Back to your question, I experienced similar thing during my service year. But the most important thing is that, don't quit now if you don't have alternative Job at hand to take care of yourself.


During my service year, after school I don't involve in any extra activities; be it school lesson or anything related to school.

I don't even like having conversation with the school proprietor. Mostimes, I greet him and any attempt to create a conversation, I ignore immediately.

He only cares about his school growth. He'll overused you once he noticed that You've potentials.

You said you teach his kids on Saturday and Sundays, you caused this. You should've told him that you've something important you do on Sats and Sundays.

Pls, don't give him a smiling face at all till you get another place. The grass isn't always greener at the other side.
Most of these school proprietors behave like demigods. Go to Ogun State, you'll understand better. . Don't allow him to use you.

Like I stated in my post, I hate been friends with my Boss, I hate to be close to them all, because they don't actually care about you. They only care about their organization. So any Employee who is carried away by the assumption that he/she is liked by Their boss is only living in a fool's paradise. He keeps drawing me closer to himself even when I don't want it. We are from same state though and even from same senatorial zone.

As for those who like to insult people on this platform, I pity them cos it tells a lot about who they truly are

Do you think the salaries of those 40 something staff would come as at when due if the parents and their wards were not satisfied?

Oga, I'm not sure u know what you're saying. You think any sch will ever grow without the input of good teachers? The way some of u understimate teachers in this counyis really very appalling. I can't fault you, because even your Govt does not place much premium on Education. Ok since the sch owners have built their schools, why can't they become the teachers?
There are no labor laws in this country that is why u see most Employers mistreating their employees

You don't need to switch off ur phone because of him. Whenever he called u in odd hour, don't pick the call. When he eventually ask you the next day, tell him that you slept off. When he called u another time, don't pick. If he ask again, tell him that you forgot ur phone in ur friend place. If you keep giving him excuses he will stop disturbing u with unnecessary calls.

Don't mind the dude. I've always known a man is behind that monika. My advice for u is to stay calm. When we work for pple we shouln't always work for the sake of comfort nd money but rather we should use the opportunity to learn frm them. Learn how he runs the school so that when u have urs the experience can help u.

It is not a crime for them to negotiate for you since the kids to be taught during private lessons are in your school already but if the pay is smaller than you want, you have the whole power to reject it for you to maintain your sanity. Look at what to do : If you are receiving like 10,000 for a particular child(ren); and they are like 3 in number. That is 10,000 naira per lesson, which is 30,000 in a month and another parent agrees to pay 15,000 for his child (ren); then you have the right to drop one of those who pays 10,000. Accept the highest bidder, no story

Although I am not a teacher, but I can relate with what you are going through with your boss. He is the boss and of course you are just the puppet who is naturally at his whims and caprices. He has practically visualised you as a utility in the system which might have been promted by your perceived levelled-headedness or productiveness. This is probably the reason why he feels at ease to call you without due respect to your privacy.
You would only get out of this loop by making him realise that you also knw your worth by demanding for a higher pay. Tell him you've got offers from some other institutions that are willing to pay you more money and let him be left with the option or either loosing you or paying a substantive salary.
However, he doesn't comply then you should start looking out for a better job while you don't give him any opportunity to further disrespect you.

He had only just raised my salary to 40k last month and warned me not to tell any of my colleagues. I started with 25k almost two years ago

Probably he's trying to manage and be at peace with the parents so they don't take their children out of the school since it's just about 3 years.

I think growing students population isn't very easy and one have to do it with care.

Again, he should be concerned about building high standards which includes disciplining of both erring students and teachers as this will make the school stand the test of time.

If you're not comfortable and can't keep up with his demands, you can as well start planning your way out which I don't think would be difficult for you getting job elsewhere with your experience.


Besides, they say "CUSTOMERS ARE ALWAYS RIGHT".

Teachers are the ones promoting the image of the school and raising it's standard. Trust me, if u don't have good teachers, you can't grow a school. If your best Teachers are resentful towards you and your organization due to Mistreatment, it will rubb off the learners thereby leading to a fall in standard.

