BlackManta:
I watched Superman again, and as much as I liked the movie, I can’t shake the feeling that James Gunn tried to do too much.

The plot isn’t strong enough, and the pacing is off. This movie lacks proper build-up.

Emotional scenes fall flat because they’re just thrown at you with no setup. And without build-up, there can be no payoff.

Take one of my favorite scenes, for example, Clark talking with his dad. That moment could have been powerful, but the Kents barely got any screen time. They appear at the start of the movie, then disappear until the end of Act 2. So why should I care?

The twist with Jor-El’s message didn’t work for me either, because the movie never showed us that Superman is who he is thanks to his human parents. Clark Kent’s background is completely ignored. In fact, Clark doesn’t even exist in this movie, it’s all Superman. And in a film stuffed with characters, Clark gets the least amount of screen time.

James Gunn clearly thinks introducing the DCU is more important than telling a standalone Superman story.

I couldn’t care less about the Boravia–Jarhampur conflict because this movie commits one of cinema’s greatest sins: telling instead of showing.

The film is weighed down by exposition, especially in the first hour.

Take the interview scene, for example. That’s where we learn Superman interfered in global politics by stopping the invasion of Jarhampur and threatening the Boravian president. This ends up being a major part of the plot, yet the movie never shows us what Superman did in Boravia.

Instead, everything is crammed into five minutes of exposition. Why?

I thought the Justice Gang was okay, but let’s be real, the only reasons they’re in this movie are:

1. Gunn wants to establish that the DCU is a shared world with other heroes.

2. Gunn loves throwing teams of D-list characters into his movies and could not resist doing it again.

The worst part for me was when Superman gets captured and poisoned with Kryptonite. The movie then shifts focus to the Justice Gang so they can get some spotlight in a Superman movie where they had no business being in the first place.

Mr. Terrific was great, Guy Gardner was fine, and Hawkgirl had her moment when she killed Netanyahu. But this was the wrong movie for them.

They got way too much screen time, time that should have gone to Clark and the Kents.

When the movie first came out, people said Superman was weak and lost too often. I defended him.
But after a second viewing, I can admit those complaints are not completely wrong.

The movie tells us Superman has been around for three years and is the most powerful being in the world. But if that’s true, the world is cooked. Who’s protecting Metropolis when Darkseid invades? The same guy who got beaten by Hammer of Boravia? Definitely not.

Lex Luthor countering Superman in a fight should not even be possible. Superman has superhuman speed. In the comics, he’s fast enough to race the Flash. But here, it feels like this Superman has not even unlocked his full speed, which makes no sense after three years.

Clearly, Gunn intentionally nerfed him. Otherwise, how would the Engineer have time to fill his body with nanites?

And don’t get me started on how easily Superman got captured. He sees Kryptonite and immediately collapses. His heat vision just stops working. A stronger Superman would have at least tried to break the glass with heat vision. This one didn’t even try. If Metamorpho hadn’t switched sides, he’d still be trapped.

Speaking of heat vision, I almost forgot he had it until the third act. He spends most of the movie just flying around and throwing punches instead of using his full power. No wonder a mindless clone pinned him down until Krypto bailed him out.

James Gunn needs to fix this and make Superman stronger. I want to see him unlock his full potential. Because right now, Omni-Man would rip him apart in seconds. It wouldn’t even be close.

At this point, Superman is my least favorite James Gunn project. All three Guardians of the Galaxy films, The Suicide Squad, and Peacemaker are better. Gunn is clearly at his best when working with D-list characters, which makes it surprising he insists on writing and directing a Superman sequel.

That said, I still like the movie. Gunn did capture Superman’s kindness, boy scout naivety, hope, and optimism.

But after my second viewing, I give it a decent 7/10.
Going by your handle and your past antecedents here viz à viz your fierce defence of the DC lore, this is a brave review, it takes gut and I applaud you for it. it totally encapsulates my feelings the movie in as much as i wanted it to be all round good.

