Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of Edo State, Henry Ashofor, and an aide, and two others, have been reportedly kidnapped near Aiyetoro along the Igarra Ibillo road.

The incident was said to have happened at about 5:00p.m, on Saturday, shortly after the chairman and other top politicians from the area attended a burial ceremony in Igarra, the headquarters of the local government area.

“We were together at the party with several other political leaders and he left us and his followers to go back to Ibillo.

“We were shocked when we were told that he has been kidnapped. They were taken at gun point and led into the bush,” a party chieftain said.

At the time of sending the report, the police was yet to make an official statement but security personnel attached to the Chief of Staff to Governor Godwin Obaseki, Taiwo Akerele, who immediately mobilised to the area, arrested a suspect believed to be an informant and is currently with the police, in Igarra.

The APC ward III chairman in the area, Arnold Shadrach, was just released after he was reportedly kidnapped few days ago.

Recall that armed robbers last month raided banks in Igarra, resulting in the death of 10 persons.

Ivanka, 36, and her 37-year-old husband — both of whom are White House staffers — attended the service at the Washington National Cathedral alongside other members of the administration, including John Kelly, James Mattis, John Bolton and Elaine Chao.

Meanwhile, the 72-year-old commander-in-chief departed from the White House to travel to his golf course in Virginia during the funeral, according to Time.

McCain’s daughter Meghan seemingly took aim at the former reality star while giving an emotional speech at the funeral: “The America of John McCain has no need to be made great again, because America was always great.”

While it is not known why the former Celebrity Apprentice host did not go to McCain’s funeral, the Associated Press reported on Tuesday, August 27, that two White House officials claimed the family asked him not to attend the service before the Navy veteran’s death on August 25 at age 81.

Barack Obama, George W. Bush and Bill Clinton were also on hand to pay tribute to McCain at Saturday’s funeral.

The 44th and 43rd presidents both gave speeches noting their political rivalries with the six-term senator but applauded his approach to human rights.

“John understood, as JFK understood, as Ronald Reagan understood, that part of what makes our country great is that our membership is based not on our bloodline, not on what we look like, what our last names are,” Obama, 57, said.

“It’s not based on where our parents or grandparents came from or how recently they arrived, but on adherence to a common creed: That all of us are created equal, endowed by our creator to certain inalienable rights.”

Bush, 72, echoed that sentiment: “He respected the dignity inherent in every life. A dignity that does not stop at borders and cannot be erased by dictators.

Perhaps above all, John detested the abuse of power. He could not abide bigots and swaggering despots.”

President Muhammadu Buhari on Saturday arrived in Beijing, China for the 7th Summit of the Forum on China —Africa Cooperation.

China’s Exim bank will lend Nigeria $328 million towards improving the west African country’s telecoms infrastructure, Nigeria’s presidency said on Saturday, at the start of a six-day visit by President Muhammadu Buhari to the country.

Poor telecoms are a major challenge for businesses operating in Nigeria, which is Africa's largest oil producer, most populous country and has one of the continent's largest economies.

The agreement, the latest in a number of Chinese loan facilities to Nigeria since Buhari took office in 2015, comes as Beijing seeks to deepen its ties in Africa.

In China, robots are being developed to deliver groceries, provide companionship to the elderly, dispense legal advice and now they have joined the ranks of educators in kindergartens.

Just under 60 centimetres (two feet) high, the autonomous robot named Keeko has been a hit in several kindergartens, telling stories and challenging children with logic problems.

In one Chinese kindergarten, children giggled as they worked to solve puzzles assigned by their new teaching assistant: a roundish, short educator with a screen for a face.

White with a tubby body, the armless robot zips around on tiny wheels, its inbuilt cameras doubling up both as navigational sensors and a front-facing camera allowing users to record video journals.

At the Yiswind Institute of Multicultural Education on the outskirts of Beijing, the children have been tasked to help a prince find his way through a desert — by putting together square mats that represent a path taken by the robot — part storytelling and part problem-solving.