It seems he sees you as the power engine of that school. What I observe is that he sees potential and leadership ability in you.
If you don't quit, I see you becoming the principal or part of the school's management in future when that school become big. Mark my words.

In any case, this is your stage of preparation, cus, It is most likely you become a school proprietor in future. No one undertake a given task without passing through the stage of preparation, so that he/she will not fail. That's when his or her diligence, patience and loyalty are being tested.

You are a typical Nigerian employer. Yes, customer is king but that does not mean you shouldn't appreciate your staff or gently protect them when they are in right.

Op this scenario requires a delicate balancing. Yes, the parents bring the funds but an employer should also be be willing to GENTLY support his staff when the evidence is overwhelmingly in their favour

well, as a professional, I will advice you speak with your boss one on one about his incessant calls rather than blocking him. I feel he is doing all that to make sure you don't quit your job cos you are the best so far. So, call him and reassure him that you aren't leaving for now and to stop calling you often. If he had no respect for you he won’t be calling you. You won the best teacher of the year and so must have something to offer. What you need to do is stop taking calls after a particular time when you get home. Initially, he may not understand. But be polite and let him know that you need to rest so you can give your best in school.

He is paying me for that. But he was the one that fixed the amount he would pay me. Himself and wife are so fond of doing this and I'm not happy at all. They link u up with private lessons and end up negotiating on your behalf even without your consent. Then they call to tell u that they person said he/she will pay so so amount for the lesson. They will say l should consider the parent involved since the parent has children in our sch.

He's too emotional about his sch and such is affecting his managerial acumen. I'm beginning to doubt his astuteness as a manager. I'm not an administrative staff, but he's always calling on me to join heads with the management staff and work with them

Those your bosses/employers (proprietors) know how much they are paying to bank(s) every month as loan repayment. They'll rather treat the parents as demigods, because they're the source of income. If any parent vex commot their child(ren) that's fall in revenue. Meanwhile, you staff will get your full pay.

You're so wrong on this. Who are the ones responsible for the growth of the sch in the first place? If teachers were not doing their jobs, I'm sure there wouldn't be students to enrol. Teachers are the live wire and they need to be treated with caution and respect

If decision can be taken unanimously,I bet you your employer will definitely moderate how he approached issues between the teachers and the parents.

As for the parents,it will definitely tell in their wards cos they(teachers)wouldn't want to scold such students whose parents always lodge complain.

Of course setting up a school is a business but not to dehuman your employee just to please some parents.

If I can not convince other teachers to take our stand on this,I will resign or just teach and leave the students involve with their abnormalities.

That's what I'm trying to do. I am so so passionate about teaching so I try to give my best at any given opportunity. Until every of my learner understands what I'm teaching, I will never be happy with myself. My joy is to see them excel. Teachers used to be demigods but it is no longer so. Private sch teachers are being mistreated by their employers. The oppression from parents is too much to bear

Your boss values you as a trusted employee and he is willing for you to carry the load of the school

By bringing you close to him, he is making you feel comfortable that you are important to the school

The happiness you feel of being important will allow him continue to pay you pennies for years whilst others in your field will keep advancing and make more money

Your happiness will make you believe that one day, he will recognize your value and elevate you by giving you a better deal but such a day will likely never come.


If you doubt what I'm saying, ask your boss for a raise in line with your increasing responsibility and see what he will say.

Use your sense and prepare to find a new job before you wake up one day and wonder how you wasted 4-5 yrs of your life working for a psycho

You're so correct Sir. I've been so critical of myself cos I'm not getting any younger. I need to start planning on achieving great things and this paltry sums can't take me anywhere. My house rent alone is something else. What can 40k do in this harsh economy?
He even engaged me for private tutorials on weekend, Saturdays and Sundays to teach his two daughters in SS classes. I barely have a rest except at night when I'm sleeping

Honestly you are so on point. He's afraid I may quit. There are over 42 staff there and only four of us are Males plus two drivers totalling 6 Men. The rests are women.... My boss even engaged with for Weeknd private lessons for his two children in SS classes
Saturdays and Sundays. I don't rest at all