This is hoping everyone on both divides take a cue. No lore is perfect, no filmmaker is perfect, especially whilst adapting an all timer comic character like the Supes with a rich history of cannon to choose from, things could easily go wrong or right. No need to stand in defiance and just overlook obvious flaws, just to prove that you love the lore so much and anything they drop is flawless... Hey, we might still have the darkie Snyderverse today, if audience just lapped it up, so criticism this "Superman" is getting, is for James Gunn to do better next time, if he really wants a successful universe...

I still think 7/10 is a tad too much 😬, but hey, at least you can now see the light

Nice horror film. A really good one with the twists and turns to boot. It was a nice watch but quickly descends to something annoying towards the end.

The back and forth with the non-linear story format and time jumps was a little of a nuisance but I see the vision where the narrative style pulls you into the story and wanting to know what went wrong. It's like a style for an ad — teasing you but giving you the full picture until the very end.

That stupid female cop just got her colleague killed for her stupidity with the "sexism" card. Wishing she had a taste of her stupid medicine — an insufferable character. Just tells me one thing, women are ONLY loyal to their feelings. Trust them and you're done for.
Commented on this and antyspmy ban me fgs 😩😩.

Good good film.

The non linear style had me supporting the broad, till i saw the whole thing omoor...one of my best films last year.

Baddestguyp:
You are 100% entitled to your opinion and I respect it. However since you brought up some areas, I want to comment on them...

First of all, what version of Superman is "canon" to the comics?
When you claim this Superman is for comic book fans, it's hard to get what you mean because as far as I am aware, Synder's version is also for comic fans since there are so many variations of the character...

Also, I recall saying from my preview of the trailers that it seemed to be a movie that "humanized" Superman...and made him more vulnerable...
I thought that was a good idea and I still think it could have been...

But after watching the movie, I think it was a good idea that was taken way too far that it became bad.

I cringed hard at the whole Superman's speech to Lex that he was just as human as the rest of us... because he wasn't. The entire speech seemed like it was written by someone on Wattpad...that was how bad it was... especially coming from Superman...

I think somewhere in the middle of Synder and James Gunn's versions would have worked better...instead Gunn made a character that was almost opposite of what Synder did...

Just like how Synder took his version of Superman too far, James Gunn did the same in the opposite direction...

To make matters worse, Superman in this movie became a street level superhero getting beaten by every tom, dick and Harry...
Maybe that is also comic accurate?

Also, I really have nothing to go on with Lois Lane since the movie starts with her character arc already completed...
I don't know how her relationship and chemistry with Superman was great to you. There was really nothing to go by for me. Their entire relationship arc had been completed off-screen before the movie began, but we are supposed to somehow care about it?

While we all knew this movie was not going to be an origin story, the effects of the lack of an origin story affected immersion in the movie. It made it hard to care for or fully understand the motives of characters whose arc were completed before the movie began.

It was hard to care about his relationship with Lois Lane since it was not built, same as the motives of Lex Luthor. His envy was built upon the premise that Superman "took his shine".

But we never saw Superman do that, we don't see Superman's rise as a symbol, we are simply told he did. That makes it hard to care about Lex Luthor and "understand" the character or where he is coming from...even if we ultimately disagree with him...

In other words, Lex Luthor became nothing more than a shallow figurehead character who simply exists that way because there has to be a Lex Luthor...
This is the character that is our main antagonist.

To make matters worse, Gunn's idea of a smart Lex is him calling out random alphabets and digits to his goons while predicting Superman's moves...
It felt like a 9 years old kid's idea of a smart character...

At the end of the day, my investment would have been much better if the movie didn't start with completed arcs...
It made it hard to get invested in several characters and even pivotal parts of the story that were mostly dependent on the "completed arcs"

Knowing beforehand that the movie was not an origin story doesn't make it better. Especially because the entire "verse" before it was rebooted and this is the new canon.
For all the comically and canonically correct praise the movie has been getting from said CBM fans, i have seen next to zero praises for the actual plot, which was next to abysmal...a good plot saves the movie imo, instead it has an empty core, soulless if you if, leaving the said CBM fans grasping at the superficial just to see something good to say about the movie.

