Orhogbua:
Hello Nairalanders my name Tshepo Ajayi i am from Behchuana,My father is NIgerian specifically Bini and Yoruba and My mother from botswana I have always been interested in history in fact I major it in uni and coming from a bini-yoruba background i have a lot of historical heritage from of course these two ethnic groups and my two favourite civilisations are benin and ife and there relationship is something i wish to explore with the knowledge of the nairalanders and of course nigerians in this forum to explore it FULLY

of course these things can get quite tribalistic as i have observed
SO HERE ARE THE RULES

1. NO opinions to be thrown about without proof etc Sources, citations from experts on the subject (but this must also be be sourced) or traditions

2. NO BIGOTRY no bigotry shall be thrown around in this thread no matter how flustered or angry you are KEEP YOUR COMPOSURE yes i am talking about people like TAO11 or gregyboy or davidnazee who attack tribes for a little debate on nairaland

3. If you wish to debunk a statement please use sources and actual proof no emotions or such or stupid opinions

4. Statements are allowed to be made at first but can only be debunked with proof

Now of course i have my opinions with the relationship feel free to debunk with sources NOW these opinions are

1.Ife did not necessarily have a subservient relationship with benin but benin saw ife as a sort of religious site as ife has a strong religious affinity with benin thought benin has many differences in religion with ife

2 I wouldn't go as far to say that Benin was a vassal to ife but ife did have superiority and benin probabaly had ife dominated markets i do believe this ended after the oba ewuare came into power

3 The infamous "Oghene" from portuguese adventures to the itsekiri coast then occupied by benin, my professor (a man versed in african history) doesnt like the way that people use to give validity to kingdoms nearby benin superiority, the information given is iffy at best and details vague, did the portuguese see this process of handing of a brass head and symbols of authority?, or is it a misunderstanding and how did they gather this informatiion, also they never were never at the kings court in benin just near the gates by their description of the place, also where is this transfer in the traditions of benin or ife?

4 No low quality content in the form of none backed sources and of course stupid opinions like benin ruled to "ivory coast!!" and stuff like that

It's really been an interesting read so far. This topic always lives up to it's expectations 😂😂. To think it's been more back and forth from the Edo men themselves with little or no interference from the Omo Odua makes it more fascinating.. I am still waiting for French baldie to come in 😂😧😂, then lastly how it might likely round up with the Anioma people.
I know RedBonesmith is ever ready for y'all on that one though.. Once again, it's been worth the time, keep it up!

It’s really pathetic. Obviously they have been living with it, that’s why they exhibit it on here. Like I would always say, I only fear for their friends and family who don’t know. The greatest player of all time, Ronaldo sends message after Portugal's World Cup exit: Cristiano Ronaldo on IG: “I fought hard for this dream, I gave it my all. I just want to tell you all that much has been said, written and speculated but my dedication to Portugal has not changed. I would never turn my back on my country

CRISTIANO RONALDO posted an emotional statement after his “biggest and most ambitious dream” of winning a World Cup ended.

The 37-year-old could not inspire Portugal to quarter-final victory off the bench against Morocco.

He was in tears as he made his way down the tunnel after losing 1-0 to Morocco in the quarter-finals.

And he wrote on Instagram: “Winning a World Cup for Portugal was the biggest and most ambitious dream of my career.

“Fortunately, I won many titles of international dimension, including for Portugal, but putting the name of our country on the highest level in the world was my biggest dream.

“I fought for it. I fought hard for this dream. In the 5 presences that I scored in World Cups over 16 years, always alongside great players and supported by millions of Portuguese people, I gave my all.

“I left everything on the field. I never turned my face to the fight and I never gave up on that dream.

“Unfortunately, yesterday the dream ended. It is not worth reacting hot.

“I just want everyone to know that much has been said, much has been written, much has been speculated, but my dedication to Portugal has not changed for an instant.

“I was always one more person fighting for everyone’s goal and I would never turn my back on my teammates and my country.

“For now, there’s not much more to say. Thank you, Portugal. Thank you, Qatar. The dream was beautiful while it lasted… Now, it’s time to be a good advisor and allow each one to draw their own conclusions.”