Each time they get an answer right, the device reacts with delight, its face flashing heart-shaped eyes.

“Education today is no longer a one-way street, where the teacher teaches and students just learn,” said Candy Xiong, a teacher trained in early childhood education who now works with Keeko Robot Xiamen Technology as a trainer.

“When children see Keeko with its round head and body, it looks adorable and children love it. So when they see Keeko, they almost instantly take to it,” she added.

Keeko robots have entered more than 600 kindergartens across the country with its makers hoping to expand into Greater China and Southeast Asia.

Beijing has invested money and manpower in developing artificial intelligence as part of its “Made in China 2025” plan, with a Chinese firm last year unveiling the country’s first human-like robot that can hold simple conversations and make facial expressions.

According to the International Federation of Robots, China has the world’s top industrial robot stock, with some 340,000 units in factories across the country engaged in manufacturing and the automotive industry.

The service robot market — which includes devices ranging from specialised medical equipment to automated vacuum cleaners –- is estimated to be worth $1.32 billion last year.

It is expected to grow to $4.9 billion by 2022, said market research firm Research In China.

Last week, Beijing hosted the World Robot Conference, featuring machines that can diagnose diseases, play badminton and wow audiences with their musical skills.

Last year, a group of monks in Beijing created a two-foot-high robot monk dispensing mantras and advice to attaining nirvana.

The iPal — a companion of sorts for children — is the latest humanoid robot to be marketed for family use, following in the footsteps of the diminutive, wisecracking “Pepper” companion released by Japan’s SoftBank in 2015.

The Keeko robots cost about 10,000 yuan ($1,500) — roughly equivalent to the monthly salary of a Chinese kindergarten teacher

But Xie Yi, principal of the kindergarten where Keeko has been put on trial, believes that it will be a long while before robots can completely replace humans in the classroom.

“To teach you must be able to interact, have a human touch, eye contact and facial expressions. These are the things that make an education,” Xie said.

“It’s not just the language or the content, it’s everything.”

She said the Keeko robots, which cost about 10,000 yuan ($1,500), or about the monthly salary of a kindergarten teacher, may have some advantages over a flesh-and-blood educator.

“The best thing about robots? They’re more stable (than humans),” she said with a laugh.

Nollywood actress Uduak Akrah is dead
According to report, Uduak Akrah, a graduate of creative art from the University of Lagos, died on Saturday, at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH).

Colleagues of the actress confirmed this on the social media, saying she died on Saturday, following injuries sustained from a fatal fall in the bathroom.

Popular filmmaker Charles Novia said;

“I just heard from someone close to her and her family in Abuja. She suffered complications in the past few months from a nasty fall in the bathroom,”

The actress who is based in Abuja was said to have been ill from the accident for some time, and was eventually brought to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

Described by colleagues as a versatile entertainer both on screen and on stage, Uduak Akrah, a graduate of Creative Art from the University of Lagos, was also an event planner and singer before her death.

Iyen Agbonifo speaking on her death said;

“Fantastic actress on stage and screen… An Akokite, calm and gentle, may her soul rest perfectly in peace,”

She is known for films like ‘Emotional Crack’ and ‘Bafana Bafana’.

Mrs Akeredolu made this known in Akure at the closing ceremony of the 2018 Summer Boot Camp 4 Girls Naija.

The Ondo State Governor’s wife, Mrs. Betty Akeredolu, has distributed 400 Microsoft laptop computers to some girls on two weeks ICT and solar technology training in the state.
Mrs Akeredolu made this known in Akure at the closing ceremony of the 2018 Summer Boot Camp 4 Girls Naija.

She said she had never been more hopeful of a better Nigeria than this moment, seeing 400 girls ready to “change our story and make us more visible on the world map.”

She said although the two weeks rigorous training in ICT, solar technology and life-enhancing skills was over, the girls had many years of impacting the world and making it a better place.

The governor’s wife said: “the baton has been placed in your hands; your race now begins.

