If you think the first thing to do is to focus on tax when the country is on fire…have fun bro! This is not about sounding smart because it's just plain common sense. Arguing to the contrary is just crass ignorance honestly. The country is on fire because the country is broke and you need money to fix it. The country does not have money to fix the country because the tax system is faulty. That is why it needs to be accorded the utmost importance. Also please try and understand what tax reforms are all about because you seem to think these reforms are about increasing taxation on the citizenry which may not necessarily be so. There is urgent need for a total overhaul of our tax system if we want to get it right going forward as a country and that would involve addressing all the leakages in the system, as well as reviewing all the charges currently imposed (eg tariffs for imported items which In some cases are ridiculously high fuelling inflation and encouraging smuggling) with view to identifying if they are effective or not as well as the problem of multiple taxation for businesses which is impeding economic growth in the country. That is why in my first post I said I'm in support PROVIDED IT IS PROPERLY DONE. |

Under that situation you can now talk about tax and people will GLADLY pay because they know you know what”s up. Google the natural resources found in Switzerland, compare that with the natural resources found only in NORTHERN NIGERIA. Check their GDP and compare it with Nigeria’s GDP. No be only secondary school students, a baby still in the womb knows that diversifying the economy has nothing to do with your long essay. Your first paragraph gave you away! 10Q. So what's your point exactly? Because you're not making any sense if you don't see the need for the tax reforms and why this should be given the priority that this government has rightly accorded it! You're just blowing hot air. How can you be talking of blue economy when the fundamentals of your economy are in dire need of repair? Don't just come online to form intelligence and instead expose your ignorance. Diversifying the economy without fixing the tax system is akin to going to the stream to fetch water with a bucket full of holes. There is a place for economic diversification of course in the economic reforms the government plans as this will widen the tax base but first things first the tax system has to be functional and efficient. This is simple common sense. |

toprealman: You reduce dependence on oil by diversifying the economy…stop sound smarter than you know you have always been! Uncle even secondary school students know that we generate either oil or non oil revenue and we are massively exposed to oil price fluctuations due to our overdependence on oil exports. Over time, the massive inefficiencies in tax collection hasn't been addressed hence the reason for this committee. Of course, efforts are underway to diversify the economy especially in government funding agricultural and industrial expansion but all these efforts will remain in vain if your tax system is porous and still has numerous loopholes which can be exploited. I'm sure you know that the success story of Lagos compared to most other states is because of their effective tax system where even pure water sellers on the road pay some for of tax daily in the name of ticket. Whether 80% of the Lagos tax is used for the Lagos people or shared by the big boys is a topic for discussion another day. |

I think this is a good initiative to reduce our dependence on oil if properly followed through.
Much of the corruption in the economy is found in the diversion of government revenue.

I am just wondering if it is possible for Joe Ajaero, who openly aligned with Peter Obi, to be politically neutral and act in the national interest. This protest and nationwide strike he has called for looks like a political stunt, especially considering that the current government has agreed to increase the minimum wage and that all major presidential candidates, except Kwankwaso, agreed that they would remove fuel subsidies. Including Peter Obi, who said they would go IMMEDIATELY.
This strike is unnecessary and very ill-timed, more so when Nigeria is facing a crisis in Niger Republic that could spill over into Nigeria and destabilise our economy and political institutions.
I may not support President Tinubu, but the palliatives and measures he announced two days ago were far-reaching and should have caused Labour and Ajaero to pause. But it didn't. What is their agenda? This is about Nigeria, and it is time for us to be patriotic and do what is in the country's best interest, no matter who is President. I am not sure that Ajaero would take this action if his friend, Peter Obi, were President.
What exactly does Joe Ajaero want? Even his own home state of Imo has introduced palliatives.
Should Nigeria continue to spend more on fuel subsidies than she spends on education, health, and housing? How is that economically viable?
And can Mr Ajaero explain why the pump fuel price in neighbouring Benin Republic went up as soon as Nigeria ended fuel subsidies?
Nobody should take us backwards to a Buhari era where we were borrowing to pay for fuel subsidies and tripled our foreign debt with nothing to show for it. Fuel subsidies must go, whether this present NLC likes it or not. Very very stupid partisan write up. Recycling all the rubbish propaganda used in the elections. You have the shameless audacity to call the protest ill timed with the current price of fuel at almost 600 and inflation at a record 22%. Food prices are off the charts and people have resorted to trekking due to exorbitant transport prices. Someone at his swearing-in removed subsidy immediately and since then we have not even since even one of the audio palliatives released to the public to ameliorate the suffering and you say the protest is ill timed? Shame on you. You don't wish the country well at all. |

