Lmao ![]() Afam, congrats oo. I thought I once saw you write something about having a Yoruba lady? Echefu kwa ogo gi nwaanyi, Ileke Idi, ma o ruo oge omugwo. ![]() |
Tony Spike: Thanks, Odumchi. The main reason why OSEBRUWA is mainly used by Igbos in Anambra and Delta (Western Igbos) is possibly due to their proximity to Bini Kingdom. The cultures and traditions of Igbos around those areas are said to be infused with lots of Bini influence. Which brings me to the next question. The divine names, OSANOBUWA and OLUWA, are particular used in the two ancient kingdoms of Bini and Yoruba/Oyo respectively. This is no coincidence, as both kingdoms at one time, shared royal and traditional history. This brings us to the question of originality which is quite obscure to me. I am tempted to propose that word came from the Yoruba end, as the name is more widespread in Yorubaland. However, I cannot at this time come to a conclusion. You're right about it being a result of proximity and influence. In fact, the Igbo in parts of Abia and Rivers call God Obasi because of their interactions with the Ibibio/Annang who call God Abasi. However, the universal Igbo name for God is Chi. |
Lol that's what we call it where I come from. We don't have an indigenous name for it, atleast not one that I know of. |
Lol, Ify ka o ruonu mgbe ohu. Gbalia bia fee ali nna gi o! |
Tony Spike: Well, I'm only trying to key a missing historical link. I'm still coming to the reason(s) why the word isn't widespread in Igboland like CHUKWU/CHI.In Igbo land, the name for God changes as you go from place to place. In Imo, Abia, Rivers, and Ebonyi, people call God: Obasi di na elu/Eke kere uwa/Chukwu Abiama. While in Enugu, Delta, and Anambra, as Ify pointed out, God is called Olisa/Ose/Olisabuluwa/Osa. A section of Delta state also calls God Oselobua/Osonobua. However, at the same time, God is recognized as Chukwu/Chineke/Chileke throughout Igboland because of the Igbo belief in the existence of a supreme deity. |

I'd like to remind everyone that you need a total of two nominations to secure your positions and so far no one has two nominations. I would also like to ask more people for their active participation because without it this whole thing can't happen. Please nominate these contestants/tribunal members in order to help validate their positions! |
duni04: Can i nominate myself?Yes, you can. Onto the tribunal or as a contestant? PointB: I hardly frequent the culture section. I would like to grace this debate as an observer. Perhaps, it's an opportunity to learn a thing or two.Pleased to have you here. ![]() We could definitely use your organizational skills on the tribunal. |

Gboliwe: Where would I fit in? Debate on culture just like politics is highly volatile. We have to be very careful. I'm in whichever way.I don't think that should be a deterrent. The discussion, of course, would be moderated. Where do you think you would belong? Would you like to be a contestant or a member of the tribunal? |
I'm asking you guys to please step out and participate so that we can not only catalyze intellectually stimulating discussions but reveal to the entire site the hidden jewel which is our beloeved Culture section! Ladies and gentlemen, Ogas and madams, It is my pleasure to announce to you all that the time for the culture section to assume its rightful place in the "pantheon" of Nairaland has come, and what other way is there to do this if not by hosting Nairaland's first cultural debate? I would like for us to host a debate in which a four contestants would be pitted against each other in order to compete for a championship. DETAILS -I intend for there to be a tribunal of judges who would regulate the debate (which would last for a set amount of time) and then appoint a winner based on their judgements. -The debate would be set up in a tournament style: (X vs Y) - (A vs B) (X vs A) -The two winners of the two debates shall then be pitted against each other in order to determine the winner of the last round. -The winner of the last round shall be the winner of the entire contest. PARTICIPANTS There shall be (5) members of the tribunal who are to be nominated by you NairalandersI There shall be (7) contestants, however on the actual day of the debate, only the first four will be allowed to participate. TOPICS There shall be three topics selected for discussion: one for each group, and then one final one for the two finalists. The topics are to be voted upon by you Nairalanders and can be based on anything cultural (ex: gay marriage in Nigeria, westernization, teaching kids English vs native tongue) and etc). CONDITIONS Each of the contestants would be asked to choose opposing sides on a topic (ex: Legalizing gay marriage in Nigeria) and would be asked to defend their positions. The person that defends their position best, according to the judgement of the tribunal, would be recognized as the winner. DATE The official date of the debate has not been set. However, it will be sometime in the near future. Don't hesitate to ask any questions that you may have. My hat goes off to Jarus, my inspiration for this. |

