Mumjb:It's a bit late but welcome! |
fabmum:Pele. It may take a while but I'll keep an eye out for Ilupeju and its environs. Just to let newcomers to the thread know, there's a book drive going on where you and mums in your environs can buy books together for a good price. Also, we are planning on forming Mummy-and-Me groups in our areas. |
Aleesha0815:Hello! I'm struggling a bit with the email attached to this account so I can't really access my PMs. What's up? |
zemaye:HOW DARE YOU, MADAM!! Mama Charly is the grandmother to my future son-in-law so he and Baby E need that money to set themselves up in the future at Clarence House. Now go and apologise to Mummy Charles (adjusts tiara on my head and walks away majestically). ![]() |
dunamit:The fart I know is called "Quaffing" where you are passing air through your vajayjay. It is embarrassing but that is Motherhood for you! for me I noticed it happened more when the fan was in my direction and I wasn't wearing undies. But it can be cured, your vajayjay is all muscles so it can be toned. Try doing Kegel exercises (the muscles you use for peeing, squeeze them 20 times every hour). I guess that is why our mothers make us sit down on stool. Whichever method works, please go for it. |
fabmum:It depends on you. We can try and find more people in your location so you're not driving too far though. |
Adeime:Formula should be fine. I think you got great answers already! |
stadora:I think at that age you can give raw pureed apple. Does he have teeth, If he does he can try chewing very small chunks of raw apple. Apparently learning to chew teaches them how to use their jaw and talk. You can make pap?! Heyyy Gawwdd o what was I doing when my mates were learning life changing skills?? |
Ephraimspy: comment of the month. |
Adeime:I don't know if he has singing books. Can you join he Yaba group if it's convenient for you. |
rezzy:True and not true. A couple of kids in England did an experiment: they planted 2 bean plants. One was watered with water boiled or regular and the other was watered with microwaved water. The one with regular water grew faster. Nutrionists believe that microwaving does make food lose some nutrients but not enough to make a meal totally unnutritious: beans will still be proteinous, yams will still have enough carbohydrates. So, can you get cancer from a microwave heating up food by eating said food? No But microwaves work by emitting some small amounts of radiation. Which is why you probably shouldn't buy an old microwave, as the door may not close well and allow trace amounts of radiation through. So, can you get cancer from standing in front of a microwave that doesn't have a well-sealed door and is constantly on? Probably, very, very hard but there's a small chance. By the way, we get radiation from a lot of things: the sun, an x-ray etc. You may get cancer much faster by eating processed foods loaded with artificial sweeteners and MSG. So noodles with a bottle of coke daily, your body will break down faster. And as Climate change gets worse, you may get cancer from being constantly in the Sun. The only reason skin cancer isn't so prevalent in Africa is because God and Nature ensured millions of years ago to keep the skin colour of those close to the equator dark with high melanin. So its best for ladies to stop bleaching or toning (all those chemicals are shutting down kidneys and livers, ladies). And as for men, remember this, the Ozone layer depleted a lot more in our lifetime than in our grandfathers and didn't recover as much. So yeah, your ancestor didn't have cancer doesn't mean jack. |
Eolowu1, has his navel healed and sealed off? If it has then it's not a big deal. If it hasn't, Please follow Tojued's advice and see a doctor. Tojued: |
So, concerning the book buy, Kidco has explained everything to me and here is what we discussed: 1. 50 books for N12,000 2. Shipping charges range from N700 to N1500 depending on your location 3. He can mix up the books according to age. So mamas, you can buy books in the age 0-5 years group, 0-3 years group, 6-12 years group, 0-6 years group Yaba mums (rofemiguwa, Adeime, rhukie and cutiereborn), your total is N13,000 (12+N1000 shipping). You will end up paying N3,250 for 12-13 books per person. That's a good deal. If you agree, pls nominate one person from your group to collect payment and also collect the books from Kidco. May I suggest Rofemiguwa because she is working in Yaba which means her address is probably easiest to find for all of you? And if you are interested, please drop your location and mention me. Thanks. Here are pictures of the baby books Kidco sent.

