A mass grave containing the remains of 800 German soldiers killed in World War II has been unearthed during building work in the south-western Russian city of Volgograd, the German War Graves Commission said on Friday.

The discovery in the once fiercely-contested city, previously known as Stalingrad, was made while water pipes were being laid, the commission said.

Full excavation will be problematic because part of the grave is located beneath a housing development, it added. The victory of Soviet troops at the Battle of Stalingrad is considered a major turning point in the war. In the winter of 1942/43, it is estimated that some 700,000 soldiers and civilians died on both sides.

Some historians believe more than one million people died during the battle, with many of them freezing to death in below-zero temperatures. Many are still officially missing.

The bones from the mass grave are believed to have belonged to soldiers, who died in the winter months of 1942/43, according to the association.

The men were buried hastily in a grave that also contained animals to contain the spread of disease.

The association has been working with Russian authorities in the area for some 25 years.

If remains are clearly identified with the help of identifying features and historical documents, family members are contacted.

The remains are then reburied in official military cemeteries such as Rossoshka, about 40 kilometres outside Volgograd. If identified, the newly discovered remains will also be brought there.

A group of South African virgins have explained that they are not in a hurry to have sex despite being pressured to do so.

The virgins from Ekurhuleni have been told to have sex or else the “salt” will fill up their heads. But they have one answer for their critics:

Sorry, we are not in a hurry and we don’t have salt!

Snegugu Radebe (22) from Daveyton said staying pure was a personal choice.

Snegugu said:

I choose to remain a virgin because I want God to bless me with a man who will value me. We are often told we don’t know what we are missing out on and that we are instead accumulating salt.

I advise girls not to rush into having sex. They must respect themselves. This will keep them safe from STIs.

On Sunday, the virgins joined Skhulile Msane from Welgedacht, Springs as she celebrated her 21st birthday.

Skhulile said she wanted to focus on her education and didn’t want to be distracted by boys.

Their godmother, Dumazile Maphanga, said the girls were checked every month to make sure they were still virgins.

She said:

If they break their virginity, they leave the group.

We teach them to be vigilant and not give into peer pressure.

Shops, goods and properties were destroyed when fire broke out at Fruit Garden in Port Harcourt, River state.


The fire, which affected a section of the popular Fruit Garden Market in D-Line, razed shops with all the goods in them, causing irreparable loss to traders and Rivers state.

The fire started at 8.30pm on Thursday, September 27, 2018, and spread before firefighters could respond.

Rivers State Governor has reportedly pledged to rebuild the market & pay compensation to traders as soon as possible.

India’s top court has ruled adultery is no longer a crime, striking down a 158-year-old colonial-era law which it said treated women as male property.

Previously any man who had sex with a married woman, without the permission of her husband, had committed a crime.

A petitioner had challenged the law saying it was arbitrary and discriminated against men and women.

This is the second colonial-era law struck down by India’s Supreme Court this month – it also overturned a 157-year-old law which effectively criminalised gay sex in India.

While reading out the judgement on adultery, Chief Justice Dipak Misra said that while it could be grounds for civil issues like divorce, “it cannot be a criminal offence”.

The law dictated that the woman could not be punished as an abettor. Instead, the man was considered to be a seducer.

A man accused of adultery could be sent to a prison for a maximum of five years, made to pay a fine, or both.

And although there is no information on actual convictions under the law, Kaleeswaram Raj, a lawyer for the petitioner, said the adultery law was “often misused” by husbands during matrimonial disputes such as divorce, or civil cases relating to wives receiving maintenance.

“Men would often file criminal complaints against suspected or imagined men who they would allege were having affairs with their wives.

These charges could never be proved, but ended up smearing the reputations of their estranged or divorced partners,” he told the BBC.