I think James Gunn listened to the fans to much, got caught up in the Snyder comparisons, that he wanted this not to look like MoS so much, he overthought and overdid it, so much that the film lacked any semblance of a linear Identity and it's just a mash up of sequences at every turn of each new scene, leaving a sense of "what did i just see? at the end. If this is what was supposed to kick off another new era of DCU, then it looked anything but, seemed like a 4th or 5th movie in a franchise that has already laid good character arcs, build ups, 3 movies prior.

I can see why CBM fans would like it, after all, it is not as "dark as MoS", but then again, it wasn't made for just CBM core base is it?.

Anyways i know what i saw, and i doubt anybody that truly know what a good CBM should be, remembers this in a year or 2.

Superman (2025)

I fear there might never be a truly great CBM blockbuster for a very, very long time…

I’m greatly at odds with this film because, with all the weight of expectations riding on it, there were so few things I liked and so many I disliked and it all stems from James Gunn being the maker of this movie.

The little things I liked:
For all the talk about the unusual CC and grading in the trailers and teasers, the final cut was a visual marvel. The whites of the snow were absolutely whiting, the green Kryptonite was bangingly greening, and Supes’ iconic red trunks were brilliantly red. It reminded me of GOTG Vol II's colour palette 🎨, no surprise since the same cinematographer worked on both.

David Corenswet as Superman was an all-timer casting choice. He looked born to play the role, and in the hands of a visionary filmmaker, his talents would have been put to much better use. Sadly, that’s where the positives end.

Now to the bad:
The plot was a clunky mess. From the opening scene, it felt half-done like we were supposed to have watched a previous film to understand what was going on. Crucial details had already happened off-screen, killing any chance of suspense or buildup that a good CBM needs. From there, it all went pear-shaped.

The most important part of Superman’s lore is his identity crisis wrestling with the weight of being the most powerful alien who wants to save everyone, while still being a Kansas farm boy working at the Daily Planet. We see none of that. For what’s supposed to be an origin story and the new DCU’s kickoff, his personal struggle is completely absent. Even his relationship with Lois Lane, another key arc, had already happened off-screen..zero buildup.

Worse, the story shifts focus away from Superman in a Superman movie to the “Justice Gang” (a goofy name, but hey, it’s James Gunn). Ironically, I was impressed with Mr. Terrific, he showed up and actually got things done, while Superman was constantly getting his butt kicked by every random goon Lex Luthor threw at him. It made the whole thing feel like a Justice Gang movie that happened to have Superman mumbling in the background. Superman is supposed to be larger than life, but Gunn stripped away the soul and essence that makes the character iconic. If he weren’t in the film, you’d barely notice, despite the title card saying Superman.

All of these problems come down to James Gunn. His strength has always been ragtag bands of misfit characters and that’s fine. But translating that style to a Tier-A comic icon doesn’t work. This movie feels less like the launch of a meaningful universe and more like Gunn’s nerdy teenage fantasy of “finally making a Superman movie.” It isn’t the beginning of something grand it looks like another one-off, forgettable CBM since 2019 that just happens to feature Superman. And this was supposed to be the biggest cinematic event of the year.

I’m close to my yearly rewatch of Infinity War (2018) and Endgame (2019), and I fear those two films have firmly closed the door on this genre. Even in Endgame, the cracks had started to show. CBMs are never reaching those heights again, not for a very long time. All we can hope for are the occasional huffs and puffs, praying one sticks and makes it worth your while which I thought this would be. Such a shame.

Ultimately, this is a close to nothing movie. It achieves nothing, builds towards nothing, and is an unmemorable, jarring mess.

That's because Tom Cruise is one of the only few cinema purists left, but people simply do not care anymore, just release your shii on VOD and keep it moving, it's not like there is any theatre left still playing the movie, and with the movie been so expensive to make, it is nowhere near turning a profit, dangerously close to been a BO bomb, so he might as well release it on VOD.

