Sam0:Most people have allowed political/ethnic sentiments to block their ability to reason. They filled a thread this morning insulting Buhari for restricting the release of forex from the nation's reserves, international airlines want to repatriate over half a billion dollars out of Nigeria, the CBN refuses for clearly obvious reasons but ordinary Nigerians chose to take sides with the foreign company because they think opposition should be all about going against any and everything Buhari stands for. Businesses are closing! businesses are closing! so they insult Buhari for withholding forex. Obviously they want the FG to open the gates of CBN to freely release forex to everyone who requests for it in order to 'stimulate' businesses. And then in 3 months, when the nation runs out of its forex reserves, the Venezuelan situation arises, and ours would be worse because of our population and even the rich and comfortable would start begging for food. And then they would weep again and blame Buhari. |
ephi123:Yeah... his travels are indefensible and his silence on pressing national issues are very irresponsible. |
Guyman02:Such rare wisdom.. |
OLADD:Sorry you are the one who has sold his mind to God knows what. What do you mean by APC sabotaged GEJ's government on the very week GEJ was to handover?... What sort of discerning mind would think that APC was sabotaging power infrastructure after they had already won elections and a week before GEJ was to hand over to Buhari?.... Is this all your wisdom could cough out in form of a defence?... Your type of discernment is truly rare. GEJ laid the foundation for 5000mw, the real questions should be, how much infrastructure did GEJ actually add to what he met for us to get to 5000mw?.... Secondly, you do not need any special kind of wisdom to know that for the power to fluctuate erratically from 4000-2000-1327-5000-3000-0-3000mw etc, then there must be something wrong with the power infrastructure which is still yet to be fixed. Then you jump and claim that a BUhari who inherited this mess 10months ago is fully responsible, yet you accuse someone else of blame game?.... Just listen to yourself and tell me the things you are spewing makes any iota of sense to you? Talking about the empty treasury, are you a kid that you do not know the meaning of 'a virtually empty treasury'?.... A nation with 170million people with a very high taste for foreign goods and we had less than $30billion as forex reserves. Do you need more than just common sense to know that that amount was next to nothing when compared to the forex demands of Nigerians?.... The amount left in the CBN reserves could barely meet a 3-months import quota and you think Buhari was lying when he said he met a virtually empty treasury?... I really just can't fathom the IQ level of some of the people on this site, or are you just feigning ignorance in order to have what to say? http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/05/external-reserves-cant-pay-for-more-than-3-months-of-imports/ |
Angola has just sold its soul to the devil. After giving you these funds, the IMF would force you through its terms to devalue your currency, thereby instantly doubling what you would have to repay to them. Instant slavery! The above is what most Nigerians are unknowingly clamouring for by shouting that Buhari has no policy direction. Foreign investors are running away because Buhari has no 'policy direction,' when in the real sense, the 'policy direction' which the exploiters are citing as their basis to run away is nothing but devaluation of the Naira. The only policy direction they want is an outright devaluation so they can rush in and rake in mega profits irrespective of the detriments to Nigerians in form of inflation. The bait is simple, 'if you devalue and allow us access to your forex reserves at will, we will invest in your country and bring in more forex to help your country.' But it is all scam, this same excuse has been used since the 80's when N1=$2, but the benefits of devaluations never worked in Nigeria. But today, Nigerians are about to play into the hands of these hawks again by accusing the CBN of not devaluing. |
eLcastro:NOI's ideas were overridden by the dubious plans of the hawks that GEJ surrounded himself with. |
2sexycom:Put on your thinking cap man, all the things you just mentioned are effects of a lack of forex which is a consequence of the drastic drop in oil prices. You can't be comparing a regime which sold oil for over $110 to one selling oil at $30-$40, it is a pointless comparison. If you must compare then and now, the closest reasonable comparison is the last 6 months of the last regime when the Naira fell by 35% from around N160 to N220/$, CBN forex reserves fell drastically by $10bn in 6 months, FG ran out of cash and had to borrow in early 2015 to offset FG workers salaries, there was a massive shortage of forex and fuel importers couldn't be paid their entitlements for almost a year leading to the worst fuel scarcity in Nigerian history - Yes that fuel crisis of May 2015 was the worst cos even banks had to close for business due to a total lack of fuel and fuel even sold for as much as N400 then. We easily forget things in Nigeria. It was purely an effect of oil price drop and remember even as at May 29th 2015, oil still sold for over $60 (remember it later fell to about $27 in Jan 2016). What I'm trying to say is simple, Buhari isn't responsible for the lack of forex and the the attendant consequences. It is his duty however to steer the nation out of this mess, he is not a magician who can conjure forex overnight, any steps taken to remedy this situation as regards diversifying the economy will take years to mature. |
2sexycom:I answered his question in the next comment. Here's my response below: obailala: |
