@kobojunkie
from here it looks like all you're trying to do now is to shoot blackmann's idea down. So in simple english you're trying to say that he should wait until the nigerian government has a change of heart before he starts pursuing his dreams?

That's where budgeting and planning comes into play bro. the IT firm i worked with when i was in lagos some years back literarily ran on big generators, cos NEPA can never be relied on, and they were still providing services to its clients. Like i said, it will have to be part of ones budget and expenses till the situation of the power stabilizes(if it ever will).

And if u think about my post well, it will explain your second question too.
guy i agree with you, planning will be important, and since its computers and stuff u cld even use solar sef, cos computers dont use that much current, its all about the energy mix

Could it be that because we have very few complainants in the country, we are at this sorry pass after almost 50 years of ruling ouselves?

I think we need to give way for people who complain about bad leadership, corruption, ethnic bigotry, fraud, hooliganism, etc to come show how best this can be done so that we can get the needed support from the world over.

The OP surely got it all wrong from the start. Nigerians are not moaners. We have very few of them who are vocal. . . . who can voice out their disgust about the way they're being governed. And government and leaders are those that are the real problems of the country.
are you sure? you dont know ppl that will sit around and insult politicians all day and then go to the office the next day and inflate the price of an ink cartridge by 100%?

i'm getting sick and tired of the piss-pot that nairaland is becoming and it doesn't seem like the admin are ready to do anything about it, i understand we dont always have to agree but a situation whereby people just go about insulting other posters and their tribes shouldnt be allowed to go on.

I'm slowly begining to join the group of ppl that think that the mods are more interested in posting links to crappy posts on the Home page than to actually ensuring that the atmosphere in NL is conducive for anything or than sex/tribe/religion bashing.

I'm not trying to be rude here but the admins need to really wake up o, let us see what they're doing, a situation whereby you're being called an idiot just because you dont agree with someone else is untenable, unless of course the mods are comfy with the way things are going!

the posters point is that we spend too much time complaining about things and not enough time trying to fix them

for example: everybody complains that the nigerian police is corrupt and yet when they stop you, you will roger them peacefully and then go and start cursing behind their backs.

at work you say that oga is stealing all the money but yet you inflate prices and all that!

i think what he's trying to say is that we should all put more effort into trying to make nigeria better than it is!

@posakosa
you're right sha its someone like the OP working with someone like you(with someone like yours truly as neutral moderatorgrin) that will move nigeria forward.
There is no bitter truth anywhere. I believe the II-20 gives a ball park value as to expected expenses. People who get to the U.S and complain probably had no intention of going to school in the first place. How can a "literate" secondary school/university graduate expect to pay the exorhbitant fees via part time jobs. You would have to be a real DULLARD to think that. The estimated yearly expenses for my uni is $45,000. If i didn't get a scholarship, then yankee would be a no go for me.!!
some ppl are just out to leave naija at all costs now, we have quite a few on NL sef.

I understand what you mean and that's the more reason why the Lagos State govt should focus on removing the legal hurdles that prevent it (or any private sector operator) from generating and distributing power to industries in the state.

This focus on increasing taxes without measuring the economic impact on consumption and job creation is dangerous.

Even if we accept that the tax proceeds are being utilised as best as they can (which is doubtful given the ridiculous commission paid to Alpha Beta Consulting), it is important to determine that every N1 paid as tax is not better spent by taxpayers as opposed to the government
.
the bolded is true sha, and FYI the LASG has precious little to do with the legal hurdles that prevent the generation and distribution of power its more of a FG thing

A sensible government should focus not on eliminating "inequality", but on eliminating poverty. They are not the same thing. The former is a socialist/communist ideal whilst the latter strives to move more people into the middle class.

How do you do this? Jobs
How do you create jobs? Support businesses and encourage entrepreneurship
You can do it by decreasing taxes not increasing it.

Bridges, new roads etc can be (should be) built by private sector partners if you concession toll rights to them. You can even structure the deal such that in exchange for collecting tolls on the main arterial/highway roads, they must build and maintan a number of smaller non-tolled collector/local roads.

As many have noted, the government's strategy smacks of double-taxation, and implies that only the government can solve our problems. Remember the goal is to reduce proverty by creating jobs and only businesses can create jobs not the government.
but isnt it the govt's job to create an enabling atmosphere for the businesses?

without that atmosphere, we would end up replicating the crap in the GSM sector.

ok, my two cents to help keep this thread alive:

we lost a unit(a generator 150MW, funnily enough it was recommissioned earlier this month) on saturday morning and all the operators are sad about it, plus i just learnt that the 6000MW that govt is making noise about is a scam that means either the ppl in govt are extremely shady or extremely dull, i'll prolly come back and clarify this when i'm no longer upset (sob sob. . .i'm also sad about the loss of the unit), anyone that's observant will notice that its only politicians and oil pple that are talking about 6000MW; no power (electricity) person is talking about it(the minister of power doesnt count; he a politician) this is what happened in bola ige's time, you start making stupid statements and er'body keeps quiet and watches you make a fool out of yourself, sigh. . . i'm freezing in this office and at this point in time i really wish NEPA cld take light so i wouldnt hv to be the one that switches off the A/C but i know that isnt going to happen. . .lol

yep. . .but i figure(i'm not sure since i dont work there) that what'll happen when u get there is that u fill out a form and declare your income(which they'll tax you on. . .) i thnk the whole luxury car thing is just a ploy to scare them to the tax office. . .the lagos state govt hopefully isnt that stupid!

@Emperoh, this one is for you and your interpretation of the article.

So, If I were to have purchased said car for $1, I would pay taxes on $1 Or on my menial income as a typist in some government office?

They don’t pay taxes?  How you know this?

What of people who saved most of their lives to purchase the car? I mean it is not hard to imagine a typist using his 20 year savings to purchase a luxury car so he/she can feel good of self. Do you then tax that typist based on the car driven or how much he/she actually makes as a typist?
@kobojunkie

this is simply a crude method of getting the people to the tax office. Then they will have to declare their earnings there. Crude as it is what i'm able to gather from the initial post is that it is somewhat legal.

I don't really think we read this article well. . . .  .or maybe i too might be wrong
This articule says that a car u drive will be used to independently access how much u would be earning and thereof, charge you for you PIT.
Whereas u don't have a job, they have nothing to charge you of. . . .what i don't seem to realise is how they know who is employed and who is not.
How about Agberos and touts? Also this is mostly for the informal sector whereby there is no particular means of determining how much u make
Like traders, artisans, technicians who don't seem to pay tax but live well,(hence buying a car). . . .not a time to panick yet
Especially if u are on a paid employment and your coy remits the PIT of staff under its employ.

But sha, if you be artisan, u fit claim say u no get work nah!! grin grin
Unless ay u don already rush buy motor!!!!! tongue

If i am wrong, i stand to be corrected pls.
thank goodness o, it seems someone else here read and understood the post. . .

i'm a lagosian by the standards you listed i dont think i go about abusing people. . .