I don't know how profitable Premium VOD actually is.

But it must be mouthwatering if Hollywood studios are willing to drop their movies in there after barely two months in cinemas.

Movie breaks even or crash and burn, next thing na VOD
Movies these days, peak 1 month into their theatrical run, so it makes sense to just dump them on VOD around that time, whilst still maintaining a few slots available to them at the Cinema.... Superman isn't even on FH's slate for the coming week even

Except it is a Christopher Nolan flick, any movie that doesn't do VOD now, at least 2 months max after a theatrical run, is simply asking for trouble.

Heldin AKA Late Shift (2025)

There is such beauty in foreign language films”

My second German movie treat of the week, and this time it was Swiss cinema doing the serving and oh boy, did they serve.

An intentional coincidence that Leonie Benesch is at the center of this too, as Floria, a dedicated nurse thrust into a late-night shift at a severely understaffed hospital, locked in a nerve-shredding, high-stakes battle with time.

The first scene sees her clock in and the last sees her clock out, but in between, we are trapped in fluorescent-lit gauntlet of emergencies, impossible choices, and fleeting breaths of humanity. There’s no backstory here, no cutaway to an easier time just the unrelenting now, where exhaustion is a constant companion and compassion the only fuel left.

By the time she steps out into the cold morning air, you feel the weight in her bones and as a WHO stats roll there to highlight how "endangered" the medical profession is right now, there is a lingering hum in your ears which isn't just hospital machinery, it’s the question the film plants deep: how long before the next Floria breaks?.

As the great Bong Joon Ho penned, If you could only soldier through subtitles, you will see so much beauty in foreign language films, and we are already, seeing every media with subtitles anyway...

Special... Special... Special Film 💐

Das Lehrerzimmer AKA The Teacher's Lounge (2023)

Unsettling… Unnerving… Unhinged.

Germany’s official submission for the 2024 Oscar Best Foreign Language Film category was on my plate this week and what a feast it was!

Carla Nowak, a new math teacher as idealistic as they come, sees her calm classroom descend into chaos after rumors of a theft ripple through the school. Frustrated by the lukewarm response from the authorities, she takes matters into her own hands and initiates a sting operation to unearth the truth. But her well-intentioned digging spirals out of control, uncovering a barrage of institutional racism, classism, and cancel culture.

Carla Nowak is played by Leonie Benesch and there’s a reason she’s my favorite German actress at the moment. Her performance is flawless, the anchor of the entire film. Her face carries a deft mix of dread, panic, and vulnerability throughout.

The film was deliberately shot in a 4:3 aspect ratio to create that sense of dread, claustrophobia, and boxed-in tension the narrative intended and it works backed by an eerie ticking score that makes for beautiful cinematography.

The German language is such an “aggressive” yet beautiful language, and I could listen to it for hours. This is right up there in the upper echelons of German cinema.

Beautiful… Beautiful… Film 💐

Probably because 28 years later was propped up to be one of the movies of this year, which it wasn't even remotely close...the whole thing looked like a parody, a far cry from what made "28 days later" worked. Even the so called "successful era" has it misses e.g. for every CA : The Winter Soldier there has always been Thor : The dark world ......Yes Marvel is having a difficult year but to call all post-Endgame flicks "Slobs" is simply Mouth-flapping and classic cherry-picking....

Wake me up when your Superman / Disguised Justice League movie hit $1B like y'all been chest-beating over the past months...
I could actually give no flying toss about what filths that you mentioned up there make at the BO, i simply do not care, my own rift is with critical ratings which directly affects the BO returns in some way, which my post was about, so yes, i stand by what i said, most of the MCU releases, post Endgame (2019) have been dirt bags critically..

Now, I don't even know how old you are, but i just assume you are an adult, so you might want to leave all these secondary school boyish traits behind, bothering your head about how much a film makes, when it has no direct impact on you, just so you can score some kinda point in a fandom war you made up in your head, makes zero sense to me...in fact it sucks the joy out of even seeing movies imo, sef.