Sports / Re: Does Messi Have To Win The World Cup Too Be Considered Football's Greatest? by Ofunwa111: 2:24pm On Dec 12, 2022
robosky02:

DOES MESSI HAVE TO WIN THE WORLD CUP TO BE CONSIDERED FOOTBALL'S GREATEST?

Lionel Messi, unarguably football’s greatest playing individual of this generation has been under intense attack from the football hemisphere as to whether or not he needs to win the world cup to be considered the greatest of all time.
Hi

Several questions need to be asked? Is messi one of the greatest? Yes. As a matter of fact, he is one of the greatest sportsmen ever.

Another question that needs to be asked is the definition of ‘Greatness’. Is Greatness about ability or achievements? Does Greatness in Football hinge on winning the world cup alone?

Undoubtedly, messi is precariously talented. His ability has never been questioned. His achievement with both Fc Barcelona and The Albeceleste of Argentina is staggering. With the Argentine team, he has proven himself at all levels; From the U-20 world cup at Netherlands in 2005 where and when he first caught the eye; He singlehandedly carried his team to the finals and was instrumental in the final against the Mikel Obi led Flying eagles of Nigeria.

Messi went on to win the Football event of the Olympics too in 2008 at China, and he was absolutely instrumental there too. In 2014, he captained his national team to the finals and lost to a very good German team.

Individually, Messi has been a phenomenon for his national team. Collectively, the argentines have improved since he rose to the senior team in 2006. But there are still question marks about his dedication to the national team.

The world cup is football’s biggest and most lucrative event. Players whose abilities don’t come close to messi’s have gone on to win the world cup and have written their names in the history books forever. Italian Defender, Fabio Cannavaro was FIFA player of the year in 2006 because he had captained the Azzuris of Italy to win the world cup in 2006 at Germany. So, winning the world cup is instrumental.

World cup years have proven instrumental in the past as to who wins the best player of that year. The winner of the player of the year has always had a brilliant campaign at the world cup.

Pele who won the world cup with brazil at 17 in 1958, and then went on to win subsequent editions in 1962, and 1970, becoming the only player to do so is considered by many as a more greater player than messi because of his incredulous feats with his national team. Pele scored 77 gials in 92 games for Brazil. He won the Copa Libertadaores (The South American version of the Uefa Champions League) in 1962 and 1963. He won the intercontinental super cup in 1968.

He was best player of the South American championship in 1959 where he was also top scorer, and was also the best young player at the FIFA world up the year before (1958), and was best player at the FIFA world cup in 1970. He is the youngest player to score a hatrick at the world cup, among many other personal achievements he had that endeared him to the football generation of then.

He is considered the Greatest player ever because of his goal scoring abilities and his Individual achievements at both club and country level.

Messi, however needs no introduction about his abilities. He scores with both feet, he scores with his head, and he is by far the best free-kick player the world has seen since Juninho retired. He has an incredible vision and his ability to pick passes in very tiny and cute spaces is staggering. He is a football mastermind, an upgrade on the legendary Diego Armando Maradona. He is quick, fast, direct, and intelligent with his runs, and has a great awareness and vision when off the ball. Messi is a football sage.

But does football ability equate to football greatness? He is the only player in this era to be mentioned in the same bracket with Pele and Maradona(who won the world cup in 1986 at mexico). If he wins the world cup, he would be considered as the greatest footballer ever.

Even Messi himself knows that he has to win it ! His true fans know too. To those who think he doesn't have to, just a friendly reminder; He'd still remain second to Diego, and the argument with CR7 continues.... wink