TippyTop:The last time I checked, we transited from darkness to darkness. After spending over $26billion (OBJ $16bn and GEJ $10bn+), we were still in darkness. So telling me to enjoy my darkness makes no sense. The road you suggest we take also led us through darkness for decades so please tell me something else. |
ephi123:It's mostly all an effect of the forex scarcity. Fuel Scarcity: Marketers complained of lack of forex so they stopped importing. NNPC was forced to take over 100% fuel importation, but they don't have the logistics capacity for that, hence the fuel shortages you experience today. No power: This is a problem lingering since the 80's, in the last 17 years, over $26 billion (OBJ $16bn and GEJ $10bn+) has been spent on power yet we still have darkness. Buhari only got his first budget approved last week. Inflation: We import almost everything we use in Nigeria from food to clothes to toothpicks. Lack of forex drives up the price of forex and this consequently drives up the price of everything (INFLATION). Even pure water prices have gone up cos the producers import the polythene bags. To whole accusations about Buhari 'lacking an economic policy' is all about devaluing the Naira, a lot of foreign investors and nations want the Naira devalued so they can multiply their profits they exploit out of Nigeria. These guys are ready to frustrate and twist the arms of Nigeria until it devalues. These guys are not your friends, they only care about their profits while ordinary Nigerians grapple in the inflation that comes with devaluation. Nigeria has devalued countless times since the 80's when N1 = $2, but none of the benefits of devaluing has ever worked in Nigeria and it has only led to more inflation. Merits or demerits of devaluation at a time like this is debatable though, but do not always think these people shouting 'economic policy' are your friends. |
TippyTop:There was a roadmap to power sector reforms which was originated by Yaradua and completed by GEJ. Every scholar knows there's nothing wrong with the template and no one maligned the template. The only issue was the inability, lack of political will and incompetence of the originators of this template to even implement the map they drew. Steps are being taken to implement the roadmap, part of which is the review of power tariffs, a task which GEJ and his people couldn't implement. Now it's all a mess because the privatisation aspect of the roadmap was messed up because as usual, GEJ and his PDP vultures sold our power infrastructure to their cronies, most of which have no business being in the power sector business in the first place. Now that is a major problem Fashola has to contend with. Now to expose another of your delusions, you say OBJ takes all the blame for spending $16billion, yet your GEJ takes absolutely no blame for spending an additional $10billion yet still giving Nigerians darkness. By the way, that OBJ did not support GEJ in 2015 elections does not make him an APC member, sink that into your memory. |
OLADD:GEJ spent over $10billion to increase power generation which was at over 4000mw to 5000mw. Then when he was handing over in May 29th, total generation crashed to 1327mw. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/183496-nigerias-power-generation-at-all-time-low-crashes-to-1327mw.html And then Buhari takes over and power jumps up to 5000mw in months (you praise GEJ) and then after some months again it falls to zero (you blame Buhari). You have the shameless guts to hail GEJ as a hero for building 5000mw but turn around to blame Buhari when you know pretty well that the rotten power infrastructure he inherited fluctuates like crazy?... You must be very proud of this your strange wisdom. Obama did not exchange blames with his predecessors because obviously, empty headed supporters of his predecessors did not jump online on a daily basis wailing about how an Obama who just took over months ago was responsible for the failed economy. |
TippyTop:Oh yes, I am enjoying my change very much, the most important part of the change I enjoy is knowing that GEJ is history and seeing his confused supporters wail endlessly. Just imagine a man who spent trillions of massive wealth but the nation has absolutely nothing to show for it in terms of power, health, jobs etc, yet his confused bigoted supporters expect me to regret voting him out. As for any hardships being faced today, I am not an empty skull so I am fully aware it is all caused by the drop in oil prices and any remedy to it as regards diversification of the economy would take a substantial time (I am patient). When I supported Buhari, I knew I wasn't supporting a miracle worker hence I am not expecting a miracle overnight. I voted for change not magic and I don't expect 16 years misrule and ruin to be fixed in a year. |
TippyTop:Oh... Are you by any means trying to justify the bizarreness of GEJ supporters blaming Buhari/Fashola for power failure?.... So while Buhari wasted time appointing ministers, the $10billion worth power infrastructure built by GEJ and the $16billion infrastructure built by OBJ collapsed in 10 months so therefore we shall all blame a Buhari whose budget hasn't even been signed? |
helphelp: TippyTop:APC only blames GEJ when GEJ supporters blame a 10-months old Buhari regime for Nigeria's woes. For instance, how does one explain the bizarreness of GEJ supporters blaming Buhari/Fashola (who just had first budget passed 2 weeks ago) for our poor power infrastructure even when their hero GEJ spent over $10billion on power but handed over darkness? ... I would appreciate a reasonable explanation for this bizarre case. If jonathanian can just shut up or criticise sensibly and stop making uncanny wailing references to how GEJ was a messiah who would have saved Nigeria, I can assure you the APC would forget if GEJ ever existed. |
Standing5:No existing monitoring system in the world today can prevent third party damage to Nigerian pipelines. As long as there is a deliberate attempt by several humans to damage the pipelines, no amount of technology can prevent it except you line soldiers who will shoot at sight along the length of all vital pipelines (which isn't possible). |