You probably do not know my history here, i might as well, have praised more MCU movies here than DC, because MCU had a hugely successful period, it's just so unfortunate that they are synonymous with gutter quality media these days, i hope they find their way some day, but for now, i am well within my rights to criticise every garbage they put out, in this their down bad era, and if DC also release a slob, then i will call it out too.

Because unlike you, i am not tie down to any fandom that has warped any sense of logic, i see everything, criticise when it is necessary and praise when it's necessary too...you should try it something, maybe you'd enjoy movies more and every of your post wouldn't be about defending a franchise that clearly doesn't even know you exist in the first place..

EXHUMA (2024)

Wonder why I delayed watching this film since I downloaded it November last year. I'm really glad I got round to it now.

In a bid to rid a family of a generational curse afflicting a newborn baby, a group of Shamans and Geomancers scrambles to banish the ancestral vengeful spirit, only to meet a far more sinister and vile démön stuck in WWII reality.

What started out as a family ghost story, evolves into a full scale historical supernatural tale, entrenched in South Korean political history and folklore.

Another flex from South Asians on just how top tier and unbeatable their horror storytelling are. I don't think Hollywood can craft a well written, all encompassing and delicately entertaining as well as personal and relatable horror story as good as the South Koreans or Japanese.

This is just cultural dexterity at its peak and borrowing from local ancestry folk tales and then interpreting it to cinema.

Why is this different from the usual Hollywood fare? Because the Asians are neck deep in superstition and very much believe these things DO happen and are deeply rooted in their societal fabric. So telling a story about your tribe's beliefs; stories passed down generations and way of life is quite superior and personal as well as feels authentic because you actually believe what's happening as compared to Hollywood where ghost stories are treated as a hoax or someone's delusional weak mind dreaming up something UNREAL.

These Asians are born, shaped and moulded by it; while Hollywood filmmakers just adopted the artform. There's no surprise who's going to come out tops. This is a culture and belief system with ages of history as opposed to someone's dreamed up fiction.

One thing I also noticed, South Koreans and the Japanese treat sound/music score as a true art form and holds high importance in their storytelling or filmmaking as opposed to Chinese films who treat the sound design as a secondary thought. It's so integral to the storytelling, it matches the tones and feels of individual scenes and sometimes you begin to wonder "why's this flick this good?" — and then it hits you— it's the music score that elevates and complements the film every part of the way.

It's a gritty tale, so gripping and ruthless you feel chills at some point in the story. The build up to the story is so well done and articulate you begin to wonder what frame of mind the writer was in while adapting this tale. It feels too personal to just be a "movie".
It is very relatable in the sense that this shares some superstitious beliefs as Africans and Nigerians. So this feels more authentic.

Choi Min Sik is one incredible actor (Oldboy, Lady Vengeance) and man has been creeping up my Asian fare lately. Dude appears and just steals scenes. Kudos to the female lead who gave in a worthy performance next to an elite veteran actor. She held her own just fine and was the heart of the film.

This isn't a film trying to burst your heart out with a competition for cramming in the most amount of jumpscares. This is the real deal. Creeping you out slowly as you weave through the story and start getting the full picture.
It's a cinematic masterpiece and one of the South Korean films I really did enjoy, and what makes it a plus for me is that it's as recent as 2024 as opposed to the masterpieces of old where they are usually a decade old or older. So, there's hope of seeing more of this supernatural splendor.

It reminds me of Na Hong-Jin's The Wailing with the incredible detail, slow burn, and the historical supernatural and racial lines between the Japanese and the Koreans.

It doesn't compare to how exquisite The Wailing was, but this is a worthy modern successor to such GOAThood. I deeply recommend, especially if you're a connoisseur of Asian cinema.

I rate this an easy.....8.9/10
I saw it last back to back with Oddity (2024), and i was in horror high for some days afterwards, just in awe, how beautifully done both flicks were... easily one of my best films from last year.