England's Failure: A Resultant Of Gareth Southgate's Biased Selection

England, after becoming world champions in 1966, had to wait for until 1990 in Italy before they could record another world cup semifinal appearance and also, had to wait another 28(2018) before making another under the tutorage of current manager, Gareth Southgate. Truth be told, no England manager has had more international tournament knockout games than him despite just being in charge for over 6 years now. A feat that has seen him earn some credit from pundits as he brought England so close to a major trophy in 2021 when they lost the European championship to penalties to Italy. Though a defeat, many saw it as an upgrade to the 2018 fourth place finish at the FIFA world cup in Russia. Consequently, expectations were high on the team going into Qatar as a result of the team's large number of players who're playing top level football ans are in the form of their lives. Hence, it was known that the manager would have sleepless nights as he has to pick just 26 players heading into Qatar. Upon the public release of the squad, many were left speechless at the omission of many players like Fikayo Tomori, Tammy Abraham, Jadon Sancho, James Ward Prose and Ivan Toney, just to mention a few. Also, it was a surprise to see players like Connor Gallagher and Callum Wilson and to an extent, Harry Maguire make the list being that he(Maguire) has lost his place in Manchester United to a better pair of Martinez and Varane. Also, the issue of who was best fit for the RB position was a huge matter of debate as all three RB's are spectacular players and have a huge value on the counter depending on the team's formation. Consequently, fans expected the players to fight assiduously for a starting shirt. More surprising for me at this world cup, is that one of England's most inform and creative players, James Madison, didn't play a single minute of the ball in Qatar which, is a shock to many. It is understandable that the coach has his preference, but then, it is so unruly of the coach who's hoping to beat the world champions come up with a poor game plan. Personally, I would expect that immediately after England's unexpected equalizer, a proper presser be brought on to ease the work load for a very impressive Bukayo Saka and a more direct Phil Foden who was trying to create a direct open up play for counter attacks as all four French defenders with the exception of Raphael Varane, marked very terrible yesterday. I was dazed to see Jordan Henderson remain on the pitch doing nothing and there was a Mason Mount and James Madison on the bench doing nothing. Easily, were the coach brilliant enough to read games, he should have seen that Jordan Henderson was just not good enough to make the team let alone, start a world cup QF game against the world champions. Hence, England's journey in Qatar ended the way it usually does at major tournaments despite the irrelevant and overwhelming press hype. If for any reason, anyone is to blame for England's crash, then it should be the coach as he was irrational, biased and unprofessional with his selection.

You are right. His biased selection caused his downfall.

Do you know what it is for a team like barcelona to have won just 3games in two consecutive UcL season. Haba!

Between 2016 and 2021 he was in Barcelona and they never won the UCL, so who is to blame ?. Whatever they are facing now, the club caused it. From cheating with the help of UEFA to building their game around him and some players .. Should we say it’s karma ? Enrique saw this coming but they had a problem with him for trying to correct it .The players who were also a part of it are no longer as good as they were, or not playing, so it’s expected that the decline would be this bad. Let’s not forget the coach is not tactically sound and should have learnt more before taking over at the helms of his dream club and besides, he’s got some racist mentality which is evident in his selection process. So for now, let Barca follow the process of rebuilding, which comes with losing some and winning some.

IntelChief:
My elder sister is around 32 years and still not serious with marriage. Her only focus is on making money and she had been very successful in that aspect. She has a well paying job and is not only comfortable but also supports me financially sometimes.

But I just can't imagine why she is not disturbed about the fact that she is still single at her age. A lot of guys I know had been approaching her but she never accepts even a relationship offer from them, talk more of marriage. (And am very sure that she is not a lesbian or any of that).

As a church guy, I have seen a lot of women stock in this not being married thing and jumping from one church to the other seeking for husbands. Some of them, out of desperation, fall victims in the hands of fake pastors and sharp guys. I really don't want my sister to go through such.

Initially, I wasn't disturbed, but right now, this issue is burning not only me but also my aging mother. My mother had even stylishly urged my sister to go get married on several occasions. But she won't.

What really got me mad was when I was discussing with my sister some days back about her future plans. She told me stuffs like planning on travelling abroad for greener pastures, bla bla bla, but made no mention of marriage.

Honestly guys, I am tired. And as a man in the family, I am thinking of changing it for my sister. Am planning on threatening her that if she doesn't take the issue of marriage serious, I will go physical with her and teach her some lessons. But the issue is that she is my elder sister and I have some respect for her. And my action might end up affecting the bond in the family.

Talking to her about it is okay , but you saying or thinking about going physical with her shows you have a problem.