HiAll:Yes it was very helpful, thank you! |

For mothers who are in Lagos, you do have polluted groundwater (especially if you are not in Magodo and it's environs) because of the topography of Lagos, but most of your pollution cannot be solved by heavy use of disinfectants (too many heavy metals from general environmental pollution, remember that thread where the Nigerian Health Organization or Nutritional agency warned people about eating fish caught from the lagoon?). And poor Urban planning means presence of Faecal Coliforms in a lot of ground water (that's why Lagos should actually have Government-run sewage). But heavy application of Dettol will not really help that much, boil your water, filter your water. My mum used to pour cleaning chemicals in our water till we itched. It's one of the reasons I chose to use clothe diapers (disposable doesn't break down cleanly in the landfill and that landfill at Ojota has started polluting the water around it). I believe countries like the U.K. are encouraging parents to use cloth diapers as well for this issue (also, cloth diapers and cloth wipes can work out to be cheaper, especially if you use them for several kids). Oya I'm going to drink Fanta, all that typing was hard ![]() |
Concerning Antibacterial soap During the Ebola panic, one of my siblings was (as a medical doctor) involved in the government effort. I remember being very worried and insisting every one in the house use Antibacterial soap. He told me then, that regular soap was more than enough to kill most bacteria and germs we met everyday and we needed good bacteria (staph is a bacteria that is everywhere living in your skin even). He recommended against Antibacterial soaps (even in the bathroom). Today, the U.S. FDA has banned Antibacterial soaps and body wash in the United States due to concerns about one of its active ingredients (Triclosan and Trichlorocarban, which is also in Delta soap and almost every antibacterial soap on the market in Nigeria). They are also concerned about it making bacteria resistant to antibiotics. Read more here: http://nymag.com/scienceofus/2016/09/fda-bans-antibacterial-hand-soap-and-body-wash.html Now, I believe a lot of mums with older kids tend to use antibacterial soap once they start primary school (all that play, even Dettol soap runs adverts on it). Basically that article states that after research, there seems to be enough evidence to show that some of the ingredients in Antibacterial soap can cause hormone-disruption in kids. And if ordinary soap and water can do the job, why bother exposing your kids to some chemicals which may end up causing some illnesses later in life? Paeditricians encourage play outside because it develops the natural immune system of most children. And even if this info doesn't affect you now, you may want to consider not using a lot of disinfectants to be washing baby things and bathing baby if you don't have very bad water. Simple boiling of water will kill most of the surface stuff. The Nigerian govt has not said anything about this (they are barely functioning when it comes to Testing and Regulations) but my siblings in Nigeria who have kids in Nigeria tend to agree with the U.S. FDA on this matter. You can share this with other parents. So far, antibacterial hand sanitiser has been spared and allowed. But during the Ebola scare, when hand sanitiser quadrupled in price, another of my siblings (a surgeon) handed me soap and a bowl of water and said "that's all you need, that's all I use before surgery". To close: let's have our kids wash their hands before meals and after play but no need for antibacterial soaps. Thanks. Cc zaynie and Kaffy4bill (I think zaynie is a microbiologist and kaffy is a nurse, so they can weigh on this matter). |
eolowu1:I personally prefer here because I'm bad at whatsapp groups (I tend to mute all of mine because it's hard to keep track of who's saying what). But if you it can start one and invite people, it's a good idea. ![]() |
IryNky please check page 595 for the tutorial on cloth wipes. Contem2011 is hiding because she is collecting lesson money ffom me in order to teach me how to make custard and the picture below is waiting for her.

