investment so wetin consain you? If they don't run the business efficiently they lose customers and more importantly to them, their financial investment goes down the drain. Na your money?
you fail to see my point, lose customers to who? the distribution companies are arranged regionally, so distribution companyA cant supply discoB's customers(see picture attached below), if you go back to generator, what's the point then?you'll merely be increasing your costs. The big companies might be able to afford that, but it'll most definitely put strain on a lot of nigerians.

you cant deal with power the way you'd deal with any other service because among others, power is a monopoly.

i think the issue here is that you dont know enough about the power sector to understand how things could possibly go wrong. if they lose their investment, then the economy will suffer worse that it's suffering now!

PoliticsRe: Government Approves Sale Of 11 Power Distribution Firms ! by netotse(m): 1:52pm On Aug 24, 2010

Wetin consain you consain whether it is people with 'stolen money'? That is the beauty of private enterprise. If they don't improve their business and please their customers they will lose their customer base to competition that would be willing to provide a better service, simple.
lose customers to who? guy, chill out now, this is electricity we're talking about o, not your run-of-the-mill service. . .they won't be losing jack to anybody. where the money comes from is an indicator of how the company might be run now. . .
Yes. Only those who've got money will be able to buy. Worry more about getting constant power supply. Abegi.
make that who've got money to waste. . .at the present tariff levels, it'll most likely be people who have money and are not really interested in quick returns because unless tariffs are increased before the sale, i doubt they'll be able to push through a tariff rise after buying the company and the only people i think that can pull that off are people that have stolen money. . .correct me if i'm wrong!