afam4eva: What exactly is the governor doing. Why has he neglected Aba?The actual "development" which he has enacted is centered mainly in Umuahia where he is either erecting one "world class" hospital or one "international" business center. Other than that, he's busy acquiring mansions and landed properties throughout the state. Let me draw one particular case to your attention. Can you imagine that in the whole of Arochukwu (the third-largest town in Abia) there is not one decent government hospital? As a result of this, the mortality rate is unnecessarily high and people (especially children) continue to die due to preventable diseases. The only semi-decent hospital in the entire LGA is private-owned and is in Abam. Aside from that the next one is in Ohafia (which is nearly an hour away due to the poor roads). If you wanted a decent hospital, aside from the one in Ohafia, you'd have to drive all the way to Umuahia. |
*Kails*:Kindly repost this in the linked thread. Sorry for the inconvenience. |
love$life:I think it depends on the type of house that you have and on your ability to clean. If you have a natural/sand/dirt floor, then don't expect people to walk around barefoot lol. However, if your floor is wood decking or tiled, then it's really up to you (in my opinion). Next time, please make use of this thread if you'd like to see a topic on the homepage: https://www.nairaland.com/1004554/promoting-culture-board-frontpage |
The Igbo believe that a soul is not yet at rest until its physical body is united with Ali (the earth). In this way, a man's body is reincorporated into the cosmic order and his spirit is allowed to join the ranks of his ancestors in Ali Nmuo (the spirit world), continuing the cycle of rebirth. It's also believed that if a man dies and his body is not properly buried, then the man's spirit will roam restlessly through the earth and will manifest itself in the form of calamities and bad luck. The Igbo have a special reverence for the earth which is manifested in practices such as the pouring of libations, and terms such "aruru ali" (abomination) which literally means: "disrupting/turning the earth". These are all reasons why Igbo men/women prefer to take their loved-ones' bodies home for burial instead of leaving them in a foreign cemetery. |

Ify, I think that no matter how much you think Onlytruth has wronged you, you should atleast allow him to finish his tenure in peace before you take up any issues you have with him. He is still the acting representative of Ndi Igbo and we should at least accord him with the level of dignity deserving of his post. Ndeewo nu. |
Antivirus92: why did you focus so much on that particular statement?Because that statement epitomizes your mentality regarding Igbo affairs. This lack of understanding is why the Igbo peoples are the way they are today. |
Antivirus92: stop deceiving ur self by throwing marriage into this discussion. Marriage is a universal stuff, even whites do observe it. But anything "new yam" is strictly igbo no matter how it is being celebrated. Again you and ur company were the ones to start igbo diversity, differences and not me. When i was busy claiming that we are one, you're busy pointing out differences. Nobody contributed to the formation of anambra as the stereotype of igbo. It's just natural and there's nothing you can do about it.So statements like this are encouraging unity? The truth still remains that the anambra/eri/nri people have a better understanding of what igbo is all about than most other people that claim to be igbo. The language, custom, tradition of igbos originated from nsukka -awka-nri-orlu axis, which many historians call the origin of igbo people. I have said it many times that the southern people are confuse about the term 'igbo'Let's find a way to tie this back into your question before it leads to something else. |
Antivirus92: you don't need to tell me that lie in different culture zones before i know. One is adulterated while one is not. How do you expect them(nnewi and aro ) to celebrate their respective festivals exactly alike? What makes the two festivals the same is that they are being dedicated to yam and not how they are celebrated.Every culture in this world has a marriage ceremony. What you're saying is that all of those ceremonies are exactly the same irrespective of practices simple because they are marriage ceremonies. I don't blame you for the bolded statement. I blame those who have contributed to the formation of Anambra as the stereotype of Igbo. Antivirus92: Again mindset like urs is capable of causing havoc among igbos cause you focus more on differences(aro and nnewi, south and north, diversities)etc instead of unity. I seriously doubt ur leadership abilities cause you're too cunny.Lol, look who's talking about unity. Weren't you the person that wrote this? The truth still remains that the anambra/eri/nri people have a better understanding of what igbo is all about than most other people that claim to be igbo. The language, custom, tradition of igbos originated from nsukka -awka-nri-orlu axis, which many historians call the origin of igbo people. I have said it many times that the southern people are confuse about the term "igbo". you're too cunnyCunning? Funny? |