For about to wean mums, here is a good chart showing what can be given. By the way, If you are giving pap, add milk and crayfish to it. Pap is calorie-dense but poor nutritionally (I checked there are studies done by Nigerian doctors and published online about pap). From 8 months you can start adding spices like Nutmeg and Cinammon to their food. But no honey till after 12 months, Botulism is real. They sell almost all of those fruits and foods in Nigeria, including tofu (I know you can get some in Freedom Park and it is called Wara in the market). Papaya is Pawpaw (it will encourage stooling in constipated babies). Golden melon and watermelon are great (especially if we have babies refusing to drink water, water melon has 92% water). P I hope the pics are clear.

eolowu1:http://www.babycenter.com/0_baby-poop-a-complete-guide_10319333.bc Sounds like you either need to eat heavier meals or breastfeed longer on each breast before changing. Breastfeed longer, the change in colour means he's not getting enough hindmilk (milk gets thicker at the end of the supply. I don't know about the navel, other mamas?

Mamas interested in the type of fastener she used, it's called a Snappi. So far, I have only seen it sold at the Sprite in The Palms mall, Lekki. Other Shoprites don't have it. It's very good and durable. You only need 2 or 3 and they don't break. It used to cost N500 for one. It's a South African product but it's sold everywhere around the world.

Kidco, can we get books for different ages in one shipment? Cutiereborn/rhukie/rofemiguwa/Adeime: Yaba Fabmum: Ilupeju QueensC/hotmamma: Iyana Ipaja/Akowonjo Pretimum/Osas4g/OnyxGem10: Gbagada/Oworo/isheri-ijegun Tojued: Abuja Christybabe: location please? He can shop outside Lagos state. Anyone can join those groups if your location is close to thwm Doubledouble where are you located do you want to share with some other mums? It's 50 books for N12,000. Ladies, you can either buy in groups of 5 and get 10 books each that cover from 0-5 years or buy in groups of 3 or however you want it. Please kidco I'm going to message you now about shipping and stuff. Thanks. |
firestar:Arigatogozaimasu! I'll keep an eye peeled out for it. Though it has become expensive to eat healthy. Nigeria, always looking short term and never thinking long term. All the cheap shortcuts for food will lead to an ageing population who will nees even better healthcare. And we are not fixing that in the next 7 years. |
EfemenaXY:It is better to earn N25,000 and live in Ondo state than to earn N25,000 and live in Lagos state. A cup of beans is now much more expensive than a cup of rice. You cannot survive without begging as even your transport costs alone will hurt (especially if the job is on the island and you live on the mainland). See, offer something people need in this recession. I wouldn't mind some dresses for my LO but they cost a minimum of N8000 at the shop and Balogun is such a stressful place to go to. But I cannot find a reliable tailor. Imagine if I could, imagine if several thousand parents could. That's a business waiting to happen. If I find a decent tailor, she gets 10 customers and immediately jacks up her prices, dreaming big dreams. Every business needs their growing time, no beam sprout entered the soil and started producing beans the next week. So keep your prices reasonable, I'm sure N1000 per simple dress is reasonable. All you need is a machine. There are a few other ideas floating around. |
I was going to write something but the antispambot banned me and I can't remember.... Hotmum, the area for children and baby things is Dosunmu. I have no idea of how to describe it as it is a madhouse and you cannot drive there directly. Your best bet is to go to the big central mosque, on that street you will see several people selling boxes and bags of all sorts, including schoolbags Around there is Dosunmu (20 mins walk from the mosque). Another route is also from the main balogun street (the first left off Broad street from under the bridge where they take buses), drive down. Infact just take a Keke napep from there. |
Hi Dominique I was posting on the Newborn thread in Health section and the Antispambot banned me. I've sent an email to the mods and I'm being ignored. Could you take a look? I didn't violate any rules, I was replying on getting something for her baby. Thanks. |
rofemiguwa:All children grab phones. It's because you pay attention to it that they pay attention to it 3 months is early sha, maybe keep it from her till 5 months (because it apparently doesn't make sense to them all they see are colours and hear sounds) but if you can pay for a tab, okay. However, I must warn you my nephews and niece destroyed an iPad and several phones all before the age of 2. So you must have the heart to see your LO drooling saliva on the tab, chewing one corner or using it to bang on the floor ans be able to laugh in a tinkly manner "hahahhaa" and not cry inwardly. ![]() Other sabi mamas? |
