Just to add, no Southern state can encompass all of Igboland. I posted a map above for reference. |
It's possible, Osisikanku used charms inorder to disappear whenever he touched a leaf and was immune to bullets. However he was killed by the police when his charms failed him and he was shot. |
@ Alj Harem Those census figures are inacurate. The Ngwa clan alone (which is concentrated in Abia State) is more than 3 million in population. Their population in 1979 was 1.5 million, feel free to double that or triple if you like. Besides those censuses are 2006 estimates. Feel free to add to compensate for the numbers that were deducted. Imo state in 2006 was more or less 6 million. Its pop today can be 7 million or 8. The same goes for the other SE states. Also according to this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Igboland the 2006 population estimate of Igboland was in excess of 30 million. Igboland alone has more than 30 million (lets say 32 million), now add up the masybe 10 or 12 million Igbos meaning 42 million + Igbo people in Nigeria. Remember Igboland is not only the SE but (Delta, Rivers, small parts of Bayelsa and Benue and small parts of Akwa Ibom). Here is a map to help you comrpehend

^^^ Why the eww? And i feel indifferent why do you ask? |
Im going to miss watching Ahmed Musa's dazzling runs Nigeria, the best and most talented team of the tournament, leaves. And also, Ahmed Musa, the best player of the tournament leaves. I wont be watching this WC any more. Its only going to be the old usual European drama. But I blame the referee, he failed to give Nigeria 2 penalties and a corner, but I digress. |
tpia@:I wonder. |
You know OP, I understand how you feel. I myslef, left Igboland at the age of 5. At that Age, I spoke and heard Igbo fluently. However, as we travelled out, I was lucky enough that my parents continued to speak Igbo to me and at home we converse in Igbo, infact the only time English is spoken is at school. With thiis help, I was able to maintain my Igbo, expand it and learn a little about other languages including Ibibio. What my point is is that you must stay somewhere where you will always encounter Igbo. The best place is your village, or a city in the SE. Anothe option is to find a friend in Nigeria who is willing to help you. You can send him/her credit and you guys can talk on the phone (in Igbo) daily so as to improve your vocabulary. Do this for a year or two and you will surely learn. Trust me, most books, memorizatioon techniques and etc dont work because they dont tell you how to think in Igbo. Like i said earlier, your best chance of learning Igbo lies in Nigeria and not with your parents, since by what you said they arent giving you enough help and encouragement. Go and live with your non-englishpeaking grandmother for some time and it will force you to learn Igbo. Best wishes. |
Their was an ethnic census on Nairaland in which Igbos were found to be NLs largest group with over 42 percent. The question of Yoruba surpassing Igbo is not worth surpassing since Igbos are in excess of 30 million in Igboland and up to 15 million more (7 million in Lagos + elsewhere) while Yorubas are not up to 1 million outside of Yorubaland. |
We are still alive free kick for nigeria |
I went mad for 30 secs after Ejikes goal! |
Go and live a year in Igboland and you will surely master Igbo. |
@ Alj You have a point but you don't understand. Igboland is the smallest of the big three lands but it has the highest population density in Nigeria. Hausaland is not used for farming. The arras around Sokoto, Katsina are near barren or shrubland. The people partake in nomadic herding And few farm. Whereas Igboland is fertile and arable and can hold a large population for it's size. As for land area that doesn't matter. Russia is the biggest nation on earth but it only has 141 million people compared to Pakistan which is less than 1/10th it's size but has 160 million people. In 2006, Igboland was estimated to have a population in excess of 30 million, excluding Igbos outside of Igboland. The average density is 1000 people per square mile. Igboland is only second in density in Africa to the Nile valley. A place a little larger than Igboland but with 80 million people. I personally view the figure Igbo first and then Hausa and Yoruba. Igbos are everywhere and sometimes their population in cities often challenges the indigenous population (Lagos). There are so many Igbos that in every major city in Nigeria, someone must have heard or seen an Igbo person. As for those groups who you say do not accept being Igbo, that's a mindset that only exists online. Ive met many Ikwerre people who are proud Igbos and see themselves as an Ikwerre subgroup just like there is a Ngwa subgroup. Same goes with the Anioma (good land) subgroup. |
@ Negro We could use less people like you on earth. I won't bother debating the population of the Igbo to you, you and I know that what you are saying is baseless. You have an unusual and dangerous attitude towards others which I advise you should be corrected. I'm still thinking on whether what you wrote is worth replying to. ![]() |
Yorubas aren't the most populous. It's very hard for you to find Yorubas outside of the SW and Kwara. It's definitely Igbo, let there be a census |
^^^ Thats where you are wrong, my brother. Igbos are found indeginously in 8 states : Abia State, Rivers State (70-80% of Rivers is Igbo), Delta Sate (Here they make a bit over half of the population) , Anambra State, Benue State, Imo state, Ebonyi State and Enugu State. The SE geopolitical zone is only 3/5 of Igboland. Also Hausaland is not as desnley populated as the East (Which is the most densely populated place in Nigeria). Also much of Hausaland is sparesly populated (Excluding Kano, Kaduna and Sokoto) since a large number of the inhabitants partake in herding. However, I agree with Islam allowing more than one wife. But remmeber space isn't everything. The Fulanis can be found anywhere from Guinea to Sudan however their world-wide numbers dont exceed 10 million. |
Then who do you spectulate the most populous ethnicity in Nigeria are and why? And also, if I understand you clearly, Igbos are the third largest. Why is this also? |
I apologize if i may sound bigotic but everything agrees with my statement: How many of our footballers are Igbo? How many of our actors are Igbo? Howmany of our businessmen/busineswomen are Igbo? The numbers are purely evident. |
But which ethnicity among the three is found everywhere in substantial numbers? Hausas are not as large as they may seem. Remember in Nigeria, Hausas and Fulanis are counted as One group. Subtract Fulani and thats 2-3%. Now also subtract the number of Non-Hausas counted as Hausas because they speak Hausa, and also subtract the number added by the census beureas. |
Quote How many people are in Nigeria? 150M? 155M? 170M? Well whatever the number its certain that in every city wther it be Lagos, Benin City, Kano, Kaduna, Abuja, Calabar, Jos and etc. there is a substantial population of the Igbos. A people found wherever there is money to be made, and advancement to be attained, the Igbo's are most likey Nigeria's largest ethnicity probably numbering 40 million in Nigeri and millions more world-wide. Doubtful? Forget Census Reports, Nigeria has been known for providing inadequate and unreliable. In the census of 1991? Igbos were pronounced eighteen percent of Nigeria--a percentage which holds much controversy. With the 100 million people of Nigeria at that time, it meant that Igbos were only 18 million. How's this possible. Most fingures are pointed at the North which is supected of downplaying the numbers of the Igbos in an attempt to increase theirs and create the illusion that "most Nigerians are Northerners" which has been downplayed with common sense. It is possible to estimate that Igbos are anywhere from 35-40 million 23-26% of Nigeria. So let us as Igbos, wherever we are in Nigeria celebrate our numbers and our unity and strength as a people. |

We have faced England, now France. Who's next Portugal? Nigeria is sweeping Western Europe! They will have to be prepared since after beating France we will have to face either Portugal or Argentina then Spain or Brazil. |
oludashmi:Since when did the Ikwerre and Ukwuani clans stop being Igbo? Man you should really stay sway from things you don't know. Ikwerre:Igbo is not the same as Itsekiris : Yoruba. Ikwerre speak a dialect of Igbo. A more reasonable comparison is Ekpeye:Igbo Yoruba:Itsekiris. But I'm sure you've had no previous knowledge of them.: |