It would have been better if the CBN fought inflation. Tinubu and the CBN do not want the economy to enter a recession and have therefore been dovish about inflation.
Low inflation would be the best present to the suffering masses. Next should be to bring commercial lending rates from banks down to single digits. Rates of 9% and less should be the standard. This will help certain perk up the economy How do you get banks to lend at below inflation rate? The current inflation is not demand pull but cost push based. Kayyy: Bro, not knocking your ideas, you still didn't get my point, firstly mention any successive govt that has actually blocked any loophole or conduit for corruption completely in this country since inception, you know why ? It's not about you , it's about the workers, even the lowest of the officers have their form of corruption not to talk of the managerial positions. I know how much my friends at Tin Can Apapa were taking home daily about 10years ago and how they spend on me when I go greeting them and none were at managerial level. So it's not about the person at the top , the policies he would put in place would still be managed in the ground, would you as president know how the bush routes would be created to move products ?. Besides there would always be review in the quantity of refined imported products cos people would buy cars and other equipments that use petrol as the years goes on, so wouldn't you be reviewing to capture them ? .
Lastly and most importantly, have you quantified the amount you want to spend on all these programs in a short term and loan it would involved and refinancing and servicing of those loans vis a vis the current debt profile ? You want spend trillions on subsidy and refineries, spending hundreds of billions to manage naira/dollar exchange , increase minimum wage , spend on education etc all these within just 6 months , where will these money come from ? And how do we pay it back hot minding we're still paying the one owed by your predecessor Buhari?, Mind you , you will still be presenting your own appropriation bill for the year 2024 in 6 months with all these your spending ? Bros, let's not get it twisted. At the moment Nigeria is not yet dead. The fact that previous governments didn't get it right does not preclude the current administration from changing history. Let me ask you a simple question..... With all the myriad of problems you have listed at the refineries, do you doubt that the same refinery would become functional if it was sold to a private individual eg Otedola? Corruption thrives when an atmosphere is provided for it. We all were here when people were voluntarily refunding looted funds to government when Buhari initially assumed office because of fear of his body language. It just takes making an example of a few people in the system for the others to sit up. Look at what is happening in Niger Republic now that the Military has taken over and people are being threatened with execution if they cannot account for public funds. I'm not saying our own will be that extreme but just imagine..... Would any worker in his right mind risk looting seeing his boss being dealt with severely? If we clamp down on all these leakages you would be surprised at the amount of revenue we will generate in addition to the funds freed up from inflated subsidy figures. Combine that with some loans to fund the shortfall and relate the economy and watch Nigeria bounce back You also forget that we also have just collected 500bn from world Bank. First of all that 75b earmarked for senate will be cancelled ASAP. That can go into planting cassava on 150000 hectares of land. Also if we do a comprehensive audit of Nnpc, customs, Firs and CBN you will be shocked at the amount of looted funds we will recover that we will use to finance all these programmes. Now imagine if we give DSS and EFCC 50billion each to go after all those who have looted public funds or and reward them with a 5% finders fee, do you doubt the wonders those guys will do to help us fight this war on corruption and help us get firmly back on road to recovery? Tinubu listed some nice programs but until he decides to look corruption in the face and fight it head on all these so called funds will just go down the drain. First things first. Probe Nnpc, CBN and customs. Set the tone that it won't be business as usual. Otherwise all these policies by the government won't get the desired results. |

Kayyy: So after the previous government budgeted around 3.5 trillion in subsidy just for Jan-June and were shooting our debts up to 77trillion naira,You will in your first month budget another round of trillions on subsidy, while servicing more debts, where will you get the money you claim you want to spend on your other programmes when you have used your initiative to reduce your earnings by using it to service further debts ? Also I guess you will still use your earnings and further loans to continue to defend the naira/dollar exchange rate ? And before You know it in 3-4 months if you in office our debts have moved from 77 trillion to over 85 trillion without any functional project on ground. And these are the people insulting Buhari , Jonathan, Tinubu etc ? When online you go find out say majority of these critics will crumble this country faster than the people they love to insult. Look let's get it right the problem is not the subsidy the problem is the process of the subsidy payments there is a lot of inefficiency in the subsidy payment process which is what has given rise to all the corruption and leakage in the system so my own first focus will be blocking all those loopholes. We all know that the reported daily fuel consumption figure was inflated. We also know that there was significant smuggling because there was no tracking from the depots to the filling stations. These are simple things that could have been done to reduce the amount we pay for subsidy whilst tackling the corruption in the subsidy process. So I'm quite sure that we won't use another 3.5 trillion to subsidize fuel. Also there will be a state of emergency declared on our refineries and everything will be done to ensure they come on line before December. Until we can secure self sufficiency in domestic production I will not remove subsidy because fuel subsidy was a direct consequence of fuel importation. |

Curse777: Let me measure your Administrative ability as a human
Let's say you become The President today
1: No Subsidy in 2022/2023 budget
There are some of the many options I would take: a. Secure a supplementary budget to retain subsidy until year end 2023 even if it means getting a loan. b. Deep dive into the inefficiencies of the current fuel subsidy system to block all leakages as a point of national emergency. Pardon my french but you get the idea. c. Immediately institute an external audit of NNPC and ruthlessly address all issues thrown up from the audit. Do the same for NPA and customs and eliminate the ridiculous tariffs that have crippled our revenue generation by giving rise to importers seeking alternatives like shipping through Benin or worse still smuggling. d.ensure at least 1 refinery comes up before the end of the year and at least 3 comes up before the end of 2024. e. Implement at least 5 CNG conversion centers
2: inflation is going up.
a. provide tax incentives and loans for massive food importation to ensure massive Increased food supply at lower prices. This will help stabilise food prices. b. Implement a task force to focus on the food supply chain bottlenecks such as infrastructure deficit in the rural areas, storage deficits, multiple taxation of food transporters which all contribute to inflated food prices. Combine that with agric loans to farmers and inputs like access to tractors and fertilizers for farm cooperatives and ensure judicious use of these supplies to avoid corruption and failure of these policies. c. Massive food cultivation and incentives to go into all kinds of farming across the country. d. Significant support for small and medium sized businesses and entrepreneurs by providing soft loans on merit to deserving candidates nationwide to help their businesses grow and stimulate the economy. e. Conduct a massive overhaul of governance spending and implement austerity measures to cut government spending by at least 40% with those savings directly invested in funding CNG conversion subsidies across the 36 states.
There are so many things that can and should be done. I've not spoken on education, health or security. Let's just start with these for the economy
3: your next budget is after fully setting up all commitee of National Assembly
What will you do?!