luvinhubby:Lol... Bubu hasn't been able to fix power in 11months, we are all about to crucify him. MUMU is when the loudest critics who are shouting CRUCIFY HIM, CRUCIFY HIM!!! are advocating for the return of the GEJ who enjoyed unprecedented oil wealth, spent over $10billion on power, yet handed over darkness to Nigerians. |
100Cents:Subsidy has never been removed. As long as government still fixes oil prices, subsidy is still in place. The landing cost of petrol fell below the govt fixed price (N86.5) so there was no need to pay subsidy and the govt collected the excess cash. Today the landing cost has risen above the fixed price so the government is paying the excess (subsidy). |
ephi123:Kindly give us a hint of a clear economic policy which can miraculously manufacture forex instantly and get us out of this mess in a short while? The country is suffering from a negative balance of trade due to the drop in oil prices. There is presently a massive shortage of forex and the FG/CBN is restricting forex release so the entire country wouldn't go hungry within months. What is so hard in this explanation that some of us can't understand?... You want the FG/CBN to release forex to everyone who asks for it, international airlines alone are requesting $575million, what do you think would happen to our forex reserves if the CBn releases all these funds?... Whose side are you on?... Are you taking sides with the foreign companies against your own survival all because you want an opportunity to criticise Buhari? ![]() |
kingthreat:Sometimes I wonder whether you guys are actually Nigerians or whether you are the foreign investors. While you keep blaming the govt for withholding forex, are you by any means aware that there is a negative balance of trade and a shortage of forex in the country?.... If the FG lifts the forex restrictions and opens the vaults, the present forex reserves of the CBN will be spent in just a few months, is that what you want?... or is it that you do not understand what the situation is?.... Whose side are you on exactly?... The CBn/FG isn't restricting the free release of forex because it wants to 'eat' the money, it is doing so out of necessity to save you from impending hunger. I know you will not still get the point because to you, it's most likely just a game of PAC vs PDP. |
chiefobdk:swerve! |
The most important point she raised here is that during the 2008 oil price crash, the fact that she/OBJ/Yaradua had savings of up to $22bn in ECA, Nigeria didnt feel the heat of the oil price crash in 2008. But under GEJ, governors forced the hands of GEJ until he shared the ECA funds. The question I have however is, the FG's share in the ECA fund was over 50%, so did the governors also force GEJ/NOI to spend the over $11bn which was the FG's share? |
chiefobdk:Nigeria is not a mono-product economy?.... and then you move on to say 'moribund' companies should be revived?.... if something is moribund, how does it contribute to the economy? And you think your above statement makes any sense to the point of declaring my statement as trash?..... and then you proceed to say it is APC that killed the moribund industries across Nigeria (textile, g-nut, palmoil, steel, rubber etc)? With your manner of reasoning, I would be damned if I dignify you with an argument. Good morning. |
tuniski:Lol.. 225/230 indeed. Even with GEJ devaluing, it dropped to 220 as at May last year. And you think further devaluation would have left it at 225 even with the massive negative balance of trade?.... where wouod the forex have come from?... or probably the foreign companies that left would have flooded the market with forex?... What kind of dream is that?.... I may not be an economist but my gut feeling tells me if the naira value is allowed to float freely on demand and supply, the value wouldnt be less than 260-280. |
jeytee:Of course if things don't change pretty soon, buhari and APC are gone. But that is subject to PDP fielding a reasonable candidate in 2019. |
tuniski:your point is noted, Buhari should devalue the Naira officially, his stubbornness to do this is his economic crime. I am not an economic expert and I am not a prophet, but very soon, PMB will succumb to this pressure and devalue the Naira, and then we will all know if devaluation is truly the way forward for Nigeria or not; we will know if devaluation will reduce or increase the present inflation. |
jeytee:Lol.. I would watchout for your albums. Hopefully you guys wouldn't release only melancholic tunes. On a lighter note, elections have been won and lost over a year ago, let's stop bringing up these 'GEJ was better' and 'if it was GEJ' issues cos GEJ is now past tense. Allow me to look forward, focus on the new government and criticise them constructively like every well meaning Nigerian should be doing. The continuous reference to GEJ GEJ keeps dragging us back to pre-election forgotten era. |
jeytee:Shift abeg... Don't have the time to dignify a bleedy wailer who is ignorant of the topic of discussion with an argument. Go wail elsewhere boy! |
jeytee: You are clearly an empty skull to be talking about states owing salaries when we are discussing FG. I shouldn't be dignifying you with a response, hence I asked you to shift. |
jeytee:Shift abeg! |
jpphilips:I absolutely agree with you. It not just the PDP wailers that don't understand these things, I also do not have a clue what Kachikwu keeps blabbing about. I believe there's a way these things can be communicated effectively to douse public tension. This government is obviously very incompetent when it comes to information dissemination, most information sharing seems to be done by just supporters online who have no direct link with government. Sometimes I even wonder whether we still have an information ministry. |