“I must warn you that there will be challenging times, but you should know that this boot camp has equipped you with all that you need to overcome them all.

“Girls, to rise up to the task ahead, you must put all you have learned here to practice; mentor many more girl children and build a formidable network of change agent.”

Mrs Akeredolu commended those who contributed in one way or the other to the success of the 2018 Summer Boot Camp 4 Girls Naija.

She described the contributors as great giants upon whose shoulders the girls would stand to see further and create lasting development in Nigeria and the world at large.

“You have given a head start to the girl child and indeed the marginalised of the society and pitched their tents in the court of great visionaries,” she noted.

She called on Nigerian to endeavor to help children in various communities without waiting for government support.

The Representative of Microsoft Nigeria, Mr Olusola Amosan, commended the First Lady for the initiative, saying it would enable the girls to prepare themselves for a better tomorrow.

Amosan said the two weeks training had exposed the girls to many applications in computer, which they could use to better their lots in a legitimate manner.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the training was the second edition since Mrs Akeredolu assumed office of the first lady of Ondo state.

The ex-Banker spoke to Saturday Beats and he explained that rumours that he unfollowed Alex, whom he was very friendly with in the house and whom many thought he was dating, on social media

But, he Tobi claimed that he was the one that got blocked and that he doesn’t generally unfollow people

President Muhammadu Buhari says the performance of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the recently held bye-elections is proof that the party will win the 2019 elections.

The President who made the assertion on Friday in Daura, Katsina State, believes the ruling party will build on the victories it recorded in Ekiti, Bauchi, Katsina and Kogi states.

“Coming against the backdrop of the victory in Ekiti governorship election, the string of victories by our party, the APC, is a clear indication of the way things will go in 2019,” he was quoted as saying in a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mr Garba Shehu.

“For those who are discerning; those who have ears and eyes they will see, hear and understand. Those who don’t understand are entitled to their mistaken assumptions.”

President Buhari, who received the representatives of the 34 Chairmen of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in Katsina State, emphasised that APC’s victories in the recent polls are indeed “the sign of things to come.”

He thanked the leaders of the association for visiting him in the spirit of the season and for their message of congratulations on the performance of the party and his administration.

The President assured the group and Nigerians in general that he would continue to do his best for the nation.

Speaking on behalf of the members, the Chairman of ALGON in the state, Mr Mohammed Na’Allah, pledged their support and commitment to the success of the Buhari administration.

Meanwhile, President Buhari held a separate meeting with the leaders of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Katsina State.

He assured the group that he was determined to continue respecting the diversity of the country, adding that he would run a government that is fair and just to all Nigerians.

The President thanked the CAN leadership in the state for living in peace and harmony with other religious groups, and for supporting his administration in its policies and programmes

On behalf of the group, the state CAN Chairman, Reverend Nelson Onyeakachukwu, and the coordinator of Christian Pilgrimage in Katsina, Haruna Danjuma, commended the President for his performance.

They described President Buhari as a good ambassador of the state who has made the people proud.

“Christians in Katsina are happy with both Governor Masari in the state and yourself at the centre. We will continue to support both of you,” the religious leaders said.

Ghanaian singer Samini is making headlines and this has nothing to do with a brand new tune.

The Dancehall star, according to Nkonkosa has requested that the Ghanaian government grant him licence to grow his own marijuana in the country.

Samini was speaking on Okay FM’s Wednesday Lbeive.

Samini who has become very vocal about his protest against the criminalizing of marijuana in the country also asked that the government installs proper mechanisms for marijuana to be commercialized.

The singer insisted that as a farmer, growing the plant will help grow the economy.

“I am a farmer. I need licence to grow weed and export it to the industries that use wee for medicinal purposes and every other thing important apart from smoking.

If I get the licence to grow weed, I’ll supply to the medical industry, the oil industry… the paper industry, you know different [different] industries which use marijuana as raw materials as base for what they produce,” he said.