South Korean Cinema dey feed me steady whenever i call, make i no lie....They have come a long way from those "Boys over Flowers" (2009) days, as when i think of any media from there back then, i think of sappy, sugary rom coms, but they have evolved so spectacularly, horror? Political drama, Action? them full ground.

On becoming a guniea fowl

Film made in Zambia

African films are getting interesting from senegal to Burkina faso

More of spirituality, tradition, mental health,

Im in heart with the way the women tye wrappers, we need more women wearing wrapper indoors
If A24 was scrappling to get the distribution rights of an African film, let alone a film out of Zambian cinema of all places, then you would know it's special ✨.

"On becoming a fking Guinea fowl" is as bizarre and bold as it's title in the best way possible.

It had me diving into Zambian cinema at the time, to see if they could feed me some more...still waiting on my sources to return with the titles i ordered.

Special, Special...Film ✨

I’m begging you guys, making me the 2nd person, pls stay away from this movie and save your 900mb for something else

My rating is for the kid only, the movie is a beautiful 0/10

Boss man the thing wey off me completely is the pregnant infected woman who gave birth to a perfectly healthy baby girl with no issues and the zombie woman giving birth as normal human beings with pain…………As how na, zombies get feelings?

How did the baby survive inside her without food for months?
Peak fooling maannn. Nothing made sense..they were trying to give emote to zombies, and what was the essence of that first scene? A huge mess of film. They might as well be using AI to write scripts now abeg 😩.

28 years later 3/10
You are so generous my good sir, this is was a special...special 1.5/10.

It's like the filmmaker took an udemy free course on sound design and film editing and just impulsively decided to make this, because tbf, that was the only good thing, this filth of film had going for it, even i got tired of it at one point, especially, the kill shot of the zombies, when the frame freezes, and unfreezes, looked like a first person shooter video game and a bad parody.

The script was so unbelievably bad, like zero redeeming qualities. It actually starts good, holds enough tension and solid premise at the beginning, boy i thought, these Mfs where taking me somewhere good, after those first 15 minutes, then the story just went flat, zero pulse, dead!.

Like a 12 year old boy with zero zombie killing skills wants to save his mother from his father, left a zombie proof protected enclave, and just went into the wilderness filled with Zombies with zero plans? Like who the hell wrote this trash?? 😩.

They slapped Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Jodie Comer on the face of this, and neither really had a anything to do with this movie tbh, the former was on screen for like 5 minutes out of a runtime of almost 2hrs? Naaahh, this film is the bottom of the bottom barrel...Good fking grief!...and Critical Drinker was calling this filth, one of the best movies of the year in his review!!😩.

Mannn, i can't even catch a break, i went from seeing "To kill a Monkey" to this dirtbag, Home or away, dem dey carry me handicap, when does it actually end?? 😭

Anyways, if you have never taking any of my recommendations seriously, please take this one... stay away from this travesty for your sanity, and for the safety of your precious precious data, in this Tinubu economy...Èdàkun 🙏🏿

It's very obvious AF.
I saw the trailer, and oh mann, beyond the obvious stunning visuals, and i didn't know what else i was supposed to be looking at😩...

I guess James Cameron has earned the right to be creatively stagnant at this twilight stage of his career, and the only thing he seemingly cares about is toppling Steven Spielberg, as the highest grossing film maker of all time, and he is just 2bn greens shy. That's probably why he is still insisting on this film.

Maybe show of the Year for Naija abi Africa standard and honestly the person might not be wrong lol 😄

I feel people related to it based of the struggle from the lead character and it played to our emotions and it was the exact same tactics T.perry used on that yeye movie (can't remember the title)
At the risk of sounding condescending, of course Nigerians are always gonna relate to it because that's the kind of Filmmaking they are used to, they don't care for technicalities or the depth of the script... just razz and crass which the show had in abundance.

All the reviews that i have seen that has critic the substance of the script and how shallow it is, have been met with the "Bad belle" tag by majority of Nigerians who feel this show is the best thing since slice bread and it's perfect, which on the strong contrary, it is very very far from. There is no way our movie industry move forward like this.
