A former Presidential candidate of the defunct All Peoples Party, Chief Olu Falae, on Tuesday escaped death when one of the policemen escorting a bullion van opened fire on the vehicle conveying the politician.
Our correspondent gathered that the incident happened at Ile Oluji Junction on the expressway while Falae was traveling to Ile-Ife for a visit of the Afenifere leaders with the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi.
Sources at Ife palace told our correspondent that Falae who is the National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party, briefed some persons at Ile-Ife about the incident before the meeting with the Ooni.
“I was coming from Akure approaching Ilesa. I saw some vehicles ahead of me. There was a bullion van in front, the vehicles ahead of us were overtaking the bullion van and we followed too.
“I barely overtook them when I heard a shot and a bang on my car. We stopped and we saw that they had fired at our car.
“They didn’t stop. We stopped at Erin-Ijesa and complained to the police at the check-point that we were fired at by some policemen attached to a bullion van at Ile-Oluji juction,” Falae was quoted to have said.
Efforts to speak directly to Falae were unsuccessful as calls put to his telephone did not connect.
However, a leader of the Afenifere in Osun State, Mr. Niyi Owolade, confirmed the shooting to our correspondent on the telephone.
Owolade said he spoke to Falae directly and he told him that a policeman attached to a bullion ban shot at his car while coming to Ife.
He said, “I just spoke to him and he confirmed it. He said his car was shot at by a bullion van’s escort.
“Chief said he would take it up because such thing should not be allowed.”
The personal assistant to Falae, Capt, Moshood Raji, also confirmed the incident to our correspondent in Akure on the telephone.

A total 158 Nigerians are waiting to be executed over drugs related offences in China, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia, the Senate said on Tuesday.

Moving a motion tagged: “Nigerians involvement in illicit global drugs trade and increase in domestic drug abuse by Nigerian youth”, Senator Gbenga B. Ashafa (APC, Lagos East) said 120 of persons are in China.

He said 30 are in Malaysia, seven in Indonesia and one in Singapore and that six Nigerians were executed for drugs related offences last year.

He noted that the Malaysian authorities have again issued a strong statement that 40 percent of the foreigners being arrested for drug offences are from Nigeria.

Student disguise

He observed that in their desperation, Nigerians are disguising as “university students”, colluding with drug syndicates to undermine the visa system and gain entrance into Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and other drug traffic routes.

“On getting there, they abandon the education agenda and get busy with their illicit and illegal drug business activities; trading in opiates, cocaine, heroin, cannabis and amphetamines," he said.

He said that the Federal Government has not swung into strategic action to curb the menace of drug couriers and their sponsors both in and out of Nigeria.

He noted that the incidence of young Nigerians abusing substances including Codeine, Rochephenol, Tramadol, heroin, Cannabis Sativa (Indian Hemp) and even different grades of crack cocaine have become prevalent in across the country.

Traffickers and couriers

He said Nigeria topped the list of the countries involved in drug trafficking and drug use in West Africa’s and also the list of drug couriers arrested in Europe in 2011 and 2012.

Contributing to the motion, Senator Jibrin Barau (APC, Kano North) said the rates at which housewives are abusing drugs are alarming.

“We need to do something about, it has gone beyond youth and now it is very prevalent among married women. Women who are in charge of upbringing of children are now drugs addicts,” he said.

The Senate however urged the Federal Government to restructure and reposition the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to be able to meet the challenges of evasive drug traffickers using nigerians to traffic drugs.

The emir of Kano, Malam Sanusi Lamido II has ordered the Sharia Commission in the state to liaise with office of the Deputy Inspector General of police, zone 1 to immediately commence process of repatriating the a 14-year old teenager, Ese Oruru allegedly abducted in Bayelsa state.

Ese was allegedly kidnapped by one Yunusa in Opolo, Yenagoa Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, in August, 2015.

He reportedly renamed her Aishat on arriving Kano State.

Senator Ben Murray-Bruce, former minister of finance Obi Ezekwesili as well as the governorship candidate of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Hajia Aishat Al-Hassan have shown interest in Ese’s case, demanding her immediate release.

Terry GNigerian pop star, Terry G, on Sunday, survived a ghastly motor accident in Lagos.

The accident involving his new Range Rover Sport and another vehicle, occurred while he was on his way back from a night club between the 1st and 2nd roundabout in Lekki, Lagos state at about 6.am.

It would be recalled that this would be the second time the Akpako master would be involved in an accident in five years.


His Personal Assistant, PA, Urchineke, told the NET that the ‘Free Madness’ crooner is very fine.

Urchineke said, “He was not the one driving and somehow, he managed to escape without Injury. As I’m talking to you now, he’s at home with his wife but his car is badly damaged.

“It was one of his boys that drove and they are fine.”

When asked if anyone of them sustained serious injuries, the PA said: ‘It’s only the guy that drove that sustained minor injuries, but Terry and the other two guys in the Range Rover are okay.


“I am presently at the spot where the accident occurred. We are moving the car.”

The PA said many of our friends have called and they were very scared because the picture of his car they saw on social media is damaged beyond repair.

“He’s not in any hospital as people may think,” he added.

Terry G in his terse response said, “So you self no believe say nothing happen to me, I dey kampe.

“I am ok my brother. I just say make I rest. Just thank God for me say nothing happen to anyone of us,” he noted.

veteran Nollywood actor, Festus Aguebor, has been reported dead.

The Actor died barely six days after popular actor, Mike Odiachi, was reported dead.

The news of his demise was announced by former Director, Actors Guild of Nigeria and ace producer, Fidelis Duker, on his Facebook page.


Duker who did not disclose the time or cause of death, wrote, “Adieu talented and veteran Actor Festus Aguebor.

“Remember your brilliant delivery of Chief Odeku in my 2002 movie, Family Contract starring Desmond Elliot, Chioma Akpotha, Steph-Nora Okere, Afolabi Bolasodun Makinde, Grace Evaly, amongst others.

“May your soul rest in peace, Amen(sic).”

The ‘Igodo’ actor known for his white beards, before his death left Lagos and relocated to his home state of Edo about four years ago. He is believed to be in his 70’s.
